Episode 766 | Adriel Sanchez and Bill Maier answer caller questions. Show Notes CoreChristianity.com Questions in this Episode The Bible says that, "no one has seen the face of God." But is that the case for Adam and Eve, didn't they see God in Eden? How should we respond when someone says that they have “received a Word from the Lord”? My pastor only talks about how the "election was stolen" instead of talking about Jesus. What should I do? Does Paul contradict himself in Romans 8? What do you make of the "lost books of the Bible" that have become a hot button topic, like the Gospel according to Judas? “Do not let your good be spoken of as evil.” How can good be spoken of as evil? As we continue St. Paul's lessons on love and the correct Christian attitude toward each other, how are we to apply that lesson against judging another servant of the Lord? It's easy to talk about loving others, but as a practical matter, how do we resolve conflicts in our own parish community over various issues? Does Paul's instruction against judging another's servant mean that we are to say nothing? Does this mean that we are to disregard our Orthodox traditions or ignore them? Is it ever appropriate to correct others? On the other extreme, do we bear any responsibility if we scandalize others by following only our own opinion? St. John Chrysostom has plenty to say about these issues.
Given our current context and the daily challenges we all face, it is often difficult to feel blessed. Life for Christians of the early church was no picnic, either. So why is the apostle Paul so ecstatic about how blessed he is? Why is so intentional about cultivating gratitude? Does Paul know something we don't? Check out this message to find out.
The Apostle Paul desires to meet with the Thessalonian church, but there is no clear path to make this happen. Paul is frustrated because the Thessalonian church does not seem very rooted in the gospel. Does Paul think that the Lord is only as strong as the apostle or his people? What is the assurance in knowing that our Lord Jesus Christ will direct his way to them? What does this tell us about Christ and the Lord's sovereign will? How does this assure us about the outcome of our faith?
SOJOURNERS | Part 10 | Pastor Jon Adams How do you feel about the word CHANGE? Some people love that word, but for many, change is difficult. Change can be emotionally draining, especially if it's change we didn't anticipate or ask for. Does Paul's life as a sojourner have anything to teach us about change? I believe it does. This Sunday, we'll join Paul in the middle of his third missionary trip, through a riot in Ephesus and another attempt on his life in Greece. And in the midst of another chaotic chapter in Acts, we'll get to hear Paul's secret for handling change in his life—three simple words that gave him constant peace, no matter what changes he faced. Whether you're a change-lover or change-hater, our text on Sunday will provide a biblical filter to guide you through whatever change you're facing next.
Does Paul in Romans 16 say that Phoebe was a deacon? Should Women serve as deacons/deaconesses in a church? The biblical evidence seems to suggest that they should, according to John Piper, Thomas Schreiner and David Platt.

It's a sad thing when people that we have grown up with in church eventually get to the point where they are no longer following Christ. This is what Paul was worried about with the Thessalonians. So he sent Timothy to visit them, encourage them, and strengthen them. Paul had a loving heart- and he wanted to know if the seed that he had planted in Thessalonica had grown, and what type of soil it was growing in. He had been worried that the outside pressure would cause them to turn away from the ways of the Lord. Thankfully, when Timothy returned, he brought back good news that caused Paul to rejoice in the faith of the Thessalonians- He was encouraged by their faithfulness under persecutions- and he was exceedingly prayerful that he might be able to go and see them personally, so that he could teach them and encourage them even more. --When is the last time that you have been anxious, like Paul, over the spiritual state and protection of one of your family members or neighbors- Does Paul's example make you desire to see your family and friends continue to learn and grow in the faith-

In 2020, many of us struggled to maintain a positive attitude. As week after week and month after month passed with no end to the pandemic in sight, it was easy for even the most ardent optimist to get discouraged. In today’s reading, the apostle Paul urges his readers to “rejoice always” (v. 16). But how can we rejoice when life is hard? Does Paul’s command to rejoice mean we must never feel sad? No. What it does mean is that our sorrows will always be eclipsed by the joy we find in the Lord (Neh. 8:10; Matt. 13:44). We often see this pattern in the psalms: Sorrow, anger, or discouragement are honestly expressed, then they give way to faith, hope, and joy. (1) “Rejoice always” is the first of eight commands that collectively give a concise but challenging portrait of the Christian life. (2) “Pray continually” (v. 17) - prayer must be our constant habit. (3) “Give thanks in all circumstances” (v. 18). Have you ever wondered what God’s will is for you? Here’s part of the answer! Rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks are all part of worship. (4) “Do not quench the Spirit” (v. 19). This is a reminder not to allow our worship to become tradition-centered, entertainment-oriented, or any of the many other things it can become apart from the Holy Spirit. (5) and (6) “Do not treat prophecies with contempt, but test them all” (vv. 20– 21; see 1 Cor. 14:29–33). In our day, prophecy consists of “forthtelling” God’s truth, so these commands highlight the need to verify all human claims with Scripture. (7) and (8) “Hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil” (vv. 21–22). These are two sides of the same coin and may be regarded as capstone commands. >> Are you an optimist or a pessimist? No matter what your natural disposition, we are called to be people who rejoice, even when life presents challenges. Ask God to help you focus on Him and not on your problems.

