POPULARITY
Ariel Zetina is as charming as she is talented—one of the many reasons she was named "Chicagoan of the Year for Pop Music" by the Chicago Tribune last month. A straight shooter with strong principles, her witty personality shines through on social media and in person. She radiates both best friend and boss energy. Musically, she wears her heart on her sleeve, infusing her personality into her DJing and production. Her sets and mixes are adventurous, moving from hard to soft to playful with precision. From producing theatre shows and opening for Beyoncé to releasing her RA-recommended debut album on Local Action in 2022, the smartbar resident approaches each venture with meaning and depth. That LP explored the complex experience of being a Belizean-American trans woman, using fiery house and techno to express vulnerability and triumph. Ariel Zetina's multifaceted personality is on full display in her RA podcast. There's baile funk-infused techno, crisp drum & bass and plenty of tracks from queer producers from all sorts of scenes, including Michael Cignarale, StrikeStone! and Perfect Lovers. It's a grand statement of power, flow and seriously good taste. @arielzetina Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/919
Festival season is here, and we're totally psyched for it!! Just back from Newport Folk Festival, Roadcase ventures into the depths at Pitchfork Music Festival for this special live interview episode -- the first of the summer -- and it's a hot one. In this episode, Josh sits down with three super-talented artists, each bringing a unique vibe to Union Park for this year's hippest indie Fest. Up first is Sen Morimoto, a Chicago-based performer, songwriter, producer and now co-owner of the new indie label Sooper Records. Outside of the box performer Axel Boman, who hails from Stockholm, Sweden, joins us "fresh off the boat" to tell us about his compelling brand of house and experimental music and regales us with tales of growing up in the hot Rave culture in Scandinavia. Then Ariel Zetina joins Josh to talk about the DJ scene in Chicago and how she has helped shape and support the Queer community in the Windy City. All amazing artists in their own way and we're here for it!! We're kicking off this year's Festival coverage here at Roadcase in style!! This week, Features director Jessi D met up with Ariel Zetina at Pitchfork Music Festival between weather delays in a park field house in Union Park. Ariel is a Chicago-based producer and DJ and made her official Pitchfork debut at this year's festival. They discuss the ensemble nature of her 2022 album, Cyclorama, what inspired her to become a DJ and her ascension to resident DJ at Smartbar, and planning her Pitchfork live show, complete with dancers and costume design. "I think my favorite thing is being able to get things to flow and move in the chaos of it all. The music doesn't stop for a number of hours, you have to be on your toes and live in the moment." - Ariel Zetina on why she loves DJing. Produced by Jessi D. Photo Credit: Alexa Viscius

Outro music: Bombshell by Ariel Zetina.
Read it in French: https://electrocorp.fr/2019/09/25/argot-american-dance-music-2/ We've been following the Chicago-based label Argot @argotmusic for years now, when its founder Steve Mizek was putting out stellar EPs from the likes of The Black Madonna, Octo Octa, Amir Alexander and many more. Since the beginning, the label's mission has always been the same: successfully promoting America's contemporary electronic music landscapes. Back in 2017, Argot released the first volume of "American Dance Music", a series of compilation showcasing homegrown U.S. talents, on which Steve assembled familiar faces as well as new ones, spotlighting diverse talents who make up American dance music. Two years later, the second volume is now coming out, offering another slice of the American scene as witnessed by Argot's founder. While not comprehensive, the 12 track digital compilation showcases a breadth of compelling sounds bubbling up around the U.S., encompassing everything from azure deep house and Midwest electro to glitchy pop and experimental compositions. We are thrilled to share with you "Icy Traverse", the opening title of the compilation. On this track, Chicago artist and Smatbar resident Garrett David @garrettdavid is teaming up again with Colin Johnson @colinsprojects(from Chicago too) after their collaborative work on Lobster Theremin in 2017. Here they deliver a pure house cut with a deep atmosphere filled with a beautiful energy. If you are familiar with Garrett David's work, you'll know what to expect. If not, we highly recommend you his entire discography, as well as Argot's. The compilation also features many fresh faces and contains debut tracks by Peoria, Illinois producer Bodyman and the Madison, Wisconsin-based duo Mazumi. Argot also welcomes to the fold Huey Mnemonic from Grand Rapids; Nikki Nair of Knoxville, Tennessee; Naeem from Pittsburgh; Washington DC duo Scattergood (Mike Petillo of Protect-U and Sami Yenigun of D.C. label 1432 R); Jeremy Castillo out of San Francisco; and veteran Atlanta producer TWINS. The Chicago contingent is strong as well, with tracks by Ariel Zetina, James N. Murray, and Richard Holhburn.
