Two second rule: System1 and JCDecaux effectiveness research shows 70% of Out-of-Home ads fail, the brands nailing it – and seven easy fixes

A world first creative benchmarking study from System1 and JCDecaux has run stacks of Australian Out-of-Home ads through its globally-renowned effectiveness scoring system and drawn a stark conclusion: 70 per cent of outdoor ads fail to move the needle. Andrew Tindall, SVP – Global Partnerships at System1, goes even further: “No-one understands how Out-of-Home works,” he says, particularly the critical need to land the brand within two seconds. At face value, not a wholly positive headline for the medium. But System1 has come up with a formula that, its data strongly suggests, massively improves effectiveness. It’s not rocket science. For example, just placing your logo at the top of an Out-of-Home ad increases brand recognition four times versus a logo parked at the bottom. Likewise be consistent – entertaining and never boring – and keep messaging simple and positive to get much higher brand lift, and ultimately, sales. On that front, Tindall says there is a false divide between brand and performance campaigns: The long, i.e. brand, always drives the short, i.e. performance. The research with JCDecaux, “allows us to add a lot more nuance to what is a very non-nuanced industry” and underlines why brand and demand “need to be brought back a little bit closer together”. Brands nailing Out-of-Home effectiveness locally include Compare the Market with its Meerkats, Uber Eats with the Wiggles and Simon Cowell, Specsavers and Ocean Spray, per Tindall. Sephora’s latest campaign, he says, is one of the highest scoring Out-of-Home ads System1 has ever tested. The bottom line? “The single standout thing for me in this research is it confirms that creative is the make and break of how effective a campaign can be.” Tindall, plus JCDecaux’s Cris Smart and Scott Jenkins, unpack the research’s key findings – and the seven simple steps to massively boost Out-of-Home effectiveness.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

€1.5 million shop local vouchers upgraded to modern gift card in Donegal Town

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

A new gift card has gone live in Donegal Town as part of efforts to retain spend in Donegal and encourage local spending. Backed by Donegal Town Business Focus Group, the new Donegal Town Gift Card is available as a physical gift card or an e-card that can be added to digital wallets. Donegal Town introduced their paper Shop Local Vouchers in 2016, with over €1.5 million in sales to date. Gareth Britton is chairperson of Donegal Town Business Focus Group, and owner of All Sports and said the time was right for the town to introduce a high-tech gift card: "All Sports was founded in 1997 and like most of the businesses who are part of the Donegal Town Business Focus Group, it is family run. The idea behind the Shop Local Vouchers was to help keep money local in challenging economic times and encourage a buy and spend local mind-set. The best option initially was paper but it's time to move on to a high tech physical and digital gift card. "The main benefit of the new Donegal Town Gift Card is that it's user friendly. The gift card format is one people are familiar with, and unlike the paper vouchers that could only be used in one business, the gift card can be used in multiple businesses, across multiple transactions. "As we approach the peak season for gift card sales, having our own gift card is a huge advantage enabling both consumer and corporate sales. Organisations can buy the Donegal Town Gift Card for their staff with the knowledge that it can be spent with so many businesses in Donegal Town. "It's eligible for the Small Benefit Exemption, meaning organisations can reward their staff, tax free, up to €1,000 per employee, which goes up to €1,500 in January." Alongside retail and hospitality, a range of service based businesses accept the Donegal Town Gift Card like locally owned business, Specsavers. Eddie Dolan is the co-owner of Specsavers and said: "Specsavers has been open for 8 years in Donegal. We're part of the wider Specsavers brand, offering the value, service and quality eye care the brand is known for but delivered in a local way with a warm Donegal welcome. I think the progression of the vouchers to the new Donegal Town Gift Card is a fantastic and a great move for our local businesses. A high-tech gift card is what customers expect nowadays. "It makes a more thoughtful, personal gift. With over 80 businesses participating, recipients of the card have flexibility to spend it on their eyes and ears, groceries, fuel or anything else they want or need in Donegal Town, blending practical uses with treats. "It's also so much easier for businesses to accept the new gift card as payment, just like any other card payment. Plus, there's no commission for businesses to accept the Donegal Town Gift Card, unlike the national gift cards which take a big commission. We'll be giving the Donegal Town Gift Card to our staff this Christmas using the Small Benefit Exemption because it ensures the full benefit reaches the employee, and locks our investment in Donegal Town." The Donegal Town Gift Card is part of the multi award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland in Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Letterkenny, Sligo and Waterford. Over €7 million Town & City Gift Cards were sold in Ireland in 2023, with around 80% of sales to organisations for staff rewards and incentives. Colin Munro is the managing director of Miconex and said: "It has been fantastic to work alongside Donegal Town to successfully onboard businesses from their previous paper voucher scheme to their new gift card. In our 2024 research, shop local sentiment was extremely high with consumers, employees and organisations all expressing a desire to support local businesses and their community. With its inherent support for local and unbeatable local choice, the Donegal Town Gift Card is the gift card that people want to receive." See more stories here. If you saw Jeremy Allen White's Calvin Klein ad, count yourself lucky. It was shared without ALT text, so blind and partially sighted people couldn't join the fun. That was until RNIB schooled us all. Behind every sassy, creative, and inventive post from the Royal National Institute of Blind People is an important message: People with sight loss exist. Social media content manager and previous copywriter for Specsavers' agency, Helen Dutson, and RNIB's social media officer Holly Tuke, who's registered blind are on a mission to show social media that accessible content is achievable, necessary, and rich ground for creativity. In this episode we got a lesson in what scrolling through social is like for someone with sight loss, how to make truly accessible content, who's doing it well, and how platforms can improve their features. Elliot and Dominic, two entrepreneurial brothers, have taken the business world by storm over the last few years. Together they have built a group of successful agencies across the UK and the US through a combination of growth and strategic acquisitions. The agencies operate under Chapman Capital and include a B2B growth agency that has worked with some of the world's largest tech brands, a podcast booking agency that has booked guests in over 2,200 podcast episodes with 700+ hosts, a TV ad agency in London, and a full-service marketing agency. Elliot has been running businesses since the age of 20. He helped set up a local soccer school in Bournemouth and managed to grow it into the number 1 regional coaching program. He was later headhunted by the biggest amateur soccer club in the US and appointed Director of Coaching in Boston. Elliot also ran the family business, an IT management consultancy, where he helped take it from a £2.5m to a £5m+ business. Since 2019, Elliot has been involved in Chapman Capital and various other ventures. Dominic's entrepreneurial journey began when he became head of innovation at Specsavers at the age of 19. He built one of the healthcare apps still used in stores today before starting his first two businesses, a design agency, and a clothing brand. Dominic launched Stemx, a tech platform in the recruitment space, and raised £400k from angel investors. The platform ran over 10,000 video interviews in 10 countries. Since 2019, Dominic has been involved in Chapman Capital, Social Chaps, Speak on Podcasts, FKC London, Low & Behold, and Agencyfinance.io. Elliot and Dominic have combined their expertise and experiences to build a thriving business empire. They continue acquiring more agencies that service clients globally and will announce their new ventures over the coming months.