Tracy Judnich along with his two business partners, Joe and Jeremiah, led The Bug Guys to a solid (and speedy) exit. Certus has taken over, but looking back, what would Tracy do differently? Paul gives props to Tracy's unique capabilities. You'll be hard pressed to find a denser service map. That mad focus went straight to the bottom-line. Join the conversation as The Rule of 23 goes under the interrogation lamp. What top-line and bottom-line growth did his business have? How does it compare to Mike Rogers', Jim McHale's, and...Patrick's business? The business had roots on the doors. In fact, he reveals his connection to a previous Buzz guest. The Bug Guys maximized sales at the door, but it wasn't on the doors. Tracy gives details to this specific concept plus other start-up advice. You'll hear his opinion on selling over the phone and experience with bundling sales. The funny thing is that Tracy can't turn off his salesmanship. Who knew explaining employee benefits would turn into a sales presentation? He describes how compensation is more than an hourly rate. Stick around to hear Paul preach on pricing again. James: Forging a Faith That Cuts It Lesson #4: Forging a Faith That Cuts It When It Really Counts Lesson #1: When Trials Come Ø The PURPOSE for Pain = MATURITY Ø The PROVISION for Pain = WISDOM Ø The PERSPECTIVE Toward Pain = ETERNITY Lesson #2: When Testing Comes Ø Trial = Testing or Temptation Ø Who’s responsible? Ø In order for sin to give birth there must be an inward desire and an outward lure. When these two connect, sin is born. Ø It usually starts with good desires, given by God: • Security • Significance Ø What do you fear most? Suffering or sin??? Lesson #3: When the Word Comes Ø 19,20 – The principle is set forth. ! Quick to listen ! Slow to speak ! Slow to be angry Ø 21,22 – The principle is interpreted. Ø 23-25 – The principle is illustrated. Ø 26,27 – The principle is applied. Lesson #4: When It Really Counts ü 2:1-13 Answers the question, “What happens if you don’t welcome the Word?” ü Ch. 3 Asks the question, “Who controls your tongue?” ü Chs. 4,5 Asks the question, “Who controls your life?” ü All of these questions are rooted in the verses we’ll study today, 2:14-26. But first… “An Epistle of Straw” Dr. Martin Luther ü Always at issue with St. James is the supposed contradiction with St. Paul. n James 2:24 n Ephesians 2:8-9 ü What’s the deal? Two ways of understanding and illustrating the very same thing. ü Does Paul believe there is no connection between faith and works? See Eph. 2:10. Faith Without Works is Dead ü James presents his argument in two cycles: 2:14-17 and then 2:18-26 ü Each cycle has three components: 1. States the argument in question form, 2. Illustrates the argument in question form, and 3. Summarizes the argument in statement form. The First Cycle 2:14-17 ü Read James 2:14. What is the argument? ü Remember that James is talking to believers (my brothers, and 2:1 “as believers) so the salvation talked about is not salvation from hell and damnation but salvation from living a life that is wasted. ü Our eternal life with God is secure, but the life we live on this planet until we go to be with Him is at risk. ü Read verses 15 and 16 for James illustration of the argument. ü Underline the word says… ü Why is it useless to act this way? Because words do not clothe cold backs and words do not fill empty stomachs – deeds do! ü Read verse 17 and note the words, “In the same way …” ü Faith and works are in essence inseparable. One without the other is dead. ü Does this contradict Paul? No! The Second Cycle 2:18-26 Ø Read verses 18-19. What’s the argument? Ø Suppose we claim to have faith? How can you prove what you cannot see? Ø Check out Jesus words in Mark 2 n “Jesus saw their faith” n “Which is easier to say…” Ø How do we know Jesus can forgive sins? Because He allows us to see what He can do. Ø How do we know you have faith? We see it in what you do. Ø Read verses 21-23 for James’ first illustration of the argument. Ø James talks of Father Abraham from Genesis 22 then Genesis 15. Ø Sacrifice your son n The tense of the Hebrew verb means Abraham completed the action! n How could he do that? See Heb. 11:17-19. Ø Notice how James uses this example in verse 22. Ø Read verse 25 for James’ second illustration of the argument. Ø Is it an accident that James chooses Rahab the prostitute to illustrate his point? What’s the significance? Ø James conclusion? Read verse 26. Ø OK, let’s apply this to our lives. Many times we say the words but do we follow through with our deeds? Ø Faith is based on what God says (does) not on what we see, but faith is built not on what we say but on what others see. What Does This Mean? ! Where are the needs in the body of Christ that God wants me to respond to? ! Where is the direction and God’s will in my life that I need to respond to? ! Where are the messengers God has put in my life that I need to respond to? ! What have I learned _______________.
