Ruthie Foster joins me on the show this week. I first met Ruthie about 20 years ago, when we were both playing at a Canadian folk festival. We had a few workshops together and really hit it off. She's one of the most incredible singers I've ever heard - so powerful and soulful, but also totally open to jamming and opening things up in a cool way. We re-connected this summer at the Vancouver Folk Festival and had a blast playing together again after all those years.Ruthie is a Grammy Award- winning recording artist (among many other awards!) who has an incredible new album out on Sun Records that she made here in Nashville with Tyler Bryant called “Mileage” - be sure to check it out! Ruthie came up singing in the church, performing all over Texas, and then had a stint in New York when she got signed to Atlantic Records. That didn't really pan out and Ruthie stepped back from music for a while, joined the Navy, which led to joining the Navy band, which sort of got her back into performing music. After her time in the Navy, Ruthie re-committed to music and started releasing her first solo albums, of which she now has 11 or 12 out since about 1997. They're all excellent, and Ruthie has always stayed true to her roots of blues, soul, gospel, folk and rock & roll. I got a chance to spend a bit of time with her here in Nashville during the Americanafest this year, and it was so great to hear her tell her story about her ineteresting path in the music world. You can get all Ruthie's current info and her busy tour schedule over at www.ruthiefoster.comPlease enjoy my conversation with Ruthie Foster! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. In this episode, I get to sit down with Peter Martin of Third Coast Percussion, an ensemble I have admired for years. Peter and I dive into the inner world of a percussion quartet that tours the globe, creates new music, commissions major composers, collaborates with artists across genres, and somehow still manages to pack an unbelievable amount of gear into checked luggage.Peter had just returned from Paris, where the ensemble performed Philip Glass's August Amazonia Suite alongside a live painter, something they had never done before. From there, we talk about what it truly takes to tour as a percussion group, how they travel with twelve checked bags of instruments, how backlining works, what happens when a vibraphone arrives broken, and why they think about portability and footprint even before a new piece is written.Peter shares his personal journey from military-kid piano lessons to discovering the drum set, jazz vibraphone, and eventually falling in love with the marimba. We talk about his time studying with Michael Burritt at Northwestern, crossing paths with Brett Dietz and William James, and the surreal experience of watching his classmates become lifelong colleagues in orchestras, universities, and ensembles across the world. We also talk about the remarkable story of Third Coast Percussion itself, from its beginnings in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago to becoming a full-time, artist-run organization. Peter explains what it really means to run a chamber group from the ground up, how he unexpectedly became the ensemble's finance director, and why having control of the administrative side gives them total artistic freedom. Then we dig into the ensemble's Grammy win for their Steve Reich album, including the thrill of performing on the telecast and the artistic decisions behind putting their own interpretive stamp on such iconic repertoire. Peter describes what it was like working with producer Jesse Lewis and why that collaboration changed how they approached recording forever.Peter also talks about the emotional experience of recording Murmurs in Time with the legendary Zakir Hussain, who passed away shortly after the sessions. Hearing Peter reflect on Zakir's musicianship, generosity, and spirit is profoundly moving. We wrap with a look at what lies ahead for Third Coast Percussion, from new commissions to international touring to upcoming collaborations, including the premiere of a new work with Jlin. As Peter says, there is never a month when the ensemble is not creating something new, and their passion for pushing percussion forward is unmistakable. It was an honor to talk with Peter and get an inside look at the ensemble's artistry, work ethic, creativity, and humanity. Third Coast Percussion continues to redefine what chamber music can be, and I am grateful to share their story with you.To learn more about Third Coast Percussion, visit their website. Sean "Diddy" Combs continues to dominate headlines as he serves his 50-month prison sentence following his federal conviction. On October 3rd, 2025, a New York federal judge handed