“Our goal is to have a product that is so close to fresh produce as you can get it, but also making it shelf stable” Natalie Mariani Kling (04:48 - 04:55)   Attached to the Mariani name, Natalie Mariani Kling was already in the thick of growing produce and providing nutritious food to consumers. But that mindset elevated when she became a mother. In-depth research about eating habits from around the world led Natalie to focus on plant-based nutrients and whole foods in her own lifestyle. Now, Natalie and Mariani Dried Fruits are on a mission to elevate how we view nutrition and partnering with others to make it more accessible.    Mariani Dried Fruits goes back to the 1900's when Natalie's great grandfather, Paul, immigrated to the States from Croatia. Landing in NYC, the love of his life, Victoria, was across the country in California. Working in a coconut factory for $1 a day, he earned enough money to move to California and began working on Victoria's family farm in San Jose - now Silicon Valley. Soon after, he married Victoria and made enough money to put a down payment on his own orchard, and Mariani Dried Fruits was born. Known for his dedication to not only his family, but all the families in their community, Paul brought something special to the Mariani name.   As the business grew, Paul passed the farm along to his children, who then expanded it worldwide by buying land in Australia to grow produce year ‘round. With Paul's great grandson becoming the CEO in the 70's, Mariani Fruits continued to focus on quality, innovation, and family first. Now it's the fourth generation's turn as George Jr., Natalie's cousin, is at the helm as President. Even with many Mariani names involved, everyone has different roles to play in the innovation and “family first” mantra of the company. When it was their turn to run the company, everyone came together and discussed who they are as a company, as a family, and how they want to grow.    It simply came down to the ideals of living healthy with a family focus. They had a product they were able to take and deliver real nutrients to consumers just like them. The next step was figuring out how to elevate that into the next century.   “As a fourth generation, we sat down and realized that things are shifting and the success or failure of the company was going to be on our watch.” Natalie Mariani Kling (06:46 - 06:54)   After re-establishing their dedication to the value of health and family, Mariani Fruits began planning on how to convey that to consumers, as all changes start at home. They began working on programs to make healthy eating easier and more accessible for their community members, something the company continues to focus on. One of these adaptations is arranging how they can be a resource for busy people and families. That started with making their website a platform for things like healthier lunch boxes for kids and quick and easy recipes.   The innovation mindset didn't just start when the fourth generation took over. When Paul started the farm he immediately began working on better technology for drying fruit like adding moisture back to make a more enjoyable eating experience. These ideals continue to this day.    “We understand. We are those busy parents and those families that are trying to do it a little bit better all the time.” Natalie Mariani Kling (21:22 - 21:29)   Within months of these collaborative discussions, Natalie met with a company called Treasure 8. After hearing of their commitment to improving the food chain and especially supporting mothers and babies, she knew the combination of their technology and Mariani's ability to commercialize it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to impact the world together.    The two companies built this partnership by coming up with technology to preserve the cellular integrity of the food, thus locking in nutrients, flavor, texture and color so there would be no need for preservatives or artificial sweeteners. This took Mariani Dried Fruits to the next level when it comes to shelf stability. With that, Mariani dried fruits can not only be found in the dried fruits section in grocery stores, but in the produce section as well. Natalie points out this point was vital for customers to see them in a “fresh” area as 90% of shoppers at least pass through the produce section.   Treasure 8 can also take Mariani's food waste like prune or mango pits and make them into a nutrient dense ingredient that can be applied to other foods. The partnership between the two was a no-brainer between providing nutritious food to consumers, while also looking for ways to reduce waste and be more environment-friendly.    With partnerships like these, Mariani Dried Fruit can continue their mission statement of innovation while remaining relatable and convenient for families across the globe.   