Today I share my conversation with fellow (suicide loss) bereaved mom, author & speaker Erin Blechman. We discuss her incredible son Max, life after suicide loss of a child and her book My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide. Everyone will have a takeaway from this one.....& Erin & I share so many of the same realities...including that hope does come back AND that time alone does not ‘fix' anything (it's what we do with that time that matters)! In her own words:"The loss of my Max has been devastating," shares Erin, " and it put me on the path to become an author, speaker, and certified Grief Educator. My goal is to elevate the conversation...and to help other bereaved parents deal with the loss of their own beloved child...In my book, 'My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide', I chronicle the eighteen months following the devastating loss of my beloved son, Max to suicide after his long battle with mental illness. I offer grief support to bereaved parents through online groups and community talks that seek to build greater understanding of mental illness, suicide, loss and grief. I live part-time in both Pennsylvania and Florida with her husband, Bill and Max's dog, Emmylou". Today, Erin & I discuss:Her unexpected turn into complicated grief & her journey in the 4 years sinceWho was Max? Does she signs?... and some favorite memoriesWhen she first felt the 'nudge' to help others - her path to becoming a grief advocate, educator & resource to others like herself. The vantage point that the book was written from & her intentions & hopes for the book. Grief Illiteracy - why is it so profound AND how do we change it? Where does she go now from here...?GET HER BOOK HERE -- "My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide"Follow Erin on:Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn and on her WEBSITE ____________________________________________________________________My WEBSITE "The Leftover Pieces; Rebuilding You" is support central. For a way to leave a Legacy for your child - GO HEREIf you, or someone you know, is struggling with suicidal thoughts, reach out:  CALL 988   OR, TEXT the word "HOME" to 741741 iSupport the showSupport the show

Tune into this third episode in the Sound Bites® Podcast series to learn about: ·       where food waste happens and how it impacts the environment ·       how reducing food waste saves time and money ·       how flexitarianism provides opportunities to reduce food waste ·       strategies to reduce food waste at home ·       food planning vs. meal planning ·       flexitarian fridge clean-out meal ideas ·       repurposing ingredients and recipes to reduce food waste This series is sponsored by Danone North America and has been submitted to the Commission on Dietetic Registration for 3 hours of continuing professional education credits for RDNs, NDTRs and CDCESs. Diet culture emphasize thinness over health and equates weight loss and thinness as superior - both physically and morally - which leads people to spend time, money and mental effort towards achieving the “ideal body.” A healthy relationship with food on the other hand is free from diet rules about what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat and allows you to eat all foods in a way that feels good for your body. This balanced and flexible approach to food fits perfectly in the flexitarian lifestyle. This 3-part podcast series discusses the benefits of flexitarian eating and its intersection with promoting a healthier relationship with food and planetary health through sustainable zero waste cooking efforts.  Tune into this second episode in the series to learn about: ·       examples of diet culture and the negative consequences associated with it ·       what a healthy relationship with food looks like ·       how flexitarian eating can provide opportunities to improve your relationship with food ·       7 flexitarian pathways that can help create a better relationship with food ·       what food freedom is and how to achieve it ·       ways to increase awareness of how you think about food and the dialogue in your head ·       tips for how to challenge and release negative thoughts ·       focusing on what to add to your plate to help yourself feel good This series is sponsored by Danone North America and has been submitted to the Commission on Dietetic Registration for 3 hours of continuing professional education credits for RDNs, NDTRs and CDCESs. The first drawing I saw by R. O. Blechman showed a boardroom table full of people trying to brainstorm. In 6 stages, it showed different people having an idea, the ideas were represented by various forms of lighting, from tiny lightbulb to lamp with shade to a massive chandelier. In the last frame the boss at the end of the table comes up with an idea, it's represented by a miniscule lightbulb.Brilliant observation, very funny.I also loved the naive style of the drawing. It looked like a note one naughty child would pass to another secretly in class.Drawn in a hurry because they were excited. The apparent lack of craft means it feels personal, human.A master draftsman like Leonardo daVinci couldn't improve it.He'd kill it.Over the years I became more familiar with Blechman's lines.Often referred to as a nervous line.Countless ad folk have copied it - Alan Parker, John Hegarty, Gray Jolliffe and dozens more, including me.It just looks so easy (try it). You'll find you can draw squiggley lines in the shape of a person, but they feel like those chalk outlines the police draw around bodies; dead.Bob's not only feel alive, they conjure up multiple personalities with endless emotions.Often with a couple of dots and two or three lines. It's like some kind of magic trick. And whereas most artists get smoother, slicker and more polished over the years, Bob chose to move in the opposite direction - his line becoming more broken and juddery with each year. (Come to think of it, didn't Picasso take a similar route?)This distinctive style meant you could spot a Blechman from the next county. But more important than his lines are his ideas. They cover the map, from the big, weighty issues, like politics and death, to the kind of every day minutiae Seinfeld would go on to cover. His observations are as relevant today as they were decades ago. They're about being human. And whereas the styles of many of his contemporaries timestamp their work, Bob's human, anxious lines don't date. Now 91, Bob still sends a cartoon to the New York Times every week.We had a great chat, hope you enjoy it.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.10.08.330993v1?rss=1 Authors: Nunes, A. R., Gliksberg, M., Varela, S. A. M., Teles, M., Wircer, E., Blechman, J., Petri, G., Levkowitz, G., Oliveira, R. F. Abstract: Hormones regulate behavior either through activational effects that facilitate the acute expression of specific behaviors or through organizational effects that shape the development of the nervous system thereby altering adult behavior. The neurohormone oxytocin (OXT) has an activational role in several aspects of social behavior, including social processing, attention and reward, in rodents and humans. Previously, we showed that this activational role of OXT is evolutionarily conserved in deep time, since OXT also modulates perception of visual social cues and social recognition in zebrafish. In contrast, the organizational action of OXT neurons in maturation of distinct neural systems necessary for social behavior remains less explored. Here, we show that in zebrafish, OXT is required during early life for the display of social affiliation in adulthood. Perturbation of OXT neurons during early development led to a loss of dopaminergic neurons, associated with visual processing and reward, and altered the neuronal response to social stimuli in the preoptic area and the ventral telencephalon of the adult brain. Ultimately, adult fish which were ablated in early life, displayed altered functional connectivity within social decision-making brain nuclei both in naive state and in response to social stimulus and became less social. We propose that OXT neurons have an organizational role, namely to shape forebrain neuroarchitecture during development and to acquire an affiliative response towards conspecifics. Illustrator, graphic novelist, and filmmaker, R.O. Blechman, talks to Giuseppe Castellano about why he became an artist despite not loving to draw, and having no interest in art; how he went from having a “rigid” style with “no quality whatsoever” to one of the most recognizable styles in all of illustration; what happened when Maurice Sendak asked Blechman for advice; what would be his best piece of advice for today’s illustrators; and much more.