down the sentence along with a half-million dollar fine and five years of supervised release, marking a dramatic fall from grace for the once-untouchable music mogul. The pivotal week of his trial in mid-June 2025 proved decisive in his conviction. During those critical days, prosecutors presented bombshell evidence including six firearms with defaced serial numbers discovered near alleged "freak-off" supplies. Homeland Security uncovered AR-15 parts, drugs, and lubricants allegedly connected to a sex-trafficking operation. A witness identified as "Jane" delivered emotional testimony, confronting Combs in court after describing years of abuse and coercive control. Jonathan Perez, Diddy's former assistant turned immunity witness, provided damaging drug procurement testimony that strengthened the government's case, though not without complications. The trial itself became a spectacle when Kanye West made a surreal courthouse appearance, adding to the already volatile atmosphere. The controversial dismissal of Juror Number 6 has since come under scrutiny for potential bias concerns.Psychotherapists analyzing the case have examined whether Combs' reported actions align with narcissistic personality traits and psychopathic tendencies, pointing to patterns of coercive control, emotional domination, financial control, threats, surveillance, and sexual coercion as hallmarks of long-term abuse cycles. Experts noted how high-profile abusers weaponize influence, fear, and fame to silence victims.Currently, Combs is incarcerated at FCI Fort Dix, where recent reports suggest he's maintaining his spirits and even bringing holiday cheer to fellow inmates as the year winds down. Before his downfall, the entrepreneur had built a substantial empire, expanding beyond music into fashion with his Sean John label, beverages including his lucrative partnerships with Cîroc vodka and DeLeón Tequila, and various media ventures through Revolt TV.His legal team continues to navigate the aftermath of his sentencing as he serves out his prison term, a stark contrast to his former status as a Grammy Award-winning mogul worth over a billion dollars.Thank you for tuning in today. Both old and new, Austin-based band Black Pumas is centered around guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada and 27-year-old songwriter Eric Burton. Grammy Award-winning Quesada has played in Grupo Fantasma and Brownout, and accompanied artists from Prince to Daniel Johnston. Burton grew up in church and then got heavily involved in musical theater. He arrived in Austin in 2015 after busking his way across the country from Los Angeles, and connected with Quesada on the phone. From idea to session to self-titled debut album, they've been making music that is neither retro nor derivative, with influences ranging from Sam Cooke to Neil Young and Ghostface Killah. Now a touring machine, Black Pumas brings their skillful combination of folky strum, sticky funk, dusty psych, and old soul to an in-studio session. (From the Archives, 2019.)Set list: 1. Colors 2. We are back where we started, in more ways than one, with songwriter, artist, producer, and musician's musician – Charlie Peacock. In this comprehensive conversation, recorded in person at Charlie's home studio in Nashville, JJT and CP revisit his earliest days as a young musician in California. The release of his recent memoir, Roots and Rhythm, and an EP worth of previously unheard recordings from 1981 called The Kahne Sessions, frames this story of formation and transformation. We then follow the man as he becomes one of the most successful producers in the history of pop music. A special 30-minute Jukebox feature traces the evidence – from his earliest production work with The Choir and The 77s, to a Top 40 pop breakthrough, his discovery and launch of one of the great 90s alternative rock bands, and multiple Grammy Awards in the 2000s in the Americana and Folk space. This may be our longest show yet (and it features over 60 musical cuts), but when considering the work of someone like Chuck, it seems more than fitting. His voice, both literally and as experienced through his piano, pen, and studio control board, has done as much to shape our concepts and imagination about the redemptive potential of art in a broken yet beautiful world as just about any other artist. So, sit back, relax, and let the words and the music wash over you as we give thanks for the gift that is Charlie Peacock. Episode Summary: This week on Backstage Bay Area, host Steve Roby welcomes two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling. Known for his work with the Turtle Island Quartet, Stanley Clarke, and Bob Weir, Mads is shifting gears this season to share a piece of his Danish childhood in San