I'm revisiting one of my favorite conversations with bestselling author Steven Pressfield, whose wisdom on fear, resistance, and creativity has inspired millions. If you've been sitting on an idea, delaying your next move, or wondering why the work that matters most feels the hardest to begin, this episode will give you the perspective—and the push—you need. When Steven Pressfield published The Legend of Bagger Vance, many called him an overnight success. What they didn't see were the 30 years of failed novels, unproduced screenplays, and stretches of homelessness that came before it.Few conversations left an impact on me as this one did. Steven is now in his eighties and still creating, doing what he loves, and showing no signs of stopping. I never thought about fear the same after this podcast, thanks to Steven's words. His debut novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, was made into a film starring Matt Damon and Will Smith. His other novel, Gates of Fire, is required reading at West Point. Before his breakthrough at 52, he spent decades failing as a novelist and screenwriter, at times living out of his car. Marcus Aurelius Anderson sits down with bestselling author and creative legend Steven Pressfield in Santa Monica for a wide-ranging conversation centered on Pressfield's new historical fiction novel, The Arcadian. The two explore the novel's ancient mercenary protagonist Telamon, the philosophy of resistance, the role of vulnerability in transformation, and what it means to keep doing the work — even after losing everything in a wildfire. Episode Highlights: 9:55 — The Magical Horse and the Hope of ReleasePressfield unpacks the inciting incident of The Arcadian — Telamon spotting a horse he recognizes from the year 70 AD bearing the brand of the 10th Roman Legion. The horse, appearing 1,400 years later, becomes a symbol of potential redemption and drives the entire story forward. 10:35 — Westerns, Vulnerable Characters, and Human TransformationPressfield reveals that The Arcadian is structurally a Western — like Unforgiven or Shane — and explains why the genre's conventions (a man of violence, a lawless landscape, a vulnerable character) are the perfect vehicle for stories about overcoming emotional isolation and finding humanity. 28:38 — Resistance, the LA Fires, and the Work That Saves You Pressfield opens up about losing his home in the 2025 LA wildfires, including a 40-year-old handwritten copy of the Empedocles quote. He reflects on how devotion to the work — and an acorn from Thermopylae returned by a Special Forces friend — helped hold him together. Steven Pressfield is one of the most influential American authors of the past three decades. Best known for The War of Art, Gates of Fire, and The Legend of Bagger Vance, Pressfield has built a body of work that spans historical fiction, nonfiction on creativity, and screenwriting. A former Marine and advertising copywriter, he spent years living in a Chevy van before finally breaking through as a writer. His concept of "Resistance" — the internal force that blocks creative work — has become a touchstone for artists, entrepreneurs, and warriors worldwide. His newest novel, The Arcadian, was released May 26, 2025. He publishes a weekly blog, Writing Wednesdays, at StevenPressfield.com. Steven Pressfield, author of the 1995 novel that inspired the 2000 film, joins Based on a True Story to unpack the story's connections to the Bhagavad Gita, the real-life golfing legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen, and the choices Hollywood made when bringing the book to the screen. "Sometimes you write a character that asserts himself—something you didn't plan. It's like he wanted to come back, and he brought his own story with him. It was kind of my job as a writer to ask myself what that story was." — Steven PressfieldORDER THE ARCADIAN HERE: https://amzn.to/4nYHV5eSteven Pressfield is your favorite writer's favorite writer. And in this episode, Rain sits down with him in person in Los Angeles to talk about the craft behind The Arcadian, the new novel in his Telamon series. What starts as a conversation about a centuries-spanning warrior with a karmic curse quickly becomes a writing advice masterclass in how great fiction actually gets made: through instinct, detail, observation, and a willingness to follow a character wherever he leads.Steven breaks down how he discovered Telamon's immortality only after writing him across multiple books, why physical and historical details are what make the impossible believable, and how a 2500-year-old quote from an ancient Greek philosopher became the seed of an entire novel. If you write anything—novels, screenplays, brand stories, or scripts—this conversation will change how you think about finding and following a story. In this episode, you will learn to:- Trust instinct over planning in your writing and follow your characters even when you don't understand where they're going- Use specific physical details to earn the reader's trust before asking them to believe the extraordinary- Find story seeds in quotes, lyrics, and observations, and let them percolate until the full shape emerges- Get the story first and research second to