Craig and Chadd begin this week's episode with follow ups to Episode 3 on invasive species and Episode 2 regarding American Beach and Evan's Rendezvous. Also discussed was Craig's recent story from the Florida Phoenix about the Stillwright Point neighborhood in Key Largo and how Florida continues pushing for more development in areas especially prone to flooding. This week's guest is Andrew Blechman, author of "Leisurland: Adventures in a World Without Children," which is all about the famous/notorious Florida planned 55+ community The Villages. The Villages has been in the news recently for fiesty Trump vs. Biden protests - from the comfort of golf carts of course - one of which led to Trump retweeting a video of a supporter shouting "White Power." A conversation that was expected to be amusing takes a seriously dark turn as Blechman recalls stories of his time spent living in The Villages.

Judge Blechman gives a detailed account of how he and his co-workers stayed safe during the shooting by huddling under the attorneys’ tables in the courtroom. He mentions how a bullet from the shooter’s gun ricocheted through a window and into the courtroom. The fear he felt on that day was like nothing he’d ever experienced before. Tune into this podcast to hear survivors tell their stories and honor the memory of the victims. As Judge Blechman describes, Bailiff William "Arnie” Wilkerson, who was fatally shot by Provenzano, was a caring, sweet human being who gave his life protecting others.  Bailiff Harry Dalton and Corrections Officer Mark Parker died years later from injuries related to the shooting.  Their lives were celebrated during the 34th Remembrance Ceremony on January 10, 2018.  Though gone, their heroism and selfless sacrifice will be remembered forever. In this first installment of the three-part series, The Shooter, The Victims, The Aftermath, Chief Judge Frederick Lauten speaks with former Fifth District Court of Appeal Chief Judge Emerson R. Thompson, Jr. about what it was like to work in Orlando prior to the 1984 courthouse shooting. The “Magic City” was a quieter and friendlier town before the tragic event of January 10, 1984 rocked the community. Appointed to the circuit bench by Governor Bob Graham in 1980, Judge Emerson Thompson was the first African-American chief judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court serving from 1989 to 1991. Judge Thompson describes the courthouse security, although appropriate for its time, as being drastically different from what it is today. He recalls there being multiple entrances to the courthouse with few security checkpoints. He also details how carrying small weapons in the 1980s was socially acceptable, so it would be commonplace for civilians to have handguns or pocket knives in their possession.  Additionally, he talks about the lack of cameras, computers, or radio systems in the courthouse. Coupled with the less stringent security measures that were established at the time, Judge Thompson’s account provides listeners with an accurate backdrop for the events that occurred on that dreadful day. Both Judge Thompson and Judge Lauten recount the times they ran into the shooter, Thomas Provenzano. They explain that, in hindsight, Provenzano was a suspicious character who visited the courthouse often and was, at times, very pushy and overstepped his bounds. Take a listen to their stories and the eye witnessed accounts of many others. Be sure to tune in next week as Judge Lauten and Judge Thompson sit down with Judge Mark S. Blechman to discuss the fateful day of the shooting at the Orange County Courthouse. Let us know what you think about the podcast.

He won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animated Programming, was inducting to the Art Directors Hall of Fame, and has drawn multiple covers for the New Yorker, but his most lasting legacy may be the mid-60s advertisements he created for Alka-Seltzer and CBS — a fact that makes R. O. Blechman a quintessential 20th century artist. This year, the swiggly-lined artist released his second graphic novel more than 50 years after his first. Amadeo & Maladeo is a whimsical prince and pauper story, charting the life of two musically-inclined half-brothers separated by vastly different circumstances. Blechman is quick to admit that he sees the product as only half-finished, a sort of storyboard for the animated film in his mind. Fittingly, the artist presented a truly incomplete film during an appearance at the MoCCA Festival in New York, debuting his attempt at a feature length adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide for the first time in public. It’s both a testament to the artist’s vision and a bittersweet look at what might have been. It’s a theme that has followed Blechman through much of his career. A victim of circumstance and a failure to fully embrace trends, it easy to imagine the New York City cartoonist having become more of a household name, but with a robust resume dating back to 1953, the Blechman has left an impressive mark on the fields of animation, production and cartooning.
