100 công chức, nghệ nhân, chủ doanh nghiệp tham gia trùng tu Nhà thờ Đức Bà Notre-Dame de Paris được tổng thống Pháp Emmanuel Macron trao tặng huân chương ghi công ngày 15/04/2025. Họ nằm trong số hàng nghìn nhân viên, nghệ nhân tham gia vào dự án “điên rồ” trong vòng 5 năm. Năm năm cũng cho thấy sức mạnh của tập thể, tình tương ái và tay nghề, kỹ năng của những nghệ nhân Pháp. Một trăm người thợ được trao Huân chương Bắc Đẩu Bội Tinh (Légion d'Honneur) hoặc Huân chương Công trạng (Médaille de l'Ordre du Mérites) - hai loại huy chương trang trọng nhất của Pháp. Tự hào trào dâng và họ không giấu được xúc động, như ông Philippe Mouton, người lập kế hoạch công trường, khi trả lời nhà báo RFI Tom Malki : “Nhiều lúc người ta gọi chúng tôi là những người xây nhà thờ lớn. Chúng tôi đoàn kết, gắn bó với mục tiêu và điều đó thật tuyệt. Nhưng tôi cũng nghĩ là mình chưa hoàn thiện hết điều mà chúng tôi làm”. Còn đối với Waziz Abrousse, phụ trách phòng cháy : “Đây là một ngày đặc biệt đối với chúng tôi. Khi tôi tới Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris, ba tháng sau vụ cháy, là cả một đống tro tàn. Hiện giờ thì đó là thử thách đẹp nhất thế giới. Tôi rất tự hào, tự hào vì đã trùng tu Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris”.Sức mạnh của tập thể và lòng hảo tâmKhi thông báo quyết tâm trùng tu Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris trong vòng 5 năm, tổng thống Pháp Emmanuel Macron đã khiến mọi người bất ngờ, thậm chỉ có phần chỉ trích vì quá “lạc quan” nếu nhìn vào khối lượng công việc. Nhưng mục tiêu đã hoàn thành ! Hàng nghìn nghệ nhân, đội ngũ kỹ thuật, thiết kế, thi công đã giúp Nhà Thờ Đức Bà Paris rực rỡ hơn cả trước đây. Rất nhiều ngành nghề thủ công cổ và có nguy cơ biến mất, được phục hồi và được đề cao trong công trường trùng tu.Trả lời RFI, ông Philippe Jost, chủ tịch tổ chức công Rebâtir Notre-Dame (Tái thiết Nhà thờ Đức Bà), nhận định :“Thành công này là thành công của người Pháp, là niềm tự hào của người Pháp. Vì thế, thật tuyệt vời khi được có mặt tại điện Élysée ngày hôm nay. Mọi người đều nói là đã sống được cuộc phiêu lưu của đời mình. Chúng tôi đã có được cuộc phiêu lưu chỉ một lần trong đời, có lẽ chúng tôi sẽ không bao giờ được trải nghiệm lại điều gì đó ý nghĩa đến như vậy. Họ đều nói như vậy, họ sống như vậy. Và điều tuyệt vời là trải nghiệm đó mang tính tập thể. Sẽ có ít nhân viên trên công trường hơn trước. Có nhiều ngành nghề đã dời khỏi công trường, nhưng dù sao, chúng tôi vẫn tiếp tục theo đúng tinh thần trước đây, trong không gian làm việc hài hòa và đó chính là điều mà Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris xứng đáng được hưởng”.Khôi phục giá trị, đề cao ngành nghề thủ côngCó đến 2.000 người tham gia trùng tu Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris. Cả một “Thế hệ Nhà thờ Đức Bà - Génération Notre-Dame”, theo lời phát biểu của tổng thống Pháp, “đã cho thế giới thấy rằng không gì có thể cưỡng lại được sự táo bạo, ý chí, sự chăm chỉ và hy vọng”.