Francisco.Mads takes us inside his project, Cool Yule: A Nordic Holiday Celebration, a "love letter" to his upbringing in Copenhagen. We explore the concept of "hygge," compare the structured traditions of a Danish Christmas with the chaotic energy of American holidays, and delve into the fascinating—and sometimes frightening—folklore of the North. From a rice pudding-eating gnome to a child-eating "Christmas Cat," Mads explains the stories behind the music. Plus, hear how he transforms an 1830s violin into a growling baritone instrument he calls "Uncle Scratchy."In This Episode, We Discuss:Life Lately: Meds' recent touring with Melvin Seals & JGB and his deep dive into the Grateful Dead repertoire.Nordic vs. American Christmas: Why the "Christmas spirit" feels different in Denmark, the importance of hygge (coziness), and why the 24th is the real main event in Scandinavia.Folklore & Music:The Gnome's Attic: The story of the Nisse who demands his rice pudding (and fights off rats to get it).The Christmas Cat: An Icelandic legend about a giant fashion-policing cat that eats children who don't receive new clothes for Christmas."Uncle Scratchy": Mads explains his unique baritone violin, tuned an octave lower to create a cello-like, medieval growl perfect for monster stories. The Frozen Connection: How a modern Disney hit connects back to Danish author Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen.Featured Music:"The Gnome's Attic" (from Cool Yule) "The Christmas Cat" (from Cool Yule) Upcoming Live Show: Catch Mads Tolling & The Mads Men live for a special holiday engagement!Event: Cool Yule: A Nordic Holiday Celebration Dates: Saturday, Dec 13 & Sunday, Dec 14, 2025 Venue: Joe Henderson Lab, SFJAZZ (San Francisco) Showtimes: 7:00 PM & 8:30 PM The Band: Mads Tolling (violin), Colin Hogan (piano/accordion), Gary Brown (bass), Eric Garland (drums).Resources & Links:Get Tickets: SFJAZZ Ticket LinkMads Tolling Official Site: madstolling.comHost: Steve Roby, Backstage Bay Area
Jimmy Cliff, born James Chambers on 30 July 1944 in Somerton, St. James Parish, Jamaica, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of reggae's most beloved and influential figures. His parents worked modest jobs on a rural farm, and from a young age, Cliff showed a natural gift for singing. As a child, he sang in his church choir; by his early teens he had moved with his family to Kingston, determined to carve out a career in music. At just 14 years old, Cliff scored his first hit with the self-penned single “Hurricane Hattie”, a song that nods to his own miraculous arrival during a storm. With his early success in Jamaica, he soon caught the attention of producer Leslie Kong, whose Beverly's label would provide a platform for Cliff to record more material and refine his style. In 1965, Cliff followed an invitation from Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, to move to the United Kingdom. While in London, he experimented with combining ska, rocksteady, and soul influences, earning recognition beyond Jamaica. Over the late 1960s, he released key tracks like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People” and “Vietnam”, the latter gaining admiration for its protest message. A turning point in his career—and in the global recognition of reggae—came in 1972 with the film The Harder They Come, directed by Perry Henzell. Cliff starred as Ivan Martin, a small-time musician who is forced into a life of crime. The movie's gritty realism and its all-star soundtrack, featuring Cliff's vocals on songs such as “Many Rivers to Cross”, “Sitting in Limbo”, and the title track itself, resonated widely. The film is often credited with helping bring reggae to a wider international audience. Though Cliff continued to release music through the 1970s, he also explored his spiritual side—spending time in Africa and embracing Islam, as well as other spiritual practices. In the 1980s, he returned to a more mainstream sound and released Cliff Hanger, winning his first Grammy Award in 1985. The success continued: in 1993, his cover of Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now” for the Cool Runnings movie soundtrack became a global hit, reintroducing his voice to a new generation. Throughout his life, Cliff recorded prolifically—producing over 30 albums. His later work continued to reflect his commitment to social justice: in 2012, his album Rebirth, co-produced with Tim Armstrong of Rancid, won him another Grammy. In 2022, he released Refugees, a deeply humanitarian record inspired by global crises, which he used to voice solidarity with displaced people. Jimmy Cliff's influence extended far beyond his singing. He collaborated with a wide array of artists—from the Rolling Stones to Annie Lennox to Paul Simon—and