Here's to those who Wisconsin … that's what they say in this part of the world. Because traveling here is not so much about exploring a place as discovering a mindset. In this two-part documentary series, recorded on location, we'll be searching for that Wisconsin state of mind. Today we'll be looking for it through the lens of its music, architecture, theater - and motorbikes. It's a story about how art can connect us more deeply with the land, and how the land inspires it. Wisconsin is renowned as being home to some of the friendliest and most welcoming people you'll ever meet. During our weeklong road trip recording this podcast, we found that and lots more from Native American drums and motorcycle rides, to pizza farms and a praying mantis who just won't get off the stage. We hope you enjoy our journey, and if it inspires you to take one of your own – you can. All our on-location documentaries are designed to be trips that you can repeat exactly as we did it – or just pick the stuff you love. Go to travelwisconsin.com to find out more. For their most important public gathering in the presidential election, Democrats have chosen to meet on the traditional lands of the Potawatomi, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Ojibwe, Odawa, and a handful of other nations. The state has no established federally recognized tribes, but the number of Chicago citizens who identify as Native American has more than doubled in the past ten years. We'll be in Chicago, talking with Native Chicago residents who are also clued in to the Democratic political process about what the party is doing to reach Native voters and what sets them apart from their political rivals. GUESTS Pamela Silas (enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin descendant), active member of the Chicago American Indian Community Mary Smith (citizen of the Cherokee Nation), former IHS director and founder of the Caroline and Ora Smith Foundation Monica Rickert-Bolter (Prairie Band Potawatomi), visual artist and director of operations at the Center for Native Futures Shaun Griswold (Laguna, Zuni, and Jemez), editor of Source New Mexico

Then brothers Carter and Reid Parks come on to talk about the rest of our camp day including the conclusion of B&A, our intense camper/counselor tennis tournament, and much more. Enjoy.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Four years after the murder of George Floyd and the mass protests against policing that followed, corporate media claim that voters have turned on “defunding the police" — the movement to shift public resources away from policing and into other approaches to improving public health and safety. But what is fact and what is fiction when it comes to this issue, and where does the 'defund' movement stand? In this episode, three journalists reporting from the frontlines on matters of policing and prisons share what they see on the ground, within police departments, and in the media. Cerise Castle is a Los Angeles-based reporter who created “A Tradition of Violence”, a podcast about gangs inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, based on an extensive investigation into more than five decades of terror, murder and abuse; Lewis Raven Wallace, of Durham, NC, is the author and creator of “The View from Somewhere”, a book and podcast about the problematic political history of journalistic objectivity, and the Abolition Journalism Fellow at Interrupting Criminalization, a multi movement resource hub for advocates, and Kelly Hayes is a Menominee author, organizer, educator and photographer from Chicago. She also hosts the Truthout podcast “Movement Memos" and is co-author (with Mariame Kaba) of the book “Let This Radicalize You”. What is the corporate media getting wrong about the defund movement? All that, plus a commentary from Laura.“I thought about my own vulnerability when doing this reporting. While I was still reporting my initial series on deputy gangs, I received several messages from people inside the department that they were in fear for my life . . . The repercussions have been very real for me, but it is not anything that would ever stop me from doing this work.” - Cerise Castle“When I look at what's happening in Palestine and I see the AI targeting that's being used to select targets for assassination at an inhuman pace, and when I look at the mass surveillance apparatus that Palestinian people are subjected to and most importantly the normalization of this mass annihilation of people, I see threats to all of us, things that we should all expect to be pervasive.” - Kelly Hayes“We have to some extent defunded the police here in the city of Durham and . . . moved money out of the police budget and into a whole new city department that is geared toward community safety through non-police responses . . . People can call an alternative number and have trained crisis responders show up . . . and come without police.” - Lewis Raven WallaceGuests:•. Cerise Castle: Journalist•. Have you ever wished you could just ask an expert, “How the heck do I do this…in simple terms?” That's exactly what I thought as I was planning out 2024 content for The Found Podcast: Why not give entrepreneurs and small business owners an opportunity to ask real questions in real time and get real answers that matter to them? In this episode format called “Coaching Calls,” a small business owner/entrepreneur is given an opportunity to submit a question they would like me to answer about marketing, business growth, personal development, or anything that's on their mind! Today's submission is from one of my former coaching clients and friend, Natalie Berning of Berning Acres, who asked, “Should I add Pinterest to my business marketing strategy?” This is a layered question, but it's one I think we all of us should ask from time to time as we develop our marketing strategy and assess its return on investment. Benefits of Incorporating Pinterest in your Small Business' Marketing Strategy Now, my friend this is a very layered question, and as I go into with Natalie, it's not as simple as just starting an account and saying “Hey, let's Pin!” I highly recommend that anytime you add a platform to your marketing toolkit you make sure A: that it is aligned with your ideal audience B: that you have the time to dedicate to the learning and the growth it's going to take to get started on the platform C: that you develop a long-term and short-term