“Vào ngày 15/04/2019, Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris đã bị tấn công, được giải cứu và kể từ ngày đó, chúng ta bắt đầu xây dựng lại nhà thờ. Và nếu chúng ta ở đây đêm nay, đó là nhờ tinh thần anh hùng của những người lính cứu hỏa, tấm lòng hào phóng của tất cả các nhà tài trợ và tổ chức đã tham gia vào nỗ lực này, nhờ tài năng và sự cống hiến của hàng nghìn nghệ nhân, bạn đồng hành, chuyên gia, cũng như rất nhiều dân biểu và công dân. Có hàng nghìn người đã tham gia công trình và tối nay có 100 người cùng gia đình và người thân mà tôi chào đón ở đây”.Họ làm việc 24/24 giờ, 6/7 ngày. Tất cả có chung tâm nguyện : Khôi phục lại ngôi nhà tâm linh và tinh thần gắn bó với người dân Pháp, phủ đầy tro và than sau trận hỏa hoạn ngày 15/04/2029 và tưởng như sắp sập. Rất nhiều người trong số này làm những nghề hiếm hoặc ít được biết đến, như thợ mộc truyền thống, thợ xây đá, để tái thiết các mái vòm và mái vòm theo kiến trúc gothic, thợ làm kính để phục hồi các cửa sổ kính màu thế kỷ 13…, nhiều nghề như đẽo gỗ bằng rìu như được hồi sinh từ thời Trung cổ. Trước dự án này, nhiều nghề đã bị mai một do thiếu các dự án quy mô lớn. Trong bài diễn văn, tổng thống Pháp Macron đã cảm ơn từng ngành nghề tham gia công trường đặc biệt này.“(…) Xin cảm ơn tất cả thợ mộc, thợ mộc nghệ thuật, thợ lát sàn gỗ, thợ phục chế đồ khảm, người làm nghề lâm nghiệp, thợ cưa, thợ xẻ gỗ và đá, thợ làm khung mái, thợ làm dụng cụ cắt, đôi khi đã phát minh lại chúng, đến từ thời xa xưa. Bằng cách khôi phục lại cánh rừng (khung mái nhà thờ), bằng cách dựng mũi tên hướng lên bầu trời, các bạn đã giúp định hướng lại cho rất nhiều người trong chúng ta. Cảm ơn thợ bọc ghế, họa sĩ và thợ phục chế tranh. Các bạn đã khôi phục lại vẻ huy hoàng của các nhà nguyện và đất nước chúng ta. Xin cảm ơn những người thợ mạ vàng, thợ đúc, thợ rèn, thợ khóa, thợ làm đồng thau, thợ làm đèn chùm, các nhà thiết kế đồ nội thất phụng vụ, nhà thiết kế ánh sáng, các bạn đã cho thấy rằng Nhà thờ Đức Bà được thể hiện trong từng chi tiết. Xin cảm ơn những người chế tạo đàn organ, thợ làm chuông, chuyên gia âm thanh, các bạn đã tái tạo sự hòa hợp giữa hữu hình và vô hình. Xin cảm ơn những bậc thầy làm thủy tinh đến từ khắp nước Pháp, các bạn đã cứu con ngươi của nhà thờ. Xin cảm ơn những người thợ lợp mái và thợ làm ngọn tháp. Các bạn đã thể hiện xứng đáng với quá khứ của đất nước chúng ta. Và tôi không quên những người thợ giàn giáo, những người vận hành cần cẩu, những người leo dây thách thức cả định luật hấp dẫn, những chuyên gia kỹ thuật và điện, những kỹ sư, thợ điện, chuyên gia về phòng cháy, cung cấp năng lượng (…)”.