I urge you, then, be imitators of me. – 1 Corinthians 4:16 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ – 1 Corinthians 11:1 Join in imitating me – Philippians 3:17 Imitate. Imitate. Imitate. This is Paul's consistent drumbeat for the early followers to grow in their faith and learn to live in the Kingdom. But how does that sit with you? Does Paul want us just to try and be like somebody else? Shouldn't I be focusing on being the best ‘me' I can be? Does this mean I'm not enough as I am? It may feel like a strange idea to us. It might even rub us the wrong way. We're usually taught to stand out, be original, be unique – not follow in someone else's footsteps. So what does this drumbeat of imitation mean? What can we learn from it? And how can we do it? All of that and more on this episode! Does Paul hate women? We tackle those troublesome "women keep silent" and "I do not permit a woman to teach" passages to find the truth. Plus, Heretic of the Week, Elizabeth Schrader, uncovers shocking proof on the suppression of Mary Magdalene.
We can know the individual stories of the Bible but miss the Great Story of God. The story that makes sense of all the smaller stories and give them meaning. Romans 5:12-20 Death in Adam, Life in Christ Overview: The power of Christ’s obedience overcomes Adam’s disobedience. v. 12. “Just as…” a comparison, picked up in v. 18. “so also…” Who sinned? Adam sinned. We inherited his sin nature. We all sin. Paul may have in mind the sin of all people since all were IN Adam, forefather of all. Adam is the head of humanity, the God-appointed representative of man. Regardless, all people are sinners and under a sentence of death – condemnation. Does Paul mean physical or spiritual death? Probably both. vv.13-14 People before the law of Moses didn’t have the law, So how can they be held responsible if they didn’t have the law? The law makes the details of God’s standards known. There is enough revealed in creation for people to know there is a God and to give thanks to him and honor him. Yet they do not acknowledge God’s glory nor authority. vv. 15-17 Adam’s sin brought condemnation (16) and death (17). Christ’s obedience brought justification (16) and righteousness (17). Adam’s act brought sin, death, and misery – powerfully – to mankind. Christ’s act is far more powerful because the grace of God is at work in Christ. The first Adam’s curse is undone by the Greater Adam’s work. vv. 18-19 The whole human race can be divided in two: All people belong to Adam and and are under condemnation. Those who trust in Christ are under grace. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. (John 3:18) Christ’s obedience establishes a reign of life instead of death, a reign of grace instead of condemnation. (15-17, 21) In Christ we have been transferred to a new realm in which grace and life reign (21). Just as Adam sinned and brought sin and death to all who belong to him (12a, 18a, 19a), So also, Christ obeyed and brought righteousness and life to all who belong to him (18b, 19b) Closing: The greatest story is that God created humankind for himself. He created Adam and Eve and put them in a garden paradise, But they rebelled and rejected God. Their sin devastated the world, bringing death and destruction. God could not look on their sin and corruption and he drove them from his presence. But God had a mission for our redemption. He sent into the world another man. This man would be a new Adam, a Greater Adam. God led him to a garden where he chose obedience to God, even when it meant his death. By God’s grace, anyone who believes in Christ are rescued from sin and condemnation. They are transferred into a new realm of grace and life. “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” (1 Cor 15:22) God’s calling: Maybe you’ve been going through all the motions, but realize, you have never put your faith in Christ. “Lord, I have rebelled against you, I need your forgiveness. I believe you sent Jesus to live a life of obedience that I could not live. He died to take away my sin. And he was raised to give me new life. Thank you for forgiving my sin and accepting me into your grace as your son/daughter.” This is the mission of God, to rescue the sons and daughters of Adam. It is the mission of the church to tell of Great story of the Greater Adam. To bring them into faith in Jesus Christ that they may receive his grace.