his songs were covered by many others, underlining the universal appeal of his message. In recognition of his impact, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010. In Jamaica, he was honored with the Order of Merit, one of the nation's highest accolades. On a personal level, Cliff was intensely private. He had several children, and his longtime partner, Latifa Chambers, survived him. His wife announced his passing on 24 November 2025, revealing that he died following a seizure and pneumonia. Jimmy Cliff's legacy is defined not just by his music, but by the spirit it carried: hope, resistance and unity. From his rural Jamaican beginnings to global stages, he remained true to his message and his people. In his words, he always believed in crossing to the other side—to higher ground. Now, his journey has come full circle, but his songs continue to carry that same power to uplift, to challenge, and to heal.To learn more about Jimmy Cliff head to his website https://www.jimmycliff.com/

Hayley Williams' grandpa Rusty nurtured her musical dreams – now, she's returning the favour. As the lead singer of American rock band Paramore, Hayley Williams has won three Grammy Awards and toured the world. Behind the scenes, her grandad Rusty has been her biggest supporter and musical hero, nurturing her childhood passion and later her career. Rusty is the one who taught Hayley how to play the drums and the piano. He even followed Paramore's tour bus around the US in his car with Hayley's grandmother, his childhood sweetheart Sharon. It turns out this very sentimental member of Paramore' s entourage was so supportive of his granddaughter's ambitions in part because his own attempt to make it as a musician was cut short. In the 1970s, Rusty sent his demo recordings to a music boss in Nashville who wanted him to mould his soul-inspired songs into the country music genre. Disillusioned, Rusty ended up quitting the music industry, and got a job in a lumber yard and eventually ran a store installing car stereos. He focused on being a father and a provider for his family. For 50 years, his songs lay hidden on a collection of old tapes, gathering dust. That is until Rusty's long-lost recordings were rediscovered, and the dreams he'd packed away and long forgotten were revived – with the help of his granddaughter. This time around, Rusty gets his big break - and releases his debut album, Grand Man, at the of 79.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Elena Angelides and Maryam MarufLives Less Ordinary is a podcast from the BBC World Service that brings you the most incredible true stories from around the world. Justin Bieber BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Justin Bieber has kept the spotlight buzzing over the past week with a flurry of public appearances in New York City alongside Hailey Bieber. The pair were seen together at a Lakers versus Knicks game in Madison Square Garden and were later photographed sharing an intimate dinner at The Corner Store before enjoying a date night at the IPIC movie theater. According to Us Weekly and People, Justin appears “happier than he's been in a long time,” prioritizing comfort and authenticity in public, even if it means leaving the spa shirtless and unfazed by public scrutiny. Despite skipping the 2025 Grammy Awards for the second year in a row, sources emphasize that Justin and Hailey's marriage remains solid, with strong mutual support and a focus on maintaining their privacy amid relentless public attention.Professionally, the most significant news is Justin's exit from his previous fashion venture, Drew House. He made headlines by announcing on Instagram that he is no longer associated with the brand, stating, “Drew House does not reflect me, my family, or my life.” While the Instagram story was quickly deleted, speculation arose about his reasons. However, GQ and India Today confirm Justin has since turned his creative ambitions toward a new fashion label called SKYLRK. Launched in July, SKYLRK is a collaborative project with Hailey actively participating in streetwear design and creative direction. She describes the process as “super fun and collaborative,” and Justin reportedly maintains full creative control, working closely with Pink Dolphin co-founder Neima Khaila. The couple have hinted at inspiration drawn from their family life, including their now 15-month-old son, Jack Blues, who remains largely out of the spotlight as they continue to balance public careers with parental privacy.Business headlines have reignited debate over Justin's financial situation, particularly after the explosive May 2025 TMZ special and reports in People that he sold his entire song catalog for $200 million to Hipgnosis. The documentary alleges the sale was