In this episode, I explore Norman Rush's Mating, focusing on the chapter “Guilty Repose” and the section “Weep for Me.” Through the narrator's encounter with the waterfall, I unpack themes of noise, solitude, mediocrity, and companionship — connecting her revelations to my own experiences with silence, striving, and the human need for connection.Discussion Highlights:How “the roar penetrates you” mirrors our craving for sensory overwhelm — music, crowds, even chaos — to quiet the mind's constant chatter. The painful beauty of solitude eroding, and what it means to reconnect with ourselves after long avoidance. The “Weep for Me” moment as an honest confrontation with buried sadness, surfacing only when the world finally goes quiet. The narrator's fear of mediocrity and how society equates “average” with “unacceptable,” fueling endless striving. The final revelation — “If you had a companion you would stay where you are” — as a call to seek steadiness, humility, and shared presence over transcendence.

When host Jenny Dempsey got laid off back in 2022, she had no clue what I was doing. She was crying on her couch, trying to figure out who she even was without my job. No one hands you a guide for that kind of loss. It honestly felt like the ground fell out from under her.And then along comes Steve Jaffe. Turns out, he literally wrote the book I wish I had back then: The Layoff Journey: From Dismissal to Discovery.Steve's been through four layoffs (yes, four!) and instead of letting it crush him, he mapped out the stages of grief that come with job loss. Reading his book brought up so many of my own memories, everything from the shock and shame to that messy process of rebuilding your identity. It made me cry, it gave me hope, and it reminded me I'm not alone. In this conversation with Steve, we talk about:Why losing a job takes you through the grieving process. The awkward shame we carry after a layoff, and how to drop it.Why slowing down to process before jumping into the job hunt can change everythingThe “baggage” you might unknowingly carry into your next role. And what you need to hear if you just got laid off yesterday. This one hit so close to home for me, and if you've ever been laid off, or even just wondered who you are without your job, I think it'll resonate with you too.Connect with SteveGrab Steve's book The Layoff Journey on Amazon: The Layoff JourneyLearn more at: thestevejaffe.comFollow Steve on Instagram: @stevejaffethelayoffjourneyConnect with Steve on LinkedIn: Steve Jaffe on LinkedIn Thanks for tuning in to The Career Flipper! If this episode made you think, laugh, or feel a little braver about your own flip, do me a favor:

Losing a job isn't just about missing a paycheck — it can unravel your sense of identity, safety, and purpose. For many women, especially those navigating life on their own, job loss brings a cascade of emotional and practical challenges. But within that uncertainty also lies an opportunity for reinvention, reflection, and storytelling. This episode explores what it means to experience—and rise from—such a pivotal life shift. In this episode, I sit down with writer and educator Desiree Groft, author of the debut novel Girl Unemployed. While fictional in format, Desiree's book is deeply inspired by her real-life experience of unemployment during the Great Recession — and the resilience it took to rebuild from the ground up. Listen in as Desiree and I talk about: Why she chose to write her story through the lens of fiction instead of memoir How living in a historical NYC women's hotel became a character in the book The emotional and mental toll of unemployment, especially as a single woman The concept of “holding both grief and hope” during difficult transitions How the book's cover design became a metaphor for rewriting life's rough drafts The importance of finding community — not just for children, but for adults too Why traditional publishing didn't define her journey as an author Desiree's story is one of grit, reinvention, and honoring the messy in-between seasons of life. If you've ever faced a detour in your career, identity, or purpose — this conversation will resonate deeply. Be sure to listen to the full episode, then grab your copy of Girl Unemployed and follow Desiree's work. You'll find the links in the show notes — and don't forget to share this episode with a friend who needs to hear it. And if this conversation sparks something in you, consider sharing your own story — because your experiences have the power to connect, heal, and inspire others too. As president of the medical staff at an eight-hospital system, Dr. Patton seemed to have reached the pinnacle of physician leadership when a false accusation turned his world upside down. In this classic episode from 2019, Dr. Patton describes how he lost his medical license, job, and reputation overnight due to an unfounded criminal allegation. After nearly two years of legal battles and eventual exoneration, he chose not to return to clinical practice but instead channeled his experience into helping other physicians navigate similar crises. Dr. Patton discusses the harsh realities of administrative law for physicians, where guilt is presumed until innocence is proven, and how proper support systems are crucial for survival. His story demonstrates how devastating career setbacks can become opportunities for reinvention and meaningful work, helping others through their darkest professional moments. Dr. William Forstchen discusses the adaptation of his book "One Second After" into a movie. The film, produced by MPI Films and directed by Scott Rogers, is set to start filming in Bulgaria in September, with a release expected in late spring or early summer next year. The movie will focus on the devastating impact of an EMP attack, a topic Forstchen has long advocated for. He emphasizes the importance of realistic portrayals and the need for infrastructure protection. Forstchen also touches on broader themes of societal preparedness, the impact of technology on jobs, and the geopolitical landscape, particularly the potential threats from China and the importance of re-industrializing America.0:00:00 - Intro0:00:20 - "One Second After" the Movie 0:08:55 - Power Outage Experience 0:12:20 - Differences with 9/11 & an EMP 0:14:25 - Awareness of the EMP Issue 0:17:25 - Reports on EMP and Response 0:19:11 - Logistics of EMP & Effect 0:24:00 - Teaching Basic Survival Skills 0:29:35 - Artificial Intelligence, Job Loss & History 0:32:14 - Fall of Roman Empire and United States 0:34:51 - Farm Land, Water, China & Infrastructure 0:42:50 - Chip Production & Sending a Message 0:45:22 - United States Current Day and History 0:50:53 - Immigration Laws and History 0:55:05 - Schools, Security & Prevention 0:59:25 - Future Plans with the Movie & Sequel 1:01:58 - Outro Dr. William Fortschen books on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B000APZ9N8Chuck Shute link tree:https://linktr.ee/chuck_shuteSupport the showThanks for Listening & Shute for the Moon!
Ww're pulling back the curtain on one of the most powerful — and least understood — forces shaping our economy: private equity. My guest is Megan Greenwell, a veteran journalist and former editor-in-chief of Deadspin, whose new book, Bad Company: Private Equity and the Death of the American Dream, is both a searing exposé and a deeply human investigation. Through vivid storytelling and meticulous reporting, Megan shows how private equity firms, often operating in the shadows — have quietly reshaped entire industries: health care, housing, local news, retail, daycare, even emergency services. At the heart of Bad Company are four Americans — Liz, Roger, Natalia, and Loren — whose lives were upended by private equity–backed takeovers of the institutions they depended on. Their stories reveal how a business model designed to extract maximum profits for investors has left devastation in its wake for working families and entire communities. This is a conversation about capitalism, inequality, and the hollowing out of the American Dream. But it's also about resilience, and the people fighting back.