How to get involved Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! On today's episode, Jason kicks things off by sharing his thoughts on the Milwaukee Bucks' victory over the Phoenix Suns in Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Khris Middleton had 40 for the Bucks and Devin Booker dropped 42 for the Suns, but the big story to come out of the game was the underwhelming play of the Point God Chris Paul. Paul had five more turnovers in Game 4 – including a critical one in the final minutes – and had arguably his worst game of the playoffs. In fact, CP3's play has gotten worse pretty much every game of these NBA Finals. With Paul slowing down and Giannis Antetokounmpo looking like the most dominant player in the series, it feels like the Bucks are in full control. Later, FOX Sports MLB analyst Ben Verlander swings by to discuss what it was like meeting his sports hero Shohei Ohtani at the MLB All-Star Game, his own experience as a two-way player in college, why he's only slightly optimistic that we'll see more two-way players moving forward, how Twitch helped him prepare for a career in sports media, and much more! Who knew that having a trusted relationship would save a life. As a peacekeeper, Paul Nadeau made sure that when training others, having a relationship was one of the first things he did to earn trust. Without Paul knowing, one of those he trained was actually an undercover terrorist who coordinated a raid where Paul was, with the intention of "taking no prisoners". With Paul surrounded and being beaten by other terrorists, it was clear to him that he was going to die. But what saved him was the trusted relationship he developed with the terrorist that had him live. (2Cor.6:1-10;   Ps.98:1-4;   Mt.5:38-42)   “When a person strikes you on the right cheek, turn and offer him the other.”   “Now is the acceptable time!  Now is the day of salvation!”  Alleluia!  And how do we know the salvation of the Lord except by the cross.  This is our joy.  These “difficulties, distresses, beatings, imprisonments, and riots”; the “hard work, sleepless nights, and fastings” – these crosses bring us immeasurable joy, for through them we share in the suffering of Christ and so also in His resurrection glory.  Thus the Lord can encourage us not to seek to avoid such suffering; thus He instructs us to be prepared to suffer over and above that which comes to us – for He knows that as we give of ourselves in this ready way, as we lay down our lives without hesitation, we shall find ourselves in the hand of God, we shall come quickly to join Him in heaven.  With Paul, we must “present ourselves as ministers of God, acting with patient endurance amid trials,” and His salvation will be made known in us.  And we will rejoice with Paul in all our sorrows.  And we will be able to exclaim with him, “We seem to have nothing, yet everything is ours!”  For the fullness of Christ will reside with us. Give.  Give, and do not count the cost.  How hard it is for us to freely give of our possessions, much less of our very lives.  Are we ready to “give to the man who begs” from us?  Are we prepared to care for others' needs?  Or do we hold tightly to our possessions, calling them our own?  And what of the possession of our pride and the protection of ourselves from injury?  What of our judgment of others?  Are we ready to give these up so completely?  Can we turn the other cheek to those who do us wrong, offering the pain to God and finding great comfort there, or do we need to strike back against the offending party, exacting the retribution due us according to the law?  Do we indeed live by the law, or have we transcended the law: do we now live by the Law of love?  Are we a new creation in Christ? It is not easy to lay down our lives in such a way as Christ calls us.  The world ever mocks the absurdity of this sacrifice.  But we who are in Jesus should know the absolute truth of Paul's words and Jesus' instruction.  If we are to be Christians, we must know the joy and freedom that come from suffering all with Him who is our salvation.  He is all that matters.  If we have Him, we have all things.  Come to this truth, brothers and sisters; leave behind the fears wrought by attachment to the things of this world.  This world is of sin, anyway.  As we lose our possessions for Him, He gives us all the more.  As the body dies, the spirit comes to life.  What the devil would take from us, let us give him, for he cannot touch the life that is Christ: our souls are in the hand of God.  And, as with Job, all will be restored to us, and more, in the day of the Lord.  So, “wielding the weapons of righteousness with right hand and left,” let us learn always to turn the other cheek to our persecutors.   ******* O LORD, grant us the grace to endure all trials in patience and with love, that we may give witness to your salvation at work in us. YHWH, your salvation has come to us, and it comes in the form of a Cross; in the suffering and death of your Son we are set free to rejoice in you.  Though we seem to have nothing, though we be beaten and robbed, yet Jesus is with us, and with Him everything is ours.  O let us accept the salvation that He brings this day!  Let us be patient amid all trials and we will know your presence among us. Help us, dear LORD, to walk with your Son on the way of the Cross.  He is struck repeatedly; He is stripped and forced to carry the burden of our sin.  We beg you not to turn your back on us, though we have turned our backs on Him.  Help us to do what we are unable to do – to give witness to the truth and love of the Christ… to endure all as He has done. O to be disciples of Him who saves us!  O to know His holy innocence and unending life!  O to sing with joy to you, dear God, in the unbreakable Spirit of your Son.