“Hiệu ứng Nhà thờ Đức Bà”Dự án đã giúp nhiều thanh niên được học nghề từ các nghệ nhân bậc thầy, theo tinh thần truyền nối giữa các thế hệ ngay trên công trường Nhà thờ Đức Bà. Alexandre Gougeon là một ví dụ, theo lời kể với RFI của người mẹ được mời dự lễ trao huân chương : “Chính cháu là người phụ trách chuông của Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris, có tám quả chuông. Mỗi mùa hè, cháu đến làm việc ở tháp chuông cùng cha và những người công nhân. Chúng tôi vừa thăm Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris về và tôi cùng cháu đến xem những quả chuông đó. Tôi nói với cháu : Hoan hô, thật tuyệt vời, đây chắc chắn là dự án đẹp nhất trong cuộc đời con”.Và thành công của dự án có một không hai còn tạo “hiệu ứng Nhà thờ Đức Bà”. Theo một báo cáo được Viện Cao cấp Ngành nghề (Institut supérieur des métiers) công bố ngày 03/12/2024, số lượng người học việc trong các ngành nghề nghệ thuật di sản, ví dụ nghề mộc và thợ nề công trình cổ, đã tăng đáng kể từ năm 2018 đến năm 2023, cụ thể số lượng thợ mộc học việc tăng 44% và tăng gần gấp đôi đối với thợ xây công trình cũ hoặc thợ kẽm. Ngoài ra, những nghề chuyên biệt như thợ chế tạo đàn organ và thợ làm cửa sổ kính màu, thường có vài chục người theo học hàng năm, đã tăng lên gấp đôi, thậm chí nhiều hơn, chỉ trong vòng 5 năm.Thực ra, ngành nghề thủ công đã có một đợt cải cách lớn vào năm 2018 và được hưởng các khoản trợ cấp tuyển dụng lớn để thu hút học viên. Số lượng học viên trong tất cả các ngành cộng lại ở Pháp đã tăng gần gấp ba lần : từ 317.000 vào năm 2017 lên 853.000 vào năm 2023. Số lượng thợ lợp mái học việc (+23% từ năm 2018 đến năm 2023), thợ làm tủ (+31%) và thợ xây đá (+40%) cũng tăng đáng kể.Và thành công này phần nào là nhờ có thêm “hiệu ứng Notre-Dame”, khiến giới trẻ quan tâm hơn tới nghề thủ công và di sản. Công trình cũng giúp thay đổi cách công chúng nhìn nhận các hoạt động thủ công, thường bị đánh giá thấp. Trả lời AFP, bà Catherine Elie, giám đốc Viện Cao cấp Ngành nghề - một trung tâm nghiên cứu và cung cấp nguồn lực về nghề thủ công và các doanh nghiệp nhỏ do Nhà nước thành lập, cho rằng “Notre-Dame đã giúp nói rất nhiều về những nghề sáng tạo và những nghề nghệ thuật này”.Những “người hùng văn hóa” đã để lại cho công chúng sự thán phục khi tham quan Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris. Màu vàng óng của những viên đá được lau chùi sạch sẽ, màu sắc tươi sáng của những ô cửa sổ kính màu được phục chế một phần, ánh sáng được bài trí để tăng thêm màu sắc của những họa tiết trang trí trong các nhà nguyện, 1.500 ghế sồi được thiết kế để phục vụ từ 14 đến 15 triệu du khách hàng năm.Công việc thầm lặng của hơn 2.000 người trong suốt 5 năm được lưu lại trong những bức ảnh, thước phim. Tổ chức Rebâtir Notre-Dame cung cấp miễn phí dưới dạng pdf cho mọi tổ chức, cơ quan, địa phương muốn tổ chức triển lãm và mở cửa miễn phí cho công chúng về công trình phục dựng Nhà thờ Đức Bà Paris qua 9 chủ đề và qua đó, khách tham quan có thể khám phá khoảng 20 ngành nghề tiêu biểu.