avoid using research as a form of Resistance- Move the camera inside your prose, shifting perspective the way a cinematographer would, to write vivid, immersive scenesSpecial Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor for this episode, Vocatales → https://www.vocatales.comLinks & ResourcesFollow Steven Pressfield:Website → https://www.stevenpressfield.comInstagram → https://www.instagram.com/steven_pressfield/Book → The Arcadian by Steven Pressfield (out May 2025) https://amzn.to/4dA7yFJBook → A Man at Arms by Steven Pressfield https://amzn.to/4uvYojvBook → Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield https://amzn.to/4nVT5aTBook → The Legend of Bagger Vance by Steven Pressfield https://amzn.to/4tXWiYMBook → The War of Art by Steven Pressfield https://amzn.to/43wWTWnFilm Referenced → Past Lives directed by Celine SongFor more storytelling tips and strategies, visit:Website → https://rainbennett.comPodcast → https://thestorytellinglabpodcast.comOr follow along at:TikTok → https://www.tiktok.com/@chiefstorytellingofficerTwitter/X → https://twitter.com/rainbennettInstagram → https://www.instagram.com/rainbennettFacebook → https://www.facebook.com/thestorytellinglabYouTube → https://www.youtube.com/@RainBennett Hosted on Acast. There's a hidden force that is hurting your creative work.Steven Pressfield is the author behind The War of Art, Gates of Fire, and The Legend of Bagger Vance. After spending the past few years writing my own first book, I had a lot of questions for him about what actually gets in the way of creative work.In this episode, we talk about the difference between writing for ego and writing in service of something larger. I told him about the fear of success that crept in once my manuscript got close to being done, the dread of asking people for endorsements, and the strange grief of finishing a project you've lived inside for years. He shared things I didn't expect. The War of Art was a 10-year slow burn. He's been "terrified every minute" of his career and never gave in. He believes resistance is a real force with one job: to stop you. And he writes ninety pages into his next book before the current one ships.Read: The Arcadian: A Novel by Steven Pressfield: https://amzn.to/4ufrFhSYou'll learn:[00:00] Introduction[14:49] Two kinds of loneliness, and how spiritual grounding resolves both[20:29] Why writing alone doesn't feel lonely, and how the muse shows up in the creative space[34:54] Resistance, shadow careers, and addiction as misrouted creativity[56:34] Steven's pre-writing ritual: invoking the muse and checking ego at the door[1:04:45] Why over-editing is a form of resistance, and how to know when a work is done[1:07:49] Building a body of work instead of betting everything on one book[1:09:41] Creative discipline: why Steven distrusts breaks and why the muse likes knowing where to find you[1:14:10] Losing his home in the Malibu fire: detachment, grief, and what the goddess still has to offer[1:22:42] The Arcadian: karma, reincarnation, and whether the universe has a mechanism for justiceResources Mentioned:Read: A Horse Named Lonesome: Tales and Teachings to Reclaim Connection, Transcend Separation, and Discover the Divine Within by Luke Storey | BookRead: Govt Cheese: A Memoir by Steven Pressfield | BookRead: Animal Power: 100 Animals to Energize Your Life and Awaken Your Soul by Alyson Charles | BookRead: The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield | BookRead: The Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield | BookRead: The Legend of Bagger Vance: A Novel of Golf and the Game of Life by Steven Pressfield | BookThe Joe Rogan Experience #1901 – Steven Pressfield | PodcastOprah's Super Soul #164 – Steven Pressfield: Unlock Your Creative Genius | PodcastRead: The Odyssey by Homer and T. Bestselling author Steven Pressfield on what it means to have a creative calling, battling resistance, the role of faith in writing, and his memoir Govt Cheese. A remastered version of episode #058. You'll learn: Why a typewriter sat untouched in the back of a van for seven years before becoming a career. How self-sabotage shows up at the finish line, not just at the start. A rule of thumb for telling resistance apart from legitimate doubt. Why the more important a project is, the more terrifying it should feel. When you can finally write about pain, and why distance matters more than rawness. How an idea for a book might arrive as a single sentence and refuse to leave. A one-page method for outlining a novel, and why one page is enough. What John Keats's concept of negative capability can teach a writer in the dark middle of a draft. The metaphor that reframes writers as delivery drivers rather than creators. Why faith in the muse matters most when the writing feels too good to be your own. Resources & Links

Hey. We were gone, now we are back. Personal issues. So, we leave for a few weeks and all the sudden the ICE gestapo is out here killing moms in the street. Every Trump voter has blood on their hands. I can't wait to see you rotten conservatives standing at the pearly gates trying to mansplain to St. Peter how it's not murder becuase of "immigrants". Nasty gross conservatives. It's the worstcase.
