Theatre director Robert Icke's production of Oedipus won best revival and a best actress award for Lesley Manville at last night's Olivier Awards - but his new play Manhunt is now demanding his attention at the Royal Court Theatre in London. The drama focuses on the story of Raoul Moat who attacked his ex-girlfriend and killed her new boyfriend before a stand-off with armed police which ended in his suicide. Samira talks to Robert Icke and to Samuel Edward-Cook who plays Moat. The Edwardian era - from Queen Victoria's death to the start of the First World War - is the subject of a new exhibition at the King's Gallery in London. Samira is joined by its curator Kathryn Jones from the Royal Collection Trust and by the historian and Alwyn Turner, author of Little Englanders: Britain in the Edwardian Era.The Swinging Sixties bring to mind films like Michael Caine's Alfie and the social realist dramas like Up The Junction. But A Touch of Love, released in 1969 and now getting a fresh outing on DVD, offers up an unusual female perspective on the era of free love. Margaret Drabble adapted her own novel the Millstone for the film which starred Sandy Dennis - alongside a young Ian McKellen in his first screen role. We hear from its director Waris Hussein - who also directed the first episodes of Dr Who.

Hannah Wales (missflicks.com) and Sam Pay (Song by Song podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Hannah's choice Back to Black. Back to Black (2024) is a biographical film based on the life of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse. Directed by Sam (Nowhere Boy) Taylor-Johnson it stars Marisa Abela as Amy, Jack O'Connell as Blake Fielder-Civil, Eddie Marsan as Mitch Winehouse and Lesley Manville as Cynthia Levy. Back to Black follows the standard music biopic structure and starts with Amy's love of singing in her home with her dad Mitch and grandmother Cynthia. She is quickly discovered and releases her debut album Frank. Things start going downhill when Amy meets Blake, the love of her life who also happens to be a bad influence on her. Back to Black has been heavily criticised for its representation of Mitch and Blake and failure to show Amy as anything other than a sad lonely addict. Recommendability scores reflected this and together with low scores across the other categories Back to Black scores 2.64 overall. Watch Asif Kapadia's documentary Amy instead. Queer Review | Daniel Craig Like You've Never Seen #moviereview #danielcraig #a24 In this video, we review the film 'Queer.' Directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, based on the 1985 novella by William S. Burroughs. Set in 1950s Mexico City, the film follows an outcast American expat (Daniel Craig) who becomes infatuated with a younger man (Drew Starkey). Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, Omar Apollo, and Lesley Manville also star.

On today's NYFF62 podcast, we welcome director Luca Guadagnino, screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, costume designer Jonathan Anderson, and cast members Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey to discuss Queer, the Spotlight Gala of the 62nd New York Film Festival, with NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. Written in the early 1950s yet not published until 1985, William S. Burroughs's Queer has come to be considered a canonical work in the career of the Beat Generation author and a cornerstone of transgressive gay literature. In his wildly ambitious adaptation, Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, NYFF55) expertly evokes the book's post–World War II time period and cinematically translates Burroughs's iconoclasm with panache. In a transformative role, Daniel Craig immerses himself into Burroughs's alter ego William Lee, a habitual heroin user luxuriating in freedom and desiccation among a disconnected group of gay American expatriates in Mexico City in the late 1940s. When enigmatic, preppy ex-military kid Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey) catches Lee's eye, he swoons into a headlong love affair, commencing an odyssey that will take them all the way to the Ecuadorian jungle in pursuit of the ultimate high. Buoyed by go-for-broke performances from Craig and Starkey, and rollicking, unexpected supporting turns from Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman, Queer is a dazzling showcase for many in Guadagnino's stable of collaborators, including Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, and music composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's a film that finds Guadagnino in his most formidable, gutsiest mode yet, a universal love story featuring expressionistic flights of fancy, gratifying moments of psychedelic surrealism, and surprising tenderness. Tickets to the New York Film Festival are moving fast! Get up-to-date information on all available tickets on a daily basis by visiting filmlinc.org/tix. Queer opens in theaters on November 27, courtesy of A24.