In Part 2, we start off talking about the significance of opening a Latinx-owned bookstore in the heart of the Mission, on 24th Street.   The folks who run Medicine for Nightmares call the entire space at 3036 24th Street—the bookstore in front and gallery in back—"The Portal." Josiah talks about the intention to utilize that gallery space to highlight art and artists in the Mission. The gallery is also often home to community group meetings, further solidifying its importance. That's my kind of mixed-use. In the three years that MfN has been open, they've hosted more than 800 events in the gallery.   To couch our discussion of how they choose which books to sell at Medicine for Nightmares, Josiah points out that the last time he checked, something like 75 or 80 percent of bookstores in the US are white-owned. He shares stories of sneaking out of his home in Marin when he was a teenager, driving to The City, and going to City Lights, which was open until midnight in those days. It was there, though, that Josiah discovered Latinx poets, writers who spoke his language, literally.   For him and his business partner, Tân Khánh Cao, it was always about wanting to see themselves reflected on the shelves. Josiah mentions a long-held, racist belief by publishers that Black and brown folks don't read. That, of course, is nonsense, and the bookstore stands with others in direct defiance and opposition to that mindset.   On their first day of business, Josiah says that a young mom came in with her kid and went to the children's books section of the store. He and Tân noticed that she was crying, so they went over to see if everything was OK. "I've never been in a bookstore before and seen a kids' book that looks like my kid," she told them. That was the first day.   We then turn to the story of how they came up with the name of the store. Joshia and Tân were throwing out potential names to each other out front on the sidewalk one day before they opened. "Each one of us was coming up with a worse name than the other," he says, half-jokingly. One of them suggested looking at titles from Sun-Ra, a musician they both like. One of his songs is called "Medicine for a Nightmare." It clicked for them instantly.   Then we talk about the growing call to ban books in the US. In my opinion, simply opening for business and turning the lights on is an act of defiance for Josiah and Tân. He goes on to state that they're well aware that they could be shut down and/or arrested every day. Revealing how the US empire was “hidden in plain sight” in the art of this period, Dr. Cao examines artists including Frederic Edwin Church and Winslow Homer who championed and expressed ambivalence toward the colonial project. She also tackles the legacy of US imperialism, examining Euro-American painters of the past alongside global artists of the present. A rally on Tuesday was held in support of 12 janitors who are going to their jobs at Alderney Gate on March 1st. This happened after the HRM council selected a new, non-union contractor, Imperial Cleaners. Service Employees International Union Local 2 that represents 20,000 workers around Canada were calling on HRM mayor, council and CAO to require Imperial to hire these janitors. Tina Oh, an organizer and coordinator with the union, spoke with our colleague Meig Campbell. A statement from the city to CBC says: On Feb. 28, 2025, the Halifax Regional Municipality received notice that a judicial review has been filed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2 on the matter of janitorial services for Alderney Gate. As this matter is now before the courts, no additional information or comment is available at this time.

In this JCO Article Insights episode, Peter Li summarizes “Neoadjuvant Modified Infusional Fluorouracil, Leucovorin, and Oxaliplatin With or Without Radiation Versus Fluorouracil Plus Radiation for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer: Updated Results of the FOWARC Study After a Median Follow-Up of 10 Years,” by Dr. Jianwei Zhang et al. published on December 13, 2024. TRANSCRIPT Peter Li: Hello and welcome to the JCO Article Insights. I'm your host Peter Li and today we will be discussing the Journal of Clinical Oncology article, “Neoadjuvant Modified Infusional Fluorouracil, Leucovorin, and Oxaliplatin With or Without Radiation Versus Fluorouracil Plus Radiation for Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer: Updated Results of the FOWARC Study After a Median Follow-Up of 10 Years,” by Dr. Jianwei Zhang et al.  For a reminder to the audience, the FOWARC study is a Chinese-based study that looked into the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancers with neoadjuvant chemotherapy based regimens with or without radiation. This study was first published back in 2019 where the three-year data showed no difference in three-year disease-free survival over survival between the three study arms. As a reminder of what those arms were, there were one historical control and two interventional arms. The control arm used 5-FU with radiation therapy with five cycles of 5-fluorouracil with radiation during cycles two to four followed by surgery and then seven cycles adjuvantly. Their first interventional arm was the same as the control arm with the addition of oxaliplatin on day 1of each cycle. And lastly, the third arm was FOLFOX only for four to six cycles followed by surgery and then six to eight cycles adjuvantly completing about a total of 12 weeks of chemotherapy.  