Will Smith was pure box office gold between 1995 and about the late 2000's. Many people debate what was the movie that made him a star. Some say Independence Day, some think Bad Boys, a few says Ali. Almost no one says it was Bagger Vance. But it was definitely Men In Black that did it. A hit movie with a hit song at the height of 90's music videos. This classic made Will a Superstar, gave Tommy Lee Jones career more life, gave Vincent D'Onofrio enough scenery to eat for 5 years and even made a good cartoon!
Send us a textThis week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're going to pay tribute to the late, great Robert Reford and analyze just why this Hollywood icon belonged on the top of Mt. Olympus long before vanity, sanctimony and crass commercialism ruined his artistry. In other words, before he tarnished his legacy with offensive tripe like The Legend of Bagger Vance, the execrable Indecent Proposal and most especially by appearing as a generic schmoe bad guy #5 in Marvel movies, he was literally the undisputed KING of the Hollywood Hill starting with 1969's Downhill Racer directed by Michael Ritchie co-starring Gene Hackman, Camilla Sparv, Kenneth Kirk, Jim McMullan, Walter Stroud and Dabney Coleman in his ever so brief dreamboat era. Then Redford was his solid oakiest in 1972's Jeremiah Johnson directed by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Will Gear, Delle Bolton, Josh Albee, Paul Benedict, Jack Covin and Stefan Gierasch. And he showed us all how paranoid thrillers were done with 1975's 3 Days of the Condor directed once again by Sydney Pollack and co-starring Faye Dunaway, Max Von Sydow, John Houseman and Cliff RobertsonI'm your host Gino Caputi leading my dream team of scoffers and detractors, lil sis Roseanne Caputi and photobug/actor/gadfly Alex Robertson. Before we hit the trails on career highlights, the synopses:Downhill RacerAn arrogant young skier, David Chappellet, rockets to the top of the U.S. ski team, heedlessly chasing medals, without regard for his teammates or his Coach who tries without success rein him in. ⸻Jeremiah JohnsonA war-weary loner heads into the Rockies to live off the land and find peace, but the wilderness has other notion, transforming Jeremiah Johnson from naive pilgrim to Legendary Crow Killer, forged by experience and hardship. ⸻3 Days of the CondorMild-mannered CIA researcher Joe Turner, aka Condor, goes out for lunch and comes back to find everyone he works with dead. Suddenly Condor finds himself hunted, running from his own agency and clinging to the one woman who might trust him. Satire, Tropes, and Uncomfortable ConversationsMatthew and Riki examine the 2024 satirical film The American Society of Magical Negroes, starring Justice Smith. This provocative comedy tackles the "magical Negro" trope coined by Spike Lee—where Black characters exist primarily to help white protagonists—by imagining it as a real organization designed to keep white people comfortable. The film blends social commentary with romantic comedy as the protagonist must choose between his assigned role and his own desires.Questions We Discussed:What is the "magical Negro" trope and how has it appeared in films like The Green Mile, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and Ghost?Does the film work better as satirical sketch comedy than as a feature-length movie?Should we have avoided discussing this film as non-Black hosts, or is there value in these conversations across racial lines?Does the romantic comedy element undermine or enhance the film's social commentary? How does the character of Lizzie complicate the film's racial dynamics as a multiracial woman who "passes" as white? Is the final confrontation scene between Aaron and Jason genuine growth or does it center white comfort once again? Can characters like Guinan from Star Trek: The Next Generation or Morpheus from The Matrix fit this trope while still being well-developed?Why did this film generate such polarized reactions, particularly within Black media critique circles?**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. It's not that everyone who is steadily chanting Harē Kṛṣṇa or reading feels like doing it all the time, especially in the beginning. And for whatever reason, it could be the punishment-reward system that you had, as you mentioned. It could be subliminal. And the way to deal with that in the beginning of the practice, as I'm sure you know from many of the disciplines that you've applied in your life—education or sports or music or anything like that—is you have to turn professional. There's a book that I like. It's mostly about writing, and it's called The War of Art, not The Art of War. The War of Art means that when you want to do something creative, like write something, you may face what the author Steven Pressfield (who, by the way, is the author of the book The Legend of Bagger Vance, which was turned into a movie about Bhagavad Gītā and stars Will Smith) says: when you go to do something worthwhile, there's this resistance in the universe—instilled Resistance with a capital 'R'—very difficult to overcome. For instance, in writing, people often write books in their head, but when it comes time to sit down and actually do it, there's a strong resistance. Or to paint, or to learn a musical instrument. It's a lot harder in the beginning when you realize that you have to work at it. So what is his solution? He says you have to turn pro, like professionals; they show up and they just do it, whether they feel like it or not. And that's what in the beginning of devotional service, Rūpa Goswāmī described vaidhi bhakti—it's a discipline. In the beginning, you have to use your intelligence. Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad Gītā: evaṁ buddheḥ paraṁ buddhvā saṁstabhyātmānam ātmanā jahi śatruṁ mahā-bāho kāma-rūpaṁ durāsadam (BG 3.43) In the beginning, you have to use your intelligence to see what's good for you, like, you know, for studying for school, right? You may not feel like doing it sometimes, right? Is that a correct assumption? Yes. But you know, if I don't study, I'm going to suffer more later, because I'm going to sit down for the test and realize "Ah if I just put in a few more hours a day, I would have been ready for this." And you have to apply a similar principle in the beginning for chanting. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------ #spiritualawakening #soul #spiritualexperience #spiritualpurposeoflife #spiritualgrowthlessons #secretsofspirituality #vaisesikaprabhu #vaisesikadasa #vaisesikaprabhulectures #spirituality #bhaktiyoga #krishna #spiritualpurposeoflife #krishnaspirituality #spiritualusachannel #whybhaktiisimportant #whyspiritualityisimportant #vaisesika #spiritualconnection #thepowerofspiritualstudy #selfrealization #spirituallectures #spiritualstudy #spiritualquestions #spiritualquestionsanswered #trendingspiritualtopics #fanthespark #spiritualpowerofmeditation #spiritualteachersonyoutube #spiritualhabits #spiritualclarity #bhagavadgita #srimadbhagavatam #spiritualbeings #kttvg #keepthetranscendentalvibrationgoing #spiritualpurpose

In this episode of “Tuesdays with Morrisey,” we are joined by one of the most influential writers of our time, Steven Pressfield, most recently the author of The Daily Pressfield. Known as many writer's favorite writer, Pressfield's work has inspired creatives across various disciplines, from authors to entrepreneurs. His best-known book, The War of Art, introduced the concept of “resistance” and how it holds us back from realizing our full potential. Pressfield has been featured by major outlets, including The Joe Rogan Experience, The Daily Stoic, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.In this conversation, we discuss Pressfield's personal battle with resistance, his journey from struggling writer to best-selling author at the age of 52 with the publication of his first novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, and the lessons he's learned about discipline, fear, and self-doubt. Pressfield opens up about his creative process, his late-blooming success, and why overcoming resistance is essential for anyone with a calling, whether it's writing, art, or business.Several top takeaways from the discussion:Understanding Resistance: Pressfield defines resistance as the internal force that stops us from doing the work we're meant to do. It manifests as procrastination, perfectionism, fear, and doubt. According to Pressfield, success comes from recognizing this resistance and learning to push through it daily, regardless of your field.Falling in Love with the Process: For Pressfield, the key to sustained success is showing up and finding joy in the process itself, rather than focusing on the outcome. Even when self-doubt lingers, it's the discipline of doing the work consistently that leads to breakthroughs. The Power of Self-Discovery through Work: Pressfield believes that we discover who we truly are through the work we produce. Each project brings new insights into ourselves. In this way, creating art, stories, or any kind of work is not just about the end product but also about self-exploration.Navigating Self-Doubt and Fear: Pressfield shares that self-doubt is a constant companion, even after years of success. It's not something to avoid but to recognize as a part of the creative journey. Often, the fear we feel signals that we're on the right path and that the project is worth pursuing.Commit to Your Calling: As Pressfiled famously says, "put your a** where your heart wants to be." Whether it's writing, painting, or entrepreneurship, success lies in committing to your craft and showing up every day. It's the regular practice that transforms dreams into reality.FULL LIST OF TOPICS COVERED:Inspiration Behind The Daily Pressfield – Steven discusses the influence of Ryan Holiday and why he created a 365-day guide for overcoming resistance.Defining Resistance – What resistance is, why it matters, and how it acts as the barrier between the life we live and the life we want to live.Steven's Late-Blooming Journey – His path from working various jobs to publishing The Legend of Bagger Vance at 52, and how resistance shaped his early career.Navigating Resistance vs. Intuition – How to discern between resistance that arises from pursuing your potential versus the kind that indicates you're on the wrong path. The Role of Process in Creativity – The importance of falling in love with the process over focusing on outcomes, and how this drives Steven's consistency with writing.Managing Creative Blocks – Steven's strategies for overcoming extreme resistance and finding solid footing when facing creative challenges. The Understory Concept – Why understanding the "understory" is crucial for storytelling and how it applies to both fiction and real life.Advice on Committing to Your Calling – Steven's advice for creatives and anyone looking to pursue their dreams: "Put your ass where your heart wants to be."I hope you enjoy this thought-provoking conversation! Dylan's pick for this week is the Legend of Bagger