Futuro prossimo.

EMERGENCY EPISODE!The boys call an emergency episode to talk about MERCY, a movie that came and went faster than Chris Pratt's lovable era.Steve and Justin have a million questions about this Philip K. Limp Dick entry in the hard sci-fi genre, like: “Is this pro- or anti-AI?”, “Why did Rebecca Ferguson agree to this?”, and “WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED, ANDY DWYER??” Luckily, Judge Maddox herself is here to clear some of it up.MERCY is already a strong contender for worst movie of 2026, but unlike real AI, it has no capacity to learn anything.Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

Chris Pratt's new movie takes us into a time where if you've been accused of a violent crime, no lawyer and no jury for you! “Mercy” is about a new AI criminal justice system that uses its super-duper AI powers to play judge, jury and executioner to those accused of violent crime. The accused are locked into a chair and sit face to face with the Mercy AI system which appears in the form of Rebecca Ferguson who looks better than most judges you'll deal with. The accused then has 90 minutes to prove their innocence, and has the AI power of Mercy at their fingertips to do so. It's a cinematic interpretation of the saying “Someone who is their own lawyer has a fool for a client.” In this movie's case, Pratt is a detective so he's got a bit of criminal investigation experience and he puts it to use after he's the one in the Mercy chair, accused of killing his wife. He gets to look through all the evidence. Call anyone in the law enforcement community and they'll go anywhere you need them to in order to find clues, leads, etc. As Pratt leads this investigation to clear himself, he uncovers a sinister plot. Is it worth finding out more in the theater? Watch this episode to find out! “Mercy” also stars Annabelle Wallis, Chris Sullivan, Kali Reis, Kylie Rogers, Jeff Pierre, Rafi Gavron, Kenneth Choi, Jamie McBride and Ross Gosla. This month on The Film Board, Pete Wright drags Andy Nelson, Tommy Metz III, and Steve Sarmento into an emergency bonus hearing because Andy texted, essentially, “We can't skip a month. Also I found a movie.” That movie is Mercy, a slick, noisy, deeply committed screenlife thriller where Chris Pratt wakes up strapped into a futuristic execution-chair-courtroom and has 90 minutes to prove he didn't kill his wife. The judge is an AI who looks like Rebecca Ferguson. Which is frankly unfair to every other AI.From there, it's a full-spoilers sprint through a world where justice is software, surveillance is just “normal life,” and every single camera on Earth is apparently pointed at exactly the wrong moment. The panel fights over what Mercy thinks it's doing (a cautionary tale about AI and institutions) versus what it actually does (a pulpy, coincidence-powered ride that occasionally forgets its own premise and wanders off toward terrorism and explosions).Andy is… not having it. Steve is torn in the way only a lover of scrappy sci-fi concepts can be: “It's messy, but I'm intrigued.” Tommy—who walked in expecting bargain-bin January nonsense—ends up delighted, especially after an accidental 3D screening turns the whole thing into a theme-park attraction where the chair is the main character. Pete tries to keep the court metaphor alive long enough to pronounce a verdict, but keeps getting distracted by the movie's most dangerous idea: not the AI, but the assumption that the only way to get “justice” is if the system can see literally everything. Also: yes, we talk about the wind. The screens have wind.Watch & DiscoverWatch Now: Apple TV | Amazon | LetterboxdOriginal Theatrical Trailer Support The Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Become a member for just $5/month or $55/yearJoin our Discord community of movie loversThe Next Reel Family of Film Shows:Cinema Scope: Bridging Genres, Subgenres, and MovementsThe Film BoardMovies We LikeThe Next ReelSitting in the DarkConnect With Us:Main Site: WebMovie Platforms: Letterboxd | FlickchartSocial Media: Facebook | Instagram | Threads | Bluesky | YouTube | PinterestYour Hosts: Pete | JJ | Steve | Tommy | Andy | Ocean Shop & Stream:Merch Store: Apparel, stickers, mugs & moreWatch Page: Buy/rent films we've discussedOriginals: Source material from our episodesSpecial offers: Audible