Does Paul like apple fritters? The answer might just surprise you... News at 11.
Paul Keels joined The Kenny & JT Show Tuesday. And we were going to talk to The Voice of the Buckeyes about Saturday’s Xichigan game. Now we have to discuss it’s cancellation. Why was Paul surprised with the news? How will this affect Ohio State’s future with the Big 10 Championship and/or CFP? If Covid cases continue to rise in college football, could they expand the number of playoff teams? Does Paul have any guesses as to if Ohio State will schedule a new game in or out of the conference? Could the Xichigan game be re-scheduled? Or would that cause issues for national television competition? And what are Paul’s thoughts on the Buckeyes on the field to this point?
We left our story with a very intense plan to protect and transport Paul. Here we get to see how that all plays out. Does Paul arrive safely?

1 THESS. 5:16-18 -- REJOICE. PRAY. GIVE THANKS. Video RecordingShared some of this with Cru students recently. Challenging season we’re in!I want to look at one really short passage in 1 Thessalonians 5. Memorized in college. Helps me to this day!Whole letter is awesome; take 15 minutes to read itToday – just 3 tiny but powerful versesRead 5:16-18 “16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”Right away notice, this isn’t just peripheral advice, take it or leave it. “This is the WILL OF GOD in Christ Jesus for YOU.”Honestly, at first glance, all 3 of those seem almost impossible and ridiculous.Rejoice ALWAYS. Really? Always?Pray without ceasing. Really? Without ceasing?Give thanks in ALL circumstances… Really? All?Almost sounds like it’s written by someone with their head in the clouds who hasn’t gone through much hard stuff. But was that true?We know Paul went through some super intense challenges, but 1 Thessalonians was likely his first letter (that we have in the Bible) – so had he just not faced many challenges yet? Is that why he sounds so cheery? NOPE! Not smooth sailing for him, or the Thessalonians either:1:6 “you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit2:2 “Though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi…”2:14 “For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews…”3:4 “For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.”3:7 “for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith.”Rejoice AlwaysDoes “rejoice” = “be happy”? Like you should be happy all the time and just giggle when terrible things happen?Of course not. Clearly there are times to weep and mourn. What does he mean then? It’s easy to rejoice in good times – natural – don’t need to be told!Family is healthy, bellies are full, house is warm, laughing…What about hard times?Battling physical illness or mental illness…Lose a job; financial struggles; heater breaks; car breaksRelational tension – family, friend, coworker…Feel unsettled about the futureCan you rejoice then?? Does Paul really mean ALWAYS?Paul really means ALWAYS - Romans 5:1-8“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person – though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die – but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This is the Gospel. The Good News of God showing His love toward us in sending his Son to suffer for us – if we put our faith in Him – the Holy Spirit enables us NOT ONLY to have peace with God, and forgiveness of sin, and eternal life…But EVEN to REJOICE in our sufferings. To have joy and hope, regardless of circumstances.Does NOT mean “be happy always”; joy is deeper; We can rejoice even in suffering IF we have the right perspective on God.But even if you know and believe this intellectually, it still seems super hard when you’re facing challenging circumstances. The next two parts have been helpful for me, even very recently.Pray Without CeasingCan’t do anything else? Of course not. Pray throughout your day, every day.Growing up I just prayed before meals, before bed, church.Struck by examples of others praying at “random” times.Driving w/ guy from church on way to workWalking across campus with another studentBegan to shift for me – college – walking, driving, etc.ASK: What is your instinctual reaction to hard circumstances?Where does your mind go?Paul would say, that should trigger prayerPrayer puts the focus on God, not just me/circumstancesAnd HE is the one who can actually help me in my circumstances 4:4-7 – 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.Same pattern as 1 Thess 5 – rejoice, pray, thanksDon’t be anxious – easier said than done right? Key: prayer & thanksLearned to pray on knees – early in marriageAngie (depression), me (tried to fix not just listen & pray)Finally – got on my knees – answers, peace – should’ve prayed 1st!Give Thanks in ALL CircumstancesNot FOR all circumstances… IN all circumstancesNeuroscience & psychology – studies show gratitude