The energy and excitement he brings is absolutely contagious, and I loved every minute of it! Steve Sims is the founder and CEO of the luxury concierge service Bluefish. In 2017, he published a book, “Bluefishing: The Art of Making Things Happen.” Steve shares with me more about himself, what he's been up to, and how things are going with his consulting and coaching company. Steve tells me about the powerful moment in his life at age 15, where he saw the vision of his life. He talks about the effect that it made on his choices from that moment, and how he was ultimately able to break the cycle. He now helps others break the cycle by identifying their failures, keep moving, and take action on what they've learned from those failures. We break down the key points in Steve's book, “Bluefishing: The Art Of Making Things Happen”. I read this book prior to having our conversation, and was absolutely blown away and honestly had wished I would have read it 10, even 20 years sooner. One of my top three values that's also discussed in the book is initiative, so I could really relate in terms of taking action. We discuss finding your passion, motivation and ignorance, and the importance of not listening to naysayers, negative self talk and sabotage. We talk about the benefits of being comfortable in uncomfortable situations, as well as seeing the silver lining in all situations. Steve and I share our breaking and turning point moments in life where we felt like we gave into our negative self talk, focused on the wrong things, and in a sense “sold out”. It was great to connect and relate to him on this growing experience in my own life. I love Steve's analogies and insights. I've taken away so much value and insight that i'll be implementing on my own path to building my good life. One way to monetize your podcast is through joint venture or JV partnerships. When partners help each others grow and market, your audience and business can rapidly hit new levels. A joint venture in business is different than a JV partnership in online marketing and business. THE JV DIFFERENCE In business, a joint venture is a business entity that is created by two or more parties, generally characterized by shared ownership, shared returns and risks, and shared governance. Companies will typically create a joint venture for one of four different reasons. The businesses might look to gain access a new market. A joint venture could help the businesses gain scale efficiencies by combining assets and operations. This relationship could help share risk for major investments or projects. The companies might want to access skills and capabilities of the other company. When it comes to online marketing JV partnerships, some of these reasons hold true, but not all. For infopreneurs, the definition is a little more broad and loosly defined. A marketing JV partnership in online business typically involves two or more parties pooling their resources and expertise to achieve a particular goal. The risks and rewards of the enterprise are also typically shared. In these cases, ownership and governance is typically NOT shared like it is with traditional business. ONLINE JV As a podcaster, you might promote a product or service from an expert. With an affiliate agreement, you would earn a commission with each sale. This is a straight up affiliate relationship. When you are a joint venture partner, you take the relationship a little further. This JV partnership might include an interview on your podcast, an appearance on your partner's summit or a co-promoted webinar. A JV relationship is a deeper partnership than a standard affiliate relationship. You could promote Amazon products on your podcast. There are many affiliate products to promote from sites like ClickBank or JVZoo. You typically won't interview the owners of these products. You simply promote and earn a commission. If you attend an online event intended to meet partners such as Collaborate (www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/collaborate), you create a relationship where you each help each other reach their goals. JV EXAMPLE For instance, I met Steve Eriksen at Collaborate. Steve runs Midlife Solopreneur at www.MidlifeSolopreneur.com. He helps and supports solopreneurs with mindset, marketing, sales and much more. As Steve and I became JV partners, I promoted his summit. He invited me to appear on his summit. I interviewed him on my podcast. He promoted my last webinar. Steve is now helping me build my next giveaway. Along the way, Steve earned a commission from my courses that sold through his affiliate link with me. I earned commissions from his courses that sold through my affiliate link with him. But it was more than just affiliate sales. It was a partnership. We helped each other get exposure. I have met dozens of partners through Collaborate in this way. I've mentioned a few there with Steve. Podcast interviews, summits, and giveaways. You could also speak at events, host a webinar together, include each other in newsletters or blog posts, shoot video together, create a product together, provide coaching for the other's mastermind group, provide