In this video interview, Donovan Bailey, Olympic gold medal sprinter, discusses his career, his thoughts about success and his message to young athletes. Bailey is in Calgary speaking Tuesday April 30 at the annual Champion Chats fundraiser for Classroom Champions. He's also guest speaker Thursday May 30 at the Calgary Italian Sportsmen's Dinner. HERE'S THE PUBLICIST MATERIAL FOR HIS BOOK A memoir of Olympic glory, the value of mentorship and the courage to champion your own excellence, from the long-reigning world's fastest man, Canadian sprinting legend Donovan Bailey. From the lush fields of his boyhood in Jamaica, to the basketball courts of Oakville, where he came of age in one of Canada's most thriving cultural mosaics, to his sprint toward double Olympic gold for Canada in Atlanta in 1996, Donovan Bailey got a long way on natural talent. But he also learned that in the bureaucratic world of Canadian sports, an athlete who didn't come up in the system needed to take charge of his fate if he was going to become the world's best. As he ascended from outsider to dominant athlete, others didn't always understand the rigour at work behind Bailey's confident demeanor. He'd learned from watching Muhammad Ali that a champion needed to act like a champion. But media grew fixated on the sprinter's immodesty, the likes of which they never saw from Canadian athletes, especially track athletes in the wake of the Ben Johnson doping scandal at Seoul in 1988. Bailey was having none of it, and when he called out Canada's subtle racism and contradicted the prevailing idea most Canadians had of their country, he left in his wake a media uproar and cracked wide open the nation's moral complacency. In addition to his unforgettable 100-metre and 4×100 relay gold-medal sprints in Atlanta, Bailey's track career was a litany of records and rare accomplishments, including his audacious 1997 race in Toronto's SkyDome against American 200-metre Olympic champion Michael Johnson to determine who was really the world's fastest man. There was no disputing the result. Bailey had been coached in success before he was seriously coached in athletics. Following the lead of his father, a machinist-turned-real estate investor, Bailey became a millionaire by the age of 21, an experience he continues to draw on as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. Frank about his dominance on the track and unapologetic for expecting as much of those around him as he expects of himself, Undisputed is an athlete's story that refuses to settle for second best. Donovan Bailey PRESS RELEASE Calgary, AB – The annual Champion Chats fundraiser luncheon held April 30, 2024 at Hyatt Regency Calgary is now sold out. At over 55 tables of guests, this year's Champion Chats will be the biggest ever and brings together over 450 of Calgary business leaders, Olympians and Paralympians, and community leaders to support the work of Classroom Champions, a non-profit dedicated to providing specialized programming for high-needs schools across Western Canada – and across North America – by partnering students and classrooms with athlete mentors. “This year's event is the biggest one yet with dozens of CEOs joining us for this incredible afternoon meant to educate and inspire us while providing needed funds for programs close to home,” said Steve Mesler, President and CEO of Classroom Champions. “It's clear that there is a lot of excitement about hearing from our stellar line-up of athletes who will speak about their own experiences achieving personal excellence.” The 2024 event panel includes: Donovan Bailey: Widely regarded as one of the greatest professional athletes of all time, Bailey won a gold medal for Canada in the men's 100m at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games and set a world record with a time of 9.84 seconds. He works to uplift organizations that aspire to achieve greatness. In October 2023, he released his memoir, “Undisputed”. Luke Willson: As a Canadian former professional football player, Luke played tight end in the National Football League (NFL) and is one of the few Canadian athletes ever to win a Super Bowl. He spent his first five NFL seasons with the Seattle Seahawks where he was a fan favourite, winning Super Bowl XLVIII with the team. He retired from the NFL in 2021 and is an NFL analyst on TSN. Waneek Horn-Miller: As one of Canada's few Indigenous Olympians, Waneek has used her unique experiences in life and sport combined with a passion for her culture to influence Indigenous and non-Indigenous leadership in sport and wellness. A Mohawk from the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory near Montreal, Waneek was behind the lines during the Oka crisis in 1990 when a Canadian soldier's bayonet stabbed her. It was a near-death experience that marked a turning point in her life. Waneek is one of North America's most inspiring female Indigenous speakers. Long-time panel moderator for Champion Chats, Tara Slone is back to host the panel and will lead the conversation about what it takes to achieve excellence, both personally and as a community — a theme that is sure to resonate with the entrepreneurs and leaders in the room. Donovan Bailey adds, “I'm thrilled to be a part of this year's fundraiser and am honoured to work with Classroom Champions to raise awareness about the critical need to provide kids with skills to meet their challenges. I look forward to inspiring Calgarians and supporting Classroom Champions' great work.” Champion Chats will also celebrate the 25 Calgary-based energy companies known as the “Energizing Communities Collective” who are focused on their commitment to creating a long-term positive impact within their operating areas across B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Gold members of the Collective include Athabasca Oil Corporation (new), ARC Resources, Crescent Point, Headwater Exploration, PETRONAS (new), Spartan Delta, Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Tamarack Valley Energy, and Tourmaline Oil Corp. “It's amazing to see how our locally based charity is growing at such a rapid pace and to see how our impact extends to classrooms across North America and around the globe. The local business community is making that