The railway industry stands at a pivotal moment, grappling with the need to adapt its workforce strategies to meet the challenges of the future. In our latest podcast episode, we hear from Brad Smith, the Operations Manager for Wessex Route at Network Rail. As we delve into the complexities of maintaining a 24/7 operational team, Brad highlights the evolving expectations of employees, particularly in light of generational shifts. With Gen Z projected to comprise over 30% of the global workforce by 2030, it is crucial for the railway to understand that this new generation seeks more than just a paycheque; they desire purpose, flexibility, and opportunities for personal growth. One of the key takeaways from the discussion is the importance of structuring the workforce effectively to avoid burnout and ensure operational continuity. Brad emphasises that the railway cannot afford to be overstaffed or understaffed. Instead, a balanced approach is necessary to maintain efficiency and keep the railway running smoothly. This involves leveraging technology, such as predictive analytics and AI-driven scheduling, to optimise staffing levels and enhance productivity. Moreover, the conversation touches on the imperative of fostering a diverse and inclusive workforce. Brad points out that diversity isn't merely a buzzword; it is a business necessity that can lead to improved decision-making and operational effectiveness. Inclusive teams are not only more engaged but also demonstrate lower turnover rates, which is vital for an industry that never sleeps. As we navigate through the challenges of an ageing workforce and skills gaps, the episode underscores the significance of investing in training and development. Apprenticeships and structured career pathways are essential for building internal capabilities and nurturing future leaders from within the organisation. In conclusion, the railway industry must rethink its people strategy to thrive in an era of rapid change. By embracing new working practices, investing in talent development, and committing to diversity and inclusion, we can ensure that the railway is not only sustainable but also future-proof for generations to come. Listen to the episode for a deeper dive into these critical topics and learn how the railway can adapt and thrive in the face of challenges. Hosted on Acast. “Government has made a BIG mistake” Rail Partners CEO Andy Bagnall interview

Rail Partners is a trade body that was set up to promote and focus on the interests of the private sector train operators, both passenger and freight, on the railway. But it has become a casualty of the Labour government's approach to railways and the increasing drive towards nationalisation of operators. Rail Partners announced recently that from March 2025 they will wind up their operations. They have been quite fierce critics of the approach being adopted that instead of combining the best of both worlds, public and private, seems rather ideologically wedded to one approach - a state-owned railway. Richard speaks to CEO Andy Bagnall in this revealing interview, and it's fair to say that whilst he was measured and courteous, he did not hold back. A brand new railway is being built in Wales. They have the land. They have the planning permission. Some of the ballast is even laid. All they need is the rest of the money to finish it and they can reconnect a railway with its town. The Bala Lake Railway (home of the beautiful Quarry Hunslets) on the banks of the glorious Bala Lake in Snowdonia is raising the money to take the railway from its current terminus on the outskirts of Bala, where there are no facilities to a brand new station in the heart of town. Two second-half goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traore sealed Fulham's three points against Leicester who have had seven losses out of eight, a pretty dismal showing. A toxic atmosphere at the King Power suggested that Van Nistelrooy's lifetime with the Foxes might be short. Leicester's poor performance does not take away from the comfortable, stylish display from Marco Silva's Fulham side. Sander Berge returned to the starting line-up as George, with Avais, George Rossiter and Yasmin, reflect on what was a stellar performance from him in the midfield. A calm and assured presence consistently broke up any essence of Leicester threat and helped Fulham fans' shoulders relax a little more. We react to ESR's redeeming diving header that put Fulham in front just after half-time which will hopefully boost his confidence going forward to an exciting Manchester United fixture. Rossiter and Avais tell the tales of what was an eventful away day, including a Network Rail heist and a masterclass in drumming. We answer some of your listener questions in part two, having some theoretical fun with our striker position.

We're five years into a hedge planting trial with Network Rail at Hadley Wood in North London...and five years in, the hedges planted by the volunteers are four meters tall and have 96% survival rate, whereas those planted by the contractors are two meters tall - that's half - and a 64% survival rate," all of which is a boon to the well-documented benefits of trees - pollution mitigation, urban cooling, flood mitigation, well-being uplift and so on. A full report on the findings is to be produced in due course. But climate change and changes to previously dependable seasonal patterns has led her to wonder whether National Tree Week (which encourages people to plant trees in their communities), shoudl be made later."The warmer autumns means the trees become dormant later, the early spring brings them back to life sooner."As concern grows over the UK's ability to meet Government tree planting targets, Lom says: "They didn't meet their targets, but the good news is that the nation did plant 40% more trees last season than they did the season before. And the aim is that will escalate year on year on year, but it takes time and everyone has to play their part. I know when I've spoken to nursery, they've said, we need time to be able to generate the stock."As local authorities wrestle with extreme pressure on council budgets Lom insists that having a tree strategy should be a priority:On plans for 2024 Lom says the schools programme will continue, tree survival studies and work with DEFRA looking at establishing a methodology for tree survival and tree establishment will all figure.Tree Council is also collaborating with Oxford University on a mistletoe mapping project, a keystone species with complex interactions with trees. Okay, a cheeky local one this week, amongst some news... Haxby station is looking increasingly likely to appear in the next few years, so let's talk about if it is in the right place, what the wider railway network around York ought to look like, some of the timetable challenges of achieving that, and why it is being designed to look so awful again when the HUB station designs are now formally part of Network Rail's design guidelines. We roll out the red carpet for the return of the freedom fighter and football legend Matt Le Tissier to give his thoughts on some of the headlines and talking points from the news, social media and from across the web. Plenty for Matt and Peter to get their teeth stuck into including... - How many more before you investigate? 3 footballers collapse on live TV in one week. - Vile Irish PM Leo Varadkar jumps off the sinking Irish coalition ship. - Amish Officially Declared ‘World's Healthiest Children' After Rejecting Big Pharma Vaccines. - Fury as Nike adds a ultra-woke 'Playful Update' and changes colours of the on St George's cross England shirts. - Chair of Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority gets quizzed on why she agrees her force is ‘institutionally racist'. - "We need to protect their innocence and childhood" British MP speaks sense on sex education. - Network Rail removes Islamic message on King's Cross display boards after fierce criticism. - Clown World News: Sunbathing for just one day ‘increases your risk of killer heart disease and wrecks your immune system. Matt Le Tissier is a bona fide football legend, often described as one of the most naturally talented players of his time, the man that south coast residents call ‘Le God' and one of the most famous soccer stars of the 1990's. Matt joined Southampton FC on the YTS scheme in 1985, signed professional forms with them the following year at 16 years of age and for the next 16 years he put loyalty above riches and remained at the club. A hero to his fans for his creativity, he was the first midfielder to score 100 goals in the Premier League and Matt's penalty taking abilities were renowned, converting 47 out of 48 from the spot. Then for 15 years he was on our TV screens every week on Sky Sports giving his commentary on the Premier League football matches. This all came to a screeching halt when he tweeted his thoughts on the Ukraine/Russia conflict, refused to wear a badge on-air of an organisation he had no interest in being associated with and also retweeting a post that questioned the government line on COVID. These actions were apparently outside the accepted new-speak and for these crimes he was sacked. Connect with 'Le God'...