content for your partner's membership site and a variety of other ways. The key to a great JV partnership is being open-minded. If you are willing to talk, brainstorm and try things, you'll find success. The first idea typically doesn't work. Just as Customer Success as changed and matured over time, Customer Education is growing and changing as well. It’s not just something you do when you’re one of the huge industry players; you can increasingly invest in Customer Education from earlier stages with fewer resources to begin with. In fact, for many companies, effective Customer Education programs can help them accelerate their growth from earlier stages. With improvements in technology to produce and host learning, it’s easier than ever to get started. But your Customer Education program isn’t just about producing content. It needs a strategy too. Steve talks about the evolution of Customer Education strategy, and how it has moved from a competitive edge to table stakes for many businesses. Greetings, all! It’s been a minute, but we’re back, we’re refreshed, and we’re buzzing with excitement about the next few months of Many Minds. This episode we’re talking about one of humanity’s most powerful cognitive tools: numerals. Numerals are those unassuming symbols we use whenever we read clocks, check calendars, dial phone numbers, or do arithmetic. My guest on today’s show is Stephen Chrisomalis. Steve is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Wayne State University in Michigan, where he specializes in the anthropology of numbers, mathematics, and literacy. He’s the author of the recent book Reckonings: Numerals, Cognition, and History, which is the focus of our conversation today. Humans have developed more than a hundred different systems for representing numbers over the last 5000 years or so. Steve and I discuss how these systems differ from each other. We talk about how they build on the ancient tally systems used in the Upper Paleolithic and how the develop hand-in-hand with writing. We consider the popular idea that the Roman numerals fell from favor because they’re no for good calculation. (Not so much, says Steve.) We also talk about some lesser-known numerical notation systems. Like the one the Cherokee polymath Sequoyah developed alongside his much-celebrated syllabary. And, of course, we cast a glance to the future. What kinds of systems might humans be using centuries or even millennia from now?  Numerals are—in and of themselves—pretty cool. But they become all the more so when we see them in broader context. As Steve’s book makes clear, numerals offer a compelling case study in how of our cognitive technologies are shaped by the vagaries of history, the dynamics of culture, and, of course, the constraints of the human mind.  Learned a lot from this one, folks—I think you’ll enjoy it. There are not many resources for males to assist them in supporting their partners undergoing fertility treatments. This can often lead to increased feelings of guilt, shame, and isolation. Today’s guest, Steve Moskowitz, is the other half of Rachel Hess, a guest on episode 39. Steve joins us to present the male perspective of what it is like to watch a partner go through treatments. As Steve highlights, many of us have been taught that getting pregnant is easy, when, in fact, different people experience varying levels of difficulty. So, when there are fertility struggles, it can be difficult to know where to turn for emotional support. Steve sheds light on how he supported Rachel emotionally and physically and what they learned from the journey. The couple is now expecting their first child. Steve acknowledges that while it has been challenging, it has strengthened them as individuals and as a couple because they had to communicate so openly. We also talk about the resources that could be out there for male partners and the power of sharing your struggles, dealing with miscarriage, and how families and friends can support those struggling with fertility. Fertility treatments are not easy physical or emotional undertakings, but as Steve points out, when it ends with you having a family, it is so, so worth it.

In episode 311: The Mysterious Egress Industries we are joined by Kyle and Steve from The Holosky Podcast (https://www.holoskypodcast.com/) . A couple of months ago I was contacted by a mutual listener telling me that I needed to look into the crazy things that were happening on their show. Boy, they were not kidding. Steve was doing some research on Reddit for one of their shows and stumbled across "dream flyers" that were asking peculiar questions with a phone number to contact "Egress Industries." Steve decided it would be interesting for the show and bought a burner phone to conduct this experiment. As Steve and Kyle progress with this venture things got out of hand. They were connected to a guy named Bob, that was having bizarre happenings with these numbers from Egress himself. Once the three started talking Egress knew and started texting phones that they should not have had the numbers too. Egress started to text Kyle's co-worker and possibly make an in-person visit to Kyle's wife. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that the simple fact that Kyle and Steve are talking to me about Egress, I might now be on the radar of the mysterious Egress Industries. Today we're chatting with Steve Faulkner who is a viticulturalist with Oakridge wines based in the Yarra Valley. They're the unsung heroes behind that beautiful glass of rose or the flavours that jump out at you in your shiraz. Today's chat with Steve covers some technical aspects of wine making which is really interesting. Steve mentions in 2009 there was a significant shift in practices and weather patterns and this has led to adjusting how they actually grow the wines in the vineyard. With harsher, hotter summers and springs like this year that are very wet – the flow on effects of climate change are seeing harvests and seasons change. I had this "A-ha" moment during this. A lot of what Steve talks about around plant health and soil health reminded me a lot of what both Amy Knight in Ep (24) and Steph Geddes Ep (13) were talking about relating to people. As Steve talks about the cross-over between soil management I'm really surprised that more farmers generally aren't talking. This is how intertwined the Medicare for All and public mail movements are: if we had a national single payer system in place for the last decade, the USPS would be running a surplus. Steve DeMatteo of the American Postal Workers Union joins us to discuss the surprising connections between the postal service and our healthcare system, the political and financial obstacles that the USPS has faced under the Trump administration, and also how you can fight to protect this vital public service. Show Notes This week we welcome to the podcast Steve DeMatteo from the American Postal Workers Union (APWU)! The postal service has become crucial for our democracy during the COVID pandemic, as many voters shift to using mail ballots for safety concerns. TOTALLY COINCIDENTALLY, the Trump administration has also attempted to undermine and privatize the postal service in the run-up to the November elections. We invited Steve on to talk about the important and, for most people, surprising ways in which protecting our public postal service and establishing healthcare as a right are intertwined. The APWU and its President Mark Dimondstein are among the leading advocates for Medicare for All in the labor movement. Why? As Steve says, postal workers are in a similar position to many workers. Although the APWU has won fairly good health benefits for their members, the rapidly rising costs of healthcare are brought to the table by their employers (the postal service) every contract, and used as a counterweight for winning decent wages and other important benefits for postal workers. What is the scale of the United States Postal Service (USPS), and how is it different from private mail companies like UPS or FedEx? The postal service employs more than 600,000 workers across the country (second only to Amazon as a national employer!), at 30,000+ post offices around the country. The USPS is also the largest civilian employer of veterans in the country. It is the only service explicitly mentioned in the U.S. Constitution, and the USPS actually predates the Constitution - in 1775, Benjamin Franklin served as the first Postmaster General. In contrast to this history, in which the USPS has served as an integral part of American life since the country's founding, for-profit mailing companies like UPS or FedEx operate on a very different model. USPS service is universal, and does not charge discriminatory rates depending on whether you're rich or poor, or whether you live in an urban or rural area. For-profit mailing companies, like healthcare corporations, will not mail to unprofitable areas, and will charge every consumer as much as they can. In fact, about 25% of mail sent by UPS and FedEx are dropped off to a public post office for the final leg of your delivery - since for-profit mailing companies won't service the final address! (See this IPS study on how 70 million Americans are up-charged by UPS and FedEx because they don't live in a major city.) Now that we understand what the postal service is, how do we explain the fact that the USPS has struggled financially in recent years - even before coronavirus? Most people will never hear about it, but almost all of the USPS's losses stem from a 2006 law called the "Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act," which required the postal service to pre-fund retiree health benefits 75 years in advance (!!!). That means the USPS has to pay, right now, for the health benefits of future USPS retirees who haven't even been born yet. No other government agency, and certainly no private corporation, has to pre-fund their healthcare benefits three generations in advance, and it created an impossible financial situation. If you read or watch mainstream news on why the postal service has struggled financially, though, you will never hear about this 2006 law. The reason the press overlooks the reality of the postal service's struggles is due to a concerted effort to demonize the USPS...