plan for how this new platform will serve your business D: especially with Pinterest, begin with the end in mind and map out your customer's acquisition journey That being said, there are lots of reasons a small business could benefit from the addition of Pinterest to their marketing strategy: Visual Discovery: Pinterest is a highly visual platform where users discover ideas, products, and inspiration through images and videos. Small businesses can leverage this visual aspect to showcase their products or services in a visually appealing way, making them more discoverable to potential customers. High Intent Audience: Pinterest users often have high purchase intent, with many actively seeking ideas and inspiration for future purchases. By creating engaging and relevant content, small businesses can connect with users who are actively looking for products or services like theirs, driving traffic and sales. Longevity of Pins: Unlike other social media platforms where content may have a short lifespan, pins on Pinterest can have a long shelf life and continue to drive traffic and engagement over time. This means that small businesses can benefit from ongoing exposure and visibility for their content, even months or years after it's been pinned. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Benefits: Pinterest acts as a visual search engine, allowing users to discover content based on keywords and interests. By optimizing pins with relevant keywords and descriptions, small businesses can improve their visibility in Pinterest search results and drive organic traffic to their website. Referral Traffic: Pinterest is a powerful driver of referral traffic, with users frequently clicking through pins to visit external websites. Small businesses can use Pinterest to drive traffic to their website, blog, or online store, increasing brand exposure and potential conversions. Targeted Advertising Options: Pinterest offers robust advertising options, including Promoted Pins and Pinterest Ads, which allow small businesses to target specific audiences based on demographics, interests, and behaviors. This targeted approach can help small businesses reach their ideal customers and drive meaningful results. Steps for Starting out on Pinterest Pinterest isn't just another social media platform—it's a powerful tool for driving traffic, increasing brand visibility, and connecting with potential customers. If you're ready to harness the potential of Pinterest for your business, here are five essential steps to get started: Create a Business Account: The first step to launching your Pinterest marketing strategy is to create a business account. This will give you access to valuable analytics and advertising features that can help you track your progress and reach your goals. Optimize Your Profile: Take the time to update and edit your account's bio section, profile picture, and helpful links. Use this space to showcase your brand personality, share important information about your business, and drive traffic to your website or other online properties. Create Relevant Boards: Next, create boards that align with your content pillars and target audience interests. Use simple, SEO-friendly titles for your boards to help your content get found in Pinterest search results. Organize your boards strategically to make it easy for users to find the content they're looking for. Curate and Repurpose Content: Don't limit yourself to sharing only your own content on Pinterest. Curate and repurpose high-quality content from other creators that is relevant to your audience and aligns with your brand. Share these pins on your boards to provide value to your followers and keep your feed fresh and engaging. Create Fresh Pins: Finally, create your own fresh pins that direct people to your website, sales pages, and email opt-in forms. Use eye-catching visuals, compelling copy, and clear calls to action to encourage clicks and engagement. Experiment with different pin formats, designs, and messaging to see what resonates best with your audience. By following these five steps, you'll be well on your way to launching a successful Pinterest marketing strategy that drives traffic, increases brand awareness, and helps you achieve your business goals. There, the Berning family milks 400 cows, 3 times each day, 365 days a year. Their herd consists of mostly Holsteins (the black and white ones!) and in addition, they run about 850 acres of crop ground. The Bernings have always loved inviting people to come check out the farm and experience what farming looks like in the 21st century. So it wasn't long before they had the idea to add education and agri-tourism to their operation. Throughout the year, the Bernings host a variety of events, tours, and camps to bring people to the farm and learn about what it takes to make the food we see on the shelves in our local grocery stores. From their kid-friendly Farm Camps and day camps to the adults-only Night at the Farm events perfect for date night, their events sell quickly and get rave reviews from visitors in the Galena, Illinois, area. Their hope is that you'll leave with some great knowledge about agriculture, farm animals and farm life (and a deeper appreciation for that wholesome nutritious glass of milk you enjoy each day!) On this VERY special episode of the Camp Cast we are launching our new 4-part series of podcasts and video recordings we are calling the “International Staff Experience”. In this series we will be interviewing and talking to international staff, who were never Menominee campers, that decided to return to camp on staff for multiple summers. Our goal is help our first-year international staff hear and see things from the perspective of people who were in their shoes not long ago. We explore the nerves of coming to camp for the first time on staff, how long it took to really connect to camp, what some of the highest and lowest moments are for a new international staff member, and much, much more! On this episode Jason chats with Beth Potts and Alice Matthews, both returning for their second summer's from England. We hope these are both fun and bring a unique perspective to camp. For new staff we hope you get a better sense of what your potential connection to camp can be this summer, and for the rest of our community, we really hope you get to know some of our truly important staff members that you may not get a chance to otherwise. Enjoy!