happen, says Mesler.” He adds that Champion Chats is an opportunity to celebrate the non-profit's extraordinary momentum. Funds raised at Champion Chats will directly benefit children by providing them with athlete mentors, as well as supporting teachers with the Classroom Champions curriculum. More about Classroom Champions Classroom Champions is a nonprofit charity that has impacted over a million students to thrive socially, emotionally, and academically through the mentorship and mindsets of world-class athletes. Katherine Stewart-Jones was born and raised in Chelsea Quebec in the heart of the Gatineau Park. It was there that she started skiing with her family as soon as she could walk. she did began competing at local events when she was 5, BUT she was an all -around active kid. Like lots of Hear Her Sports guests, she did a wide range of sports including soccer, sailing, kayaking, canoeing and downhill skiing. During that time, sports were mostly about spending time outdoors and with her family. It was in high school, when she joined a sports program in that allowed her to juggle her full schedule of training and racing with schooling that Katherine decided to pursue skiing more seriously. Now as one of the older members of the Canadian National Team, and one of the few women racing for Canada at the World Cup level, it has become important to Katherine to be a role model for the younger female athletes on the team. She also spreads her love for all sports AND the outdoors through Classroom Champions and Fast and Female. With those two programs and with her teammates, she aims to empower women to take control of their own success and to dream big. In the episode we talk about those mentoring programs, how she works collaboratively with coaches and has taken that responsibility as well as her success into her own hands, quality training over quantity, looking at data, fear of losing fitness, and…. what she's working on during the off-season. Since it IS her off season, we talk a lot about how she's been spending the time resting and preparing to build on the incredible success she had last year, during a breakthrough season when Katherine raced to her first ever top 10 result and many top 20s. She also finished 20th overall in the World Cup distance ranking! The off season for any sport is an interesting time period both mentally and physically. Katherine offered up some great insights about her recent success and a change in outlook about competing. It was a privilege to talk to Katherine in the off season and get a good look at her mindset during this time of year.   Join Hear Her Sports Patreon https://www.patreon.com/hearhersports Support the show and women's sports media https://www.buymeacoffee.com/hearher Find all episodes http://www.hearhersports.com/ Find Hear Her Sports on all social @hearhersports Find Katherine on IG at https://www.instagram.com/kstewartjones/ Find Katherine at https://katherinestewartjones.com/

And about Classroom Champions! About Amber Calderon: Amber attended Baylor University with a degree in Psychology & Rhetoric and Argumentation. During that time I worked alongside the Dean of Psychology as his research assistant. She decided to get certified to be a teacher and taught elementary for four years! During that time, Amber managed the suicide hotline and was a Sexual Assault Crime Victims Advocate for 6 years.  While teaching, she quickly realized how lonely the profession was in addition to lack of resources. Amber started creating her own lesson plans and when searching Pinterest, discovered that there was a whole community of teachers just like her – wanting to make connections and build a digital community. These teachers were also making money from their lesson plans! She used my Psychology degree to leverage marketing tactics and made more than my teaching salary in my first year teaching! This caught the eye of the Founder of Nearpod…and thus her corporate journey began. Could your mindset be your biggest untapped asset?  If you have things you want to get better at… challenges you want to overcome… goals you want to achieve… or things you'd simply like to enjoy a little more (and struggle with a little less)… your mindset could help you do it.  Steve Mesler is a master at mindset. Not only does his non-profit organization Classroom Champions teach kids social emotional learning skills (including growth mindset), he is also an Olympic Gold Medalist, a 3-time Olympian in the sport of bobsled, and a previous member of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Board of Directors.  In this podcast episode, Steve explores the mental reframes and mindset shifts he's used to get where he is today.  In particular, we unpack the beliefs and assumptions Steve had about himself and writing in general that held him back from communicating for years, and how he has since become a stronger fundraiser, leader, thinker, and writer.  We cover: Why Steve credits his Olympic success to a fundamental mindset shift. How Steve went from hating fundraising to loving it… and bringing in nearly 3X the dollars as a result. A simple reframe you can use anytime to turn something you loathe into something you love. (Try this if you hate sales, marketing, or writing!) How our thoughts can help us or hurt us, and how to recognize the difference. The beliefs and assumptions about writing that prevented Steve from expressing himself for years… and the realization that changed his entire approach. Why you don't have to (and probably shouldn't) try to do everything by yourself, and the value of coaching and mentorship. How to get over paralyzing questions like, “what if nobody reads what I wrote,” or “who am I to do this?” and embrace your potential. Why writing involves a degree of risk-taking, and how to mitigate that risk. Why you should see your writing and ideas as a gift for other people rather than a selfish indulgence. Steve naturally inspires everyone he talks to (including me!), all with a good dose of humility, practicality, and humor.  Read and subscribe to Steve's newsletter here: www.stevemesler.org/ And check out Classroom champions here: classroomchampions.org If you need a shot of motivation or a fresh perspective, don't miss this episode!