And that tagline ain't half bad."Tune in to hear a conversation about the novel that inspired one of the most celebrated filmmakers of a generation to go ahead and create a limited television show. Only, that's for later. For now, for this episode, Devin Diazoni and Paola Zavala are nothing but bookworms.Support Film Literate on Patreon!Guest: Paola Zavala (Instagram|Letterboxd)

This is an encore release of an earlier podcast episode.Lesley Manville is in high demand lately for her excellent work on screen, so it seems only fitting that she come to the MASTERPIECE screen in the role of brilliant editor Susan Ryeland in the twisty mystery of Magpie Murders. Manville explores what drew her to the role, and where she stands in her storied career.
P.T.August rolls on with the only PTA movie neither host had seen before embarking on this month-long odyssey, a 1950s period piece set in the London fashion world that seems on the outside like a stuffy Oscar drama but packs some hidden humour in its dramatic depths. It's 2017's Phantom Thread, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville. While most folks would might work their way through a filmography in chronological order, we've fallen into an accidental cosmic alignment as this feels more in line with The Master than almost any other movie Anderson has made, boasting another terrific Jonny Greenwood score. Plus: Hayley's fired up to welcome her little niece into the world, while J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Deadpool & Wolverine. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Phantom Thread is currently streaming on Amazon Prime at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include The Hangover, The O.C., Deadpool 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men, X-2: X-Men United, X-Men: First Class, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Alias, Maestro, The Crown and Old. We'll be back next week with returning favourite Matt Pollock as P.T.August continues with a much more youthful and funny film: 2021's Licorice Pizza, starring Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman, which can currently be found streaming on Crave and the Criterion Channel. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Our newest contributor Paul rejoins the podcast as Max and Brian revisit their series pairing off the films of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson. We've skipped ahead a bit to land on their 70mm roadshow pictures, each auteur using their clout to shoot on film, on location. In doing so they crafted two of their most personal movies, with wildly varied results. Give us a listen as we continue to pit these two geniuses against each other!Say Hi!
Do you hate starting your day with a confrontation? Then you should listen to our new episode instead! That's right, we're back and covering Paul Thomas Anderson's 2017 offering PHANTOM THREAD. Starring Daniel Day Lewis, Vicky Krieps and Lesley Manville. We talk all things fashion, breakfast and routine. And if you listen closely, perhaps you'll catch the plenty of tangents we stitched lovingly into the fabric of this episode. We strongly recommend listening alone or with headphones as not to disturb your loved ones at breakfast. Then, stick around for a chat with author Anthony Horowitz! Anthony Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – and is unique for working across so many media. Anthony is a born polymath; juggling writing books, TV series, films, plays and journalism. Anthony has written over 50 books including the bestselling teen spy series Alex Rider, which is estimated to have sold 21 million copies worldwide and has been turned into a hugely successful TV series by Amazon Freevee. A third series has just been filmed and the fourteenth Alex Rider novel, Nightshade: Revenge will be published in 2023. Anthony is also an acclaimed writer for adults and was commissioned to write two new Sherlock Holmes novels The House of Silk and Moriarty. He was commissioned by the Ian Fleming Estate to write continuation novels for James Bond with Trigger Mortis and Forever and Day, published in 2015 and 2018 respectively. A third novel in the series With a Mind to Kill was published in May 2022. Anthony's award-winning novel Magpie Murders was published in October 2016 to critical acclaim and was serialised on BritBox at the beginning of 2022 with Lesley Manville in the lead role. It will be televised on the BBC in 2023. The sequel, Moonflower Murders, will begin filming in September 2023. His new series featuring Detective Hawthorne and a sidekick called Anthony Horowitz has four books so far: The Word is Murder, The Sentence is Death, A Line to Kill and the recently published The Twist of a Knife. Anthony has just started work on a fifth: Close to Death. Anthony is responsible for creating and writing some of the UK's most beloved and successful television series, producing the first seven episodes (and the title) of Midsomer Murders. He is the writer and creator of award-winning drama series Foyle's War, which was the Winner of the Lew Grade Audience award for BAFTA. DCS Foyle was voted the nation's favourite detective in 2011. Anthony has also written other original complex dramas for ITV, particularly thrillers. Collision, a major five part “state of the nation” piece was transmitted on ITV1 in November 2009 to seven million viewers a night. He followed this with the equally successful legal thriller Injustice, also for ITV 1 - transmitted in June 2011. Foyle's War returned in March 2013 as a Cold War thriller and was greeted with such critical acclaim and demands for more that he wrote one final series, bringing the show to an end in January 2015. Anthony's series, New Blood, premiered on the BBC in 2016. In 2019 Anthony became a Patron to Home-Start in Suffolk, a small local family support charity working with families across the Suffolk county, as they navigate through challenging circumstances such as mental health issues, bereavement, long term or terminal illness, isolation, domestic abuse, poverty and so much more. The valuable work the organisation does right in the heart of the community – bringing together trained volunteers into families lives to support them both practically and emotionally, helping them to grow in confidence and empowering them with the skills to raise their children to flourish – is why Anthony chose to support this dedicated and hardworking charity. And in Anthony's own words – “For me, charity begins at Home-Start.” Anthony was awarded a CBE in 2022 for his services to literature --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/writersink/support
Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force.