This guided meditation aims to create space for possibility amidst challenging life situations. While we all encounter challenging situations, I created this meditation for my 12,000 Google fomer colleagues who were laid off a few years ago and the countless others affected by layoffs in the tech sector since then. These layoffs serve as a wake-up call for all of us—a reminder of the significance of intentionality in life and building financial resilience to overcome difficult times.Overview of the PracticeWe begin by finding a comfortable and alert position and taking three deep breaths to focus on the sensation of our breath in our bodies. We practice mindfulness, observing our thoughts with kindness and curiosity.Next, we expand our perspective and recall a challenging situation we are facing—a layoff, a divorce, the loss of a family member or pet. With mindfulness, we observe this situation with a kind and curious awareness. Then, we shift our focus to exploring the possibility of even the smallest positive outcomes in this challenging situation.I sincerely hope this meditation proves helpful as you process your challenges and embrace the opportunities life presents to you.Wishing you all the best on your journey.AdamPS: Introducing the…

In today's episode, we dive into the latest predictions around AI-driven job displacement, highlighted by Ford CEO Jim Farley's blunt warning that AI could eliminate half of all white-collar jobs in the U.S. Farley's remarks at the Aspen Ideas Festival, echoed in a pointed Wall Street Journal article, underscore an emerging trend: executives outside Silicon Valley are increasingly acknowledging AI's profound workforce implications. We explore why Farley calls for urgent societal plans to support displaced workers, and what his comments signal for the broader conversation on AI and the future of work.Get Ad Free AI Daily Brief: https://patreon.com/AIDailyBriefBrought to you by:KPMG – Go to https://kpmg.com/ai to learn more about how KPMG can help you drive value with our AI solutions.Blitzy.com - Go to https://blitzy.com/ to build enterprise software in days, not months AGNTCY - The AGNTCY is an open-source collective dedicated to building the Internet of Agents, enabling AI agents to communicate and collaborate seamlessly across frameworks. Tech leaders promise that AI automation will usher in an age of unprecedented abundance: cheap goods, universal high income, and freedom from the drudgery of work. But even if AI delivers material prosperity, will that prosperity be shared? And what happens to human dignity if our labor and contributions become obsolete?Political philosopher Michael Sandel joins Tristan Harris to explore why the promise of AI-driven abundance could deepen inequalities and leave our society hollow. Drawing from his landmark work on justice and merit, Sandel argues that this isn't just about economics — it's about what it means to be human when our work role in society vanishes, and whether democracy can survive if productivity becomes our only goal. We've seen this story before with globalization: promises of shared prosperity that instead hollowed out the industrial heart of communities, economic inequalities, and left holes in the social fabric. Can we learn from the past, and steer the AI revolution in a more humane direction?Your Undivided Attention is produced by the Center for Humane Technology. Follow us on X: @HumaneTech_.