When Steve Mesler was growing up, he dreamed of emulating his athletic hero, decathlon world record holder and Atlanta Olympics gold medalist Dan O'Brien. Steve's progress in high school got him one step closer to fulfilling that goal when he earned a scholarship to the University of Florida. But injury got in the way and eventually cut short his track career. Seeking another way to hit his Olympic target, Steve switched to bobsled and moved to Calgary to live and train. At his second Winter Games in 2006, Steve's four-man team won bronze. Three years later, they became the first American team to win World Championship gold in 50 years, and in 2010, they won the first American bobsled gold in 62 years. Steve and his sister later founded Classroom Champions, an international ed-tech non-profit organization that provides social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum and mentorship with help from hundreds of Olympians, Paralympians, the NFL, the NHL, and NCAA student-athletes. So far, Classroom Champions has positively impacted more than a million children. In this episode, Steve shares: · How mindset played a key part in beating the best bobsled team of all time · What mental skills he needed to transition from being a veteran decathlete to a beginner bobsledder · How team driver Steve Holcomb led the team to Olympic and World Championship gold while going blind · Why a passion for mentorship led to the creation of Classroom Champions · What impact mentorship and social emotional learning has on young people who desperately need role models Learn more about Classroom Champions on their website, https://www.classroomchampions.org, and keep up with Steve on his website, https://www.stevemesler.org.

I sleep comfortably at night.” “If you don't have a purpose it's kind of like not having a destination.” “I'm very comfortable in uncertainty because I know that my preparation is such that, if given the opportunity, I'm going to be where I need to be.” “The individual stuff, it's like, you know, it's chess on bikes.” “I think every Games has its own lifeblood to it.” “Watching from the outside… that was very hard.” “I wasn't ready to be done.” “Sometimes I tell people I'm a recovering Olympic athlete.” “You lose some of yourself when you step away from that because not everybody cares about the Olympics and not everybody cares about, you know, what you’ve spent most of your life doing.” “Okay, what have I learned that I can actually apply here?” “It starts with having a healthy respect for the sport that you're participating in, for the people that are devoting the time to invest in you, to being willing to accept the critique and the criticism.” Links: The Pursuit of Gold homepage 5 Smart Strategies to Confidence Conquer Your Fear in 5 Days   Laura’s Social Media: Laura's Instagram Laura's Facebook page   Connect with Giddeon:    Instagram: @giddeon Giddeon's Real Estate homepage

Schools turn to Classroom Champions for inspiring Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and mentorship programs to improve engagement, build growth mindsets, and inspire positive classroom culture. Grace Dafoe share with us the terrific program! For as long as she can remember, Grace has called herself an athlete. First it was figure skating, and from then on, she discovered the sport of skeleton at the age of 18. Now entering her 10th season, and her second on Canada's National Team, she has competed in over 30 international races, including one World Junior Championship and she has won two North America's Cup races. Her time in sport led her to pursue a Degree in Health & Physical Education at Mount Royal University in her hometown of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was here she applied her lifelong experience as an athlete to her classroom studies. Upon graduation, Grace shifted her focus to sport, while searching for an organization that fit her athlete lifestyle. Enter Classroom Champions! After completing an athlete internship, designed to introduce athletes to the inner workings of the organization, she knew she had to stay involved, and encouraged her to join the team full time. Grace works directly with the teachers and athletes who are implementing the Classroom Champions Curriculum, and loves the feel good moments she sees daily! Outside of sport & work, Grace loves a good cup of coffee, spending time with her dog Ivy & exploring the city she calls home, Calgary. (To his surprise, the latter was purchased not only by his sister but also by President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.) He is also the host of Slate's popular “How To!” podcast. He was previously a science and investigative reporter at ProPublica, and prior to that a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, where he co-authored the story that revealed Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. His writing has been honored by an array of organizations, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, to the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Center on Disability and Journalism, and has been included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology. His story “Following the Trail of Broken Hearts,” on sudden cardiac death