Steve says that you don't have to be the next Zuckerberg to find great success. All it takes to run a flourishing company (startup or otherwise) is to adopt a few common actions, attitudes, and behaviors that will breed innovation and maximize success. In this episode, Steve shares some of those key steps to follow and how to follow them, from challenging the status quo to working up the courage to make tough decisions to address the elephant in the room (or Zoom call!). Although Steve has learned the importance of all of this through his work with startups, his tips can be applied to any business, so this is a great episode no matter what industry you work in or where you're at in your entrepreneurship journey. In this episode:[2:24] Steve tells us a little bit about his background and his journey as a serial entrepreneur in the tech startup world.[4:39] Steve shares his tips for success, including challenging the status quo, find the courage to make tough decisions, and address the elephant in the room. [9:27] Steve explains how hiring a great team is key to running a great business. [12:56] Steve breaks down how to go about making a big change within your startup when people may be apprehensive: explain why you're doing it in a very clear way, create specific objectives, and follow up. Support the show (https://jeffmendelson.com/onebigtip)

Real Life Healing

In this episode we talk about Scripts. Consider yourself the director on the stage of life and everyone in your life is operating based on a script YOU have handed them. Well, the corollary to that is, "What scripts have people handed you, that you are acting out unknowingly?" You can return the scripts to sender. Example. Although Steve had been taught a weight loss principle from a dear friend, he didn't want to follow her script to achieve his results. He wanted to write his own. So he created his own process to help people write a new script for weight loss.

STEPHEN HOLDER is an artist and also a Tai Chi and Qigong instructor. Steve has established his own branch of the Mei Quan Academy in Waterloo SE1. It has become one of the many popular and successful branches operating in London. During this unprecedented lockdown period, the Academy has moved quickly and creatively to bring all its classes live online, and while benefiting both students and instructors, Steve shares some thoughts and concerns on how online teaching may have lasting implications for those already struggling to interact in groups and in public generally. Steve is also a flourishing artist, creating illustrations, designs and geometrics on a range of mixed media including bespoke commissions for skateboards. A link to his Etsy site is below. BACKGROUND Steve is originally from Johannesburg in South Africa. He has immediate British family connections in Stroud and after a number of unpleasant experiences in his home city of Johannesburg while in his early twenties, he headed first to Stroud but ultimately to London for a change of scene. Steve fell in love with London and has now lived here for 20 years. His travels beyond South Africa have included Berlin, Beijing and Tokyo. Although Steve still visits family in Johannesburg, he prefers Cape Town which he considers to be the jewel of South Africa. THIS IS STEVE'S UNIQUE STORY ABOUT LONDON, THE WORLD AND LIFE. “Be patient… it’s (London) is a very big city, there’s lots of people, it can be very confusing and strange, you can find yourself living by yourself in a room, and maybe feeling a little bit separate from people, but just have patience, because once you establish yourself, and start to know your way around, London is wonderful, it has loads of opportunity, loads of beautiful, amazing things to see and do.”   SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS relating to STEVE'S ARTWORK: Steve can be found on these links: Instagram Steve’s website is: https://www.stephenholder-art.com Check out Steve’s ETSY SITE here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/StephenHolderArt   SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS relating to TAI CHI and QIGONG COURSES Steve's Waterloo Branch can be found on the Tai Chi website link: http://www.taichinews.com Mei Quan Academy of Tai Chi  Facebook Instagram Twitter   ABOUT THE PODCAST Information About Your Podcast Host Emma, and Travelling Through can be found at: https://www.travellingthrough.co.uk/ The Travelling Through Jingle was written and produced by the lovely Mariska Martina Show notes can be found at this link https://travellingthrough.podbean.com

Star Wars fans and collectors are legion, but among them “The Force” is undoubtedly strongest with Steve Sansweet, who spent more than 27 years as a reporter and bureau chief with The Wall Street Journal. Steve is, as certified by Guinness World Records, the owner of the world’s largest private collection of Star Wars memorabilia, and President and CEO of Rancho Obi-Wan, an independent non-profit museum in Petaluma, California that houses part of his cache. (He loans his collection to the museum but continues to own it privately.) As Steve explains to host and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart, he began collecting in 1976 as a passion, and in November 2011 “retired” to open and operate the museum. Although Steve doesn’t say so directly, Dean estimates his Star Wars collectibles are worth many millions of dollars, far more than if he had invested his available funds on Wall Street. Dean’s interview with Steve is an edited excerpt from his extended conversation with the Star Wars memorabilia Jedi that will be available later this year as part of Dean’s “News Luminaries” project, honoring journalists who have had – or are having – exemplary careers. Beginning on Thursday, March 12th, and each week thereafter, Dean will post an oral history with a prominent 21st century journalist. If you’re a Founder or CEO of a company that is looking to scale their business, this episode provides some great insight and advice.  