prompted by looming financial collapse—claims that Justin's representatives declined to comment on. Further, his musical royalties have now become part of tokenized IP assets on platforms like Aria Protocol, integrating his catalog into crypto-financial markets, a move widely viewed as innovative but also symbolic of larger shifts in artist revenue streams.Standing amid ongoing health rumors, various outlets like IMDb and Celebrating The Soaps have cast a spotlight on his frail appearance at recent events, prompting concern among fans and speculation about his well-being. Friends and Hailey reportedly remain very supportive, while sources underscore that Justin is prioritizing self-care, creative fulfillment, and time with family. On social media, both Biebers continue to uplift one another, with Justin expressing immense pride over Hailey's recent success: her skincare brand Rhode was acquired for $1 billion by e.l.f. Beauty—a landmark deal Hailey says Justin “witnessed from the very beginning.”In sports news, the couple's joint appearance cheering on the Toronto Blue Jays during the World Series reignited his Canadian pride and further showcased their united public front. In sum, while questions linger about Justin's health and finances, his focus appears squarely on creative ventures, marriage, and fatherhood, with major moves in both fashion and music IP setting the stage for an evolving public narrative.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

Two-time Academy Award®-winning composer Ludwig Göransson and Executive Music Producer Serena Göransson join us to discuss the powerful use of music in Ryan Coogler's “Sinners,” recently nominated for six 2026 GRAMMY® Awards. In this conversation with music journalist Jon Burlingame, the Göranssons share how integral music was to the film's storytelling — and how their close collaboration with Coogler shaped the creative process from start to finish.“Serena and I were there, on the dub stage, almost every day… [Director] Ryan [Coogler] is an incredible collaborator. He wants to hear ideas… take it in, and make difficult decisions. He really wanted this to be such an immersive experience... That's why he really spent time on the mix, like panning things around, making it create an experience… Sometimes I had to pinch myself and think to myself, Ryan and I, we've been doing this since USC, and our first studio film. We were young and we had a great experience. But at the same time, when you get started, people always think, oh, these guys don't know what they're doing. And there's a lot of things that you have to prove. And now we're at this stage in our professional careers where we are experienced and also have more responsibilities and can really create in a different way… and try to push the envelope as much as we can.”—Ludwig Göransson, Composer, “Sinners”Be sure to check out “Sinners,” now streaming on HBO Max, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®. Have you ever thought about meeting your own heroes and what you would actually say to them if you did? When I was growing up, I used to idolise Jon Bon Jovi. I had a huge flag of him up on my bedroom wall and would listen to every bit of music he released with his band, watch every interview that he gave and read every book I could find about him. I tried to write songs like him, grew my hair like him and even started wearing cowboy boots - just like he did. And, to date, I have seen Bon Jovi in concert on 33 different occasions. So, when the opportunity to talk to him on my podcast came up, you can probably imagine how I felt. Jon Bon Jovi is the frontman for the Grammy Award-winning band Bon Jovi. They have been together for over 40 years, have sold an incredible 130 million albums and performed in over 50 countries around the world for more than 40 million fans. In 2018, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in recognition of their longevity and impact on popular music and outside of his music career, Jon and his wife run the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to bringing about positive change and helping those in need “one SOUL at a time.” Yet, beyond the global fame, the sold-out arenas and extensive charitable work, I discovered a man who's thoughtful, grounded and genuinely curious about what it means to live well. During our incredible conversation, we discuss: The key ingredients of a happy life: gratitude, friendship, contentment, joy and love. What Jon has learned about long-term relationships – in marriage, friendship and with his band. How losing his voice and undergoing vocal surgery became a lesson in acceptance, patience and rediscovering gratitude. The real cost of success, and why he believes it's always been worth it. Why optimism