How to make sure you have the best role models for an inclusive culture with Teagan Robinson Today's episode with have the fab Teagan Robinson who has been Anchor's Diversity and Inclusion Manager since 2021 and has been with the housing association for nearly 6 years. She has led Anchor's inclusion agenda that supports colleagues with their career goals and personal development whilst being their authentic selves and supports residents to live lives that allow them to thrive in later life. Her ethos is that everyone's voice should be heard and that cognitive diversity allows organisations to provide great places to work and provides the best outcomes for customers. In our conversation today we discussed the importance of role models and if you can see it then you can become it - a crucial role that visible leadership has to play. As well as allies and how its not only men that need to be better allies but we also need to see more women supporting more women because the impact can be huge especially if there is judgement and criticism around different ambitions, and recognising that we don't always look at this through an intersectional lens. Teagan explains the importance of positive action to address diversity gaps and shares great tips on how companies can do things differently. We also look at the part that clear career pathways can play in moving the needle on gender parity too and ensuring that everyone is granted the actual time and space to be involved in and make the most of career development opportunities. Let us know your thoughts after tuning in? -------------------- We have recently finished the RiSE for Visible Leadership April cohort coaching programme which had ambitious women from different Housing Associations and they have been taking actions they never dreamed they would in terms of visibility and self promotion - it's a win win for both them and their organisation! The housing association collaborative RiSE programme for visible leadership has a proven success rate previously internally in housing associations and it helps support women to own their expertise, identify barriers for self promotion and increase their visibility so that they can develop their career progression within the company. The impact of the programme for housing associations include: Increased retention of top female talent Promotions of more women into senior roles Reduction in the gender pay gap Pro active employees ready to take on new opportunities Talented employees who feel confident to speak up and share opinions and ideas in meetings More female role models who showcase their own achievements and are not backing away from self promotion Committed and motivated staff who want to progress their careers at their company Increased business opportunities from women getting more involved in networking to promote their company and its values. Some HAs have found the programme so successful that they have us facilitate internal cohorts every year. Today, author and disability diversity expert Ruth Rathblott offers a fresh perspective on how we understand and approach diversity in the workplace. She and Steve discuss how DEI can benefit both your culture and your business, and they give practical tips for leaders looking to build a more inclusive environment. Key Takeaways: 1. Leaders need to go first in being vulnerable and trustworthy. 2. Hiding is universal and exhausting, and people fear judgement and rejection for keeping secrets. 3. Unhiding can increase staff retention and engagement. 4. Leaders who adopt unhiding can be more innovative and creative, and better connect with millennials and Gen Z employees. 5. Unhiding is the key to connection, and it will make leaders stronger and drive business results in today's pandemic of loneliness. Tune in to hear more about: 1. Diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on disability inclusion (0:00) 2. Hiding and sharing personal aspects of one's identity in the workplace, with a focus on disability and diversity (5:08) 3. Leadership vulnerability and creating a safe space for teams to thrive (10:26) 4. The benefits of “unhiding” in the workplace, leading to increased trust, retention, and innovation (14:41) 5. Uncovering hidden potential through self-awareness and connection (18:49) Standout Quotes: 1. It's funny, I was talking to a woman recently. And she said, I love this concept of hiding, I love the work that you're doing, Ruth, and as a leader, I will never unhide to my team. And I said, okay, why? And she said, because I don't trust them. And it got me into the space of thinking, Steve, that either she has the wrong team, or she's the wrong leader. Because if we can't trust our teams, why are we in this business? Because that's our job is to build teams that trust us, that work with us, that get us to our next level in terms of a company. And so how do we create those spaces? And it's by leaders going first, and being vulnerable. - Ruth Rathblott 2. “There is a privilege in being able to unhide. I recognize that. In terms of being able, whether you're in the securities industry or in a different industry, because there are still in 2024 reasons that people would be fearful, and for good reason be fearful, of sharing parts of themselves, for retaliation, et cetera. I think where I've seen the benefit and the other side is the retention increases. People feel better about the place that they work, because they don't feel like they have to hide that part of themselves. “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.”