On this installment of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI, Michael Clinton, author of “ROAR into the Second Half of Your Life," will share his findings about the most significant social movement of our time. He says it's happening now. In this “people's revolution,” mature Americans (50 and over) kick-start new careers, pursue new lifestyles and find new loves. And they're challenging everything they were told about the second half of their lives. Mature Americans are taking pride in their “true” age (70 is the new 70 etc). Michael will also discuss how the pandemic caused million to reassess their careers and march into the "Great Resignation." Michael Clinton is a mature markets expert and columnist for Esquire and Men's Health. He has worked in publishing for four decades; serving as president and publishing director of Hearst Magazines, Executive Vice President of Conde Nast and other industry roles. Michael is a prime source for demographic data and marketing strategies that support under-served mature markets. Callers were welcomed to join this refreshing conversation as Michael expounded on “Reimagineers” – who they are and how they can ignore the rules, pursue new passions and conceive a whole new script.

Hello friends! Today we welcome one of the big guns of analytics to our show, Diego Oppenheimer. He is an entrepreneur, product developer, co-founder of Algorithmia, Microsoft alumni, rugby aficionado, and current Executive Vice President at DataRobot. Nothing is off the table in this romp through topics that run the gambit from machine learning to quantum computing. Even string theory gets a mention. Make sure you have had your coffee for this one, though, as the conversation takes a technical turn not often seen on this show. Rob and Tom engage with Diego in a lively debate on complexity versus flexibility of tools. Shockingly, this guest manages to tweak a host's nose (through no fault of his own as times and DBA roles have changed and evolved). Today's conversations with Diego have inspired a new classification of the data gene: data enthusiasm. This rare variation is not often seen in the public sector but allows people like Diego to brazenly assert to business owners and stakeholders that he can show you things about your business you don't even know . . . and be completely accurate. Buckle up and crank this one up. You won't want to miss a single minute as the data gets raw. References in this episode: Wolf of Wall Street Goodfellas World Simulation

For years, fossil fuel companies have claimed to support climate science and policy. Many have recently pledged to hit net zero emissions by midcentury. Yet behind the scenes they fight those very same policies through industry associations, shadow groups, and lobbying – all while spending vast sums on advertising and PR campaigns touting their climate commitments. This week we focus on the PR and law firms helping fossil fuel companies delay the transition to clean energy while claiming they are on the side of climate protection. Guests: Benjamin Franta, PhD candidate in History of Science, Stanford University. It's important to recognize that when we're dealing with a very new or rapidly changing phenomenon, like we have been with the pandemic, even the "scientific consensus" can easily be wrong because there's not been much time for the rigorous replicability studies to be conducted or even sometimes to accurately measure the proper effect sizes. However, I also believe it's important that we don't create a false equivalency between very fringe ideas that are unsupported by the current evidence base and a scientific consensus that is grounded in rigorous methodology. This is why I sought out the counsel of Dr. Eric Topol on today's show. Despite being one of the top 10 most cited researchers in medicine and being extremely well regarded in his field of cardiology, he's also been a bright light on social media, shining a light on the best available evidence in the pandemic. He thoughtfully considered all my questions and was very careful to make clear what the current evidence base says without ruling out alternative possibilities in the future in light of new evidence. In this episode, we cover a number of hot button issues surrounding the pandemic including the potential use of ivermectin to end the pandemic, the potential for increased risk of myocarditis among certain populations after vaccination. We even discuss the role human psychology and human behavior have played in this pandemic. Ultimately, Dr. Topol is optimistic about the future of the pandemic and outlines things coming down the horizon that should give us hope. But as we discussed, the major problems tend to be human problems. BioEric Topol is a cardiologist, scientist, and author. He is the Founder and Director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, Professor of Molecular Medicine, and Executive Vice-President of Scripps Research. As a researcher, he has published over 1200 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 290,000 citations, elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and is one of the top 10 most cited researchers in medicine. Dr. Topol has been voted as the #1 most Influential physician leader in the United States in a national poll conducted by Modern Healthcare. Besides editing several textbooks, he has published 3 bestseller books on the future of medicine: The Creative Destruction of Medicine, The Patient Will See You Now, and Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again.Website: drerictopol.comTwitter: @EricTopol Topics05:51 What is Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)?08:21 COVID-19 vaccines are humanity's greatest medical achievement12:05 Infection acquired immunity13:47 Vaccine and COVID induced myocarditis 16:56 The efficacy of booster shots 20:20 Ivermectin studies: what does the data say? 25:15 How to improve pandemic response30:02 Hope for the future of the pandemic
