Depraved, brutal and callous: The murder of Yanfei Bao

A Moment In Crime

On June 13, Chinese national Tingjun Cao was jailed for life for the murder of Christchurch real estate agent and mother Yanfei Bao. Bao, 44, was stabbed to death in July 2023 and buried in a shallow grave on a farm outside Christchurch. She was not found for more than a year. The crime shocked New Zealand and this month on Herald podcast A Moment In Crime senior journalist and host Anna Leask tells the story of Yanfei and her killer. In this episode Leask goes inside the courtroom to Cao’s sentencing and you will hear from the detective who led the investigation into his awful offending. It is graphic in parts and may be upsetting. This podcast explores crime not for shock value, but for clarity — to understand what happened, why, and what it means. True crime is not entertainment — it's a responsibility. I tell crime stories with one goal in mind: to centre the victims, uncover the full story, and examine how justice is pursued — or denied. This episode was produced by Leask, NZME audio engineer Alastair Boyes and Ethan Sills. So far, 29 provinces have adopted the new gaokao mechanism.今年,又有八个省级地区将启动高考改革,其中包括:四川、河南、山西、云南、陕西、青海以及宁夏回族自治区和内蒙古自治区。截至目前,已有29个省份采用了新的高考机制。Under the reform, candidates must take three nationally standardized subjects — Chinese, mathematics and a foreign language — along with one primary elective subject, either physics or history, and two additional electives selected from chemistry, geography, political science and biology.根据新的改革方案,考生必须参加三门全国统一高考科目——语文、数学和一门外语——外加一门首选科目(物理或历史),以及从化学、地理、政治和生物中选出的两门再选科目。Xiong Bingqi, director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said the reform, launched in 2014, has provided students with greater flexibility in subject selection and aims to place more emphasis on students' individuality and personal interests while establishing a more comprehensive and multi-dimensional evaluation system.21世纪教育研究院院长熊丙奇表示,这项于2014年启动的改革为学生提供了更大的学科选择灵活性,旨在更注重学生的个体特质和个人兴趣,同时致力于建立一个更为综合性、多维度的评价体系。"However, the issue of solely relying on test scores persists.

You'll walk away from this episode with practical, easy-to-implement solutions that will help you detox your environment and build a home that supports vitality, longevity, and true wellness.   1. Formaldehyde in Your Home: The Silent Threat Formaldehyde is a common indoor air pollutant found in engineered wood products, cabinetry, moldings, countertops, and furniture. It is classified as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization and has been linked to respiratory issues, asthma, and even leukemia (Zhang et al., 2020). How to Reduce Formaldehyde Exposure:  Opt for solid wood furniture instead of pressed wood.  Use low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and finishes.  Keep your home well-ventilated with HEPA air purifiers.    2. The Hidden Dangers of PFAS (Forever Chemicals) PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are found in non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, waterproof clothing, and even drinking water. Studies show these chemicals accumulate in the body and are linked to cancer, hormonal imbalances, immune system suppression, and reproductive toxicity (DeWitt et al., 2019). How to Reduce PFAS Exposure:  Switch to cast iron or stainless steel cookware.  Avoid stain-resistant treatments on carpets and furniture.  Use water filters certified to remove PFAS.    3. Plastics: More Than Just an Environmental Issue Plastics release harmful chemicals like BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates, which disrupt the endocrine system, leading to infertility, metabolic disorders, and even neurological issues (Talsness et al., 2009).  How to Reduce Plastic Exposure:  Use glass or stainless steel containers.  Avoid microwaving food in plastic.  Choose BPA-free household products.    4. Carpets: A Reservoir of Toxins and Allergens Carpets harbor SVOCs (semi-volatile organic compounds), flame retardants, and pesticides, making them a major source of indoor air pollution and allergens. Children and pets are particularly vulnerable (Cao et al., 2017). How to Reduce Carpet-Related Risks:  Choose natural fiber rugs like wool or cotton.  Regularly clean with a HEPA vacuum.  Use non-toxic carpet cleaners.    5. Fragrances: The Airborne Toxins in Your Home Synthetic fragrances found in air fresheners, candles, cleaning products, and perfumes contain phthalates and VOCs that are linked to respiratory issues, migraines, and hormone disruption (Steinemann, 2018).  How to Detox Your Home's Air:  Use essential oil diffusers instead of synthetic air fresheners.  Choose fragrance-free cleaning products.  Improve indoor air quality with houseplants like peace lilies and spider plants.    SuperLife Home Detox: Steps to Create a Healthy Living Space Switch to Non-Toxic Cleaning Products – Avoid harsh chemicals; opt for vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils.  Improve Ventilation – Open windows daily and use HEPA air filters.  Filter Your Water – Invest in a high-quality water filtration system to remove PFAS, chlorine, and heavy metals.  Avoid Toxic Furniture and Decor – Choose organic bedding, non-toxic paint, and untreated wood furniture.  Ditch the Plastics – Use glass, stainless steel, or silicone alternatives for food storage and cookware.  Go Green with Personal Care Products – Check labels for parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.   Conclusion The reality is, our homes can be filled with hidden toxins that impact our health in ways we don't even realize. But the good news? We have the power to change that. By making small, intentional choices—like choosing cleaner products, improving ventilation, and ditching harmful plastics—you can create a SuperLife-approved home that truly supports your well-being. In Part 2, we start off talking about the significance of opening a Latinx-owned bookstore in the heart of the Mission, on 24th Street.   The folks who run Medicine for Nightmares call the entire space at 3036 24th Street—the bookstore in front and gallery in back—"The Portal." Josiah talks about the intention to utilize that gallery space to highlight art and artists in the Mission. The gallery is also often home to community group meetings, further solidifying its importance. That's my kind of mixed-use. In the three years that MfN has been open, they've hosted more than 800 events in the gallery.   To couch our discussion of how they choose which books to sell at Medicine for Nightmares, Josiah points out that the last time he checked, something like 75 or 80 percent of bookstores in the US are white-owned. He shares stories of sneaking out of his home in Marin when he was a teenager, driving to The City, and going to City Lights, which was open until midnight in those days. It was there, though, that Josiah discovered Latinx poets, writers who spoke his language, literally.   For him and his business partner, Tân Khánh Cao, it was always about wanting to see themselves reflected on the shelves. Josiah mentions a long-held, racist belief by publishers that Black and brown folks don't read. That, of course, is nonsense, and the bookstore stands with others in direct defiance and opposition to that mindset.   On their first day of business, Josiah says that a young mom came in with her kid and went to the children's books section of the store. He and Tân noticed that she was crying, so they went over to see if everything was OK. "I've never been in a bookstore before and seen a kids' book that looks like my kid," she told them. That was the first day.   We then turn to the story of how they came up with the name of the store. Joshia and Tân were throwing out potential names to each other out front on the sidewalk one day before they opened. "Each one of us was coming up with a worse name than the other," he says, half-jokingly. One of them suggested looking at titles from Sun-Ra, a musician they both like. One of his songs is called "Medicine for a Nightmare." It clicked for them instantly.   Then we talk about the growing call to ban books in the US. In my opinion, simply opening for business and turning the lights on is an act of defiance for Josiah and Tân. He goes on to state that they're well aware that they could be shut down and/or arrested every day. He says they get harassing phone calls from time to time, in fact.   We end the episode with Josiah's thoughts about our theme on Storied: San Francisco this season—Keep It Local.   Medicine for Nightmares 3036 24th Street Sunday 12-9pm / Monday 12:30-9 pm Tuesday–Thursday 12:30-10pm Friday 12:30-11pm Saturday 12-11pm @medicinefornightmares (415) 824-1761   Photography by Mason J.