actually changes the brain… But science is only observing what God already pointed out through Scripture thousands of years ago. This isn’t a new idea.Basics of not taking things for granted – what I model to my kids – food, water, beds, blankets, pillows…Helps w/ everyday “small” stuff– forgot my mtb shoes; could naturally just be in a bad mood – prayer and giving thanks shifted my attitude and blessed my relationshipsHelps with the big stuffSister Katie died –Grieved. But prayer led to clear perspective; realized I could still be thankful. Led to rejoicingRejoice Always, Pray without Ceasing, Be Thankful in all CircumstancesSome are doing pretty well with this – your role then is to help others. They’re all around you. They’re here today.Don’t just give platitudes “Just trust God. Just pray. Be thankful.”That’s true, but the point isn’t to put on a spiritual Band-Aid.Listen, show care, model thanksgiving, pray for them & with them…One day it will probably be you that needs your eyes lifted. You might be thinking, this is nice Billy… but you don’t know just how bad it’s been for me…Corrie & Betsy Ten Boom –WWII – Hid Jews in Holland (“The Hiding Place”); got bustedSent to Ravensbrück Concentration Camp. Barracks 28.Corrie smuggled a Bible – they’d read w/ other womenOne night – rancid straw beds - fleasBetsy – immediately began praying – surprised CorrieThen remembered that morning’s reading – 1 Thess. 5“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; be thankful in all circumstances”Betsy – let’s start thanking God for everything here!Corrie – like what? (nauseous over the stench)Betsy – We got assigned here together (Oh yah, thank you Lord)That Bible in your hand (Oh yah…)These cramped barracks so more can hear Bible (sarcastic thanks)Betsy “thank you for the fleas, and for…”Corrie – whoa! Too far. Even GOD can’t make me thankful for fleasBetsy “Be thankful in ALL circumstances… not just pleasant circumstances…”As the days went on, security was still super tight everywhere EXCEPT Barracks 28, so slowly they began to have more and more freedom to read the Bible with other women. Eventually they started having two services per day. Never knew why they weren’t checked on by the guards. One day Betsy discovered the reason & told CorrieThe women were having a problem with their work and asked a supervisor to come to the barracks to settle itBut she said, “No way I’m going in there! It’s crawling with fleas!”From The Hiding Place:“My mind rushed back to our first hour in this place. I remembered Betsie’s bowed head, remembered her thanks to God for creatures I could see no use for.”Barracks 28 at Ravensbruck was known as “the crazy place where women have hope.” And hope they had—a living hope.Hope in the midst of darkness.Hope in the midst of persecution.Hope in the midst of unimaginable evils. Many women in Barracks 28 knew and believed that “there is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.”Some of you are in the pit right now. I want you to know it’s not too deep for God’s love. I believe He wants you to know that you can have hope. That’s want that for myself and I want it for all of you:– hope & peace, no matter what we’re going through– and I want it for all our family and friends and neighbors and coworkers who aren’t here…And I believe God wants to use YOU in their lives to help them experience that too through a relationship with Jesus.
Not a week goes by where Paul and Patrick don’t hear about Episode 10 with Mike Rogers (if you haven’t listened to that episode, you might want to before you listen to this one). Any Buzz listener would agree that Mike is the kind of guy that you want to hang out with and chat about life and business. No stranger to automobile love affairs, the road trip was made complete with Dylan making the drive down from Tennessee. After spending time in Mike’s collector car showcase, the Rogers’ dining room table transformed into a recording studio to the benefit of Buzz bingers. Not only did it make for great coffee talk with a repeat guest, but the brains (and emotional stability) behind Killingsworth joined in on our Buzz banter. You’ll even hear Marley, the five-month old labradoodle, make his Buzz debut. What tales didn’t make the Episode 10 tapes? Which stories are worth revisiting with Debbie’s joyful laugh? As the Killingsworth Kouple reminisce on their business and life together, they dish out sage advice on business, life and relationships as well as incredibly funny stories of the early years in unlicensed pest control. At the end of the episode, Paul finally confronts Makenzie, the talent behind Milk Bottle Cookies. Does Paul endorse the infamous cookie, enraging the Mex, or does he cast aside Patrick’s not-so-secret pleasure, winning the Mex’s praise? Patrick’s takeaway : before returning to Charlotte, learn to drive a stick shift.