In Maya's interview with Chris Copeland, Director and Producer at Dreamworks, they discuss — among other things — what it means to live authentically, how that lends to his role leading creative teams, and why diverse teams tend to tell better, more interesting stories. In addition to pushing through some of the biggest projects BRC has in production, Carmel oversees the team casting and can be largely credited for the culture BRC enjoys today. The business world is rife with sports analogies. After all, there are remarkable similarities between what happens in athletics and in the boardroom. Troy Vincent is the embodiment of this parallel. As a 15-year veteran of the National Football League, he took the leadership skills he learned as a player—communication, presence, resiliency, game planning—and applies them in his current position, Executive Vice President of Football Operations of the NFL. Different sides of the sidelines, same desired outcome: success. In this episode, Troy talks about how he became a respected, impactful, integrity-driven leader—critical insights for anyone in a leadership role—and why sustainable leadership and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I) efforts are necessary in order to make organizations stronger. It's a game plan you'll definitely want to study.

Lastly, reflects on how Christians might approach the topic of marijuana policy.
Likely on the phone in your hand, while you're playing this very podcast, is an app or site using Akamai in the background, so that you can listen, search, and discover new information as fast as you can think, type, or speak. Accelerating the delivery of the right content and blocking potentially harmful content are the nitty-gritty details that Akamai solves to give you a safe and seamless experience. Leading the charge to improve security and accelerate connectivity is Dr. Robert Blumofe, Executive Vice President and CTO of Akamai. Main TakeawaysPower and Protect Together: A common problem with security is that it slows things down for users and causes them to want to avoid using the security measures in the first place. To solve this problem, Dr. Blumofe explains that Akamai has integrated security and performance products on its platform so that they can work cooperatively. The lesson here for any sort of business is to constantly be considering how security and performance can function seamlessly so that neither is hindered by the other,Endpoint to Endpoint Mindset: Since the world is becoming more remote and more open, security must adapt to this environment. According to Dr. Blumofe, this means the framework of being on a network versus off a network is no longer really applicable. Instead, it is more helpful to consider how apps are connected together from one endpoint to another. The Office as a Coffee Shop: You can think about a new problem, like an increase in remote work, as being stressful, or as a chance to reframe it as an opportunity. Dr. Blumofe points out that returning to the office for face-to-face time will be even more purposeful — sort of like hanging out at the coffee shop with colleagues. He describes solving for the new remote office network as a high-performance coffee shop as being a “freeing and enabling concept.” The new perimeter-less architecture of access can actually facilitate collaboration.IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Key Takeaways - LTL: Then and Now History of LTL Less-than-truckload carriers began operating in the 1920's when the economy was very spread out and driven by manufacturing. Overtime the less-than-truckload business has shifted from a heavily unionized industry to a mostly non-union industry. When deregulation of the trucking industry occurred in 1980, 55 of the top 60 less-than-truckload carriers were union, today only 3 of the top 60 less-than-truckload carriers are union. The LTL market is about one tenth the size of the truckload market. Only 5 carriers control about 60% of the less-than-truckload freight market: FedEx, Old Dominion, XPO, Estes, and TForce Freight (which acquired UPS Freight). LTL Future: Pricing The less-than-truckload pricing is complex and the industry is slowing moving to a new pricing model that will be simpler. The outdated tariff model is going away as smart carriers adopt technology and dimensioners that enable them to better cost the freight. LTL Future: Modal Mix The LTL industry is right between the small package market (UPS, FedEx) and the truckload market. In the past, the small package and truckload carriers were able to win some of the business that would have normally gone to the LTL carriers. Today, the modal mix is very favorable to LTL carriers because truckload carriers and the small package providers are swamped and they can't compete with the LTL