In this episode of the Max Out Mindset podcast, we are thrilled to welcome Coach Paul Limongi, a highly accomplished football coach with an impressive track record. Although I have only known Coach Limongi for a couple of years, his impact on the athletic world has been significant and long-lasting. Before joining Westside High School, my alma mater, Coach Limongi, spent 16 years at Burke High School in Omaha, Nebraska. During his tenure there, he led his team to one state championship in 2018 and amassed an impressive 106-55 record. Coach Limongi's ability to nurture and develop talent has been instrumental in helping many of his players continue their careers at the collegiate level. Two years ago, Coach Limongi transitioned to Westside High School, where he has continued his success. In his time at Westside, he has led the team to a remarkable 25-1 record and two consecutive state championships. In this episode, we will delve into Coach Limongi's journey, discussing the challenges and triumphs of transitioning from a successful program at Burke to a previously successful culture at Westside, and how he managed to merge the two. Moreover, we will explore the personal adversity Coach Limongi faced when he was diagnosed with a tumor on his tonsils. This earth-shattering news undoubtedly had a profound impact on his life and career. Join us as we explore Coach Paul Limongi's insights, experiences, and the valuable lessons he has learned throughout his coaching career and personal life on the Max Out Mindset podcast. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/492 Presented By: Smitty's Fly Box Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Today, Steve Smith, creator of Smitty's Fly Box, takes us through the journey of crafting one of the finest fly-tying boxes in the world. Steve recalls his childhood, a time when he had all-access to Indiana basketball in the 80s when his father was the assistant coach alongside the iconic coach Bobby Knight. From his family's relocation to Logan, Utah to establishing a fly shop and subsequent sourcing of fly-tying materials, Steve's story is as interesting as the flies he ties. He gives an insider look into his fly-tying companies, Round Rocks and Smitty's Fly Box. He also talks about his experiences teaching fly fishing at Utah State University, painting a vivid picture of his dynamic journey. Show Notes with Steve Smith on Smitty's Fly Box (02:00) Fly Fishing and Round Rocks - Steve got into fly fishing with his dad and grandpa when he was a kid, and his earliest memories of fishing for bluegill in Indiana. He shares his experience with the legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight when his dad was an assistant coach for Knight's championship team in 1987. Steve talks about what it was like to be around Indiana basketball in the 80s, and the big players on the team. He shares the story behind the founding of Round Rocks. (09:09) From Basketball to Fishing - Steve's passion for fly fishing was sparked by his dad and grandpa taking him fishing for bluegill when he was a kid. His dad then moved the family to Logan, Utah, and started a fly shop there. Steve and his dad made contact with a fly-tying factory in China and got a deal with Sportsman's Warehouse, a chain of 130 stores nationwide. They transitioned from the factory in China to the factory in Thailand and Steve stays connected with the people there. Steve also teaches fly fishing classes at Utah State University and has a new venture, Smitty's Fly Box. (20:57) Bobby Knight, Fly Fishing Influences - Steve's father was a basketball coach at a small school, West Side High School in Dayton, Idaho. Bobby Knight was hosting coaching clinics in the area and asked Steve's dad to take him fly fishing. Steve's dad obliged, drawing Bobby Knight a map of the area and taking him to the Madison River to fish. A few years later, when Bobby Knight won the NCAA National Championship in 1981, he called Steve's dad and asked him to be his assistant coach. They packed up and moved to Indiana, and Steve was six at the time. We also discuss Isaiah Thomas, one of the greatest point guards of all time, and how his time with Bobby Knight shaped him into a hard-nosed ball player. (32:33) - Fly Tying and Materials Discussion - We discuss the beginner and intermediate fly-tying boxes, the patterns they contain, and the materials we use. We explore the story of Whiting Farms, run by Tom Whiting, and how he has revolutionized hackle for dry flies. We also touch on our plans to transition and spread the word about our Round Rocks and Smitty's fly boxes. (45:49) - Exploring Rivers and Fly Tying - Steve's father plays an important role in his fly-fishing journey and his teaching. We discuss Steve's home water, the Logan River, and how it connects to Salt Lake. We also talk about the number of flies the company produces each year, which is in the millions. Lastly, we look at the evolution of fly fishing and how Steve's father is open to new ideas and techniques. Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/492

Good Morning it's Thursday June 10th, and this is The Wenatchee World's podcast, Slices of Wenatchee. Member SIPC and FINRA. - Now our feature story… WestSide High School had its 35th graduation Tuesday night, and for the first time the school hosted the ceremony in its own backyard. Sure, COVID protocols were the reason the ceremony was not happening at the normal place, but that's just fine with WestSide Principal Kory Kalahar. Certainly beats last year's graduation which was online. For 27 years, when WestSide was located at Wenatchee Valley College, it really didn't have a backyard, But the school is now at 1510 Ninth St. in Wenatchee. Kalahar says that they're starting a new tradition. And he showed his enthusiasm for this new tradition in a morning announcement with WestSide's Ms. Gretchen. Planning for the ceremony started in January. The students, parents and staff were polled to see what they wanted from graduation. The consistent theme was people wanted to do whatever we could collectively that was safe and would honor the class of 2021. WestSide has 100 graduating seniors this year. Each year, student speakers are selected to speak at graduation ceremonies. Initially, it is thrown out to the entire senior class. If no one volunteers, teachers and counselors have individual conversations with students to encourage them to think about it. This year, two student speakers were selected, Josh Welch and Evelyn Acosta. Acosta said it was an honor. Her speech is about the pandemic and how her teachers helped her. She said this past year has been difficult, having to learn online and find ways to connect with school. After high school, she hopes to travel abroad to make a difference and really find herself before choosing a career path. Josh Welch said being selected as student speaker is a cool opportunity. His speech is about perseverance. He said the past year has changed