Steve August joins Sima on today’s show, which serves as a great refresher course on things that we might already know. Listen in for timely reminders on how to really consider the next steps for your business! Steve is the Founder and CEO of Steve August Coaching. Scaling Businesses in the Market Research Space For more than 15 years, Steve has been in the market research space and takes what he’s learned to help business founders and owners scale beyond what they’re able to imagine. Steve’s method is to examine, break down, and understand what’s going on in the business and the metaphysical life of the owner, then help the owner decide what changes need to be made, and the steps needed to implement them. Although Steve’s career paths previously focused on the creative application of technology, he entered the market research space quite by accident by way of his wife, as he explains. First Time Founder Journey Steve discusses the family business in which he started out as the marketing and tech guy. As blogs started making their way onto the web, he and his wife stumbled upon a shift that changed the whole dynamic of their business. Up until this time, online qualitative research was basically replicating focus groups in online space. Steve and his wife wanted something more: to take advantage of that opportunity to access those peoples’ experiences so that they had a very ethnographic view of it.  Once they started using this and speaking about it, it drew attention and others wanted to try it. This led to the development of the first product version in 2007.  Lessons in Selling Building a great business was not the same as building a great product, as Steve soon found out. He would soon discover what his strengths and challenges were as a leader.  In 2014, the product was acquired by FocusVision. FocusVision would later package it up with other products and resell it. Steve got to experience two exits due to his options: the first exit was as the Founder, and the second exit was as part of the Management Team. The lessons that came out of these negotiations, as well as his being part of a team negotiating the acquisition of other companies, is how he got into coaching. After he left FocusVision in 2017, people started asking him for his perspective on business matters, and he realized he had valuable information to offer.  Core Stories Your core story is what drives the proverbial bus. These are the ideas in our heads that say we’re not worthy, or we’re imposters or any other negative mental chatter that might have served to protect us in past scenarios, but now prevent us from moving forward. When you’re leading the company, you have to change your core story in order to change the trajectory of your company. You can’t have a path, the fundamentals, the vision, the right team, the right processes, and a plan of execution until you have clarity of yourself. Steve and Sima discuss scenarios where core stories can make us stumble, and ways to recover. Steve's Thoughts on Exits 1. Either be for sale or don’t be for sale. 2. You’re worth pretty much what the market says you’re worth, and the leverage you have. The Importance of Taking Time Everything is reactionary, putting out a fire. You have to get to a point where you can get perspective of your own situation, and that means getting a bit outside of your own situation. Going off-line for a time, taking time to meditate, or getting away, such as to Steve’s Digital Detox Retreat, gets you away from day-to-day thinking and helps you change the way you think and be more receptive to potential solutions. As a world-known musician, Michael Franti, has been spreading his message of love, peace and social justice for decades. As an Registered Nurse, Sara Agah Franti, has witnessed firsthand the toll that life-threatening medical conditions have on both patients and their loved ones. Michael and Sara created a project that bridges their passions and expertise - Do It For The Love.In April 2013, Steve and Hope Dezember reached out to Michael and asked that Steve’s wish to attend Michael Franti & Spearhead’s concert be granted. Steve is living with advanced stages of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). During the show, Michael invited the couple to join him and the band onstage. Although Steve was barely able to move his body, he asked Hope to lift him out of his wheelchair. Wrapped in each other’s arms, they danced on stage in front of 20,000 fellow music fans. There was not a dry eye in the house.Michael and Sara had been looking for a project to work on together. That night, they decided they would continue to give the gift of live music to inspire joy, connectedness and a positive, potentially life-changing experience to as many people in need as possible. Michael came very close to dying when his appendix ruptured on tour. Sara works as an E.R. nurse. Their experiences, and the Dezembers’ story, led to the creation of Do It For The Love. Their hope is to bring thousands of people in need, to experience the healing power of music. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Today we're joined by Steve Nixon of FreeJazzLessons.com, one of (if not the) top websites for playing jazz piano - though actually it covers some non-jazz material too, and if you’re thinking that jazz means “advanced”, this episode is going to set you straight.   Although Steve specialises in piano, pretty much everything we talk about today applies across all instruments, and most of it is highly relevant outside of jazz too, so whatever instrument and genre you play, you’ll get a lot from this conversation.   Steve has an impressive background as a musician and music educator. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, he played over 1,800 gigs as a professional pianist in over 17 countries around the world, performing with Grammy Award-winning artists such as Koko Taylor and Buddy Guy.   He’s taught over 14,000 piano lessons and created FreeJazzLessons.com, the largest jazz piano education website in the world, which reaches over 60,000 students each month.   