Movie of the Year: 1984The Karate Kid(with Adam Kempenaar from Filmspotting!) In a riveting episode of the "Movie of the Year" podcast, the panel dives deep into the beloved 1984 classic, "The Karate Kid." With guest panelist Adam Kempenaar, the host of the renowned podcast Filmspotting, this episode offers a comprehensive exploration of the film's enduring appeal. Through detailed discussions, the episode examines the intricate relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, the directorial vision of John G. Avildson, and the thematic clash of Eastern and Western philosophies that defines the movie. The Bond Between The Karate Kid's Daniel and Mr. MiyagiCentral to "The Karate Kid" is the heartwarming and transformative relationship between Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio, and Mr. Miyagi, portrayed by Pat Morita. The podcast panel, with Kempenaar's insights, delves into how this dynamic serves as the film's emotional core. They discuss how Daniel, a teenager struggling to adapt to his new life in California, finds an unlikely mentor in Mr. Miyagi, a quiet and wise karate master.Kempenaar highlights the authenticity and depth of their bond, noting how Mr. Miyagi's unconventional training methods—such as the iconic "wax on, wax off" routine—teach Daniel more than just karate. These lessons instill discipline, patience, and resilience, ultimately shaping Daniel's character and helping him face his bullies, particularly Johnny Lawrence of the Cobra Kai dojo. The discussion underscores how their relationship transcends a typical mentor-student dynamic, evolving into a profound friendship that resonates with audiences to this day.The Vision of Director John G. AvildsenJohn G. Avildsen, the director of "The Karate Kid," is celebrated for his ability to craft inspirational underdog stories, a skill he honed with the Academy Award-winning "Rocky." The podcast explores Avildson's directorial approach, which brings a unique blend of grit and sentimentality to the film. Kempenaar and the panelists discuss Avildson's talent for creating emotionally charged narratives that are both realistic and uplifting.Avildson's meticulous attention to character development and storytelling is a focal point of the conversation. The panel appreciates how he captures the nuances of Daniel's journey and Mr. Miyagi's mentorship. They also highlight Avildson's skill in choreographing the film's fight scenes, which are not only thrilling but also imbued with deeper philosophical undertones.Eastern vs. Western Philosophies in The Karate KidA significant theme in "The Karate Kid" is the clash between Eastern and Western philosophies. This thematic conflict is intricately woven into the narrative, contrasting the peaceful, introspective teachings of Mr. Miyagi with the aggressive, results-driven mentality of the Cobra Kai dojo. The podcast episode delves into how this cultural juxtaposition is portrayed and its impact on the characters and story.Kempenaar provides an insightful analysis of how Mr. Miyagi embodies Eastern principles such as balance, humility, and inner peace. In contrast, the Cobra Kai, led by the ruthless Sensei Kreese, represents a Western emphasis on competition and dominance. The discussion examines how these differing philosophies influence Daniel's growth and the film's resolution, with Daniel ultimately embracing Miyagi's teachings to triumph in the All-Valley Karate Championship.Adam Kempenaar's Perspective on The Karate KidGuest panelist Adam Kempenaar brings a fresh perspective to the podcast, enriching the discussion with his extensive knowledge of film history and analysis. As the host of Filmspotting, Kempenaar is adept at dissecting cinematic elements and contextualizing them within broader cultural and artistic frameworks. His...