in athletes, was chosen as one of the top 100 stories of the last 100 years by Columbia Journalism alumni. David has given talks about performance science and the uses (and misuses) of data on five continents; his TED Talks (here and here) have been viewed more than 10 million times. Three of his stories have been optioned for films: a Sports Illustrated story on the only living Olympian to have survived a concentration camp; an Atlantic/ProPublica piece detailing the DEA's fraught pursuit of Chapo Guzman's rivals; and a 2016 “This American Life” episode he wrote and narrated about a woman with two rare diseases who shares a mutant gene with an Olympic medalist. David has master's degrees in environmental science and journalism, and is reasonably sure he's the only person to have co-authored a paper in the journal of Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research while a writer at Sports Illustrated. (Like many of the characters in Range, he has benefitted from a winding career.) He has worked as an ecology researcher in the Arctic, studied geology and astronomy while residing in the Sonoran Desert, and blithely signed up to work on the D-deck of a seismic research vessel shortly after it had been attacked by pirates. David enjoys volunteering with the Pat Tillman Foundation and Classroom Champions, and, as of recently, with the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project. An avid runner, he was a Columbia University record holder and twice NCAA All-East as an 800-meter runner." "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." James 1:12 Today we talk to our Naval Academy classmate, Dan Cnossen, who has an incredible story and will motivate us all. Dan Cnossen was serving as the platoon commander for SEAL Team One in Afghanistan in September 2009 when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device) and was wounded in the explosion. The accident caused Cnossen to lose both of his legs just above the knee. He went through rehabilitation first at the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center and later at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he learned to walk with his new prosthetics. Dan was awarded both a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor from the Secretary of the Navy for his service in combat. Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar “Jennifer Regruth, April Featured Teacher” with special guest presenter, Jennifer Regruth. April 21, 2018. On Classroom 2.0 LIVE we always look forward to our Featured Teacher presentations because we love getting a peek inside the classrooms and the inspiration shared! We are very excited to welcome Jennifer Regruth as our April Featured Teacher in this week’s presentation! Jennifer plans to share some of the things that fuel her passions and drive her teaching every day. She strongly believes in the importance of setting a climate for learners because the climate you foster in your learning environment will determine the success of it. Students and teachers are directly affected by the physical and emotional climates set in the room and you, as the teacher, largely have control of these. Making your workspace a safe, pleasurable environment in every way for both students and yourself will ensure growth for everyone. Jennifer will be sharing about Classroom Champions and how it impacts so many kids. The organization pairs Olympic and Paralympic athletes with high poverty schools, (classroomchampions.org) With each monthly lesson, students learn life skills like, perseverance, healthy living and setting goals. Having a high profile athlete as a mentor is very motivating! Skype/GHO has completely changed how her students think about the world. To have a live video chat with scientists, Olympic athletes, other classrooms has been fun and inspiring. She also uses Twitter/YouTube/Instagram to help them connect globally. She continually assures her students that they have the world at the fingertips to learn whatever they want! Along with that comes Digital Citizenship, safety, and self-regulation and the importance of their digital footprint. She strongly believes that tech should be thought of as a tool for learning, researching and organizing ideas. Finding creative ways to get the kids motivated to learn, making global connections through Google Hangouts, Twitter, and online tools, being willing to try new things, and sharing new ideas with others are all priorities. She loves that she is in a profession that combines 3 of her favorite hobbies: people, technology, and learning and that she can use creativity to blend these together. Jennifer Regruth teaches fourth-graders at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School in Seymour, IN. Her career started in the fall of 1990 when she began her student-teaching experience at Brown. The following school year, she was hired as a third-grade teacher and has been at Brown now for 27 years. The past 19 years, she has taught fourth grade. She was recently awarded Educator of the Year for 2018 by the Seymour Chamber of Commerce. She is a Google Certified Educator, Classroom Champions Educator since 2012, a co-moderator of #4thchat since 2011, a Seesaw Ambassador and a tech team coach.