10/8/20--Only a week has passed since Steve, Jenn, and Stephanie gathered in the virtual pod studio, but so much has changed. Of course, President Trump's positive COVID-19 test rocked the country and world, and the administration's ever-changing reports on the timeline of Trump's infection have left Americans wondering when he was officially infected and who else (besides the at least 34 staffers who've been identified as COVID-positive) might have the contagion. This fate is not entirely surprising, as Trump and his administration have repeatedly flouted guidance put forth by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the CDC, and the WHO, often refusing to wear masks and social distance. As Steve puts it, "It comes down to the contempt that they showed for the science behind it, contempt for truth, contempt for verifiable, scientific facts, the things that we all know about how to avoid the virus.” It seems to Steve that the White House mentality has almost become "an article of faith," that the thinking goes something like, "'We have to pretend that this thing isn't happening. We have to pretend that it doesn't exist. And, what's more, if you think it does and you're going to wear a mask and act responsibly, then there's something defective about you.'” Republican candidate for U.S. Senate stops by The Horse Race to talk about why he's running against incumbent Ed Markey. He says he is "concerned about the tone of our politics," and feels that Markey is more focused on "polarization and posturing than getting things done for the American people." In a state made up of voters who, for the most part, oppose Donald Trump, O'Connor says he wants to remain upfront about who he's voting for, and that's Trump. “I'm not wearing a MAGA hat, but I'm voting for the president," for reasons that he describes as economics, community safety, and foreign policy. "The economic growth that we've experienced as of the end of 2019 was great. It was historic in that it extended to the bottom 20% of earners for the first time in about 40 years," O'Connor says. O'Connor also believes that if Amy Coney-Barrett is approved as a Supreme Court justice, the Senate should move ahead with her confirmation. "I don't like what happened with Merrick Garland," he says, referring to 2016 when Republican senators in February blocked the Obama-nominated Garland from being confirmed before the 2016 election in November. O'Connor would like to set up a mandatory retirement age for justices to prevent unforeseen events that can't be planned for. Finally, we look ahead to 2022 with news of an upcoming challenge to Gus Bickford, chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. BIckford, a white man, will be contending with Bob Massie who has officially announced his candidacy, and likely with Mike Lake, who has not yet officially announced. Unless another candidate jumps in, the race will consist of three white men. Steve points to data collected exclusively at The Horse Race Data Analytics Headquarters showing that if either challenger were to win, they would be the second Michael or second Robert to hold this position. “The leader at the top of the party doesn't exactly reflect the changing makeup of the Democratic party," Stephanie says. Recent wins for the Democratic party in Massachusetts have largely been made by women and people of color.

Welcome to Payments on Fire® and to our third, now annual, discussion with Steve Ledford, SVP Products and Strategy at The Clearing House, and the leader of his company’s Real Time Payment Network initiative. As in prior conversations, Steve and George discuss the growth of the RTP Network both in terms of transactions and dollar volume as well as an important metric, the growth in the number of financial institutions and FI processors who are already or in process of connecting to the network. The evolving set of use cases supported by a new payment system is often surprising. Few expected Zelle’s leading use case to be rent payments. While the RTP Network is in its infancy, Steve shares a number of use cases already in flight. Changes to the network’s rules also position it for expanded use. For example, the network’s recent increase in transaction size limit to $100,000 positions it far better for B2B transactions. Like all bank services, strong user authentication is critical and firmly out of scope for the new network. Banks will have to improve their authentication processes because account takeover is a real risk. As Steve says in this discussion, banks can also reduce the risk of accountholders sending money to bad actors simply by well-timed messaging. Financial institutions can adopt best practices that have evolved in the UK and other markets with similar systems in place. For example, the bank should ask the accountholder if they personally know the recipient of the funds and if they have been pressured to make the payment within a certain timeframe. Both questions are meant to caution the accountholder before pressing Send. Steve also addresses the announcement of FedNow and its ripple effects on the RTP Network. New national payment rails are a once in a generation event. New rails, better data representation techniques, and mobile devices make for an innovator’s playground. Take a listen.

Star Wars fans and collectors are legion, but among them “The Force” is undoubtedly strongest with Steve Sansweet, who spent more than 27 years as a reporter and bureau chief with The Wall Street Journal. Steve is, as certified by Guinness World Records, the owner of the world’s largest private collection of Star Wars memorabilia, and President and CEO of Rancho Obi-Wan, an independent non-profit museum in Petaluma, California that houses part of his cache. (He loans his collection to the museum but continues to own it privately.) As Steve explains to host and award-winning journalist Dean Rotbart, he began collecting in 1976 as a passion, and in November 2011 “retired” to open and operate the museum. Although Steve doesn’t say so directly, Dean estimates his Star Wars collectibles are worth many millions of dollars, far more than if he had invested his available funds on Wall Street. Dean’s interview with Steve is an edited excerpt from his extended conversation with the Star Wars memorabilia Jedi that will be available later this year as part of Dean’s “News Luminaries” project, honoring journalists who have had – or are having – exemplary careers.