In this conversation with Paul Desmarais III, we talk a lot about Disruption. In this episode, he shared many unique insights. Here are a few that stood out for me. What is Disruption? Naturally, this podcast has explored the word Disruption and what it means. Paul describes it as adding more people into the majority. He even said it was like growth. This idea that Disruption is about breaking things needs to change. The idea that we are going to dismantle entire industries is not helpful. It should be about creating value and pausing patterns that no longer work for us. Exploring Disruption is fruitful. Playing the long game. As a coach, I often work with my clients to help them raise the level of their gaze. Help them play a long-term game. Paul Desmarais III is part of one of the most successful families in Canadian business. One of the things he points out in this episode is that one of the benefits of being part of a family-owned group is taking a long-term view. For those of us who can play the long game, it can genuinely change our destiny. Families in BusinessPaul reminds us that they are not a family business. They are family in business, and that is an important nuance. As Paul notes, being in a family business ties you to a specific company, industry or business. When you are a family in the connection is to values and a particular philosophy. A family’s goal is to transfer the entrepreneurial and philosophical approach to the next generation so that each generation can reinvent themselves. When family businesses can avoid the shirtsleeve-to-shirtsleeve pattern, they can truly build something great. The specifics of the business matter less than the entrepreneurial spirit. Focus on what you can impact. Particularly this year, I have been coaching my clients to draw three columns: Complete Control, Partial Control, and No Control. What you need to do is move as many things as possible into the complete control box as possible. Paul told a story about dining with David Rockefeller. David told him at the dinner to only worry about what you can impact. To worry about the things you can have no impact on is a waste of time and energy. Instead, the goal is to focus only on what you can impact. Over time, you succeed at what you are doing. Concentrate on the things you can have no impact on can be harmful to the here and now. Focus on what can I do not to impact my current reality? The power of infrastructures of serviceOne of the conclusions I have come to is that it is tough to disrupt infrastructure businesses. For example, it is challenging to disrupt whoever owns all the fiberoptic cables of the internet. They own the infrastructure. As a strategy for Disruption, what if you take a page out of Pauls book. He describes how the entire world of financial services was going to change in the years ahead. He also notes that most companies are playing a zero-sum game. With a small amount of capital, you could create a delightful experience in today’s world and could change how consumers interact with financial services. So instead, what if you focused on an adjacent area and find profit pools there? Creating a flywheel. I have always thought about innovation as affecting the way we live. With Paul’s Flywheel notion, he suggests that by partnering with marketing defining companies, they can create prosperity in the communities in which they invest. For example, in Canada, they want to make many jobs and a lot of wealth. They are creating a flywheel so that those entrepreneurs can create wealth, philanthropy and employment. So in their goal to create five unicorns companies, they are making a flywheel of prosperity. What is your superpower? Paul described his superpower as networking. He tries to deploy his network for good. Recently Paul co-founded the Black Wealth Club to leverage his superpower. He asked himself, how do you build a network with a group of people with who you have had very little interaction? Then, how you leverage your network to help a new group of people access new things. In this approach, it is essential to note that he is defining wealth as more than money. Wealth is about intellectual capital, human capital and relationship capital. Your most valuable asset is your people. In thinking about his own companies, Paul is making sure that he attracts the best talent. He wants his teams to behave lives that are in balance. He commented that “your most valuable assets walk in and out of the door every day.” His jobs, as he sees it, is to build a platform that makes them their best. He believes that nurturing talent means investing in talent. Not investing in people puts you at a competitive disadvantage. We approach every conversation with a bias. The question of imposter syndrome or doubt has been popping up for me more and more. Here you have one of the wealthiest men in Canada admitting that he has Imposter Syndrome. Sometimes his internal talk, when he walks into the room, is that people are thinking, “here is someone who has never done anything.” “Here is a rich kid playing with a cute idea.” We all have imposter syndrome. Well, maybe not all of us but at least those of us who love our work. After you get into the room, you then need to overcome the hurdle of internal doubt. Are you good enough? Are you worthy? None of us is alone with these thoughts. Seek to understand the drivers of your people. By default, we judge people as generalizations and not as