Our guest this week is a Craftsman and Artist! He began working with foam and fiberglass in the mid-sixties, establishing his own Surfboard label in 1968. He also had a side hustle designing art/logos air-spray apparel in high school, painted high-end motorcycles and even pinstriped new showroom cars for dealerships. He even played music and was in a Blues Band! He later became a Surf photographer for Surfing and Surfer Magazines. In 2001, he stepped out of professional photography taking a job with Al Merrick as a surfboard shaper. During this time, he seriously began pursuing fiberglass sculptures. His first fish was made in 2000 from a broken surfboard found on Banzai Beach in Oahu and now his artwork is in galleries and personal collections all over the world! It could have happened anytime, anywhere. But our guest's story takes place in Santa Barbara, California from 1980 to 1983. Four short years that saw a giant leap forward in the development of West Coast surfing, design, performance and image. It was set off by a rare combination of individuals, innovation and illumination, against a backdrop of some of the best seasons of surf in two decades.  Some have called this California's Halcyon Days. But many of us may not have known about this giant leap in surfing had it not been for a modest 19 year old Texan with a slight drawl who just moved to Santa Barbara in late 1979 to attend the highly regarded Brooks Institute for photography. The Texan would go on to document a period in surfing that would go on to reverberate in the surfing world for decades.  Our Guest Jimmy Metyko, from Houston, Texas, has maintained a multi-faceted, successful career path in fields of photography, art, graphic design, fashion design, brand creation, development and marketing by the application of one simple strategy: staying ahead of the curve. And in some cases, even designing the curve. We could go on and on about his accomplishments and career both in and out of surfing but, we're here to talk about a small slice of his life. His recently released book, Shaping Surf History, by Rizzoli Publishing, is out now and it documents a very special time and place in surfing. It is the Stuff of legend and lore. He documents the rise of a quiet and unassuming surfing savant, his mentor and shaper, a sudden arrival of a world Champion and a crew of surfers that would go on to shape the future of surfing. I am of course talking about Tom Curren, Al Merrick, Shaun Tomson and the Santa Barbara surf scene. Jimmy Metyko is our guest on this episode.  Learn more about your ad choices. The Channel Islands x Al Merrick 'Pod Mod' is a classic performance fish surfboard that helped revolutionize the shorter, wider surfboard shape towards what exists today. The original 'Pod' first came out in 2000 (23 years ago!) and has since been seen in all lineups. The Pod was later frankensteined into the Pod Mod in the Summer 2015 by the team at Al Merrick, and the epic fish shape with swallow tail turned up the performance a notch. Now the board was shorter, wider, and thicker. I've had a Pod or Pod Mod in my quiver for as long as I can remember, with numerous lengths of the board (5'6, 5'10, 6'2). The Torq Surfboards X-Lite version was also brought to market in recent years. In this surfboard review, I showcase a recent session with the 6'2 Torq version of the Pod Mod. Dimensions Length: 6'2" Width: 21 3/8" Thickness: 2 3/4" Volume: 40.5 We see how this beefier version rides - comparing the epoxy material to the PU. We also explain the pros and cons of the shape itself, and why it's become a fan favorite. I'm riding the Channel Islands Torq Pod Mod X-Lite as a twin, with Deflow Arin Fins and a rear Naked Vilking Surf (NVS) stabilizer. The Pod Mod has been with me everywhere, from Australia, to Indonesia, to Panama (shoutout Red Frog Bungalows) Thanks Surfline for the footage, plus Kevo & Rota for providing their shred skills during second half of the video. Thanks for watching this Hero's Journey Episode 127 About the Channel Islands Pod Mod: In 2000 the original Pod rapidly became a global favorite, allowing surfers to drop six inches off their shortboards and revolutionize punting. The Pod Mod design is a heavily modified Pod, designed to be ridden even shorter and wider than the original, catering to the surfer that wants a little more volume forward to catch waves but doesn't want to sacrifice performance. The tail has been widened for small wave glide, and the original single to double concave has been replaced with a flat entry to concave vee for quick rail to rail transitions. Experienced surfers ride this board 3”- 6” shorter than you are tall. About Torq X-Lite Surfboards: X-Lite is a Torq Epoxy technology developed specifically for performance boards. This is lighter, stronger and more Eco than a traditional PU/Polyester board, now with a 50% thinner Shield Skin for weight reduction. Britt Merrick grew up near Santa Barbara, Calif. in a little town on the beach named Carpinteria. In his childhood years Britt’s singular passion was surfing, and soon he was making surfboards along side his father (Al Merrick) at the Channel Islands, Inc. surfboard factory for some of the best surfers in the world. Britt was also handling the famous company’s advertising, marketing, and amateur surf team. Shortly after re-committing his life to the Lord in his early twenties Britt began to teach bible studies at his parent’s home for the surfer kids in Carpinteria. These bible studies eventually led to Britt teaching and preaching at a Friday night college ministry at a local church in Santa Barbara. In the fall of 2003, sensing a further call to ministry, he and his wife and some close friends started a church called Reality in his hometown of Carpinteria. Reality Carpinteria is active in, and passionate about: youth, community transformation, birthing other churches, sending missionaries overseas, and equipping the next generation of leaders.
