[25:16 - 30:18] About Justin's own family support system, and how a husband and wife with busy schedule can make their marriage and family life run smoothly and stress free. Here’s what Justin shared with us during today’s conversation: Favourite European City: Reykjavik, Iceland. He currently lives in Central New Jersey. Best thing to happen in the past 24 hours: Enjoying a sunny day playing with a soccer ball, football and baseball with his 3 year old son - a proud Dad moment! A mistake Justin would like you to learn from so you don't have to pay full price for it: He got himself the wrong properly manager, and even though the person was vetted etc they didn't have the experience in managing the same larger sized properties in the same locations, which turned out to be of great importance, as the property manager didn't have the relevant experience and for that reason he failed. Show Notes In this episode you'll learn… How important it is to assess the diversity (or lack thereof) in your personal life About Justin's six month challenge to explore a perspective that's different than your own The importance of intention and approach when exploring conversations around diversity and difference To approach conversations around diversity and difference with vulnerability and humility The importance of taking an inventory: Where are you / we now Where you want to be What are the barriers to getting there How can those barriers be removed To ask questions of those who are underrepresented and just listen To focus on a just a few areas for improvement (i.e. don't try to address too many things at once) The role that relationship plays in approach the issues of diversity and inclusion That sustainable change often requires external pressure The important role that peer-to-peer input and feedback in driving change especially around diversity and inclusion To avoid rushing to action without enough listening and understanding The importance of listening first and then taking purposeful action for change (not just reactionary statements) That one of the biggest obstacles to change is failing to listen and therefore failing to understand the experience of others The metaphor of left-handedness when applied to other people of difference What it means to be an ally by understanding the different experiences of others The one thing leaders need to know in order to be a part of the change when it comes to racism (the moving walkway analogy) What it means to be a conscious racist on the moving walkway What it means to be conscious non-racist on the moving walkway What it means to be an unconscious non-racist on the moving walking What it means to be an anti-racist on the moving walkway Resources: Justin Jones-Fosu, 704.750.5574, justin@workmeaningful.com Work. Today’s episode was produced and recorded live in Boston at the RIMS 2019 Annual Conference — and it’s going to be a fun one! It’s centered around one of the conference’s cool new features: the Start-Up Stadium and RIMS’ first-ever Insuretech Competition called, “Killer Appeal with an Added Byte.” This was a Shark Tank-style pitch contest where small business CEOs showcased their technology-enabled solutions and were judged by a panel of expert risk managers. It provided an opportunity for six up-and-coming Insurtech start-ups focused on risk-based solutions to pitch their companies to five expert risk managers. In this episode, Justin Smulison shines a light on two key people involved in this competition: host, Audrey Rampinelli, the CEO and co-founder of OnRamp Risk LLC; and Alex Schwarzkopf, the CEO of Pillar Technologies and the winner of the RIMS Insurtech Competition! With Audrey, Justin discussed the competition, the Insurtech market and how it continues to impact the risk management industry. And in his conversation with Alex, they discuss his preparations leading up to the competition, his background in the industry, and where he sees his industry heading in the next 5-10 years.