—Joseph Cambell (1904 – 1987)Every journey is a tapestry of experiences, and Urmi Hossain's story weaves a vibrant pattern of culture, identity and self-discovery that stretches across continents. Our conversation peels back the layers of Urmi's life, from her early years in Italy to her adventures in Canada, illuminating the bittersweet nature of frequent relocations. She recounts the challenges of being a Bengali Muslim in Catholic schools and the complexity of being a third culture kid caught between worlds. With each move, Urmi faced the daunting task of bidding farewell to friendships and adapting to new surroundings, yet she found a way to embrace the excitement of exploration and the richness of Canada's multicultural milieu.Digging deeper into the heart of immigration, Urmi reflects on her parents' brave leap from Bangladesh to Italy—perhaps influenced by Italy's permissive Martelli's law—a journey made not for work but for the promise of a better future. This chapter of Urmi's life paints an intriguing portrait of identity struggles, as she feels more anchored to her Italian and Bengali roots than to her Canadian citizenship. Urmi likens the move to Canada to Joseph Campbell's “cave you fear to enter,” which holds “the treasure you seek.” The analogy captures both the risks and the rewards of diving into the unknown, a country where even the language, Quebecois, created a formidable hurdle to acceptance. Her adventurous spirit is a testament to the power of taking chances and the profound impact such decisions have on shaping one's life narrative. In the final stretch of our intimate dialogue, we traverse the landscape of Urmi's personal growth and the resilience she has honed over the years. Becoming a Toastmaster has helped her in pursuing her ultimate quest for giving a coveted TED Talk. She is a dedicated mentor to other women and girls through her volunteer work in Canada, and Urmi shares how her commitment to fitness, particularly boxing, has fortified her mental and physical strength. As we wrap up, we contemplate the paradoxical relationship between joy and sadness and the adaptability that is carved from life's hurdles. Urmi's journey from Palermo to Montreal exemplifies the transformative process that many of us navigate, reminding us that the essence of our shared human experience is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. Join us for this heartfelt exploration that is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever sought their place in the world.Highlight Timestamps(03:08 - 04:27) Exploration and Self-Discovery Through Moving(10:17 - 12:06) Immigration Experiences of Bangladeshi Family(14:54 - 15:52) Questioning Ethnicity and Accents(21:08 - 22:18) Journey of Personal Transformation(29:50 - 30:55) Exploring Career Paths and Personal Accomplishments(32:23 - 33:06) The Importance of Taking RisksPlaces mentioned in this episode:PalermoBangladeshItalyU.K. MontrealCanadaAbout Urmi HossainUrmi Hossain is Bengali by blood and Italian by birth. Diversity and inclusion (D&I) are essential to sustainable business cultures, nowhere more so than in the MedTech industry, where a product's success can depend on its acceptance within a variety of communities. In Episode #30, KeyTech's Andy Rogers and Senior Mechanical Engineer Danica Mackesey sat down with Sarah Hassaine, ResMed's Head of Global Inclusion and Diversity, about fostering environments where multiple voices get heard.Need to knowChanging lives globally —ResMed is a global manufacturer of CPAP systems for at-home sleep apnea treatment and ventilator solutions for out-of-hospital care settings.Diversity as a strategy — Hassaine's team coordinates ResMed's efforts to bring diversity and inclusivity to the employee experience, business practices, and product development.Giving ResMed communities a voice — ResMed employees participate in Employee Resource Groups where women, veterans, neurodiverse, and other communities contribute their perspectives to the company's D&I strategies. The nitty-grittyA large part of Hassaine's role is fostering D&I within ResMed — quite a challenge, considering the company has over ten thousand team members supporting customers in over 140 countries! At the same time, the core challenges will be familiar to small companies and startups.“The first part is for people to understand themselves,” she explains. “People have their own intrinsic opinions, thoughts, biases…. Building in that ability to understand and find value in people's differences is the hardest part.”Diversity and inclusivity also need to be part of the product development cycle. “Some communities are not comfortable talking about sleep,” Hassaine says. “It is a very personal experience. We have seen that struggle with getting some communities to even get sleep-tested.”People from disparate communities — Women, people of color, veterans, older people — have differing attitudes towards doctors, the healthcare system, and personal health in general. These differences, however, are not well understood.“Our medical affairs team is doing more research on the social determinants of health and access to health care. We're making sure that everyone gets access to a sleep test if needed.”Data that made the differenceResMed's D&I team collects qualitative and quantitative data to understand the state of diversity and inclusion within the company. In addition to surfacing perspectives through Employee Resource Groups, her team generates quantitative insights from hiring, promotion, and attrition data as well as from employee surveys.“It does take time, especially in the inclusion space, to address data and see improvement,” Hassaine says. “I'm finally now having a story to tell three years later.”Hassaine and Danica addressed how diversity data plays is crucial in medical device development. Danica brought up the “importance of understanding who's going to use the device because there's some really potentially dangerous impacts.”“We're really taking that into consideration,” Hassaine agreed. The success of sleep apnea treatments often depends on the fit of a CPAC system's mask. A key question Hassaine brought to ResMed's product teams: “Are we making sure we have enough diversity to test our products so that we're… accommodating all face types or all heights or all body types?”
