Send us a textWhat if misguided economic policies and entrenched ideologies are pushing a major American city to the brink? Join us as we unravel the complexities of Portland's precarious state, with Mayor Keith Wilson—a "spineless nice guy"—struggling against union pressures and DEI policies that leave city governance paralyzed. Drawing insights from my upcoming book, we explore the stark realities faced by first-term politicians in cities similar to Portland, where maintaining voter approval often conflicts with making necessary but unpopular decisions.Multnomah County's tax rates soar as public services lag, painting a picture of disparity and inefficiency. We tackle the thorny issues of rising crime among homeless communities and troubling welfare practices, while questioning Portland's public spending priorities, like preschool funding and housing for immigrants. Plus, we dive into recent controversies—from Whoopi Goldberg's comments on SpaceX funding to the portrayal of President Zelensky in the media—and navigate the complex landscape of gender identity within the LGBTQ community, challenging mainstream narratives on mental health and societal expectations. From economic woes to unsettling public incidents, Portland's challenges are a cautionary tale for cities across the nation. The episode confronts Portland's net population loss, urban decay, and struggles to attract private sector investment amid a backdrop of crime and homelessness. We also dissect the enduring nature of government bureaucracies and the broader implications of federal contracts, with thought-provoking commentary on Whoopi Goldberg's stance on SpaceX and the ongoing debate over transgender participation in sports. Join us for a candid exploration of these pressing societal issues, topped off with a heartfelt reflection on America's future.

We have a news-heavy Spotlight for you this week, with stories from athletics, cycling and Rugby League to discuss. Shelby Houlihan's return from a doping ban has Gareth wondering about second-chances and forgiveness for dopers? Cycling's authorities met at the Cyclocross World Champs in Lievin and agreed to regulate the use of carbon monoxide and to prevent its misuse for performance enhancement. We talk about that decision and its details, and how it's a positive step, despite some recognized limitations. Cycling safety is also under the spotlight, with the tragic deaths of cyclists around the world a reminder of the perils of the sport, particularly during training. Finally, Rugby League is considering a change to how players are sent off for high tackles, with a proposal to give yellow cards only when the player on the receiving end of the illegal tackle fails an off-field test indicating possible concussion. Proposed as a means to "get more consistency", Ross explains that if anything, it introduces a (for now) random, unpredictable outcome variable in the decision that will compromise consistency, and may detract from player welfare and behaviour change initiatives. But first, we kick off the show with our Discourse-first birthday announcement, a thanks to all our fabulous followers, and then revisit last week's Spotlight on carbohydrate requirements to explain why elites need to fuel at rates the rest of us needn't aspire to emulate.Join DiscourseIf you fancy a bit of the coaching, sports science and sports news conversations with our amazing members, consider a small donation to become a Patron of the site, and get access to our Discourse community, where you can join like-minded fans and sports enthusiasts to keep the conversation going.Show notesThe paper Ross alluded on the show, that gives an example of relative carb and fat use during exerciseArticle on the proposal to give yellow cards only when the ball carrier fails the head injury assessment in Rugby League Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Hey Careblazers!
Henry VIII is typically remembered as he was at the end of his life - weighing in at a colossal 28 stone, with ulcerated legs, failing eyesight and an explosive temper. But, prior to the jousting accident he suffered 24th January, 1536, history had recorded him as merry, affable and physically attractive. Jousting was his favourite sport, but after being knocked off his horse and falling unconscious for two hours, he appears to have become increasingly erratic, irritable and cruel - not least to his wife Anne Boleyn and her four famous successors. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly suggest why the identity of Henry's jousting opponent was not recorded; explain why the Vatican were really quite excited by Henry's head injury; and ask whether the King's demeanour really did change significantly, or whether he was ALWAYS a bit of a jerk… Further Reading: • ‘The jousting accident that turned Henry VIII into a tyrant' (The Independent, 2009): https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/the-jousting-accident-that-turned-henry-viii-into-a-tyrant-1670421.html • ‘Henry VIII: ‘brain injury caused by jousting to blame for erratic behaviour and possible impotence'' (HistoryExtra, 2016): https://www.historyextra.com/period/tudor/henry-viii-brain-injury-caused-by-jousting-to-blame-for-erratic-behaviour-and-possible-impotence/ • ‘Full Metal Jousting - The Biggest Hits' (The History Channel, 2012): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWVZgp-eQG8 Love the show? Last week, the press focused on what the press repeatedly characterized as an “ugly” fight between American college football players that broke out after the University of Michigan beat The Ohio State. But another story received less attention. Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20 year old from Southern California was playing his first season as a linebacker with Alabama A&M University when he sustained a head injury during the annual Magic City Classic against in-state rivals Alabama State University on Oct. 26. A month later, Burnett died. Today's Postscript features two prominent scholars of sports raising questions about the hypocrisy of blaming players for a fight yet downplaying the death caused by playing by the rules. This remarkable conversation includes an unpacking of the “consent” to physical, psychological, and economic impacts, insight into the Foucauldian elements of discipline, punishment, and surveillance, and concrete reform suggestions for all people who watch football and/or work at universities. This nuanced conversation is for those who love or loathe football as a college sport. In this episode, made to mark Human Rights Day 2024, Andy and his guests explore the issue of brain injury and how social workers can best support people with a brain injury to ensure their rights are upheld. Social workers who work with individuals affected by brain injury need to have a clear understanding of the condition in order to provide effective support. This includes recognising the medical, psychological, social, and legal implications of brain injury, as well as the ways in which it can impact daily life.Joining Andy to discuss social work and brain injury are Dr Caroline Bald, Kate Mellor and Steph Grant.Caroline is Lecturer in Social Work at the University of Essex and is Research Fellow on the Heads Together project. Heads Together is National Institute for Health and Care Research funded collaboration across universities in the UK, exploring brain injury social work education. Along with Caroline, Kate is also a social worker. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we finally arrive at the dramatic climax of Edgar Cayce's life where his lifelong dream of building a hospital is finally realized along with its many successes, failures and ultimate demise. It was here and during the twilight of Edgar's life that the many psychic readings he performed began to reveal the details about the rise and fall of The Lost City of Atlantis. Shockingly, a number of his descriptions align well with esoteric tradition and some archeological discoveries in our own research via Heka Astra. Hugh Lynn compares Hopi legend to the information given by his father in trance while we discover links to Kabbalistic mysticism. Before the end of the free show we even get to explore a number of interesting health tips and tricks provided by the Source over the years of Cayce's work. In the extended show we continue our discussion about the bigger themes we've recently uncovered about the Age of Aquarius and explore how Edgar Cayce's prophecies of the future lined up with events that did actually happen and still might in the future, including a controversial one about Russia. In the end we discuss Edgar Cayce's twilight years, the organization dedicated to work and the powerful moments Edgar would manifest during his last months on earth. We hope you have enjoyed this series on Edgar Cayce and will come back next week where we plan to have Tim Hacker back to collaborate with us on another, yet very different, terrifying and well documented case of the supernatural.Thank you and enjoy the show! In this week's episode we continue with PART 5 of Edgar Cayce's life when things begin to take a dramatic shift toward ideas and philosophies we would classify as either “occult” or “New Age” today. We discuss how Cayce built his “spook room” for maximum psychic potential, how soul-mate's are said to work, the role astrology plays in our lives, the importance of shadow-work, group reincarnation and the kitschy subject of soul-contracts. In the full-length episode we dive into the extensive work done to remotely view the life and times of Jesus Christ which, tantalizingly, lines up with what we have studied from various sources. We also discuss the art of dream interpretation which became prominent as the Cayce family finally settled down in Virginia Beach where Edgar Cayce would settle down and begin the final phase of his life. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a degenerative brain disease found in those who have had repetitive brain trauma, which cannot be diagnosed accurately until one's brain is examined after death. Looking back over the histories of deceased athletes, researchers have discovered that there are cases of CTE in athletes who never experienced a concussion. A connection has now been made between higher odds of developing CTE as a result of the number and strength of non-concussive head impacts experienced over one's lifetime, also known as subclinical traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which typically show no immediate signs or symptoms. It's not a single injury that causes the disease, but instead accumulation of microtrauma from thousands of hits over years. Parents, many of these unseen TBI's take place in youth sports where the brain is developing and most vulnerable. Parents, you are called to steward the God-given safety of your kids bodies and brains!

Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we continue onward to part 4 of the life and times of Edgar Cayce, one of the world's most well known psychics and an unwitting messenger of the New Age! In this colorful section of Edgar Cayce's life, the Magnificent Medium of Kentucky tries his hand in the oil business, using his clairvoyance to strike black gold in the desolate hills of Northern Texas. Along the way Edgar would experiment with an Ouija board with spectacular results, write a script for a Hollywood movie in trance and even did top-secret work with the U.S. Government. In the extended show Cayce begins doing mediumship full time and encounters none other than Harry Houdini and other prominent debunkers who failed to expose him. At his lowest point, desperate for cash Cayce will be tempted by the elite to sell his soul and begins doing work for a wealthy spiritualist who began a detailed dialogue with Cayce during trance about the occult truths of our world and would initiate Edgar's journey on his path of becoming The Sleeping Prophet. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we continue our occult biography of the New Ages' most beloved and often imitated prophet, Edgar Cayce. When we last left off, Cayce had turned his back on farming and went to seek a name for himself in the city where he quickly became known as the Sunday school teacher and bookstore clerk with the encyclopedic memory. In the first half of the show we discuss Edgar's rise to popularity, his first kiss and the strange, even frightening burst of high-strangeness that were known to occur around Edgar when emotions ran high. By the end of the free show we discuss how Edgar came to discover his profound psychic abilities during hypnotism and how they learned to direct said abilities toward the healing of the human body. In the extended show we learn how Edgar's trance readings were used on others, how they stood up to intense scrutiny and the mind-boggling limits of such power which included telepathy, mind control, levitation, precognition and strangest of all, a somewhat alien personality - each one we consider from an occult perspective. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! In this week's episode we gaze into the life of one of the world's most renowned and talented mediums, the great Edgar Cayce. With thousands of documented reports, witnesses and return clients, Edgar Cayce made a name for himself as a healer who, despite being a simple country boy could merely put himself into a deep sleep, almost as if in a coma and begin uttering the words of a mysterious voice which seemed to know the secrets of medicine, the human body and the universe, dispensing its wisdom to all who would call upon it. In many ways, Edgar Cayce did for psychism what Nikola Tesla did for electricity and his legacy still endures today with a number of his highly accurate predictions still coming to pass. In this episode we discuss his early life as a boy in rural Kentucky and how from an occult perspective he may have attained his gifts. In the extended show we discuss Cayce's adolescent years as a Bible lover, his experiences with women, getting shot outside a dance hall and the religious experience which pushed Casey from the simple life of a farmer out into the world where he would quickly become a sensation. In this episode, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Michael Lewis, renowned expert in brain health and traumatic brain injury (TBI), and author of the groundbreaking book, When Brains Collide. Dr. Lewis is the founder of the Brain Health Education and Research Institute and BrainCARE. With a military background and extensive experience in traumatic brain injuries, Dr. Lewis has dedicated his career to exploring how omega-3 fish oils can play a vital role in preventing and recovering from concussions, TBI, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases. Key Discussion Points 1. The Role of Omega-3 Fish Oils in Brain Health Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), the primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, are crucial for maintaining brain structure and function. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective, making them vital in protecting the brain from injury and supporting recovery. 2. High-Dose Omega-3 Fish Oil for Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Dr. Lewis emphasizes how high-dose fish oil can help mitigate damage following a concussion or TBI. Dosing Protocols: In acute brain injury cases, Dr. Lewis recommends significantly higher doses of fish oil (e.g., up to 3-9 grams of combined DHA and EPA per day) to reduce inflammation, promote healing, and restore brain cell membrane integrity. Case studies demonstrate remarkable improvements in TBI patients, including quicker recovery times, reduced brain fog, and restored cognitive function. 3. Fish Oils for Neurodegeneration and Stroke Prevention Regular intake of omega-3s is shown to be effective in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Omega-3s help prevent stroke by reducing blood clot formation, improving vascular health, and lowering inflammation in brain tissues. Dr. Lewis advocates for omega-3s as part of a preventive strategy, particularly for aging individuals at higher risk of neurodegenerative conditions. 4. Using Omega-3s as Preventive Medicine Consistent omega-3 supplementation is not just for recovery—it's crucial for maintaining optimal brain health. Athletes, military personnel, and individuals at risk for head trauma should use omega-3s proactively to strengthen their brain's resilience to injury. Preventative Dosing: Dr. Lewis suggests a daily intake of at least 2-3 grams of DHA and EPA combined for ongoing brain health and injury prevention. 5. How to Choose a High-Quality Fish Oil Dr. Lewis explains the criteria for identifying a high-quality fish oil supplement: Purity: Free from contaminants like heavy metals and toxins. Potency: Look for a high concentration of DHA and EPA. Stability: Avoid fish oils that oxidize easily, as rancid oils can be harmful. Sourcing: Prefer fish oils sourced from wild-caught, sustainably harvested fish. Importance of third-party testing to ensure the product is safe and effective. 6. Personal Stories and Case Studies Dr. Lewis shares inspiring stories of patients and athletes who have successfully used omega-3 therapy to recover from brain injuries. Examples include a football player who recovered from multiple concussions and a stroke survivor who regained cognitive function with high-dose omega-3 supplementation. 7. How to Use Omega-3s After Brain Injury Immediate supplementation following a brain injury can make a significant difference in recovery outcomes. The sooner omega-3s are introduced post-injury, the better. Dr. Lewis provides insight into the timing and administration of omega-3 supplements during the acute phase of brain injury treatment.