In this conversation we talk about:   • Steve’s opinion on the importance of musical talent versus hard work and how much each has contributed to his own enormous success • His philosophy on improvising - and a cool trick for how you can make your improvisation sound more interesting, even with just a single scale over a single chord • Plus the importance of rhythm skills and three great tips for how to develop your own sense of rhythm   And if you're starting to think about getting called on to play Christmas music this year, you won't want to miss what Steve shares about making the same-old Christmas tunes feel fresh and exciting for your audience.   Subscribe For Future Episodes! How To Make A Living Trading Multiple Markets – Show Notes In episode 108 of the Desire To Trade Podcast, I interview Steve Patterson, one of the top proprietary traders based in Toronto, Canada. As someone trading the markets for 37 years, he came on the podcast to talk about how to make a living trading multiple markets. More About Steve Patterson Steve Patterson has experience working in the world's largest firms, prop firms, stock broker and floor trader. During his work life, he has seen 3 market crashes and multiple Bull and Bear market cycles. Now he knows everything about how to master the markets and trade profitably through all environments, which makes him a very interesting guest. I’d love if you can take a few seconds to leave a review on iTunes or Stitcher. Let me know honestly what you think of the podcast because the only way I can improve is through your reviews. Share This! "Get the right expectations about what this business is and what is possible from this business" - Steve Patterson   10 Key Takeaways From This Episode 1. Keep Things Simple, But Not Too Simple While some strategies found online seem ultra-simplistic, there will always be an aspect that makes trading not so simple.  For instance, a candlestick pattern by itself is not likely to produce a positive return by itself. You must add rules to limit the trading you'll do (i.e. concentrate on the best setups). That's what I believe is meant by keeping thing simple, but not too simple. One thing I'm personally a big fan of is to use the Market Phase to determine whether my trade setup appears in the right context. Read: Successful Price Action Trading In 3 Steps 2. You Take Out Of Trading What You Put Into It As you've probably heard before, Forex trading is a field in which you should spend more time working on becoming better than actually trading.  After all, you are competing against the top traders of this world, algorithmic systems, and technology. If that doesn't motivate you to work harder, I don't know what will do it... I have seen how much you get rewarded for the work you put in outside trading hours. Those hours spent backtesting, researching, journaling, etc. eventually pay! 3. Pick The Market In Which You Have An Edge What's interesting about Steve Patterson's style of trading is that he decides in advance what market he is going to trade. By sticking to a market for a certain period, he ensures that he trades where there is sufficient volatility. Although Steve doesn't watch the news, that much, he notices where things are likely to happen through fundamental analysis. 4. Use Fundamental Analysis For Your View Of The Market Steve mentions early in the episode that he is bearish on the S&P500 since the beginning of August 2017 all the way to the date of the recording (August 17th, 2017). That was, in part, due to multiple companies missing earning estimates in the recent earning season. He noticed a theme. He gets to answer: "Is the smart money buying or is the smart money taking profit?" 5. Never Fight An Existing Trend One of Steve's key lesson to his students is to never fight an existing trend. Instead, he mentions the interesting fact that it is easier to go with the trend instead of going against it - even if the trend is about to end. 6. Indicators Alone Aren't Producing Results When trading any market, most new traders rely on indicators. I have personally seen how poorly some indicator-only trading strategies perform over the long-run. You can rarely expect consistency unless you add in many filters to your trades. I have personally seen how poorly some indicator-only trading strategies perform over the long-run. You can rarely expect consistency unless you add in many filters to your trades. As Steve mentions it, most people don't know why certain indicators/patterns/ work well in certain conditions and not in others.  That is something you must take into consideration and be able to adapt when you notice a change. 7. Recognize When The Market Is NOT Chaotic Steve and I spend most of our time saying "No" to trade setups because they happen in the wrong environment - a chaotic market. What's more important is being able to detect when a specific setup is likely to work out. What's more important is being able to detect when a specific setup is likely to work out. 8. Develop Patience Patience always pays. After asking Steve about his best advice for traders looking to trade only the Forex market, he replied: "learn to develop patience".  He added to that: "learn to identify the best setups." 9. Stay Optimistic Trading is probably the field in which it's the hardest to stay optimistic - speaking from experience here. :) However, all the results I got in trading occurred when I was optimistic. You must find something to get you back on track when things don't go as planned. My personal resource is listening from inspiring traders on the Desire To Trade Podcast. 10. Coaching Will Set You Apart From Other Traders When Steve started to work in institutions, he followed an existing trader for several weeks to learn the details of the job. I have personally seen a lot more success when I made the decision to invest in coaching. Watch: What I Got After Spending $5,500 On Coaching...Worth it?
