This week we interviewed our Amazing Race friends, Sheri and Akbar Cook. We wanted to bring this to you because they are pretty amazing people and have such an inspiring story to tell. Akbar H. Cook Sr. was born and raised in Newark's West Ward. He attended Essex Catholic High School, where he excelled as a student and basketball player. Mr. Cook attended college on two basketball scholarships, attending St. Catherine's College in Kentucky before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University, a Division I university in Boca Raton, Florida. He went on to receive a Master's Degree in Administration from St. Peters University in Jersey City in 2006. Mr. Cook's love for children and basketball led him to Newark Vocational School in 2008, where he became head coach of the Boys' Basketball Team, and in 2012, he was named Vice Principal of West Side High School. Mr. Cook is well known for having a stern, yet caring presence in the lives of many of Newark's youth. His desire to uplift and educate children is always at the forefront of his work in Newark Public Schools. Mr. Cook volunteers in food kitchens and participates in Christmas tree and toy drives. He also organizes recreational activities for Newark Public School students and works closely with the Newark Police Department to ensure safe transportation for all students after school functions. In addition to serving as a Vice Principal at West Side High School and head basketball coach, Mr. Cook also serves as co-director of Greater Newark's LifeCamp, a summer camp for inner city youth.

Akbar Cook is Principal at West Side High School in Newark, NJ. He joins host Tamisha Hallman to talk about the innovative initiatives he is implementing in Newark, his life, and what it is like interacting with celebrities like Ellen and Oprah.
"It was about her dignity," was how Akbar Cook, principal of West Side High School in Newark, NJ described how one of his students reacting violently when security guards tried to check her bag. She was homeless and her bag was full of dirty clothes and she didn't want anyone to know. Instead of punishing her, Cook made sure all of his children had access to washing machine and dryer. And it made all the difference.
Today’s guests helps inner city kids change their view of possibility...and he started with Friday night hang outs and clean clothes. Akbar and I spoke about: How to educate with love and create relationships to move forward in life What change is possible even for kids who have never even known safety and security through vision and action Labels mean nothing- the sky is the limit when you have the right support Principal at West Side High School in Newark, NJ, Akbar Cook has worked to increase attendance and end violence within his community. He realized that students were missing school roughly 3 times a week because they were being made fun of for not having clean clothes. In response, he transformed the school’s locker room into a laundromat for students to clean their clothes for free, and attendance has increased. Additionally, due to violence in their community and the desire to keep his students or his “babies” as he likes to call them out of trouble, Akbar Cook created an after-school program that works to keep students off the street, encourage studying, and overall gives them a place free of violence. Our guest, Akbar Cooks says when he found out that 85% of this students were missing 3 to 5 days of school per month because they didn’t have clean clothes—and that they were being bullied in school and through social media because of it—he vowed to make a difference. Mr. Cook says he wrote a grant and raised funds to install a laundromat in the school. Mr. Cook spoke on-air about some of the issues his students face outside the school that become barriers to their success in the classroom. Principal Cook admits that his story went viral and captured the attention of Ellen DeGeneres. He spoke about his recent appearance on Ellen’s talk show.