individuals. Each of us needs to work hard to dismantle these trends. These stigmas permeate society, and it is horrible that people are often judged by generalizations. Fear of failure often cripples people. Paul admitted that he has learned to check his fear of failure and try things that are out of his comfort zone in our conversation. For him, fear is nothing but a lack of preparation. He likes to say that all of his success in life has come through luck. He tries to be prepared and positioned for luck. He is working on not fearing looking stupid for having taken a risk. He is also trying to ignore what people are going to think if he makes a mistake. Paying attention to the adjacent profit pools. There are substantial adjacent profit pools that we often ignore. Instead of a focus on each other, focus on a world of abundance. A lot of conflicts are about mindsets of scarcity. We can rethink how we build things. How do you help bring opportunity? Change the world view. Go where others are not willing to go. If you would like to learn more about Paul Desmarais III. Visit his website: https://www.sagardholdings.com/

Both Jason and Frank were very wrong about the Boston Bruins, who have just one regulation loss so far this season. The two talked about why they thought the Bruins would take a step back and what's allowed them to not miss a beat despite losing some key players in the offseason. They also took a quick trip across Canada to touch on some hot topics in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Montreal before welcoming in their first-ever guest, Winnipeg Jets Head Coach Paul Maurice! With Paul, they talked about the Jets' addition of Pierre-Luc Dubois, coaching during the pandemic, and how the Jets organization uses and values analytics. Maurice also touched on his relationship with Jim Rutherford and played a game of 'Rapidfire' with Frank!

First Presb Church of Belzoni (PCA)

This is part two of Saul's conversion. He goes from breathing threats against the church, to using his breath to proclaim the king of the world.--The church benefits not only from the peace Paul's conversion brings, but also from his powerful preaching as he -proves- Jesus is the Christ from the Scriptures.--With Paul, brothers begin to dwell in unity- with this hinge-point in Acts, the church's quality and quantity begins to change.--We now have not only a church, but an Apostle for the Gentiles. Foreshadowing tells us we're about to see a great change in the Roman Empire.

It's the end of 1974 - a year of productivity, transformation, music and the definitive ending for The Beatles partnership. After four long years of litigation, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr (plus a parade of their respective attorneys) put pen to paper on the document that would once and for all conclude the greatest pop music enterprise the modern world had ever seen before or since. But this ending wouldn't be without the trademark drama and heartache that marred the former Beatles' lives since their split in 1970. On December 19th, 1974, George Harrison and his Dark Horse tour took the stage for the first of three engagements at New York City's famed Madison Square Garden - and John Lennon was scheduled to appear with George to perform as a special guest. With Paul in the audience, and George and John on the stage, the old friends planned to return together to an afterparty that would see the signing of the dissolution papers completed, and conclude the Beatles partnership on a happy note. This was not to be. For reasons known only to to the man himself, John Lennon hatched an excuse, bailed on the concert and refused to sign the papers. It wouldn't be for another 10 days, with some arm-twisting by McCartney, for John Lennon to finally sign the documents that would end the project he began so many years ago. A project that carried he and his friends from scruffy lower middle-class teddy boys to the most famous, most successful musicians on the planet - leaving a mark not only on history, but on the lives of the countless millions touched by their music. And with that, both 1974, and the Beatles, were finished. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It’s the end of summer in 1974 and big things are happening for John Lennon. After three long years of separation, John and his son Julian were at last reunited for a visit that would prove formative for their relationship moving forward. Though tensions remained with ex-wife Cynthia, the absence of Yoko Ono in John’s life allowed for some ice to be thawed between the former married couple, at least long enough for John to better get to know his son. As family ties grew, new professional relationships, such as that of Lennon’s friendship with Elton John, blossomed into fruitful collaborative projects. To repay buddy Elton for contributing to his new LP, John appeared singing harmony and providing instrumentation for two tracks slated for Elton’s new Caribou album. And Elton wasn’t the only pal to be paid a visit - Ringo Starr‘s new album, Goodnight Vienna, was given its name after former bandmate John’s title track contribution to the sessions. With Paul in the studio rehearsing his new Wings lineup, and George touting the new Dark Horse Records act called Splinter, it seemed that the Beatles were just as productive and vital as ever - even four years after the band’s split. The Berean Manifesto

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 20, 2020 9:21