Painting US Empire: Nineteenth-Century Art and Its Legacies (University of Chicago Press, 2025) by Dr. Maggie Cao is the first book to offer a synthetic account of art and US imperialism around the globe in the nineteenth century. In this work, art historian Dr. Cao crafts a nuanced portrait of nineteenth-century US painters' complicity with and resistance to ascendant US imperialism, offering eye-opening readings of canonical works, landscapes of polar expeditions and tropical tourism, still lifes of imported goods, genre paintings, and ethnographic portraiture. Revealing how the US empire was “hidden in plain sight” in the art of this period, Dr. Cao examines artists including Frederic Edwin Church and Winslow Homer who championed and expressed ambivalence toward the colonial project. She also tackles the legacy of US imperialism, examining Euro-American painters of the past alongside global artists of the present. Pairing each chapter with reflections on works by contemporary anticolonial artists including Tavares Strachan, Nicholas Galanin, and Yuki Kihara, Dr. Cao addresses important contemporary questions around representation, colonialism, and indigeneity. This book foregrounds an underacknowledged topic in the study of nineteenth-century US art and illuminates the ongoing ecological and economic effects of the US empire. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party, loving Jesus makes Christians “unpatriotic.” Bob Fu, founder and president of China Aid, explains: “[The communists believe] you cannot love your country and love Jesus.” Absolute government control of churches and other religious institutions continues to tighten in China as persecuted Christians are unwilling to comply with the doctrines of the Communist Party, which is expanding efforts to “Sinicize” the church. Listen to hear how pastors and church leaders are now being charged with fraud or other financial crimes, rather than charges relating to religion. Bob Fu, author of God's Double Agent, will also share an update on John Cao, who was released from prison last year but still is not free. The CCP continues to watch Cao's every move, yet he continues to serve the Lord through a house church, daily prayer meetings, and a small Bible school — even baptizing new believers despite constant surveillance! Pastor Wang Yi is now six years into his nine-year prison sentence. Like Richard Wurmbrand, who founded The Voice of the Martyrs and wrote hundreds of sermons in his head during his 14 years in prison, Wang Yi has written three books in prison. Wang also continues to pray daily through more than a thousand items on his prayer list. If you'd like to write letters of encouragement to Christian prisoners or petition their governments, go to www.PrisonerAlert.com. Listen as Bob Fu shares how he stays personally encouraged despite constantly hearing of the sufferings of our spiritual family in China. He also suggests specific ways to pray for our Chinese Christian brothers and sisters. The Voice of the Martyrs recently launched a new, daily podcast; Extreme Devotion is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts. The VOM App for your smartphone or tablet will help you pray daily for persecuted Christians throughout the year, as well as giving free access to e-books, audio books, video content and feature films. Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas

It's the end of the year, and time for our annual holiday break here at Mindscape. But as usual, we wrap up with a Holiday Message. This year, inspired by Joni Mitchell's "Hits" and "Misses" albums, I go through my scientific papers and talk about some of my favorites -- some of which were hits, in terms of making an impact on subsequent research, and some of which were misses by that standard. But I love them all! It's an excuse to talk about process -- how papers come to be, from the initial informal idea to sitting down and doing the work.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2024/12/23/holiday-message-hits-and-misses/Here are links to the papers I discuss in the episode.S.M.
