Screenwriters Peter Straughan (Conclave) and Zack Baylin (The Order) discuss their latest projects and previous work, their process, and much more. Peter Straughan is a writer and playwright. His most recent screenplay is the 2024 film Conclave. Before Conclave, Peter's screenwriting credits have include The Goldfinch, Our Brand is Crisis, Frank and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, the latter of which received several accolades including a 2011 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. In addition, he wrote the 2015 television adaptation of Wolf Hall, which earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special. Editor - Jessica Baclesse REZ BALL editor, Jessica Baclesse says she got the job for the film through a chance encounter with a not-so-stranger across a crowded room.  Random or not, Jess already had plenty of editing experience under her belt, including time logged cutting a big sports movie with Michael B. Jordan's directorial debut, CREED III (2023). REZ BALL was directed by Sydney Freeland and co-written by Freeland and Sterlin Harjo (RESERVATION DOGS).  It tells the story of the Chuska Warriors, a Native American high school basketball team from New Mexico who, after losing their star player, must band together to keep their quest for a state championship alive. Jessica Baclesse Jessica Baclesse is an award-winning film editor working in features, television and commercials. In addition to editing Creed III with Tyler Nelson, she was an additional editor on Marvel's 2021 television series Loki, directed by Kate Herron, and a pre-production editor on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Baclesse's work on Nike's 2020 You Can't Stop Us received an Emmy for Outstanding Commercial, a Cannes Grand Prix Lion and an AICP Award for Best Editing Montage.  Jess has also edited global commercial campaigns, including Instagram's Get Into What You Love, which was nominated for a Webby Award for Best Use of Video or Moving Image in Advertising. Baclesse received her MFA in Film from Columbia University and has edited many critically renowned narrative shorts that have been featured at festivals such as Slamdance, LA Film Festival, and Palm Springs International Film Festival. Chassidy Jade is an editor, producer and director who has made monumental strides in the entertainment industry. What's impeccable about Chassidy is all the different initiatives she's set into motion. With her desire to make opportunities in post-production more accessible, her success in various entrepreneurial pursuits and career, as a whole, is all about hustle, willpower, staying excellent and taking risks. As a creative reppin' Memphis, Tennessee, and Miami, Florida, we get to talk about the vibrancy of Black creativity in Memphis and how one of her first big jobs came to be, editing and producing recaps on tour with Chris Brown right after college, which was an opportunity that presented itself after she and her roommate started crashing sets and meeting people in the industry. This risky move gave her a pivotal skill in the area of editing, one that she still prides herself on today. Chassidy has already made history as the first Black woman senior lead editor for the NBA. An opportunity she says inspired her to help kick open doors for others, like her involvement with Charlotte-based Black Girls Film Camp and in starting Editbae Post, her very own post-production company. We also get to talk about the creation of Crown Me Royal Labs, her production company that began as an outpouring of appreciation for visual artists, dancers, designers and art. On the eighteenth episode of ATFT, I am joined by filmmaker/ podcaster/ documentarian/ “all around badd-ass” Shane Kidd- Walker to talk about the incredible Creed franchise starring Michael B Jordan, Sylvester Stallone and Tessa Thompson!  This episode is explicit with spoilers.  The Creed franchise is a continuation of the decades- spanning beloved Rocky franchise. Adonis Johnson (Jordan) is the son of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), the antagonist and later friend of Rocky in the Rocky franchise, but he never met his father. Like his late father he is a fighter who moves from LA to Philadelphia to fight full time and get help training from Rocky. From there he creates a strong bond with his “unc” Rocky and develops a relationship with Bianca (Thompson), a popular singer in Philly. So far, there are three Creed films with the first being released in 2015, the second in 2018, and the third in 2023. Each of the Creed films have parallels to the coinciding Rocky films. While the franchise is incredibly popular and beloved among long time fans, each of the films have received critical acclaim.  The audio quality gets much better after the first fifteen minutes. I'm happy to say this is one of the best quality- sounding episodes so far! This is Shane's first guest appearance on ATFT! He has been one of the biggest champions of this podcast for which I am incredibly grateful.