Hello and welcome to season 2 episode 61 of The Berean Manifesto, brought to you by The Ekklesian House.   This is Pastor Bill and over the next 10 minutes, or so, we are going to be talking about tithing.  We're going to cover a fair amount of scripture in this episode, so if you have trouble focusing while I'm reading you scripture then get to a place where you can block out distractions, pour a cup of coffee, or crack open an energy drink and let's get going. For the most part, I don't directly choose what topics we cover in this podcast.  I pray, listen to The Holy Spirit, and try my best to follow the unction that I get from The Lord.  I'm not oblivious to the fact that this process can be, and is, influenced by my theology and worldview.  I also believe that The Holy Spirit inspires us, all of us, to ministry that is in line with growth: our own personal growth, and those within our sphere of influence.  All of that to say that we haven't committed a lot of time on this podcast to talking about money, and we've never used this ministry platform to solicit donations.  If you're going to donate money to us or some other ministry or church then it should be because you've decided between you and God in your heart that you're going to give, and not because we talked about giving. So, tithing, if you're not aware, it's this concept that believers give the first ten percent of their increase to God through their church.  You get a paycheck, your bank account increases and you give ten percent to God through The Church.  Historically, when this was instituted in the Old Testament, the entire tithe given, minus the offerings burnt to the Lord, went to supporting the priests serving in the temple so they could focus on ministry.  The priests then would give ten percent of what they received back into the temple to be used to support ministry.  Today things look very different.  Despite it being the biblical standard, if your church tried to use all of the tithes it received on paying its staff and then the tithe of the staff on the work of the church, it would get shut down by the government or at the very least lose its nonprofit status, assuming it survived public opinion long enough to get to that point. With only ten to twenty-five percent of the average church congregation tithing, it clearly isn't a popular thing to do.  It doesn't likely constitute the whole statistic, but from millennials forward, the idea of donating money to a church is almost a foreign concept.  In defense of tithing let's first turn to Matthew 22:17-22, it says, “[17] Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?" [18] Perceiving their malicious intent, Jesus said, "Why are you testing me, hypocrites? [19] Show me the coin used for the tax." They brought him a denarius. [20] "Whose image and inscription is this?" he asked them. [21] "Caesar's," they said to him. Then he said to them, "Give, then, to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." [22] When they heard this, they were amazed. So, they left him and went away.”  On its face, this looks like an endorsement of paying your taxes, which it is.  But, it's also an endorsement of paying your tithes.  Malachi 3:8 CSB, it says, “[8] "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me!" "How do we rob you?" you ask. "By not making the payments of the tenth and the contributions.”  The tenth, or tithe, belongs to God.  What did Jesus say, “Give, then, to Caesar the things that are Ceasar's, and to God the things that are God's.” Malachi 3 starting in verse 10 goes on to say, Malachi 3:10-12 CSB “[10] Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. (That's The Church, His house.) Test me in this way," says the LORD of Armies. "See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure. [11] I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not ruin the produce of your land and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit," says the LORD of Armies. [12] "Then all the nations will consider you fortunate, for you will be a delightful land," says the LORD of Armies.”  I don't know about you, but having the floodgates of heaven opened, the devourer rebuked for my sake, and my work to be guaranteed to produce fruit sounds like quite the tradeoff for giving God His ten cents on the dollar.  Even if that is an over personalized reading of that scripture, anywhere between that and if the intent was one of nationwide effect, I benefit from the tithes that I pay. It's not wrong to interpret that in a personal way though.  In Luke 6:38 CSB, Jesus is recorded as saying, “[38] Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure-pressed down, shaken together, and running over-will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you."  With Paul in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 CSB reinforcing this personal benefit, “[6] The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. [7] Each person should do as he has decided in his heart-not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. [8] And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.” There's the old adage, “put your money where your mouth is.”  If you're a Christian then you should be putting your money where your mouth is, you should be tithing.  