From rabid chimps in Hawaii to AI judges in the near future, we are covering the wild, the weird, and the wonderful in this week's episode. We're going bananas (sorry, had to) over the new horror sensation Primate, directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down). Set in sunny Hawaii, this isn't your average vacation—it's a "slasher" where the killer is a pet chimp named Ben who has contracted a nasty case of rabies. We discuss if this 90-minute monkey-fest is worth your time. Fun Flix Fact: The film stars Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur (CODA). Director Johannes Roberts uses Kotsur's deafness to create an incredibly tense scene where the movie goes completely silent, showing us the horror from his perspective as the rabid chimp stalks around him entirely unheard!Next, we're checking out Mercy, the high-concept sci-fi thriller starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson. Pratt plays a detective accused of a crime who has exactly 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI judge he actually helped create. It's a race against the clock that will make you look at your Smart Home devices a little differently.Fun Flix Fact: Director Timur Bekmambetov—the visionary behind the "curving bullets" in Wanted—designed the trial to play out in near real-time. The 90-minute ticking clock in the movie almost perfectly matches the film's actual runtime!Since Primate has us obsessed with "Maniac Monkeys," we're traveling back 40 years to the cult classic Link. Starring a young Elisabeth Shue, this British horror features a super-intelligent chimp (who is also a butler!) who turns homicidal when he's threatened with retirement.Fun Flix Fact: "Link" was actually played by an orangutan named Locke! To make him look like a chimpanzee, the trainers had to dye his fur black and fit him with prosthetic ears. It worked so well that most audiences never even realized he was a different species! And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. In 2017, Hugh Jackman led an ensemble cast in a musical based on the life of circus ringmaster P.T. Barnum, which proved to be a smash hit at the box office. Co-starring Zac Effron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Paul Sparks, and including Zendaya, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Keala Settle, Sam Humphrey, Eric Anderson, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as members of Barnum's freakshow, with songs by Benji Pasek and Justin Paul, this film directed by Michael Gracey earned multiple awards and nominations, including a Grammy for its soundtrack. However, critics were mixed, praising its music and production, but roasting the film's historical revisionism and melodramatic approach. With a stage musical coming to the West End later this year, will our hosts decide that the greatest show on Earth is The Greatest Showman? Or would we rather run away to join the circus than have to watch it again? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Chris Hewitt sit down with two wonderful guests — first, we strap Chris Pratt to a chair (metaphorically speaking, that is) and ask him about his new thriller, Mercy, in which he does battle with an A.I. judge played by Rebecca Ferguson; [25:50 - 40:14 approx] and then Claire Foy, star of this week's moving drama, H Is For Hawk, drops by the office to talk about working with goshawks and Gleeson, Brendan. [1:13:07 - 1:32:55 approx] Both are delights, we're sure you'll agree. Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, briefly, Beth Webb for a fun episode in which they reveal their specialist subject on Mastermind, discuss great movie doctors, review No Other Choice, Saipan, Mercy, The History Of Sound, and H Is For Hawk, and go all-in on Oscar nominations discussion in a bumper-sized movie news section. It's all here, apart from the bits we cut out. Enjoy!
It's Oscar nominations week, so we're playing catch up as well as slogging through some extremely January movies. We recorded these reviews before Thursday's Academy announcement, so we have a couple of updates for you: Amanda Seyfried didn't get a nomination for "The Testament of Ann Lee," but "Come See Me in the Good Light" did make it into the documentary feature category. Here's what we discussed: MERCY. Chris Pratt is a police detective accused of killing his wife in a futuristic hellscape of Los Angeles. He has 90 minutes to prove his innocence before an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson) or he'll be executed. We debate exactly what this Amazon release is propaganda for, but agree that it (and Pratt) are terrible. In theaters. THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE. Amanda Seyfried IS Ann Lee, found of the Shaker religious movement, in director and co-writer Mona Fastvold's ambitious musical. This had a brief awards run at the end of 2025 and is returning to theaters this weekend. The song and dance numbers are mesmerizing. COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT. The late poet Andrea Gibson is the subject of this intimate documentary, which is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking but always stirring. Director Ryan White follows the genderqueer Gibson and their partner as they navigate a lengthy and painful cancer battle, but there's plenty of room for humor and even hope. Streaming on Apple TV. We're very excited to be bringing you this latest episode, recorded in front of an audience as part of our Everyman Soundtracking film club. Edith was joined on stage by Kathryn Bigelow, Noah Oppenheim, Greg Shapiro, Rebecca Ferguson and Volker Bertelmann after a screening of Kathryn's Netflix film, A House Of Dynamite. Told non-chronologically and from multiple perspectives, the narrative follows the responses of different US government and military officials after an unknown adversary launches a single intercontinental ballistic missile at a North American city.
Today on New Movie Monday we hide under our desk and wait for the fall out of A House of Dynamite. We discuss the films decision to tell the story in three parallell points of view, the existentail dread posed by a world full of nuclear weapons, and the abrupt ending of the film. This one has been divisive with the host, we would love to know what you think. Synopsis: When a single, unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a race begins to determine who is responsible and how to respond. Sean and Amanda start the show by covering the major box office success of ‘Chainsaw Man,' reacting to the news that Cinemark is opening myriad new 70 mm IMAX screens across the country, and discussing what it represents for the future of moviegoing (2:00). Then, they deep dive into Kathryn Bigelow's new film, ‘A House of Dynamite,' starring Rebecca Ferguson. They unpack their very complicated feelings by highlighting what they found successful, including a titillating first act and some strong performances, and they address its major flaws, most notably a wild third act that features a deeply unsuccessful performance from Idris Elba (12:59). Finally, Adam Nayman joins the show to discuss Kelly Reichardt's new film, ‘The Mastermind,' starring Josh O'Connor as an outcast loner (1:07:46). They talk about Reichardt's ability to identify this type of character and give credit to her and O'Connor for crafting such a wonderful performance.