(Gal.3:1-5; Lk.1:69-75; Lk.11:5-13) “I can't get up to look after your needs.” Does Jesus ever speak these words to us? Does He ever deny our petitions, failing to bring them to His heavenly Father? Do we ever find ourselves empty-handed when we come to Him “in the middle of the night”? Does He ever tire of serving us, of saving us from our sins? Then neither should we turn our back on our brother's needs; neither should we fail to hear his cry and give him food. Brothers and sisters, is it not “you before whose eyes Jesus Christ was displayed upon the cross?” Have you not seen for yourselves the miracle in which we have found “salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all our foes”? And so should you not “serve Him devoutly and through all [your] days be holy in His sight”? If we do this, if we wake in the night to answer the needs of those who call, if we make ourselves available always as does the Lord, then even as we rise from rest Jesus will be with us – in this very action we will know His salvation present in our hearts. For as we lay down our lives, as we die with Him in service of others, the light of His resurrection already becomes present to our eyes. Though the burden is made light by the Lord, this way is not easy – but we should not tire of imitating Him. Does Paul tire of teaching and preaching the faith, of correcting his wayward children who seem so foolishly to stray? Just as the heavenly Father would never give His son “a snake if he asks for a fish, or hand him a scorpion if he asks for an egg,” so the Apostle, too, knows the needs of his flock and works constantly to feed them with the Word of God. Though it weary him no end, yet he ever pours himself out as a libation for their sakes. He is ready for heaven, ready to die and unite with God, yet he gets up in the night, yet he remains present to his children, to provide the food that is due them. And we must be the same as this Apostle. A great assurance the Lord gives us: “Whoever asks, receives; whoever seeks, finds; whoever knocks, is admitted.” If we “have faith in what [we] heard,” we shall indeed find “that God lavishes the Spirit on [us] and works wonders in [our] midst.” For He is faithful and forgets not His promise to us. Yes, “He has raised a horn of saving strength for us in the house of David His servant,” and our Savior is ever present to answer all our needs. But who shall carry out His Word? Who shall know the cross of Christ and its redeeming grace in their own flesh? Who shall serve Him and be thus as His children? Those who rise to look after others' needs, they shall be bone of His bone. ******* O LORD, you give your Spirit to those who have faith in you, to those who call upon your NAME – hear our prayer this day. YHWH, give us this day the Holy Spirit to be with us and guide us to the salvation wrought by your Son, Jesus Christ. Leave us not alone on this plane, hungry and apart from you. Help us to pray, to knock upon your door with faith, knowing it is your good pleasure to answer our needs. Then we shall serve you devoutly all our days and be holy in your sight forever. If your Spirit is with us, LORD, there is nothing else we need, for then you, too, are with us with your only Son. And we will be founded firmly in your Church, safe from all our enemies and nourished by your Bread. We are not able to give good things or do good works on our own, dear LORD. We need your help and guidance; we need the Spirit that comes from you to bless us with your abundance. We shall wither quickly and die without your assistance – come to us this day with your Spirit that we might be your children.

The guys dig into Romans and Galatians this week looking for what Paul says about Jesus's death - what it accomplished and why it was necessary. Paul speaks of Jesus as victor over sin and an obedient pattern for us to follow. He also holds Jesus's death up as something we participate in and the key to our entrance into the new covenant. Does Paul give any indication that he saw Jesus as taking God's wrath that was intended for us?

Romans 11 has been understood in mutually contradictory ways. There is not space here to list them, let alone evaluate them. I shall simply lay out the flow of Paul’s argument as I see it.(1) Does Paul’s argument in Romans 9–10 mean that God has utterly abandoned “his people,” that is, the Israelites? Paul pens a hearty “No way!”—“By no means!” (Rom. 11:1). The first bit of counter-evidence (Rom. 11:1–6) is that Paul himself is a Jew, a Benjamite at that (one of the two tribes that did not break away from the Davidic dynasty after the death of Solomon). In other words, one cannot say that God has cast away the Israelites if Israelites are still being saved. Moreover, it never was the case that all Israelites demonstrated transforming grace. For instance, when Elijah, in a desperate depression, thought he was the only one left, the Lord informed him that he had reserved seven thousand loyal Israelites who had never succumbed to Baal worship (1 Kings 19:4, 10, 18; see also the October 16 meditation). So likewise in Paul’s time and in ours: God has preserved a “remnant” of Jews who have proved faithful to God’s ongoing self-disclosure. From God’s perspective, it is a remnant “chosen by grace,” and therefore not grounded in something as feeble as works (Rom. 11:5–6).