Not only does your tithe support the church, but Proverbs 3:9 CSB says to, “[9] Honor the LORD with your possessions and with the first produce of your entire harvest;”  If you claim to love God and follow Jesus, then honor the Lord with your tithe. The modern church is hobbling along trying to fulfill its calling while missing seventy-five to ninety percent of the support its biblically supposed to have from believers.  Meanwhile, those with the responsibility of carrying the mantle of those churches are splitting their time between ministry and working one or more jobs outside the church to survive.  When we turn to the first part of 1 Corinthians 16:2a CSB, we read, “[2] On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he is prospering,”  In context, that verse comes about in the instructions to a church concerning donations from a specific situation where Paul was planning on traveling for ministry, but it reinforces the biblical precedence that as Christians we have a personal and community-driven duty to be tithing. This is Pastor Bill saying, “Until next time…”

Hot on the heels of their successful new album Red Rose Speedway and monster worldwide hit My Love, Paul McCartney and Wings were ready to take the stage, at long last, in the United Kingdom. This would be Paul’s first such tour of his home country since 1966, the year The Beatles stopped touring. Unlike the Wings University Tour a year prior, the band was now taking the stage in planned concert events in some of the same locations graced by the fab four in their heyday, and McCartney’s rocking new ensemble did not disappoint. From raucous rockers like Soily, Big Barn Bed, The Mess and their soon-to-be-smash single Live And Let Die, to the epic ballads Paul had become so known for since those aforementioned Beatle days, Wings travelled the country and dominated each stop. Manchester, Bristol, Oxford, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, London’s legendary Hammersmith Odeon -- this was a rock and roll band at their peak. While Wings took the country by storm, George Harrison was busy putting the final touches on his upcoming LP, his first full length record of new material since 1970’s mammoth All Things Must Pass. With Paul finally achieving the critical and commercial success that eluded his early solo works, would George (the critical and commercial darling up to this point) have the goods to go toe to toe with the Macca machine? THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

Being born the son of a Pentecostal preacher and the nephew of a real-life pimp made for an interesting childhood and adolescence for roots rocker and songwriter, Paul Thorn.  Add to that combination, having music deep in your soul while growing up in Elvis Presley’s hometown, singing in many of the same churches he did as a youth, and being a close personal friend of the guy that first taught The King how to play guitar, and you’ve got yourself an interesting concoction that helped mold Paul Thorn into the artist he is today. Growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi, and following his preaching father to both “white” churches and “black” churches in town, Paul was exposed both styles of congregational music which helped lay an early foundation for his musical stylings. In this interview Paul talks with us about his early career as a songwriter under the tutelage of legendary producer Rick Hall and shares a couple stories about Rick, including how he passed on the chance to record and produce The Allman Brothers. Interestingly enough, prior to Paul’s success as a songwriter and performing artist, he was also a pretty damn good boxer.  His success in the ring helped move him up the ranks as a middleweight boxer and eventually led to a televised bout with legendary boxer, Roberto Duran.  The fight was eventually stopped and went in favor of Duran, but Paul gave an impressive performance, going six rounds with one of the best to ever climb in the ring.  You can watch the fight HERE. As Paul’s career as a songwriter and performer began to gain momentum, other artists began to take notice, and some even started recording his tunes themselves.  Most notably, Toby Keith cut Paul’s song “Double-wide Paradise”; Paul, with tongue-in-cheek, says it was Toby’s lowest charting single ever. Paul is also the writer of the song “Mood Ring” that has become a favorite of Wade Bowen fans. With Paul being one of my favorite songwriters and artists, this interview was a real treat for me.  I hope you guys dig listening to it as much as I did recording it! Bryan Victor has never taken a traditional path but he doesn’t know any other way. Perhaps that is why he started his own podcast in Singapore, Misfits, which interviews unconventional Singaporeans. At 20, he saved up $10,000 while he was serving required military time and decided he would travel the world for a year. During the trip, he realized this was all the “schooling” he needed (see 10 things I learned). After learning how he could live simply on very little money, he knew that this opened up many options for him. He knew that he would always value flexibility over maximizing income, learning this lesson earlier than others.Regardless of any position towards “formal” schooling, his chosen path, wedding planning, wasn’t something you learned at school. He knew he had to create his own internship. So before his trip, he wrote to 50 American wedding planners (the best, he says), to ask if he could work with them. One person gave him a chance and he was able to learn while making enough money to live.Going back to Singapore, he couldn’t