him. To him, it's been really hard. When COVID first happened, he was really social and he liked talking to a lot of people. He didn't like being by himself. But he feels that COVID helped him with that. Now, he's OK with who he is as a person. After high school, Welch plans to go to a trade school or a job where he can interact with people. Bonnie Orr is one of our featured columnists. Here's her advice for attracting birds to your yard this summer! In North Central Washington, more than 300 species of birds have been seen in various habitats. While Orr can't promise that you will attract all these birds to your backyard, you can still create an environment that lures dozens of types. The three most important considerations are water, food and a safe environment. In our dry climate, water will attract birds, especially running or dripping water. Birdbaths need to be shallow, or have rocks in the bottom. It's also important to clean the water every day. The birdbath also needs to be near a large shrub or hanging branches of a tree. Birds need a place to shake off the extra bath water and also a place to flee if a predator swoops into the area. Then - normally, bird feeders are used in late fall after a heavy frost, during the winter and in the very early spring. The rest of the year, your garden can provide the feast for the birds. Gentle or no use of pesticides allows for a bird buffet. Just remember that 95% of insects are beneficials; Most insects cause only cosmetic damage and do not kill plants. The Master Gardeners can share with you lots of ways to eliminate unwanted insect pests without resorting to pesticides. Besides insects, growing plants that provide fruit and seeds throughout the season create nearly all the food birds need. Orr grows Zinnias — lots of Zinnias. Pollinators love these plants, and hummingbirds drink the meager amounts of nectar. So, enjoy creating a “birdy” habitat. Now, some history… Did you know that the town of Trinidad was originally a railroad stop in the 1890's? Named by workers for the Great Northern Railway because of its geological similarity to Trinidad, Colorado, it was once a thriving boom town. There was a bank, a school, and a general store. While the site became what many considered to be a ghost town, it's becoming less of one. White Heron Cellars began there in the 1980s and more homes and businesses have been built. One other thing… There's the legend of Lost Trinidad Gold. A group of miners returning from Portland Oregon from British Columbia were attacked by Native Americans. Reportedly, they were able to hide the gold in the cliffs and escape. Many have looked for it over the years, some have claimed they found it, but the truth remains hidden. - Thanks for listening. This is the first episode of J Room with journalism advisers Jerred Zegelis and Tim Kaldahl. The podcast takes place at Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska. This audio provides a quick introduction and overview of what we hope the podcast will achieve in the future. Our goal is to post regularly (weekly?) with new information that is relevant, interesting, and (hopefully) amusing to teachers and staff connected to high school J programs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jroom/message

Today’s guests helps inner city kids change their view of possibility...and he started with Friday night hang outs and clean clothes. Akbar and I spoke about: How to educate with love and create relationships to move forward in life What change is possible even for kids who have never even known safety and security through vision and action Labels mean nothing- the sky is the limit when you have the right support Principal at West Side High School in Newark, NJ, Akbar Cook has worked to increase attendance and end violence within his community. He realized that students were missing school roughly 3 times a week because they were being made fun of for not having clean clothes. In response, he transformed the school’s locker room into a laundromat for students to clean their clothes for free, and attendance has increased. Additionally, due to violence in their community and the desire to keep his students or his “babies” as he likes to call them out of trouble, Akbar Cook created an after-school program that works to keep students off the street, encourage studying, and overall gives them a place free of violence. This is Part 2 of a 2-Part Episode. Akbar Cooke is a vice principal at West Side High School in Newark NJ, he's one in nearly 1mm K12 administrators in the country, but at West Side he's a giant. Kids call him "coach" or "Cooke" and straighten up when they see him. Not out of fear, but respect - the kind that if you've ever worked with teens, you know only comes when things are reciprocal, mutual - it's clear that his heart is as intimidating, in a way, as his physical presence. Everyone should walk the halls with Akbar, if you don't ask yourself "do I have the courage to love this much - to work this hard for the people around me?" then you're not human.Matt Greenfield is an venture capitalist. If you ask anyone who invests in technology for education, they know his name, and his company Rethink Education. Proper disclosure, Matt is a board member at Mouse, and he's a writer - he's one of the only people I know who's worked as a publishing poet who now manages investments. His intellect is enormous, and among the things he shares with Akbar, is heart. When a national EdTech publication, EdSurge asked Matt to write an editorial about the exciting prospects for EdTech in 2018 from an Investors Perspective, Matt too the opportunity to write about other technologies. He wrote "I find myself without strong enthusiasm for the task of writing a conventional set of predictions about education technology in 2018. The most urgent needs of the most vulnerable children in this nation involve other technologies. M: This nation is failing its most fundamental duty to children."A lot is covered in these two episodes, but all of the topics revolve around one single truth: that the prospects for how tech innovation in the US illuminates a path to meaning, and success and wealth is not the same for everyone.Marc is also joined by Tywan Jones - a senior at West Side and one of the wise-beyond-their-years and courageous teens who gives me hope for our future. We get into the failures of our current system, and the successes of a local leader, who along with an amazing team at West Side, is battling for every strategic position on the chess board. In episode two we get into the national walkout and gun violence, and whether kids in Newark NJ can safely "walk out" even if they chose to.A quick disclaimer, there are some disturbing images that come up in our conversation in these two episodes - so if there are sensitive ears nearby - you might save this one for your headphones. If you like this episode, subscribe to No Such Thing on iTunes, Stitcher, and Google Play.