has always been at the heart of Bon Jovi's music, and why the world needs it now more than ever. What fame can take from you, and how to stay grounded and authentic in the face of it. Jon's reflections on ageing, spirituality and finding peace within himself. His advice for anyone who has a dream but feels afraid to take the first step. Having this incredible opportunity to speak with Jon reminded me why his music has always resonated so deeply with me. Beneath the anthems and achievements lies a simple message – that happiness, optimism and connection are what truly make life meaningful. Perhaps Jon's story – and this conversation – will encourage you to think about what brings you joy, who brings you meaning, and how you might share a little more of yourself with the world. They say never meet your heroes - and I understand why they do. But, hand on heart, I can honestly tell you that there is a little boy inside of me, who's pretty pleased he got to meet his. Dina moved to New York City in 2011, to further her career in PR and Marketing and launched 3d Public Relations in January 2012. Dina also started her own charity in 2010 called Generation Philanthropy. Generation Philanthropy is a non-profit 501c3 dedicated to raising awareness and funds for charitable programs both locally and internationally in need of supportEpisode OverviewLiz welcomes Dina Rezvanipour, the founder of 3D PR Marketing, for a candid conversation about PR, branding, authenticity, and running a modern agency that aligns with your personal passions. The pair dive into what makes 3D PR different, the importance of authentic visibility, and how to know when you're really ready for publicity.Download Episode TranscriptTopics CoveredAbout 3D PR Marketing:Dina introduces her full-service PR agency, specializing in beauty, wellness, hospitality, and lifestyle brands. She describes their blend of traditional PR (print, online, TV, events, influencers) and why events—especially their 3D Wellness Retreat—are at the heart of their strategy. The Power of Retreats:Dina shares the inspiration behind the 3D Wellness Retreat, which focuses on finding purpose and letting go of limiting beliefs. She curates each event with experts who've helped her personally, making these retreats both impactful and deeply personal.Origin of “3D”:The name comes from Dina's desire to look at brands (and people) from all angles—never just one dimension. Fun fact: it's also a nod to her family, where she, her mom, and her brother all have names starting with “D”.Authenticity in PR and Marketing:Dina and Liz discuss “vanity PR” versus meaningful visibility. They emphasize how authenticity is non-negotiable for long-term success; being visible is only valuable if your message is true to you. When are you “ready” for PR?Dina believes two things are essential: you must be mentally (and energetically) ready to grow, and you need a solid, functional website as your foundation. Without these, PR efforts are wasted.Navigating Client Relationships:Why Dina opts for quality over quantity when choosing clients, and how she believes deeply in having a real, personal connection with those she works with. She prefers a small, mighty team and deeply values client retention and involvement.Industry Insights:Dina shares the realities of PR—rejection, ghosting, and constant “asking”—and the thick skin required to succeed. She debunks misconceptions about PR being all about ego, explaining that even “bad press” can have its value if handled authentically.Working Globally:3D PR works with clients worldwide, many of whom Dina has never met in person—a testament to the power of referral and the importance of building long-term, trust-based relationships.Memorable Quotes“You have to love what you do in PR, because it's so stressful—you need real passion for your clients.” — Dina“Visibility without authenticity or a message is just vanity marketing.” — Liz“Even bad press is still press…you want people talking about you.” — Dina“Quality over quantity, always.” — DinaConnect with Dina Rezvanipour & 3D PR MarketingWebsite: 3dprmarketing.comDina on Instagram: @dinarezvanipour3D PR Marketing on Instagram: @3dprmarketingFor ListenersIf you're thinking about PR, Dina recommends making sure you're genuinely ready to grow and that your online presence is rock solid. Tye Tribbett is a Grammy Award-winning gospel artist who infuses his songs with scripture, teaching listeners about God as he sings. In 1996 he created “Greater Anointing,” a choir of his family and friends, and ever since, he's been writing Jesus-focused music to start conversations, not condemn. Tye talks with the Perrys about humility, ambition, and what it means to stay kingdom-focused in an industry obsessed with viral success.