get anyone to hire him, so he realized he was “forced” to create his own wedding planning business. In the process, he became named one of Singapore’s Top 10 Wedding Planners (though he argues there weren’t that many anyway!).After proving he could make it, he started dabbling with a side business, 2D animation and founded Sage Animation. He decided to give the wedding planning business away as a gift and was able to find one person (out of 40) that he thought would do a great job.Bryan has been fascinated with understanding what makes him happy. As he was on another trip in the United States, he was drawn to another project (motivated by the #vanlife movement) to build a liveable van for himself. While he accomplished the feat, he found that he was overcome with a “something-like depression” feeling after he achieved it. While he thought he had everything, it led to a new and deeper curiosity in what actually leads to happiness. While this is one of Rachael’s favourite films of all time, the rest of the team might take a little more convincing. With Paul on the fence once more, whose side will he ultimately come down upon? Will it be Rachael’s side, where the allure of Parisian apartments and café culture looms large and there is ample room to project our fantasies and desires onto the lead characters? Or will Andy’s talk of non-entity romantic leads, kitten photographs and too many subplots coax Paul into his slightly more withered garden of doubt? Would Audrey Tautou have been better suited to silent cinema than the talkies? Is talking about Princess Diana as controversial as upsetting cat owners? Did art take over to stop this film from becoming a masterpiece (whatever the hell that means!)? We tackle all these burning issues as well as answering the ultimate question: kissing on the eyes… romantic or ooky? Fighting through darkness and despair and pleading for the light is what opened this dispensation. It is what keeps it going, and it is what will keep you going. With Paul, I say to all of you: Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. [Hebrews 10:35–36] This talk deals with the difficulties that we all face, sometimes simple issues, sometimes crushing ones. Our Savior has told us again and again, in many different ways to not be afraid. Even when there are reasons to be afraid, we are commanded to keep going. The music for this comes from a video Rigeletto... it's a touching song of a young girl who made the choice to do what was right, amid significant pressure to cave. This scene is doubly powerful as she is singing and proving her worth, her teacher is being brutally murdered by a mob because of perceived injustices. It's a reminder to always, always focus on what is right, and let that be your standard regardless of cost or difficulty.

Letters From Prison / Week 3. The gospel in suffering

With Paul, our confidence and joy in the gospel must never be marginalized by trials. We find out in verses 12-18 of Philippians that Paul's suffering produced a spread of the gospel that took over he's prison cell mates and guards. Through this we can learn that our situations do not hinder the gospel from spreading no matter how bad they seem.

Faith Bible Fellowship Church of York

With Paul and Silas unjustly imprisoned, God sends an earthquake which frees their chains and opens the prison doors. But when Paul and Silas do not leave the jail, the jailer sees and receives salvation by believing in the Lord Jesus. Salvation is found in Christ along and God can use our circumstances of hardship and suffering to bring people to saving faith.

We talk about how old people are like lizards, as well as Hope Solo's uhhh "problems", and the legalization of Gay marriage, finally! We had an interview with a Canadian band, Autopilot, but were asked to redact it for some ridiculous reason. In true No Guarantees style we kept the audio and will save it for a rainy day. Last week's conversation with original KISS road crew member, Peter "Moose" Oreckinto, was the fastest downloaded episode in Decibel Geek history. On top of that, it's elicited some of the best feedback we've ever had. This week we're proud to bring you another long-form discussion with Moose! In this week's episode, Moose returns to share more road stories from the early days of KISS as well as some memories of his return to the band in a management capacity on the Destroyer tour. First, some business to attend to: The interview clip that you hear at the beginning of the show of Peter Criss speaking of Moose  is courtesy of Annika Sonic from The Sonic Boom LIVE show on 95.3 DNH in Honesdale, PA. Check out the show HERE As some of you may know, the original intention of this week's episode was to have an in-person discussion between Moose and Aaron Camaro. The conversation did take place, at The Rainbow Bar & Grill no less, but technical gremlins got hold of the file and the audio was lost. Luckily, Moose was nice enough to do part 2 through Skype.  