Welcome to Episode #63 of The Thermal. I'm your host Herrie ten Cate. In this Episode of The Thermal, fire in the air. Possibly the worst thing that can happen to any pilot. Well, that happened to me on May 23rd of this year. The glider caught fire during the climb. My training and Lady Luck got me back to the runway with a burning glider This is the story of what happened.
In this episode of I Learned About Flying From That, host Rob Reider speaks with Terry Fagg from Queensland, Australia, who shares a compelling story about a significant equipment failure during a solo glider flight in 1979. Terry was just 15 years old at the time, with about 30 total flying hours. He was flying an ASW15, a high-performance competition glider known for being state-of-the-art but also having some quirks that made it "not real easy to fly". While climbing to altitude in a strong thermal, Terry noticed the stick was progressively getting further forward until it became stuck full forward. This left him unable to push forward to descend and flying dangerously close to a stall speed at around 7,000 feet. Finding himself in "deep deep strife" with virtually no pitch control, Terry spent about two hours at altitude, floating in thermals and figuring out how to fly the glider in this precarious state. Standard stall recovery procedures were impossible with the stick stuck forward, and radio assistance was unavailable. He managed to return to his gliding club's field and executed a challenging "long low slow circuit," making a difficult landing by basically "flopping in" close to the ground. Initially criticized by the duty instructor for his landing, the severity of the emergency was revealed when, while examining the stick, the damaged elevator link strut – a metal control rod that had failed due to fatigue – finally snapped off completely, showing the elevator was no longer connected. Terry later learned that he was the only person known to have successfully landed an ASW15 with this specific failure; other instances had resulted in serious crashes. The incident profoundly taught him at a young age that flying, despite being enjoyable, is also a "dangerous business" where unexpected events can occur. He learned the critical importance of trusting his gut feeling when something feels wrong and adhering to aircraft manual procedures. This episode is brought to you by Amco Insurance.
THE CLIMATE ACTION SHOWProduced by Vivien Langford and Bella JessonMay 5th 2025THE GREATER GLIDER Protect our ForestsandNO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET While the state Environment Minister is asleep in her bed at night, forest protectors are out in the dark, on tough terrain, with torches trying to locate greater glider nesting trees. The law says the loggers must avoid parts of the forest where there is evidence that this is glider habitat, but loggers go out in the daytime to find the nocturnal gliders and say they can find none. Should the concerned community really being doing their job for them? While the Federal Environment Minister wants to see no extinctions on her watch and is running for re election, the greater glider is on the endangered list and its habitat is being logged in QLD and NSW. Should she really be allowed to get away with this?https://science.anu.edu.au/news-events/news/new-logging-rules-nsw-put-greater-glider-closer-extinction-when-will-we-startAnd in case you are wondering what saving the glider can do to buffer us against the worst of global heating:At UN Climate Change Conferences (COPs), forest protection is a key focus, with a strong emphasis on halting and reversing deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. These efforts are crucial for both climate mitigation and adaptation, as forests play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide and providing numerous ecosystem services. She was the 12th arrest in the local community's campaign to protect the Bulga forest.Ms Russell had attached herself to the giant logging machinery until she was cut off.‘Every hour those machines don't work is 50 trees saved,' she said. ‘Our community will throw itself at the machines for as long as we can. We don't want to give up any chance to save this precious forest and the Greater Gliders and Koalas that live there.Susie Russell locked on in Bulga State Forest. That is the most straightforward and cheapest way to make progress.‘Removing hundreds of thousands of trees from the top of the catchment is insanity,' said Ms Russell.‘The trees hold the land together. When the intense rain events come and the soil washes downstream, and the rivers silt up and the floods are extreme, no doubt those currently overseeing the destruction will wring their hands and lament.‘I am sickened at the inertia of the environment departments and their ministers, at state and federal level. They have no vision, and no appetite for action. They are keeping their seats warm while their support base evaporates and the damage intensifies.‘Those of us putting ourselves in arrestable situations trying to stop the carnage, would much rather be planting trees or running youth programs or removing weeds. A Northern Irish public transport service dubbed "The luas on wheels" has been proposed as a cost effective alternative to the Shannon Rail Link. The 'Glider' which is a rapid transit intercity bus system, with a light tram design and capacity for over 100 passengers in a single carriage, was first rolled out in Belfast in 2018 at a cost of €120m. Although the Government has set a target of providing rail connectivity to Shannon Airport by 2030, a delegation of elected representatives and officials are expected to visit Belfast to test the Glider's feasibility. Clonlara Independent Councillor Michael Begley is confident it can work here.

