In this episode of Lessons I Learned in Law, Scott Brown speaks to Adam Woodhall, founder and CEO of Lawyers for Net Zero - a non-profit that supports GCs and their teams to utilise their position as a corporate leader to enable effective engagement with climate and ESG issues.Adam shares the three lessons he has learned in law including:· General Counsel are the most influential individuals in the legal sector. They interface with many colleagues in different roles across the organisation, and choose which law firms to work with. · General Counsels have gone way beyond the ‘Department of No'! · This is not theoretical - GCs are working on ESG and advocating for change in their organisations right now! If you, as a GC, are thinking of working in this field then know there are many others similar to you who are already making it happen. Adam reveals how many GCs are using ESG initiatives as a way of exercising their leadership. GCs often sit on the board of organisations or advise very senior management and are doing so with regards to issues on sustainability. Adam has worked with over 100 in-house lawyers via Lawyers for Net Zero's ‘Leaders Programme', including the global GCs from Rolls Royce, WPP, BUPA, Centrica, National Grid and Specsavers. Hear all about the programme which focusses on supporting GCs to generate action via their role through peer-to-peer networking and training. You can find out more about the programme here. The current form of capitalism is “almost inevitably going to have to change”. That’s the verdict from Adam Woodhall, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, who spoke to ELN during the climate group’s two-week protest at the start of October. He said “people find it easier to see the end of civilisation than they do to see the end of capitalism” and stressed he wanted to avoid a “Mad Max world”. Mr Woodhall told ELN “things can change very rapidly” and noted that even if this transition was uncomfortable, it is necessary to envisage a new future that takes less of a toll on the natural environment. He said: “The current form of capitalism is almost inevitably going to have to change, it’ll either collapse because we get exceptional climate destruction or we change it.” Speaking for the activist group, he suggested that as humanity is already so far along the curve of climate change, disruptive action is now needed to draw attention to the ecological emergency as “everything else has failed to create the level of change that is required”. Adam Woodhall will be speaking at Energy Live EXPO 2019, alongside Kwasi Kwarteng MP, Minister of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Kirsty Gogan, Co-Founder and Global Director of Energy for Humanity, Mike Hughes, Zone President of Schneider Electric and Steve Holliday, former CEO of National Grid and new President of the Energy Institute.
Dr David Greenfield asks Adam Woodhall, spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion and Cat Fletcher, head of media at Freegle to explain how sharing will deliver a less resource-greedy world. Fresh from April's Extinction Rebellion protests in London, and with plenty of stories from the heart of the activity, Adam Woodhall told the CLGdotTV audience that sharing thinking about use of resources via protests sets the stage for sort of practical action that can be facilitated by organisations like Freegle. Freegle was founded in 2009 and aims to increase reuse and reduce landfill by offering a free online service where people can give away and ask for things that would otherwise be thrown away. Cat Fletcher said that the impact of Extinction Rebellion for the organisation and its 1000+ volunteers was immediate and positive. She stressed that the benefits of sharing are not just about the environment either. There is a human connection made whenever something is passed from one person to another, to become part of a different life. As Reuse Manager at Brighton and Hove City Council, Cat's day job is equally concerned with saving stuff the council doesn't need any more for further use - in unbelievable quantities – which, as she explains is a far better outcome than recycling, where products have to be taken apart (more use of resources) before anything can be done with them.
