On en a beaucoup parlé les jours qui ont suivi, les images resteront sans doute dans l'histoire du cinéma, Robert de Niro recevant de Leonardo Dicaprio une palme d'or d'honneur en ouverture du 78ème festival de Cannes, c'est historique. Et tous les journalistes de mentionner sa toute première célébration à Cannes en 1976 qui avait lancé sa carrière et imprimé son nom dans le monde entier. On la voit encore cette affiche où De Niro se tient debout devant son taxi jaune. Près de 50 ans plus tard, Taxi Driver reste un film fascinant, qui nous montre un personnage que sa solitude a rendu inquiétant et qui, pourtant, est convaincu d'être du bon côté. Mais c'est là qu'il faut sortir des sentiers battus, des raccourcis : l'image que nous offrent les médias et surtout la télévision, car finalement c'est surtout ça, le festival de Cannes, une émission de télévision qui nous vend du rêve avec ces grands acteurs et réalisateurs, américains surtout, dans le cadre idyllique de la Côte d'azur. Car quand on s'y trouve, dans cette ville qui finalement n'est pas bien grande, au milieu de la foule agitée de gens de cinéma, de médias, de Cannois, de touristes, d'invités, c'est pas du tout la même chose. On est soit perdu, on ne sait pas où ça se passe, même si on a le badge, hein, tellement il y a des accrédités qui courent partout, soit on ne voit rien, à part la foule. Ah ben oui, je me suis une nuit, retrouvé obligé à quatre heures du matin de rentrer d'une soirée à pied, des kilomètres, car toute la croisette était à l'arrêt, coincée à mort.Alors imaginez-le, Robert de Niro, en 1976. Déjà il a pas du tout la même image que celle qui s'imprime dans votre tête actuellement. Son compère Martin Scorsese non plus, mince avec sa barbe noire, d'ailleurs essayez de le reconnaître dans le film, en client cocu dans le taxi, et fou furieux. Et bien, ils n'en mènent pas large, ces deux jeunes cinéastes. Oh Cannes, ils connaissent, enfin un peu, car ils y sont venus deux ans plus tôt, totalement inconnus, pour présenter un premier film à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs, ça s'appelait Mean streets, et leur avait valu de se faire un peu remarquer.Mais depuis, De Niro a joué Vito Corleone jeune dans Le Parrain 2, sa cote a monté et pourtant, il a refusé un blockbuster pour un tout petit cachet sur un second film avec Scorsese, Taxi Driver. Il y croit. Mais à la projection en compétition, ça ne se passe pas bien. En fait, le public, comme le jury, est terriblement divisé. Trop violent. Mais New York est comme ça ! D'accord mais vous justifiez la violence du héros ! Bref, quand il apprend que le grand Tennessee Williams, membre du jury, a détesté le film, Scorsese repart pour New York sans attendre le verdict, bientôt suivi par De Niro. Mais le jour de la délibération, deux autres membres du jury nommés Ennio Morricone et Costa Gavras bataillent ferme, alors, c'est à la surprise générale qu'on annonce que la Palme d'or va à Taxi Driver. Il n'y a plus que le producteur pour recevoir le prix, avec la moitié de la salle debout et une partie de l'autre qui siffle en guise de protestation. La carrière de Taxi Driver est lancée, on va courir dans les salles comme rarement après une Palme, et souvent on ne sera pas d'accord, après, au bistro. Robert De Niro deviendra la légende du cinéma américain qu'on connaît et du cinéma tout court, d'ailleurs. Et c'est à Cannes que ça a commencé.

Il a eu le privilège accordé aux plus grand-es en recevant une palme d'honneur cette année à cannes, remise par un Leonardo Di Caprio admiratif.
