The CREED Trilogy is the perfect companion the the ROCKY franchise, following the son of Apollo Creed young Adonis Johnson on his journey to carve his own path and create his own legacy. Michael B. We're getting violent this week as we take a look at the Top 5 Punches. Fans of punch bowls, punch cards, punch clocks and pneumatic punch presses should probably steer well clear as we almost exclusively discuss the fisting kind. When MGM approached Ryan Coogler to write and direct an expansion to the Rocky universe it wasn't a foregone conclusion that it would be a hit even though both he and star Michael B. Jordan have since gone on to huge commercial success in the BLACK PANTHER franchise. CREED (2015) tells the story of Adonis Johnson, who persuades former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to mentor and train him as he takes on 'Pretty' Ricky Conlan (Tony Bellew) in a bid to establish his own legacy distinct from his fathers. The Rocky franchise has always enjoyed quiet characters moments and drama as much as it has sensational action and emotional crescendos and CREED is no different, with a modern, genuine feeling love story between Tessa Thompson's Bianca and the titulastic boxer as well as a heart-breaking emotional arc for Stallone who gives a career highlight performance. Sensational action sequences update the series' proclivity for ridiculous spectacle to something almost verité. THE ADVENTURES OF ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE is Amazon Prime's 2018 reboot of the 1960's series and sees a squirrel and an idiot moose fighting crime. In the tiny European country of Pottsylvania, an island in the black sea held under a military dictatorship controlled by evil scientists and evil chickens, Fearless Leader sets out to acquire Bullwinkle J. Moose's secret recipe for his chemical weapons grade pie. Only mildly diverting. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're giving it the “ole one-two” with a match- up between 1976's classic, Oscar winning underdog boxer sensation Rocky directed by John G. Avildsen and starring Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers and Burgess Meredith and its 2015 spin-off reboot, Creed, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Tony Bellew and Graham McTavish. Joining me today are Alex Robertson, no stranger to pugilism he, and my sister Roseanne. Don't be fooled by her English lit degree and fancy pants talk, she's a sucker for an old fashioned, meat and potatoes, rag-tag-group-of- misfits come-from-behind, sports epic. Before the round one bell, the synopses: Rocky tells the story of Rocky Balboa, an amiable but down-on-his-luck and seemingly dim-witted Philadelphia club fighter who gets the chance of a lifetime when the World Heavyweight Champion, Apollo Creed, picks his name out of a hat and gives him shot at the Heavyweight Title. Overcoming self-doubt with the help of his crusty trainer Mickey and his pathologically shy girlfriend Adrian, as well as his best friend Paulie, Rocky rises to the challenge and goes the distance with Creed giving him the fight of his life when all he was expected to do was show up and get knocked out. Nearly 40 years and five sequels later, Creed picks up the narrative in 1998 with 13-year old Adonis Johnson, Apollo Creed's illegitimate son, who is rescued from a life of group homes and juvenile detention centers by Apollo's widow Mary Anne. Flash forward 17 years after living a life of upper-class respectability, Adonis has a promising job with a top financial firm but gives it up for his true passion: boxing. Moving to Philadelphia to seek out Rocky Balboa, his father's once arch rival and then protegee, too train him, Adonis meets a beautiful club musician named Bianca in his new apartment building. Succeeding in convincing Rocky Balboa be his trainer and manager, and with his father's natural boxing ability to aid him, Adonis handily wins his first major fight. At that point he is picked to fight Pretty Ricky Conlan, the Heavyweight Champion of the world after the word gets out that Adonis is Apollo Creed's son. The only catch: He must use his father's last name and drop “Johnson,” his mother's last name. With Bianca's guidance, Adonis concludes that he must take his father's name and embrace his father's legacy with all the pressure that comes with it. Who wins by a knockout? Find out!

Our final Spike Lee joint is 2015's CHI-RAQ: based on an Ancient Greek play, and set in modern-day gangland Chicago, this is both very different from and yet — at least in terms of its racial politics — remarkably similar to last week's film. We have contrasting reviews of the film, but go on to talk about the contemporary resonances of the movie, what it tries but fails to do with some of its characters, and how watching Spike Lee's genius over this past month has been eye-opening for both of us!Next WeekNext we embark on a new director: Nicolas Winding Refn. Our first Winding Refn picture is 1996's PUSHER, available here (remember we're only looking at the first film): https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pusher-Trilogy-DVD-Jesper-Salomonsen/dp/B000FH8TZ6.This Week's MediaXXIII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES (2018)MUM (2018): Stefan Golaszewski, Lesley Manville, Peter MullanRecommendationsMR AND MRS SMITH (2005): Doug Liman, Brad Pitt, Angelina JolieROMEO + JULIET (1996): Baz Luhrmann, Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire DanesGROSSE POINTE BLANK (1997): George Armitage, John Cusack, Minnie Driver BLADE (1998): Stephen Norrington, Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff FootnotesFirstly, soberingly, Rob mentions the Parkland, FL shooting as a recent touchstone for the film: https://edition.cnn.com/2018/02/15/us/florida-shooting-victims-school/index.html. Then, the play on which the narrative is based is the Aristophanes comedy LYSISTRATA: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysistrata. This week we’re going on a trip to Philly to get some quality training from a boxing legend in 2015’s Creed. This is the most recent installment in the Rocky franchise and it follows Apollo Creed’s illegitimate son, Adonis Johnson, on his journey to become a professional boxer. Adonis moves from LA to Philadelphia to get training and mentorship from his father’s greatest friend and rival, Rocky Balboa. While in Philly, Adonis meets a lovely young musician name Bianca and romance quickly blossoms. Eventually, Adonis is publicly revealed to be Apollo Creed’s son and he is sought after to fight the current WBC champion, Pretty Ricky Conlan. As Adonis and Rocky are getting to work preparing for the big fight, Rocky has a health scare that puts momentary strain on their relationship before bringing them closer together than ever. The story culminates with the biggest fight of Adonis’ life as he tries to prove his worth to himself and to the world. This is a pretty good movie that hits almost all of the buttons for a quality Rocky flick. Why didn’t Adonis, the wealthy kid from LA, get a better apartment in Philly? What is the exact timeline of this movie? Were those really Paulie’s dirty magazines? Should they have trimmed a few minutes off of the love story? Did the ending lead into a perfect setup for a sequel? Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Have a great week.