Shownotes: I talk a lot about women, mothers/carers, mid-career professionals, and leadership. Of course, these are intersecting identities that coalesce at different points in life to create additional barriers for working women. We are not even talking about race, disability, ethnicity, ageism etc. And I talk about these issues because I was squeezed out of what I thought should have been a fulfilling career. What happened to me, does not have to happen to others, and so the aspiration is to get women to understand where the barriers may lie and be more intentional about their journey. For my part, would it have helped if there were more women in leadership at the time, women for whom their careers were as important as their personal lives? I definitely think so.I wish I had known a lot of the women, I know now - at that time. Amongst those who have been an inspiration for me in my second innings as the founder of a purpose led consultancy are Nicky Regazzoni and Georgina Blizzard

Are you looking for ways to build an inclusive culture in your nonprofit? Organizational culture can be a challenge for many nonprofit leaders. One of the main reasons is that every organization has blind spots. It can be difficult to see what your organization is missing, especially when you're on the inside all day every day. In this episode, I sit down with Yanira Castro to chat about how she uses strategies to help nonprofits build an inclusive culture. She discusses how she uses respectful storytelling and ways to use language that is inclusive and nonexclusionary. Yanira also dives into how to use core values to set the tone and transform your culture. She also gives some great examples of what not to do when you're building a culture of inclusivity. About Yanira: Yanira M. Castro (she/her/ella) is a speaker and communications professional with more than 20 years of experience in telling inspiring stories to audiences ranging from national television shows to leading digital channels. Yanira founded Humanity Communications Collective in 2017 to inspire people with stories of joy and justice. The team, made up of amazingly talented women and people of color, is highly focused on digital engagement and storytelling, by reminding people to embrace technology, business, and life in a way that focuses on people's humanity. Humanity Communications Collective has also shared important and groundbreaking client stories on CBS This Morning, ABC News, 60 Minutes, Essence, Now This!, O, The Oprah Magazine, and many others. Episode Summary: In this episode, you'll learn strategies for building an inclusive and understanding organizational culture for your nonprofit, including: Using respectful storytelling (8:40) Ensuring your language is inclusive and nonexclusionary (11:30) Filling in the gaps between the nonprofit team and the community they're serving (13:50) Transforming the culture of your organization (17:10) Assessing your organization's blind spots (19:20) Using core values to set the tone for your culture (23:50) Finding job candidates that fit your culture (27:50) Intentionally embodying core values every day (30:05) What not to do when creating an inclusive and understanding culture (33:15) Teasers: “There's more power in telling a story that is centered in somebody's lived experience in a way that showcases them as a hero of their own narrative and not the nonprofit being the hero.” “Feedback can be tough, but we need to hear the tough things in order for us to really change, especially if we're looking at changing people's hearts and minds.” “Values that we hold really build our culture in a way that people really enjoy.” Resources: Check out the Humanity Communications Collective website: https://humanitycom.com/donate/ Connect with Yanira on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yanira-castro/ Follow the Humanity Communications Collective on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/humanity-communications-collective/ FREE Finance Routine Checklist: https://100degreesconsulting.com/routine Keep up to date with the podcast: @100degreesconsulting Follow Stephanie on Instagram: @stephanie.skry/ Connect with Stephanie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephanieskryzowski/ Visit the podcast page: https://100degreesconsulting.com/inclusive-culture Want more of the podcast? On this episode of This Is Woman's Work we're going to talk about how to be an ally. And since about 90% of our listeners are women, I'm talking mostly about WOMEN being allies women. More specifically, how we can be allies to Black women. Because, in my opinion, there isn't a group of women who have the right to demand it more. And I'm so tired of constantly letting them down. I've asked Aisha Suleiman to join me for this necessary conversation, as she's an award-winning diversity and inclusion leader, entrepreneur, and keynote speaker. Her company, The Inclusive Culture, helps organizations build a sense of community by empowering their employee resource groups and encouraging allyship in the workplace. Recognized as an EMpower 100 Ethnic Minority Future Leaders (2020), Aisha has worked with renowned global brands like Amazon and IPG Mediabrands. In 2022, Aisha launched True White Allies – a ground-breaking film project that shares the stories of historical White anti-racists from as early as the 1700s to inspire increased allyship and action. I have a strong belief that we can't make any real, lasting progress as women, if ALL women aren't considered, included, and advocated for. Let's be in action, big and small, public and private, proactively and reactively… in action, together. Being an ally… now THAT is woman's work.