(2) But if the nation as a whole, in line with scriptural prophecies, stumbled so badly (Rom. 11:7–10), does this mean there is no hope for them, that they are “beyond recovery? Not at all!” (Rom. 11:11). For in the sweep of God’s redeeming purposes, the substantial hardening of the Jews has been the trigger that has spread the Gospel to the Gentiles—and “if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,” and “if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world,” then “how much greater riches will their fullness bring,” and “what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?” (Rom. 11:12, 15). This sounds very much as if Paul envisages a major swing still future to his own day. In the providence of God, the “rejection” of much of Israel has meant much grace for the Gentiles; the “acceptance” of much of Israel will mean even more grace for the world. Paul envisages a major turning to Jesus on the part of his fellow Jews, a turning that will issue in still greater gospel outreach worldwide.(3) Paul draws some practical lessons for his Gentile Christian readers, using an analogy of a tree with branches broken off and grafted on (Rom. 11:17–25). But the culminating high point of his argument is his acclamation of the unfathomable wisdom and knowledge of God in bringing about this spectacular result (Rom. 11:33–36). Paul and Mike "The Pig" Crum are back at it again this week and they break down the NFC North. Does Paul think Nick Foles is better than Aaron Rodgers?? How good or bad will the Detroit Lions be in 2020? Was trading away Stefon Diggs the right move for Minnesota? Will 2020 be the year Aaron Rodgers remind everyone that he belongs in the "elite" conversation? Can Patrick Mahomes really get any better? As we continue on in our study of Paul's challenging and difficult passages, we come to Romans 1:7 where the apostle refers to his readers as "saints?" How did Paul understand sainthood? Does Paul's understanding of sainthood match that of the Church? In this installment of TMTO, we define sainthood using Scripture and we seek to apply the principles contained therein to our walk with Messiah. Shalom and welcome.

Lethal autonomous weapons represent the novel miniaturization and integration of modern AI and robotics technologies for military use. This emerging technology thus represents a potentially critical inflection point in the development of AI governance. Whether we allow AI to make the decision to take human life and where we draw lines around the acceptable and unacceptable uses of this technology will set precedents and grounds for future international AI collaboration and governance. Such regulation efforts or lack thereof will also shape the kinds of weapons technologies that proliferate in the 21st century. On this episode of the AI Alignment Podcast, Paul Scharre joins us to discuss autonomous weapons, their potential benefits and risks, and the ongoing debate around the regulation of their development and use. Topics discussed in this episode include: -What autonomous weapons are and how they may be used -The debate around acceptable and unacceptable uses of autonomous weapons -Degrees and kinds of ways of integrating human decision making in autonomous weapons -Risks and benefits of autonomous weapons -Whether there is an arms race for autonomous weapons -How autonomous weapons issues may matter for AI alignment and long-term AI safety You can find the page for this podcast here: https://futureoflife.org/2020/03/16/on-lethal-autonomous-weapons-with-paul-scharre/ Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 3:50 Why care about autonomous weapons? 4:31 What are autonomous weapons? 06:47 What does “autonomy” mean? 09:13 Will we see autonomous weapons in civilian contexts? 11:29 How do we draw lines of acceptable and unacceptable uses of autonomous weapons? 24:34 Defining and exploring human “in the loop,” “on the loop,” and “out of loop” 31:14 The possibility of generating international lethal laws of robotics 36:15 Whether autonomous weapons will sanitize war and psychologically distance humans in detrimental ways 44:57 Are persons studying the psychological aspects of autonomous weapons use? 47:05 Risks of the accidental escalation of war and conflict 52:26 Is there an arms race for autonomous weapons? 01:00:10 Further clarifying what autonomous weapons are 01:05:33 Does the successful regulation of autonomous weapons matter for long-term AI alignment considerations? 01:09:25 Does Paul see AI as an existential risk? Paul Saladino is back. The CarnivoreMD, after originally appearing on my show in the episodes... - - ...has just put the finishing touches on his new book , and graciously agreed to record an epic solosode for my listeners in which he delves into all the questions you asked him in the comments section after our first couple episodes together. Prepare for a complete carnivore education, including: -How Paul defines the carnivore diet...5:42 It's a diet that emphasizes and focuses on animal foods The majority of our nutrients comes from animal foods Aware of plant toxicity; minimal (or no) plant matter The best place for vitamins and minerals is animals, with the exception of Vitamin C "Nose to tail" idea Most toxic plant foods: Grains, legumes, nuts, seeds Seeds are highly defended by the plants; high levels of toxicity Most leafy greens are toxic for humans High oxalate foods - almonds, root veggies Moderately toxic: High fructose foods: honey, berries Sweet potatoes, other sweet tubers and roots Least toxic: Avocados, olives, squash A carnivore diet is not simply muscle meat Nose to tail Includes bones, marrow, cartilage Carnivore diet is a "soft" keto diet 1:1 ratio (1 gram of protein per pound of body weight) -How the carnivore diet affects athletic performance...17:25 1. 