Vance. The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), directed by Robert Redford, aimed to capture a blend of magical realism and historical drama set against the backdrop of 1930s Savannah, Georgia. Adapted from the novel by Steven Pressfield, the screenplay by Jeremy Leven focused on themes of redemption and spirituality, embodied by the mysterious caddy, Bagger Vance, played by Will Smith. The film stars Matt Damon as Rannulph Junuh, a war-torn former golfer, and Charlize Theron as his love interest, Adele Invergordon. The production took place primarily in Savannah and other locations in Georgia, chosen for their authentic Southern charm and to reflect the period setting. Redford and his team were meticulous in recreating the look and feel of the era, from the lush golf courses to the vintage wardrobe and set designs, all contributing to the film's nostalgic and mystical atmosphere. The production was notable for its challenges in capturing both the spiritual undertones and the technical aspects of the sport of golf. To bring authenticity to the golfing scenes, professional golf consultants were employed to work with the actors, ensuring their swings and techniques were accurate. Cinematographer Michael Ballhaus was tasked with creating a visual style that combined the grace of golf with the film's ethereal themes, often using soft lighting and sweeping camera movements to emphasize the serenity of the game. Despite its strong cast and ambitious production values, The Legend of Bagger Vance received mixed reviews upon release, with some critics praising its aesthetic beauty and performances, while others felt the narrative was overly sentimental. Nonetheless, the film remains notable for its attempt to blend the sports drama genre with a more philosophical, introspective approach. When a wealthy widow, Adele Invergordon, organizes a high-profile golf tournament to restore her late father's resort, she convinces Junuh to participate against two golf legends. Struggling to find his swing and purpose, Junuh encounters a mysterious caddy named Bagger Vance, who offers not just guidance on the course but also profound life lessons. Through his mentorship, Junuh confronts his inner demons, rekindles his love for the game, and rediscovers his lost sense of self. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Steven Pressfield, author of “The War of Art” shares how to tap into your creativity and unlock your full potential as an artist. He discusses the source of inspiration, sharing how he views ‘the Muse' and how we can fine tune ourselves to tap into it more. He unpacks how to find your voice as an artist and know yourself through each piece of work. He discusses the #1 thing that keeps creators from achieving their potential: fear. Explaining that fear is a sign that we're on the right path, and how we can transform this fear into a masterpiece. Him and André also discuss what distinguishes an amateur from a pro, balancing business and creativity, and our responsibility as artists to share our work. A film of the same title was released in 2000, directed by Robert Redford and starring Matt Damon, Will Smith and Charlize Theron. His father was in the Navy, and he was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1943. Since graduating from Duke University in 1965, he has been a U.S. Marine, an advertising copywriter, schoolteacher, tractor-trailer driver, bartender, oilfield roustabout, attendant in a mental hospital and screenwriter. His struggles to earn a living as a writer (it took seventeen years to get the first paycheck) are detailed in The War of Art, Turning Pro, The Authentic Swing, Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t, and The Knowledge. There's a recurring character in his books, named Telamon, a mercenary of ancient days. Telamon doesn't say much. He rarely gets hurt or wounded. And he never seems to age. His view of the profession of arms is a lot like Pressfield's conception of art and the artist:"It is one thing to study war, and another to live the warrior's life." In a world that celebrates overnight success, it's easy to forget that very often, achieving your dreams takes a heck of a long time. My guest knows this all too well. You may know Steven Pressfield as the bestselling author of books like The Legend of Bagger Vance, Gates of Fire, and The War of Art, but as he details in his new memoir, Govt Cheese, it took more than a quarter century for him to become a published novelist.Today on the show, Steven talks about what he learned in that journey, and the many odd jobs, from driving trucks to picking apples, that he took along the way. We discuss the lessons Steven gleaned that apply to achieving any dream, including how to overcome a propensity for self-sabotage, get your ego out of the way, finish what you start, and develop the killer instinct. This is a great, motivating conversation on learning not to "pull the pin" on the important commitments in your life. And we'll explain what that means coming up.Resources Related to the EpisodeSteven's previous appearances on the show:#55: The Warrior Ethos #281: Overcoming the Resistance by Turning Pro#692: The Two Halves of the Warrior's LifeSteven's books mentioned in the show:Govt CheesePut Your Ass Where Your Heart Wants to BeThe Legend of Bagger VanceThe War of ArtAoM Article: 4 Key Insights From the Bhagavad GitaAoM Article: Hector and Achilles — Two Paths to ManlinessSeth Godin's pamphlet for learning to "ship it"AoM Podcast #849: Live Life in CrescendoConnect With Steven PressfieldSteven's WebsiteSteven on IG