Midday on the Arts continues with a conversation about the future of the Single Carrot Theater. Last January, the 12 year-old Baltimore company announced that next month, it will leave the theater it’s called home since 2014. The final performances in their Remington space takes place this weekend. That show is called Pink Milk, by the trans woman playwright Ariel Zetina. It’s based on the life of the mathematician Alan Turing. (Midday’s theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck reviewed the play on our show last week.)Pink Milk is pretty typical of the kind of offering we’ve come to expect from Single Carrot, in that it is a regional premiere of an experimental play that one would be unlikely to encounter anywhere else. It is also the only play the company, now in its 12th season, has produced this year. Joining Tom to discuss the big changes ahead for the company are Genevieve De Mahy, the founding Artistic Director of Single Carrot, and Alix Fenhagen, who is serving as the company’s Interim Managing Director.

Ariel Zetina is a Chicago-based DJ, producer, and playwright. She is a resident at the legendary Smartbar and runs many of her own club nights in the city. Ariel has released music on Boukan Records (including underground club hit “Addy:” feat. London Jade), Club Chai, Sweat Equity, and Knightwerk, with a 2019 EP forthcoming on Maija.I wanted to talk to Ariel because she’s doing great things in Chicago, bringing both people and different kinds of music together. I went to one of her parties at the Hideout and had an amazing time, the music and the vibe were great and it was clear that both were very connected to who she is. And then she put out tracks like “Oil Rig” and “Chino” and I became a fan of her music. Also, I was very curious to ask about her work as a playwright.Digital Warmth is presented by Tone Madison. Follow the show on Twitter or reach out via email.
On today's very special episode of Songmess we are joined by journalist and nightlife nymph Cat Donohue who has curated a phenomenal playlist of underground club tracks by producers from Latin America and across the diaspora. Cat works the door at wildly popular monthly party Traición and frequently contributes to publications like Remezcla, Fact Mag, The Advocate, Them and more, where she puts a focus on politics of gender, sexuality, unique artistic expressions and music that'll make your booty clap. Today's conversation is all about Cat's journey, stories and the people she's met along the way, excellent club music and why it's important we honor and compensate artists fairly for the work they do. Today marks not only the release of our July podcast with the incredibly talented Ariel Zetina, but also a new direction for Sound Coalitions. Have you noticed a new addition to Sound Coalitions? That's Christopher Dotson- he's a part of the Direct to Earth techno collective in the Bay Area. DTE is known to bring some of the biggest names in underground techno to the Bay while supporting the scene and local artists. Now that it's Chris & Chris, we are excited to be working together to support various under-represented communities and share quality electronic dance music through Sound Coalitions. To start our partnership off right, we're bringing you a banging mix by Chicago’s Ariel Zetina. We got to know Ariel at the Gays Hate Techno gathering and let’s be real: she is on fire right now! Just this week the DJ, producer, and playwright was added to the Discwoman roster. She serves as Smartbar’s newest resident and throws several other nights around town including Rosebud at Berlin Nightclub and Ariel’s Party. Ariel’s genre-hopping, club-forward sound makes dance floors move. “If you are interested in the future of club and dance music, look no further than Ariel Zetina. A popular rising underground DJ, Zetina has begun making a name for herself in the city’s club venues and across the country (through the power of SoundCloud) for her eclectic and progressive sets. Straightforward hip-hop or bro-oriented EDM are never on the menu during her performances (thank goodness). Instead, listeners and partygoers will be immersed in Zetina’s glitchy, strange, yet totally fun dance music. Zetina aims to use sound and text works to transform club settings and performance spaces, making them more socially inclusive and sonically forward-thinking.This year, Zetina launched an ongoing residency at the Hideout, best known for its iconic dance parties.” – Britt Julious, Chicago Tribune
