A little past midnight on July 30, 1945, the USS Indianapolis, a US Navy cruiser, had just delivered the uranium that would be used in the first nuclear bomb dropped on Japan, and was returning to the Philippines when it was struck by a Japanese torpedo. The ship was badly damaged in the attack and within ten minutes it rolled onto its side, dumping 890 crewmen into the pitch-black ocean and dragging the remaining 300 down with the ship. Those who survived the torpedo strike did what they could to grab supplies before abandoning ship, but there were very few life boats or life jackets, so many of the sailors had to float in the water or cling to the few rafts they did manage to take before jumping from the boat. To make matters worse, their mission had been highly confidential and no one in the Navy knew where the Indianapolis was, much less that it had sank. The surviving crew thought things were about as bad as they could get, then the sharks began showing up.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1945. What started as a conversation for my hobby podcast about Amateur Radio, Cliff's Notes on Amateur Radio, turned into something much bigger—a treasure trove of insights about the entrepreneurial journey. I sat down with Jim Newcomb, founder of Lido Radio Products, to talk about his fascinating history in Amateur Radio. But as we dove deeper into his story, it became clear that this conversation wasn't just about radios; it was about the serendipitous twists and turns of life, the mentors who shape us, and the grit and creativity it takes to turn a simple idea into a thriving business. Jim shares how a chance job at Icom America introduced him to the world of Amateur Radio, how he identified an unmet need in the market, and how he balanced pursuing his passion while meeting his immediate financial needs—a lesson every entrepreneur can benefit from. Whether you're just starting out, building momentum, or dreaming of the next big thing, this episode is packed with inspiration and actionable insights for your entrepreneurial journey. The number of respected scientists and accomplished inventors who declared the airplane an impossibility is exceeded only by the number who said the same thing about space travel, television sets, microwave ovens, nuclear power, heart transplants, and female senators.   Stumbling on Happiness, Daniel Gilbert, pg. 124   There is always a nay sayer in the crowd. I once heard a joke that said if you are ever lost, pull out a deck of cards and play solitaire - because it wont take long before you will put a card down and someone will lean over your shoulder and say “I wouldn't have used that card there”.    Three reasons you need Nay Sayers in your life.  - They will help you clarify and intensify your reasons and choices.    They really do you a favor by causing you to dig into your beliefs and do a gut check. Many times give you an advantage to look over your motives and goals and gain even more invaluable insight. You become even more skilled at what you are attempting to do.   J.K. Rowling: Before becoming a global phenomenon, Rowling's manuscript for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was rejected by twelve publishers. The rejections fueled her determination and forced her to refine her writing, ultimately leading to the creation of one of the most successful book series of all time… that small little series called Harry Potter, sold over 600 million copies… not to mention the royalties on movies, cartoons, toys and products like cereal and clothing…           - They will help you build a thick skin. One of the biggest problems in todays world is the noise… the noise of the crowd. You can't escape it… but given enough time and enough resolve you learn to become deaf to it. You not only just disregard it, but you become deaf to it. I have many times had my wife, friends even antagonists ask me “doesn't it bother you what they are saying”?  I honestly can look at them and say… I didn't notice it. The deafness and silence it creates actually becomes the fuel to your motivation and to your drive…. Because you can't hear them anymore you gain greater focus.   Maybe you have heard of the term flow? Its when seemingly the world stops, time stands still and you hear nothing… athletes speak of this all the time. Its a beautiful skill gained by learning how to block out the noise of the Nay Sayers.       - They prove you are moving forward and not backward.  If you want to know if you are moving in the right direction, check the crowd. Typically if more people think your goals are ludicrous you are on your way… if most people agree with your goals they are probably to easy, to unfaltering… they won't change you, they are not worth your time and effort. Look there will always be some people who like what you are trying to do, the majority will be silent for many reasons, but the loudest voices will be the Nay Sayers… thats a good sign… keep pushing on.     - Here is a bonus thought. The best way to hone your instincts and your judgement and critical eye is constantly having people call you out….  REMEMBER  Haters produce creators.