pricing. LTL Future: Ecommerce Ecommerce and the Amazon effect has sped up the entire supply chain, which is good for the less-than-truckload business. Ecommerce fulfillment centers often need more frequent replenishment of smaller quantity sizes. As a result, ecommerce has been very beneficial for the less-than-truckload business. To support same-day and next-day shipments, there is a trend of fulfillment centers being smaller and closer to consumers. This trend will be very advantageous for the less-than-truckload industry. LTL Future: Labor Less-than-truckload Truck drivers are generally paid more thank truckload drivers. The less-than-truckload industry is facing a serious shortage of drivers and dock workers. The Biden administration is pro-union, which could potentially impact the less-than-truckload industry. Less-than-truckload shippers and carriers are learning the importance of making the job more attractive for drivers and dock workers. “This is the company that really changed the access the rest of the United States had to get fresh, leafy greens.” Lori Taylor (5:28-5:35) Even though Tanimura & Antle wasn't “officially” launched until 1982, the families that make up this incredible fresh produce team have a legacy that stems from 100 years of growing experience. The Tanimura family and Antle family lived 40 miles apart from each other, with the Tanimura family emigrating from Japan and the Antle family migrating to California from Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl in the 1920's. During World War Two, the Antle family agreed to watch over the Tanimura's land while some of the Tanimura family was placed in internment camps and two of the brothers fought in the war. When the war was over, the two families had an unmatched partnership and bond and decided to join forces; the Tanimuras growing the lettuce and the Antles marketing and selling it under their brand. What started as a relationship between two families with a love for produce has now grown into a global company with 30,000 acres on the west coast, 7,000 employees annually, and sales across the Nation and internationally. Brian Antle, who got his start on the farm at the ripe age of 14 when he would get paid to move sprinkler pipes (a vital part of irrigation), jokes that “the plan was to get to 100,000 cases of produce a week.” The company now sells almost 140,000 boxes a day and about 40 million cases a year! Tanimura & Antle's core products are iceberg lettuce, romaine, red and green leaf, cauliflower, broccoli and celery. They also have organic produce, greenhouse grown produce, and an Artisan line of products that are uniquely branded for their different taste profiles, colors, qualities and crunchability. The Artisan family of specialty produce includes their Artisan Lettuce, Artisan Romaine, Artisan Sweet Gem, Artisan Baby Iceberg, Artisan Sweet Red Onions and Artisan Sweet Broccoli. “They were the first company that put iceberg lettuce on a rail car on ice and shipped it from California to New York City and it arrived fresh. From there, as they say, the rest is history.” Lori Taylor (5:45-5:56) The cool thing about Tanimura & Antle is the many ‘firsts' the company has ignited for the produce industry. Their family was the first to pack and wrap a head of lettuce in cellophane. They were also the first to use cardboard boxes and cool produce in vacuum cooling tubes prior to shipping, allowing the entire produce industry to move away from needing to ice everything and use rail cars. Speaking of innovation, Tanimura & Antle even breeds their own seed genetics! The company can tailor their lettuce, to have a certain color, size or taste. They can also breed plants to become more resistant to certain disease or mildew pressures. Innovations in seed genetics ultimately allows Tanimura & Antle to harvest more product for consumption and decrease food waste at the field level. This is all done through natural plant breeding, none of these seeds are genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Tanimura & Antle truly strives to find sustainability in every corner of their operations! Another innovative practice of the company is the use of automated technology. Tanimura & Antle has a group of diversified businesses, one of those being Stout, a company focused on “smart farm equipment”. With the cost and shortages of skilled agricultural labor, farmers are being challenged with doing more with less every day. Tanimura & Antle is investing in machines that can help supplement these labor shortages, such as machines that eliminate weeds in the field using artificial intelligence and computer vision systems. Machines like this will allow farmers to [AP1] utilize the employees in areas of agricultural production that cannot be automated, such as harvesting or operating these new machines. While this type of innovation can sometimes be viewed as eliminating jobs, they're not. Innovations like this allow farmers to supplement the shortages within their work force in order to continue to feed the world. “The ground is the most valuable asset we have next to our employees. Without either one, there is no sustainability.” Brian Antle (29:16-29:23) One key to Tanimura & Antle's success is how much they value the ground they grow on. They're constantly rotating their crops and focus on keeping the ground healthy. Without healthy soil, they