They recruited about 495 patients with 165 patients randomized to each arm. They were relatively well balanced by age, clinical staging and distance from the anal verge. Median age was about mid-50s with a slight male predominance and patients were primarily stage 3 with 20% to 30% being stage 2. About 30% had clinical T4 disease and about 25% had clinical N2 disease. Median follow up time was 122.5 months or 10 years and their follow up endpoints were disease-free survival, overall survival and local recurrence, and they also performed subgroup analyses based on post surgical pathological staging. Survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier method with a significant threshold of p being less than 0.05. About 451 patients actually underwent surgery, which is about 91% of patients. The main reason for not going through surgery was due to refusal but one was due to toxicity and two were due to disease progression in the control arm. Follow up loss rate was about 10% in each group. Now looking at their primary endpoints in their initial study, local recurrence was about 8.8% in the control arm versus 7.9% in the FOLFOX radiation group versus 9.2% in the FOLFOX only group. Distant metastasis was about 30% in each arm and the sites of metastases were primarily in the lung and liver.   Now, following up with 10 years, there were only three new events in the chemoradiation group with local recurrence happening at 10.8% in the control arm versus 8% in the FOLFOX RT group versus 9.6% in the chemo only group. These findings were not statistically significant. In their subgroup analysis by pathological staging, they found that pathological CR or complete response had a lower rate of local recurrence compared to those with increasing pathological staging coming in at 3% versus 4.3% versus 11.6% versus 15.8% in pCR versus Stage 1, 2, 3 respectively. And they found no difference in each stage with each interventional arm. Looking at long term survival their 10-year disease free survival showed 52.5% in the 5-FU radiation group versus 62.6% in the FOLFOX RT group versus 60.5% in the chemotherapy only group with no statistically significant difference between three groups. By pathological staging, they found improved 10-year disease survival in those who achieved pathological complete response versus those who did not with 84.3% in the pCR group versus 78.7% versus 56.8% versus 27.7% in the stage 1 versus 2 versus 3 group. And again they found no statistical significance difference between each arm.   Now looking at the 10-year overall survival rates between the three arms, in the control arm the 10-year overall survival was 65.9% versus 72.3% in the FOLFOX RT group versus 73.4% in the chemo only group. By pathological stage, again, they showed a statistically significant difference in those who achieved pCR versus those who had pathological stage 1 to 3 disease with overall survival being 92.4% in those who achieved pCR versus 84.9% versus 68.6% versus 48.8% in stage 1, 2, 3 respectively. Now in the discussion, authors mentioned that with a median follow up of 10 years, FOLFOX alone had similar disease-free survival, local recurrence and distant metastasis and overall survival compared to those who received neoadjuvant chemoradiation, justifying the omission of radiation without compromising results or outcomes for each patient. There were no differences in subgroup analysis for disease free survival local recurrence or overall survival based on pathological staging. There were only three new events compared to the last follow up, with local recurrence happening only in the chemo radiation groups. Local recurrence rates at 10 years was about 10%. Compared to other clinical trials such as CAO, ARO or AIO-94, the rate of local recurrence was similar to those historical trials.  The authors also compared their findings to the PROSPECT study which looks at the use of total neoadjuvant chemo radiation versus chemotherapy alone, which boasted only about a 2% local recurrence rate. But as a reminder, high risk locally advanced rectal cancers were excluded, mainly those with T4 or N2 disease, which may explain the difference in terms of local recurrence in the PROSPECT versus this study. Another finding is that pathological complete responses are also an important prognostic marker with lower 10-year local recurrence rate, disease-free survival and overall survival with worse outcomes with increased pathological staging. Distant metastasis rates were still at 30%, with the most common site being lung then liver then lymph nodes consistent with other historical studies. Chemotherapy seemed to be better at reducing liver mets than lung metastasis per their findings. In their post hoc analysis of their own study, chemo radiation was also associated with higher incidence of low anterior resection syndrome and persistent ostomy compared to chemotherapy alone, meaning that they had better quality of life with the chemotherapy only approach.  In conclusion, a chemotherapy only approach can be safe and a feasible treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer without compromising outcomes. Omission of radiation may reduce the risk of overtreatment and improve quality of life for some of these patients. However, this does not necessarily exclude the role of radiation as it may still play a role in a response escalation approach for those who do not respond to chemotherapy alone.   This wraps up today's episode. The past few weeks have been busy ones for Leaving Cert students, with mock exams taking place. As we are now in pre-exam season, with our future graduates making their all-important CAO decisions, an important thing to consider is transferable skills. Transferable skills – or “power skills” – are becoming more desirable in graduates and the future workforce. What makes these skills so key is that they are “human” skills that cannot be replicated by A.I. - or Artificial Intelligence. This means someone with transferable skills has a significant advantage in the job market.
