Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 2, 2023 is: démarche day-MARSH noun The word démarche refers to a course of action or a maneuver, and especially to a political or diplomatic maneuver. Démarche is also often used specifically for a petition or protest that is presented through diplomatic channels. // The speaker urged wealthy nations to heed the démarches of those less powerful countries bearing the brunt of climate change. See the entry > Examples: “… the two top American diplomats, Antony J. Blinken, the secretary of state, and Wendy Sherman, the deputy secretary, issued a formal démarche to a senior Chinese diplomat, Zhu Haiquan, at the State Department around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 over the balloon, telling him his government had to do something about it.” — Edward Wong, Julian E. Barnes, and Adam Entous, The New York Times, 16 Feb. 2023 Did you know? When it comes to international diplomacy, it's important not only to talk the talk but to walk the walk—which makes démarche an especially fitting word for diplomatic contexts. The word comes from French, where it can mean “gait” or “walk,” among other things. In English it was first used in the 17th century generally in the sense of “a maneuver,” and it soon developed a specific use in the world of diplomacy. Some of the other diplomacy-related words we use that come from French include attaché, chargé d'affaires, communiqué, détente, and agrément—not to mention the words diplomacy and diplomat themselves.
Insults, accusations and talk of war crimes and nuclear holocaust dominated the world's premier diplomatic stage on Thursday, as the United Nations Security Council met to debate how and whether anyone would be held accountable for the war in Ukraine. Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov called Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelensky, a “bastard,” but was not around long enough to hear what many of his counterparts had to say. After arriving 90 minutes late to the meeting — and missing the briefings given by António Guterres, the U.N. secretary general, and Karim Khan, Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court — Mr. Lavrov left early. The U.S. secretary of state, Antony J. Blinken, denounced President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia for saying on Wednesday that he could use all arms available to him in the war, interpreted by officials in both Russia and the West as a veiled reference to nuclear weapons. “Every council member should send a clear message that these reckless nuclear threats must stop immediately,” Mr. Blinken told the Security Council, in some of his sharpest comments since the war began. “Tell President Putin to stop the horror he started.” “One man chose this war. One man can end it,” he added. “Because if Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seeking to head off a potential assault on Ukraine, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will meet with Russia's foreign minister on Friday as the two sides explore whether there is still a diplomatic path to avoiding a conflict in Eastern Europe. The talks will try to break a deadlock that was thrown into sharp relief last week when a series of three negotiating sessions between Russia and the West ended in an impasse. The thorniest issue was Russia's demand that NATO pledge not to expand eastward, a condition that the United States and Western Europe have rejected. The White House said on Tuesday that Mr. Blinken would “urge Russia to take immediate steps to de-escalate.” “We're now at a stage where Russia could at any point want an attack in Ukraine,” said the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki, “and what Secretary Blinken is going to do is highlight very clearly that there is a diplomatic path forward.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What You Need to Know is there are 2 things from this week worth understanding — 1) We are under assault from the Chinese communist regime and the leaders who are supposed to defend us are not doing their job! We see this clearly from the meeting in Alaska between Sec. Antony J. Blinken, security adviser Jake Sullivan, and the Chinese diplomats. 2) Did you see Biden fall going up to Air Force 1? Let's hope he is ok! And also, image matters. The world needs to know that President Biden is in charge, but it's hard to know for sure if that's really the case. Jayne Schindler, Phyllis Schlafly Eagle Leader in Colorado, and great friend of the late Phyllis Schlafly, discusses the importance of education and more specifically teaching children how to read. Also, she talks about Rep. Lauren Boebert and the great work she's doing in Colorado. For a great resource to teach children to read, check out the First Reader at PhyllisSchlafly.com. In a call with European foreign ministers on Thursday, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said he would begin steps to restore the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that was abandoned by the Trump administration. Today’s guest, Tom Josclelyn, thinks a series of upfront concessions to Tehran before the country’s leaders even come to the negotiating table would be an unwise foreign policy move for the Biden administration. “I’ve taken to calling it ‘servile diplomacy’ because it is very much from a submissive position,”Joscelyn tells Sarah and Steve.