know they cannot grow a healthy crop. Tanimura & Antle views their employees as their #1 asset. They ensure their employees are taken care of by providing things like a low cost employee housing complex, access to full health benefits, a matched 401k and one of the their proudest innovations, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). They were one of the first major grower shippers to adopt an ESOP in the United States! In 2017, the Tanimura and Antle families made the decision to make their employees official business partners and sold a portion of the company to the employees, creating the ESOP. The ESOP allows employees to earn ownership stocks of the company through years of service and loyalty to the company. When it comes to enjoying their produce, make sure to try one of their Artisan or Greenhouse Grown vegetables. You can find Tanimura & Antle in most major grocery retailers across North America, and if not, be sure to ask your local produce manager to put Tanimura & Antle's branded items on your grocery store shelf! A company's position about digital transformation could be out with the old and in with the new. But, generally, if a product or service has existed for a long time, that's because it has held its value. In a legacy business with good values and a deep tradition, digitization of services is more about improving respected systems as well as innovating with a forward-looking mindset. Stacey Goodman, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Prudential Financial, describes her strategy for transforming the digital experience at Prudential.Main TakeawaysTransforming a Legacy Company: It's a big lift to digitally transform a legacy company such as Prudential, which has existed for 145 years. But a company with good values and an established track record of delivering for customers has a great foundation on which to build upon. In other words, challenges are opportunities. One challenge that Prudential constantly faces is scale combined with the complexity of its life insurance and annuities products. Furthermore, a company with so much history also has a high volume of products that must be managed.Marriage Between Customer and CIO Priorities: Most customers want more access at the touch of their fingertips. Prudential customers want to be able to see their assets whenever they want; particularly, during times of economic uncertainty. Customers desire the freedom to explore and make their own choices yet advisement help when needed. As CIO, Goodman's goals are in support of what customers desire. For instance, she cares about making sure customers can easily get their password, or that robotic advice is readily available when customers want help.Culture and Dynamic Work Attracts Talent: Goodman has a unique mindset regarding attracting and retaining talent at Prudential. Fundamentally, she sees the company having a good culture and providing interesting work. She makes the point that sometimes startup culture and work does not always meet the hype and that working at Prudential can provide employees a comfortable environment. An established company with well-defined structures in place can support its workers. She sees Prudential as the sort of place where employees want to be.IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Technology has been disrupting the journalism industry to its core for decades. As younger generations come of age, the need to keep them informed in ways that reach and speak to them requires moving into new verticals, and maybe even thinking about who your competitors are differently. After all, what is news today? How is it consumed, ingested, and most importantly where is it coming from? Mayur Gupta, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer at Gannett, knows this because he's living it, and if there on thing he's focused on now, it's reaching that younger generation.“We want to continue to index younger and younger. That's the growth segment we want to penetrate. So we are evolving and making a lot of investment in evolving our experiences, our content, the verticals. We are using a lot of those signals to identify what are the types of content? What formats, what type of experiences should we mark premium? At the same time, what does a premium experience look and feel like? And we know that as a user, you are living in this world where there's no dearth of great content. We don't compare ourselves with other journalism brands. We compare ourselves with the Netflix's, the Apple's, the Spotify's of the world because in the end, it's all content. Their world perhaps begins and indexes more on fiction. If you ask me in one phrase, my vision for the company, me personally, I would love to build a Netflix for non-fiction content which is the premier source and destination.”Building a new brand identity in an established empire like Gannett is no small task. Mayur, listed as one of Forbes World's Most Influential CMOs, explains how he taught marketing to himself while on the road for another job. In this episode he shows how he's taken the helm at one of journalism's most respected brands, and is driving the company towards reaching younger audiences as a growth strategy. He gives some insight into his strategy on unifying large and non-monolithic systems that have been in place for years. Plus, he shares some of the big lessons he learned at