On this edition of Parallax Views, for nearly 50 years Troma has been the independent movie studio with an uncompromising vision that has alternately grossed out, offended, and entertained audiences from around the world with such features as The Toxcic Avenger franchise, the Class of Nuke Em High series, Troma's War, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, Tromeo and Juliet (penned by James Gunn of Guardians of the Galaxy fame), and, most recently, #ShakespeareShitstorm among others! They've also distributed such madcap films as Surf Nazis Must Die, Chopper Chicks in Zombie Town (starring before-he-was-famous Billy Bob Thornton), and Monster in the Closet (starring a before-he-was-famous Paul Walker) as well as such challenging and controversial cinema as Story of a Junkie, Combat Shock, and the experimental films of Giuseppe Andrews (Detroit Rock City, Cabin Fever). Joining us to discuss the little movie studio that could is Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma alongside Michael Herz. Be forewarned, Lloyd is irreverent, non-pc, and speaks his mind. As I say in the show intro "You will be triggered". In the course of our conversation Lloyd and I discuss a number of topics including what a Troma film is (for the unfamiliar), how Lloyd went from attending Yale in the hopes of becoming a social worker to catching the film bug, whether or not people confuse Troma for being a right-wing "shock jock" enterprise like Breitbart or the antic of Steve Bannon, Hollywood's silence on the New Jim Crow laws of Georgia, Lloyd's appearance on the Morton Downey Jr. Show, the influence of French cinema and Auteur Theory on Lloyd and Troma's work, Troma films as being steeped in satire and often based on events and social issues of the day, the influence of Andy Warhol on Lloyd and the Troma's movie Sugar Cookies (starring cult actress and Warhol factory girl Mary Woronov), working on the big budget Hollywood movie The Final Countdown w/ Kirk Douglas, working on John G. Avildsen's Rocky and Saturday Night Fever, C. Wright Mills' Power Elite theory and Lloyd's theory of the elite, the problem of Hollywood, the influence of Stan Lee and Marvel on Troma, Lloyd's socialist relatives and their influence on him growing up (we talk about Cuba, Fidel Castro, etc.!), Lloyd's love of the underdog, LGBTQ+ fans of Troma, Lloyd's appearance in The Last Blockbuster, a story about Lloyd's problem with Hollywood involving the great actor and writer Trent Haaga, and much, much more.

In this first of our two-part discussion of the Rocky films, we look at the film that began the series almost 50 years ago. There's a lot about 1976's Rocky that... isn't that good. John G. Avildsen's direction is drab, the story basic, the themes rudimentary - but with that comes a roughness and a sincerity to the whole affair that might be just what makes it work after all. Sylvester Stallone's Rocky is a physical brute, softened by his unusual - and unusually pretty - features, his inability to avoid trying to befriend any animal that crosses his path, his demeanour that's at once confident and shy, and his intellectual simplicity. José argues that the boxing is a diversion, a Trojan horse within which to sneak Rocky and Adrian's love story. And we think about the character of Apollo Creed, his use as a substitute for Muhammad Ali, and why he couldn't have been white. Rocky was a phenomenon upon its release, an immediate cultural touchstone that contains images and scenes so iconic that, five decades on, we continue to attach the same emotions to them and draw the same pleasure from recalling them. Well, we say "we", but, as is typical, Mike has never seen it before. So while José revisits, Mike joins the party for the first time, and we discuss the quality, significance and impact of this iconic film. Recorded on 21st February 2021.

