This week we are joined by one of the voices of Battle Court Jai alai, Andrew Blechman. Together we break down the enhanced interference controversy, talk power rankings, and find out if Blechman rides with Clone Cartel. God Bless Jai Alai.
Once considered noble and heroic, pigeons are now viewed as an urban nuisance — one that costs cities millions of dollars a year. Zachary Crockett tosses some crumbs. What a day! We just finished Day 1 of our 2-day competition with Camp Kawaga. To recap the 28 event day we first have on 11 and Under starts Judah Nitzkin, Eli Thompson, and Jack Boehnke. They break down a lot of 11U events today including 5 Newcomb games, 5 softball games and a hockey game. Then we bring on 12 year camper/counselor and podcast favorite Andrew Blechman who is visiting this week. We dive deeper into the day, and then bring on Brady Weiss to tell us all about what happened with the 13 and unders at Kawaga today. Then we finish the podcast with a bunch of nonsense. Enjoy!

On this episode of the Camp Cast, Jason spends some time at the beginning talking about our good friend and CM brother Scott Marcus, who tragically passed last week. Scott, who won the Nate Wasserman Award in 2001 (along with Joe Klein) was a camp legend and all around amazing person who we loved dearly. As mentioned on the podcast, please check out all the memories and stories that Scott's former cabin mates, co-counselors, peers, and campers are sharing on social media. Also please Support the Anxiety and Depression Association of America and Help #BreaktheStigma! By donating to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) you help further research in the field and ensure that critical resources are available to those who need them most. Link to Donate: https://donate.adaa.org/give/322300#!/donation/checkout While there's no easy way to transition away from this, we can try. Much like Scott, the Nate Wasserman award winner in 2013 Andrew Blechman has an infectious personality that people absolutely LOVE being around. Blechman comes on the podcast in our next Alumni Spotlight with some extremely HOT takes, some heartfelt memories, advice, and amazing stories. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did recording it!
My guest is Kathe Anderson. She frequently leads field trips in the Phoenix-area and at wildlife festivals across the state. She participates in multiple local survey programs and Christmas Bird Counts, along with authoring articles for local Audubon Society newsletters. We talk about some of her experiences on field trips, counts and she tells us about the Rock Pigeon. For some pictures of Rock Pigeons, please checkout the podcast's Instagram - @lookingatbirdspodcastDuring the episode, Kathe references these two books, both great places to learn more about pigeons:A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching: Getting to Know the World's Most Misunderstood Bird by Rosemary MoscoPigeons: The Fascinating Saga of the Most Revered and Reviled Bird by Andrew Blechman
Did know that—scientifically speaking—there's no difference between a dove and a pigeon? Yet a dove's more colorful counterpart has been dragged through the cultural mud. In doing so, we've missed out on the rich history and amazing features of this incredible creature. Andrew Blechman (author of Pigeons: The Fascinating Saga of the World's Most Revered and Reviled Bird) is here to share the jaw-dropping details.A few curiosities you'll uncover in this episode:The world event that led to the cultural downfall of pigeons in AmericaThe loving history between pigeons and humansHow a pigeon can find its way home from hundreds of miles awayDid You Know?Genghis Khan and his grandson created a pigeon post that spanned—get this—one-sixth of the entire world.CreditsCurious State is a Quick and Dirty Tips podcast hosted and produced by Doug Fraser.Find Curious State on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, or subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates.Podcast Manager - Adam Cecil Podcast and Advertising Operations Specialist - Morgan ChristiansonDigital Operations Specialist - Holly HutchingsMarketing and Publicity Assistant - Davina TomlinIntern - Brendan Picha The Quick and Dirty Tips network is a division of Macmillan Publishers in partnership with Mignon Fogarty, Inc.Have a question? Craig and Chadd begin this week's episode with follow ups to Episode 3 on invasive species and Episode 2 regarding American Beach and Evan's Rendezvous. Also discussed was Craig's recent story from the Florida Phoenix about the Stillwright Point neighborhood in Key Largo and how Florida continues pushing for more development in areas especially prone to flooding. This week's guest is Andrew Blechman, author of "Leisurland: Adventures in a World Without Children," which is all about the famous/notorious Florida planned 55+ community The Villages. The Villages has been in the news recently for fiesty Trump vs. Biden protests - from the comfort of golf carts of course - one of which led to Trump retweeting a video of a supporter shouting "White Power." A conversation that was expected to be amusing takes a seriously dark turn as Blechman recalls stories of his time spent living in The Villages.
