How Fitting

It's an art, and a science. And something we don't talk about enough in fashion. What do the physical properties of the fabric mean for the physical support of the body? We can read the info on the fabric header like the fiber content, stretch percentage, knit or weave structure, and gsm weight, but do we know how to use those to our advantage to achieve the look and feel we want in a garment? The data is structured, but the answers are squishy. Today's guest, Karen Poirier, proved it is possible to engineer a garment – using the physics, fabric properties, and seam structure – for a feeling. Her brand, Embargo, re-engineers support for full-busted women with bra-alternatives that prioritize comfort and wellbeing. In episode 134, we talk about the engineering that went into their Full Support Bra-Free Top and discover what good fit looks like for Embrago. Karen Poirier, the visionary designer behind Embrago (em-BRA-go), is transforming women's fashion with her innovative and sustainable approach. Embrago is more than just a clothing line; it's a movement towards ethical and compassionate living that empowers women to embrace a minimalist fashion footprint. For Karen, sustainability means creating multifunctional pieces that adapt to the natural changes in a woman's body. After years of managing a fuller bust through the changes of pregnancy, breastfeeding, and midlife, she dedicated herself to developing a bra-alternative that supports overall health and comfort without compromising on style. Her patented Body Responsive Fit™ system uses a new approach to built-in bust support that feels like a gentle embrace and ensures a perfect fit every day. This re-imagined system eliminates the pain and discomfort caused by traditional bras and automatically adapts to a woman's body changes as she experiences hormone and weight fluctuations, from pre- to post-menopause. Embrago's designs are crafted to be versatile, reducing the need for excess consumption. Each piece is ethically produced in small batches, using the softest organic cotton and high-quality materials that prioritize both the planet and personal well-being. Karen's mission is clear: to empower women to feel confident and comfortable, while also benefitting their health and the environment. Through Embrago, Karen is not only reshaping fashion categories but also transforming the way women think about getting dressed, encouraging mindful choices for a more sustainable future. What we learn about fit in this episode: Fitting the people How Embrago creates support without restriction for full-busted women The moment Karen knew that the product was finished The mindset shift that happens when women start wearing Embrago Fitting the performance Why Karen focused on seams in a market category that typically favors seamless construction  How to use the grainline of the fabric strategically for the garment's function Fitting the purpose How Embrago helps women break free from the social pressure to hide or compress a larger chest Why Karen started Embrago in the first place Fitting the production The factors that went into Embrago's pricing The fit-testing process for this innovative product People and resources mentioned in this episode: Embrago website Embrago Instagram Embrago Youtube Embrago email Karen's LinkedIn Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? Last week, the American government charged the former Cuban leader, Raúl Castro, with conspiracy to kill US nationals. They accuse him of playing a part in the downing of two planes in 1996, which were flying between Cuba and Florida. This comes after months of the US putting increasing pressure on the country. In January, President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on any country who supplied oil to the island, resulting in huge energy shortages ever since, with some parts of the country being without power for 22 hours a day. But Cubans have been living under a strict trade embargo for decades, so they are not unfamiliar with such hardships. José Carlos Cueto López of BBC Mundo is from Cuba, and knows exactly what it's like for people living in such challenging circumstances.  The UN says that at least 32 political prisoners have been executed in Iran since February this year. The UN's Human Rights Office has warned that the death penalty is increasingly being used to silence political dissent. Last year, Iran carried out 2,159 executions according to Amnesty International, the highest number since 1981. The Iranian government says that the vast majority are for drugs related offenses or murder. Ghoncheh Habibiazad of BBC Persian has been trying to find out more about the political prisoners who've been executed this year, and she told me about her findings. The Fifth Floor is at the heart of global storytelling on the BBC World Service, bringing you the best stories from journalists in the BBC's 43 language services. We're here to help you make sense of the stories making headlines around the world; to excite your curiosity and to get to grips with the facts. Recent episodes have investigated Russia's youth armies and how they make soldiers of Ukrainian children; featured the BBC team who were the first journalists to the site of the Nigerian school kidnappings and reflected the effects of internet blackouts in Iran, Uganda and India. If you want to know more about Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, and the legacy of Hugo Chavez; or how Vladimir Putin's network of deep cover spies operates; or why Donald Trump signed an executive order granting white South Africans asylum in the US, we have all those stories and more. This episode of The Documentary comes to you from The Fifth Floor, the show at the heart of global storytelling, with BBC journalists from all around the world.

Iran, the global energy crisis, and the case for permanently waiving the Cyprus arms embargo

With the war in Iran dragging on, its ripple effects are being felt around the world. Beyond the clear questions around regional security, stretching from the Middle East to Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, we are also in the midst of what could be an unprecedented and escalating global energy crisis as strikes on international shipping in the strait of Hormuz, which is critical to the oil and gas industry, have essentially shut this vital chokepoint. The war is also testing transatlantic unity, as President Trump warned in a recent interview with the Financial Times that “it will be very bad for the future of NATO” if European nations do not join the US in reopening the strait of Hormuz. So far, the message from European leaders is that this isn't Europe's war. Despite this message, developments in the Middle East impact Europe, and the case of Cyprus is not only raising questions in Brussels about the EU's ability to defend its own members, but in Washington as well, where the recent targeting of Cyprus is renewing efforts to permanently end the Cyprus arms embargo. Ian Lesser, Zissis Marmarelis, Damian Murphy, and Endy Zemenides join Thanos Davelis this week as we look into Trump's calls for Europe to join the US in the Straits of Hormuz, the unfolding global energy crisis and what it means for Greece, and why now is the time to end the Cyprus arms embargo. Taking us to our “I am HALC” segment, we're highlighting Lexy Prodromos, an emerging leader in the Greek-American community, where she is part of HALC's class of Leadership 2030 fellows, and a recognized leader when it comes to blockchain technology who is now making waves both in the US and internationally as COO at the Prodromos Stem Cell Institute. A little more info on our guests: Ian Lesser is the vice president and Brussels chief of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Dr. Zissis Marmarelis is a Stavros Niarchos Foundation Academy Fellow at Chatham House with a focus on the geopolitics of energy. Damian Murphy is the senior vice president for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress. Endy Zemenides is HALC's executive director. We welcome back Rick Rule for a wide-ranging discussion on the state of the resource markets. With renewed volatility in global energy markets and rising geopolitical tensions, we begin by examining the role oil prices play not only in the broader economy but also in the economics and risk profile of mining companies. Rick also offers some historical perspective, comparing today's environment to past energy shocks like the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo, and what those moments can teach investors about real asset cycles. From there we discuss the tone coming out of PDAC 2026, the current stage of the mining capital cycle, and why jurisdictional risk has become an increasingly important factor for investors evaluating projects around the world.