companies such as Freshly, and Spotify. All this up next on Marketing Trends. Main Takeaways:Index to a Younger Crowd: One of the best places to go when thinking about growth, as a legacy brand, is thinking about how to reach a different demographic or population with your product or service. Change the format, the style, the content itself, and then begin testing and looking at the numbers to find what's working. Get creative with how you see yourself as an organization to open yourself up to more opportunities for expanding into new verticals. Building a Strong Brand: Also a unique challenge for legacy brands is thinking about how to quantify and show the metrics on an audioce that's been following you for decades, and that you've never-before had this kind of understanding about. You just need to get creative with the numbers to help show the ‘top of funnel' investment impact on efficiency of your growth marketing efforts. The Challenge of Unifying a Non-Monolithic System: One of the challenges in working with a company that has over 100 years of brand history and legacy also means that there might be a lot of piece-meal tech in place that you have to address. Updating the infrastructure for content management, and implementing a universal tech stack for the data ecosystem might be the best first step to take in order to have trust and confidence in your data moving forward. Key Quotes:“There was no marketing for dummies. I would go back because I would be into so much pressure talking to these guys who build these ad servers that are serving hundreds of billions of impressions. And they're talking about pixels and encryption, I had no clue. I didn't even know what a publisher was, what a target is, what a venue and a placement is because I'm coming from a totally different world. So I would go to Wikipedia. I would go back to my hotel, and I would understand, ‘oh, this is what they mean.'””There is something inherent for kids at least in my time who came from countries like India and many more where you have way more number of people and applicants than the opportunities that are within the ecosystem where when you get an A your parents don't get a back then the parents would not get excited. You got an ‘A' grade. They want to know who else got an ‘A plus' because [unless] you are coming first at something, you don't really have a shot at getting anywhere because they're just not enough resources.”“It's an unusual challenge and a role that I took on and feel very grateful and fortunate to have been given the opportunity. It's an evolution from a hundred-year-old legacy advertising-led media business that has been typically obsessed with eyeballs and traffic to now fundamentally pivoting, to becoming a subscription content business that needs to be obsessed with user value and no longer eyeballs. That's a 180 degree turn all the way from what data you store and what KPIs and what north star metrics are relevant to the mind and the culture and so on.” “When you build that strong brand, that is culturally connected the challenge that we have on our site that we have to own is ‘how do you prove that incrementality with data, not just with emotion, how do you get creative with data and prove that the growth of your top of funnel investment, the growth in that brand of affinity actually has an impact on the efficiency of your growth marketing efforts in terms of efficiency in your cap, in terms of incrementality in your retention rate or a higher lifetime value until we bring that data.”“We are investing just as much in data engineering and cleaning that up and looking for an organization like us, which is a portfolio of 260 brands within local markets. That's the massive challenge because this company has grown with a series of acquisitions and mergers over the last four or five decades. We are not on a monolithic system. We've come a long, long way. We now have a universal content management system. We now have universal instrumentation and we are now getting a universal stack when it comes to our data ecosystem. So that's the mechanical part, building the muscle to understand how we apply all these different levels and variables to predict the future.”“We want to continue to index younger and younger. We compare ourselves with the Netflix'sthe Apple's, the Spotify's of the world, because at the end, it's all content. Their world perhaps begins and indexes more on fiction. If you ask me in one phrase, my vision for the company, me personally, I would love to build a Netflix for non-fiction content which is the premier source and destination.”Bio:Mayur Gupta served on Gannett's Board of Directors from October 2019 to September 2020, when he was named Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer. We've all had moments where we've been a little too obsessed with a movie, celebrity, or sports team. A moment when we take a step back and go “wait…did I really think dressing up like Hannah Montana for a week at school would make Miley Cyrus notice me?” (not based on true events!!). Obsessing over our passions has been a staple part of pop culture for centuries, and Berlin in the 1840s was no different. Franz Liszt was taking the world by storm, and people were losing their minds. But how did he capitalize on their fandom? And more importantly, how can we capture that same energy and dedication as it relates to our customers?