Summary In this episode of the Humans vs Retirement podcast, I interview Bill Bengen, the pioneer of the 4% safe withdrawal strategy, who shares insights from his extensive research on retirement income strategies. Bill discusses the evolution of the 4% safe withdrawal rate, revealing that the worst-case scenario may now be closer to 5%. He emphasises the importance of diversification, glider path investing, and rebalancing in enhancing withdrawal rates. The conversation also delves into the risks of inflation and the significance of understanding personal inflation rates in retirement planning. Bill concludes with thoughts on the current market environment and the future of retirement planning. Takeaways Bill Bengen's research has evolved the 4% rule to a 5% worst-case scenario. Only one out of 400 retirees in Bengen's database faced the 5% withdrawal rate. Diversification across multiple asset classes is crucial for sustainable withdrawals. Glider path investing can significantly enhance retirement income. Rebalancing portfolios regularly is essential to avoid overexposure to equities. Sequence of inflation risk poses a significant threat to retirees. Personal inflation rates often exceed government-reported figures. Retirement spending tends to decrease in real terms over time. Many retirees fear running out of money more than death itself. Current market conditions are unique and require careful planning. Sound Bites "The 4% rule has evolved to a 5% worst case." "Only one out of 400 retirees hit the 5% mark." "Diversification is key to higher withdrawal rates." In this Episode of The Thermal, we're devoting a full show to the story of WW2 British combat Glider Pilot Frank Hughes and his role in Operation Market Garden…also known as the Battle of Arnhem. It's a remarkable tale of a young man who flew a fully loaded HORSA combat glider into a war zone and survived the ensuing battle.
This week we discuss the role of RAF bomber aircraft as glider tugs in the Arnhem airlift and airborne operations. We're joined by Matt Yates, the Chief Operations Officer for the Vickers Machine Gun Collection and Research Association, and owner of the Chalk Glider Pilot Regiment Collection.Matt provides insight into the formation of the Glider Pilot Regiment, highlighting the close collaboration between glider pilots, and their tug crews, who were normally seconded from Bomber Squadrons. We debate the challenges and successes of various airborne operations, including Operations Freshman, Husky, and Tonga. We go on to discuss Operation Market Garden - a complex and ambitious plan to secure a foothold in Germany by capturing key bridges in the Netherlands and paving the way for a rapid advance into Germany. However, the operation faced challenges, including the loss of the element of surprise, intelligence issues, overconfidence, and a shortage of aircraft. The glider pilot regiment and their bomber crew tugs played a crucial role in transporting troops and supplies, but faced heavy anti-aircraft fire and suffered significant casualties. We also discuss the supply role of transport command. The operation ultimately fell short of its objectives, highlighting the difficulties and risks of large-scale airborne operations.Links:Arnhem: Myth & Reality, by Sebastian RitchieJane's article: Bring Up The Piat!Matt's recommendations:Glider Pilots at Arnhem by Mike Peters and Luuk Buist. In World War II, there were no C-130s or large cargo aircraft that could deliver heavy equipment– such as a truck or artillery piece – in advance of an airborne invasion. For that, you needed to put that equipment, along with its crew, in a glider. These were unpowered boxes of plywood, pulled by a towing plane into enemy territory by a single cable wrapped with telephone wire. The men who flew on gliders were all volunteers, for a specialized duty that their own government projected would have a 50 percent casualty rate. In every major European invasion of the war they led the way. They landed their gliders ahead of the troops who stormed Omaha Beach, and sometimes miles ahead of the paratroopers bound for the far side of the Rhine River in Germany itself. From there, they had to hold their positions. They delivered medical teams, supplies and gasoline to troops surrounded in the Battle of the Bulge, ahead even of Patton's famous supply truck convoy. These all-volunteer glider pilots played a pivotal role from the day the Allies invaded Occupied Europe to the day Germany finally surrendered. Yet the story of these anonymous heroes is virtually unknown. To explore these stories with us is today's guest, Scott McGaugh, author of “Brotherhood of the Flying Coffin: The Glider Pilots of World War II.”

Not Just the First Time on the Sky Glider by STAR 102.5/Des Moines
My Bloody Valentine were a great band from the start, but the 1990 Glider EP broke their floodgates open, as Kevin Shields turned the band's mix of thick guitars, heavy bass, pounding drums, and heavenly vocals into a soundworld of its own. After a little bit of a summer hiatus, Marc Masters (author of High Bias: The Distorted History of the Cassette Tape) and John Howard (Nice Breeze, Many Spaceships Studio) submerge themselves in the 7-inch version, "Soon" b/w "Glider," on the latest episode of The Spindle.Call us anytime at 1-877-WASTOIDS.