In this episode Mark talks about one of his favourite films: the inspirational 1976 American sports drama film "Rocky" directed by John G. Avildsen, which was written and stars Sylvester Stallone. The premise of the film is the "rags to riches" story of Rocky Balboa: a working class Italian-American boxer, who works works as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philidelphia, who gets given the opportunity to prove himself as a fighter by being given a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship. Also starring Talia Shire as Adrian, Burt Young as Paulie (Adrian's brother), Burgess Meredith as Mickey Goldmill (Rocky's trainer), and Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed. This was the first film of many that tells the story of the character of Rocky Balboa's rise from an amateur club fighter to an elite athlete and boxer, his family, the start of a rivalry that would grow to become a relationship of both respect and friendship over the course of the other films, and Rocky's indomitable spirit to never give up no matter what opponent he is facing. "Rocky" is an inspirational film in so many ways, and it is a film that teaches us all the value of "going the distance" and not stopping until you have achieved all that you have worked hard for and perhaps sacrificed so much. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/markthepoet/message

through some combination of time, Twitter, and pop culture osmosis the original Karate Kid has been whittled down to an easy punchline 34 years after its premiere. It’s easy to forget that John G. Avildsen’s film is actually a pretty masterfully told coming of age story—Pat Morita’s performance as Miyagi got an Oscar nom, for goodness sake—when you’re surrounded by drunk dudes screaming “sweep the leg, Johnny” at NBA games and using “wax on, wax off” as a way to describe jerking off. But that’s the way time works, man. Things change. Hard corners get softened by easy jokes. The inspirational quotes that seemed supremely important underneath your high school yearbook photo suddenly don’t mean half a powder room shit when you’re past 50 and waking up next to a Coors bottle. From Garrett Chaffin-Quiray in 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die: "Short on brains, long on brawn - and heart, John G. Avildsen's Rocky catapulted the floundering career of Sylvester Stallone into the stratosphere.  At the same time, it reaped unprecedented box-office sales, established a movie franchise, and landed a one-two punch of jock stereotypes as rich with caricature [sic] today as they were riveting performances in 1976. "The story centers on Rocky Balboa (Stallone), a boxer beyond his prime.  He falls in love with Adrian (Talia Shire), the sister of his friend Paulie (Burt Young), and then works to earn the respect of his trainer Mickey (Burgess Meredith).  On the receiving end of a publicity stunt, he eventually gets a chance to unset Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), the heavyweight boxing champion of the world. "Scored with Bill Conti's pulsing trumpet blasts and percussive rumble, Rocky is an immensely entertaining drama about struggling for satisfaction in an indifferent world.  As the combined story work of former Muhammad Ali opponent Chuck Wepner and 'Italian Stallion' Sylvester Stallone, the now famous actor-writer proved versatile and tenacious.  Writing the script, he connected its sale to his participation in the lead role, despite being virtually unknown at the time.  Desperate or inspired bid, he hit a grand slam and become one of Hollywood's biggest superstars. "The film is often overlooked as schmaltz, especially considering Stallone's subsequent career, yet Rocky lovingly details the white working class.  Rocky, Paulie, Adrian, and Mickey respectively work as a debt collector, meat packer, pet store clerk, and gym proprietor; the only upward mobility each has are wishes and dreams.  This 'biopic' returns to a world of folklore where underdogs get their well-deserved chance after working hard. "Important in Rocky are the values of honor and courage, so often questioned in movies throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Such reassurance was well received, if gross receipts are any indication, and Avildsen's film walked off with Best Picture honors at the Academy Awards to make it one for the record books." The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Director & Writer Ash Avildsen of AMERICAN SATAN. director Ash Avildsen, the son of Academy Award winning director John Avildsen (ROCKY, THE KARATE KID), and I would love to set up an interview with you and Ash to share his incredible and inspiring story about how he recently met his father and reunited with him shortly before John's passing this year. Ash is now carrying the torch passed to him by his famous dad by directing the new film AMERICAN SATAN (in theaters now and VOD this February) starring HBO's "Game of Thrones" star John Bradley, Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), BooBoo Stewart (Twilight), Olivia Culpo (The Other Woman), Mark Boone Jr (Sons of Anarchy) and more. Helmed by director & writer Ash Avildsen AMERICAN SATAN tells the story of a young rock band, half from England half from the US, who move to the Sunset Strip to chase their music dreams.  Living in a van, their passion and talent exceed their means to survive when an enigmatic stranger (Malcolm McDowell) preys on the emotional turmoil of lead singer Johnny Faust (Andy Biersack) who has just learned of his mother's (Denise Richards) grave illness. Manipulating this time of weakness for the band, he offers them a deal that will set them on a path of fame, fortune, and ultimately dark destruction. Caught in the middle of a pact with the devil himself, their music and controversial altercations end up influencing society beyond anything this century has seen.