Today's animal is the majestic moose, symbolizing resilience, bravery, strength, stability, wisdom, balance, power, courage, speed, and agility. Moose makes its home in the northern parts of Canada, the United States, Europe, and Asia. This creature is a skilled swimmer, and can move through the water as fast as six miles an hour. It can also run 35 miles per hour, twice as fast as a human. The moose has exceptional vision, and its antlers are very sensitive, acting as a large satellite. In North America, several tribes including Chippewa and Menominee have moose clans. These tribes as well as the Cree see the moose as a symbol of survival and stamina. One native story from the Potawatomi tribe suggests the moose helped create humankind by marrying a native woman who admired his strength and the moose had her children. They believe that to this day, humans carry moose medicine with them. Call on the moose when you need more confidence, when you need to progress and move forward in life, when you are seeking wisdom and knowledge, when you need to remind yourself of your accomplishments, and feel proud of meeting your goals. When you need the endurance to deal with a difficult phase of life, when you need to be calm, and reduce a restless mind, when you need to be loving and kind, when you need to protect your loved ones. When you need to adapt to changes in life. When you need to be a valuable team member, when you need to be powerful and fearless, mentally and physically. So call on moose medicine often. Call on the moose spirit, bring moose spirit into your life.” Call it in with Dar!”Support the show

For this conversation we are honored to welcome Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba back to the podcast. This is part 1 of a 2 part conversation on their latest book Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care. For both of these folks, I'm going to read shorter bios today, and then link to more of their work, because for each of them I could easily spend 10 to 15 minutes just talking about their backgrounds. Kelly Hayes is a Menominee author, organizer, movement educator and photographer. She is also the host of Truthout's podcast Movement Memos. Kelly is a co-founder of the direct action collective Lifted Voices and the Chicago Light Brigade. Mariame Kaba is an organizer, educator and curator who is active in movements for racial, gender, and transformative justice. She has founded or co-founded a number of organizations including but not limited to the Chicago Freedom School, Project NIA, We Charge Genocide, and Survived and Punished. She is also the author or co-author of many books and zines including but not limited to No More Police and We Do This 'Til We Free Us. Both of our guests today are known for their extensive organizing around, writing about, and advocacy of prison-industrial-complex abolition and all that entails as a liberatory horizon and arena of radical organizing. Much like this conversation, the book is a radical invitation for folks to organize and take action in big and small ways, but most importantly in collective ways. We really appreciated this book and encourage all of our listeners to get a copy. The book is an excellent resource, it's funny, it's engaging, and no matter where you are coming from I'm sure you will find it useful for your organizing, activism and radical engagement with others. We want to extend our gratitude to Mariame and Kelly for this conversation and part 2 which we will release in a few days, for their organizing and writing and for the many ways that they invite people into abolitionist practice. We will include links to some free companions created for the book as well. These can deepen your study of the book, hopefully collectively, offer reading lists, reading questions and many other really great resources. This episode marks our first episode of June, we released seven episodes in the month of May. That is only possible because of the support of our listeners. We have been experiencing a lot of folks unable to renew pledges lately on the show, which is understandable during harder financial times. We do want to thank all of the folks who support us on an ongoing basis or for however long they can. And we invite new listeners and those who haven't become patrons yet to do so. You can become a patron of the show for as little as $1 a month or $10.80 per year. We receive no revenue from foundations or advertisers so it is only through the support of our listeners that we are able to bring you conversations like this on a weekly basis and often more frequently than that.