2. 3. Ensure you check your salt levels if on a low-carb diet (10+ grams per day) -How to get adequate iodine while on the carnivore diet...29:30 (from the ground in Utah) No microplastics 10 g of Redmond has 150 mcg of iodine (equivalent to the RDA) Red meat Egg yolks (100 mcg w/ 4 egg yolks) Don't take too much iodine -Whether the entire global population could be on a carnivore diet...32:45 Is the current agricultural system working? Currently U.S. system is mono crop agriculture (nutrient depletion, no animals to replenish nutrients) Just plants on land is "feed lot feeding" of plants Regenerative agriculture (ecosystem feeding) Grass feeding and finishing is the optimal situation Regenerative agriculture is carbon negative is a good example of regenerative agriculture Multiple species on the same lot reduces parasite presence The current agriculture system is unsustainable -Why the stressor of eating plants is different from a "good" stressor like exercise...42:09 Plant molecules are plant pharmaceuticals Plant and human biochemistry and mutually dependent There is no "package insert" of side effects that comes when eating plants Paul's talked about "collateral damage" in plants Plants ameliorate symptoms, not treating the root cause Glutathione levels in cold water study We don't need sulforaphane to get adequate glutathione If we live a "radical lifestyle" of environmental hormetics, we don't need the plant molecules Studies referenced: 4. -How the carnivore diet activates pathways in our bodies...54:50 Environmental hormetics: heat, cold, exercise, etc. Nrf2 pathway is affected positively by plant intake Sirtuin pathways activated by resveratrol Doses in a nose to tail diet are adequate Studies referenced: 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. -Do PH levels reach acidic levels on the carnivore diet?...1:13:36 Yes, if it is not constructed properly Acid load is balanced on: protein and minerals If we get enough minerals, it will balance the protein acidity Many on the carnivore diet don't get enough calcium Many minerals that are only present in bones Bone broth is the easiest way to do this (just add vinegar) Studies referenced: 14. 15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. -IGF and mTOR when it comes to the carnivore diet...1:26:32 The Switch by James Clement No ketones in the blood is not a good thing Depleted liver glycogen produces ketones High carb diet will activate mTOR Balance w/ intermittent or complete fasting Gain muscle on a carnivore diet by eating more frequently: 4 oz. of meat 3-4 times a day Paul's podcast w/ -Is the carnivore diet a concern for Alzheimers?...1:30:57 APO e4 is a variant of apolipoprotein E It is the most ancestral isoform "It was eating meat that made us human" Paul's podcast w/ APO e4 is only an issue if we're insulin resistant The vast majority of Americans are insulin resistant It can be beneficial in populations that are not insulin resistant Remain in the elite of the population (insulin sensitive) Studies referenced: 21. 22. 23. 24. 25. 26. 27. 28. -What about doing a carnivore diet w/ FTO mutations and are an over methylator?...1:42:28 Saturated fats come from mislabeled trans fats or junk food People who eat animal products eat more healthy saturated fats Epidemiology can only produce hypotheses Paul's typical daily diet: 16 oz. grass fed organic steak 85 g of suet mixed w/ homemade bone broth 4-5 egg yolks w/ a generous serving of salt For dinner: all of the above, plus liver, brain, heart, suet w/ bone broth and salt There are no over or under methylators Get riboflavin from organ meats and heart (need 2-3 mg per day) -What do Paul's lab results look like?...1:50:00 No correlation between HDL when LDL rises and cardiovascular disease The higher the LDL, the longer we live (provided we're insulin sensitive) -Rapid fire questions...1:53:54 How long should you do the carnivore diet before you know of its efficacy? No "cheat days" - don't reward yourself w/ bad food Carnivore diet benefits is from an immunological perspective Minimum 60 day reset is advocated in the book Are chicken and eggs okay on the carnivore diet? Info that says animal products are low in Vitamin K count only Vitamin K1; they are high in Vitamin K2 Eggs are fine; Paul prefers the yolks only What parts of the animal should you not eat? The adrenals Does Paul take supplements? None at the moment Would a woman need time to adapt to the carnivore diet? Is the carnivore diet advisable for pregnancy, breast feeding or children? -Phospholipid forms of DHA w/ the carnivore diet...2:01:48 We get phospholipids from our food Paul is not a fan of omega 3 supplementation (they're highly oxidized) -Do cruciferous vegetables cause hypothyroidism?...2:05:23 29. 30. 31. 32. 33. 34. -And much more!