Moose showing Aaron whereKISS roadies were harassedin front of The Rainbow While at the legendary Rainbow, Aaron and Moose received some first class service and food from their waitress Julie and the staff there. So, this week's Geek(s) of the Week are the staff at The Rainbow Bar and Grill. Check out the Rainbow online HERE. We dive into the conversation discussing KISS' rehearsals and showcase at the famous Fillmore East in late December 1973 into early 1974. With Paul wearing the short-lived bandit makeup and the band using a short-lived spiderweb backdrop, it's an interesting moment in KISStory. We get Moose's memories of this time including a heated exchange between him and a Casablanca Records executive. In this discussion, you'll also get Moose's recollections of KISS' first trip out west to provide the entertainment for the Casablanca Records launch party at the Century Plaza Hotel as well as their television debut a few days later at the Aquarius Theater for Dick Clark's In Concert program. Speaking of television, we also get Moose's memories of the band's wild appearance on the Mike Douglas Show and how the low ceilings in the studio presented some problems for the band's pyrotechnics. Mike Douglas & Gene Simmons KISS' first appearance on June 1st, 1974 was a big moment on the band's climb up the ladder but money problems were plaguing the band and, especially, the crew. Moose shares his memories of the crew being stranded in San Francisco with no money for food or gas to get to the next show 1800 miles away in Minot, North Dakota. We also hear Moose's memories of returning to KISS after his injury to be the assistant road manager on the Destroyer tour and how it differed from his previous job working with the special effects. Some interesting takes on Ace and Peter from the road. 1976-77 Destroyer Tour Stage Set Other subjects touched on in this in-depth discussion include KISS' strange appearance at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska in front of a very shocked group of soldiers and their families, Moose's memories of Joyce Biawitz/Bogart, his time after KISS working with artists such as Angel and Alice Cooper, and how he met his wife (there IS a KISS connection). The book that has been referenced in this episode, and last week's, is the upcoming 'Nothin' to Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975)' in which Moose is quoted as well as 200 others that worked with/for the band during those formative years. This book was put together by the band and author Ken Sharp and is expected to be one of, if not the, best KISS-related book to be released. Pre-Order Nothin' to Lose HERE. Aaron Camaro & Mooseposing with the upcomingNothin' to Lose book. The Decibel Geek podcast thanks Peter "Moose" Oreckinto for his time and amazing stories on the early days of KISS. This will, no doubt, lead to more appearances in the future as we've really become close with Moose and look forward to more in the future. We wish him all the best in his personal ventures as well as for the success of the upcoming book. Ethan Robish is a researcher with Black Hills Information Security and is here to give us some of the background on a suite of tools for the Offensive Countermeasures class - Active Defense Harbinger Distribution. The Active Defense Harbinger Distribution (ADHD) is a Linux distro based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It comes with many tools aimed at active defense preinstalled and configured. The purpose of this distribution is to aid defenders by giving them tools to "strike back" at the bad guys. A lean week in episode 319's Drunken security news, but at least the house was full with PDC staff. With Paul, Larry, Allison and Jack in-studio and John and Carlos via Skype to fill us in on all the fun. But first, make sure to not miss the other two segments from episode 319. First was 451 Research's Wendy Nather to talk with the team, and then Ethan Robish and John Strand came on to talk about a brand new distribution. If you like distributions like Samurai, Backtrack and others, you might be interested in this one. Titled ADHD (Active Defense Harbinger Distribution) this has been three years in the making and takes on offensive security with many of the tools you love. As for the stories of the week, Paul started off with a couple quick hits, including a joke about the Federal Reserve hack and bugs in hospital embedded devices. Then follow along as Jack goes a long way to make a joke about prime numbers, after one of the largest only-divisible-by-one-and-itselfs was discovered. The first story they dig into is one that Larry brought along, about SSL/TLS being broken. After some explanation on the Oracle padding issue and the use of the same key, John and Larry bring up Wright's Law (to be discussed in episode 320 on Tuesday). Larry wonders, who is working on fixing SSL and if there is someone with a fix today, it could take five years until it is fully implemented. Do you need anything more than six seconds? Apparently if you use Vine for Twitter, that's all you'll need. It's a new video sharing service, but all you get is six seconds of video. And what happens on Vine stays on Vine, right? Umm, no. What would you do if you were Adobe's CISO? Take the staff out to lunch? Quit? Or actually get things cleaned up. I guess at least they're not Sony. Congratulations to Allison who is Gold GCIA certified after her paper on digital watermarking to help prevent leaks. You can read the entire thing in the SANS Reading Room. Lastly, Larry drops an "I told you so" with regard to Universal Plug and Play (uPnP). As Larry wrote, now there is a single Packet UDP exploit for it, for almost every device - of which there are millions of devices connected to the internet based on HD Moore's scanning. Oh and if your company is looking for their next great employee (or if you get a referral bonus) contact Larry with the opportunity.
