In this first episode of Mastering the Hidden Margin, a special series on Build Better Work, host Tony Pericle pulls back the curtain on SPAs—special pricing authorizations and agreements, also known as deviations, chargebacks, ship-and-debit, and invoice verification. He's joined by industry veterans Scott Sinning and Cara DeGraff, who bring decades of experience across electrical distribution, medical supply, high tech, and enterprise rebate/pricing solutions. Together, they trace how SPA programs emerged from messy manual workarounds into one of the most important—and misunderstood—margin levers in distribution.Tony, Scott, and Cara also share their experience to describe what “good” SPA management actually looks like. They explore how digitization, data synchronization, and better analytics can reduce leakage, shrink reconciliation backlogs, and free sales teams from spreadsheet purgatory. If you're responsible for pricing, margin, or channel strategy in a distributor or manufacturer, this episode will give you the language, stories, and mental models you need to start mastering your hidden margin.Time Stamps:0:00 - Intro2:25 - Guests and SPA Highlights10:49 - Problems SPAs Solve16:24 - What is Invoice Verification17:05 - SPAs = Competitive Advantage18:33 - Magnitude of SPAs20:30 - SPAs as a Manufacturer24:31 - Bring Data to the Conversation26:21 - Charge Backs and Price Masking29:23 - Synchronized Data35:50 - ClosingGuests:Tony | tony@profitoptics.com: Tony Pericle is the founder of ProfitOptics and one of the most innovative minds in the distribution industry. Christmas Spending Without the Regret with Neile Simon

The holidays are meant to be a season of joy, generosity, and gratitude. Yet for many families, the celebrations come with a heavy dose of financial stress—stress that lingers long after the decorations are packed away. Our desire to bless others often leads to spending more than we planned. But it doesn't have to be that way.Recently, we sat down with Neile Simon, Certified Credit Counselor and Director of Strategic Partnerships at Christian Credit Counselors, to talk about how families can give meaningfully, stay within their means, and refocus on what Christmas is truly about.Creating a Realistic Holiday PlanMost people enter the holiday season with the best of intentions. We want to show love, bless others, and create special memories. But somewhere along the way, those intentions can derail.Neile explains that a mix of cultural pressures makes overspending almost effortless: holiday sales, credit card offers at checkout, “buy now, pay later” deals, and social media's endless highlight reels. Before long, the drive to be generous morphs into the belief that we must spend more to prove how much we care. And the consequences last far beyond December—financial stress, increased debt, and a January filled with regret rather than joy. The good news: overspending isn't inevitable. Neile suggests starting early and planning intentionally.1. Decide what you can truly afford. Account for all holiday expenses—gifts, food, travel, entertainment, and even small traditions that add up.2. Set a total spending limit. Let this number guide every decision throughout the season.3. Use cash or debit when possible. “When the money's gone, you're done—and that's okay,” Neile says. This simple boundary protects you from impulse spending.4. If using credit cards, treat them as tools—not the enemy. Used wisely, they can help you track your spending. The key is to stay disciplined and avoid taking on debt you can't comfortably repay.Ultimately, a budget is not a restriction—it's a path to freedom. It helps you enjoy the season without dreading the bill that arrives in January.Meaningful Giving Without OverspendingGenerosity isn't measured by price tags. In fact, the most meaningful gifts are often the simplest.Neile encourages families to focus on personal, relational giving:Handwritten notesHomemade treatsShared experiencesThoughtful, small gifts with clear intentionHer own family keeps gift-giving fun by setting spending limits and doing a white-elephant exchange. “It takes the pressure off,” she says, “and turns gift-giving into shared laughter and memory-making.”When togetherness becomes the priority over possessions, Christmas becomes both more joyful and more affordable. If You're Already in Debt, There's HopeFor families already carrying debt, Christmas can feel like a tug-of-war between generosity and financial reality. Neile offers this encouragement: give within your means—even if it means scaling back. Why? Because responsible giving protects your finances, your peace, and your future.“Think of it this way,” Neile says. “A relaxed, stress-free January is far better than stressing out after overspending in December.”Scaling back isn't failure—it's stewardship. And it models wisdom and faithfulness for your children.Refocusing on the True Meaning of ChristmasAmid the lights, the gifts, and the traditions, it's easy to lose sight of the heart of Christmas.“Christmas is a celebration of Jesus—the greatest gift ever given,” Neile reminds us. When our hearts are centered on Him, love and grace become the focus. Giving within our means allows us to celebrate joyfully, gratefully, and peacefully. And when we spend with purpose—anchored in Christ rather than consumerism—we experience a kind of joy that lasts long after the season ends.Need Help With Debt?If financial stress is weighing you down, Christian Credit Counselors can help. As a nonprofit ministry, they specialize in debt management—not debt consolidation—working directly with your creditors to lower interest rates and help clear the path toward freedom.Learn more at: ChristianCreditCounselors.org/Faith. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm an 84-year-old retired veteran, and my wife is 81. We're running out of money and need to tap our home equity. The VA offered a $400,000 loan, but would a HELOC or a reverse mortgage be better? How to Enjoy the Holidays Without Going Into Debt

The best gift you can give yourself this season might not come wrapped in paper or tied with a bow.The holiday season—from Thanksgiving through Christmas—can be one of the most joyful times of the year, but also one of the most stressful, especially when money's tight. What if you could celebrate the whole season without the financial regret that debt brings? The good news is—you can. With a few simple steps, you can enjoy the season, bless others, and keep peace in your heart and home.Start With a Spending PlanFrom the turkey to the tinsel, the holidays bring both delight and pressure. We want to give, to gather, and to make memories. But if we're not careful, the bills that follow can overshadow the joy.Begin by setting a total spending limit. Start with what you can afford, not what you wish you could. That number becomes your guardrail for the season. You're not being stingy—you're being wise. Every dollar you keep out of debt stays available for future generosity.Next, divide that total into categories—food, travel, gifts, decorations, charitable giving—whatever matters most to your family. Writing it down makes the plan tangible and easier to follow. If you're hosting Thanksgiving dinner, include the cost of groceries. If you're traveling, plan for gas or airfare now so you're not caught off guard later.Pay With Cash or DebitStudies show we spend about 30% more when paying with credit. Whenever possible, pay with cash or a debit card. If you must use a credit card, set a firm limit and stick to it.Some families even open a separate account just for holiday spending. It creates a natural boundary and helps avoid impulse purchases. There's real freedom in knowing you've already decided what's enough.Get Creative With GivingWhether it's hosting Thanksgiving dinner or wrapping Christmas gifts, remember—it's not about the price tag. A handwritten note, a framed photo, or a homemade pie can carry far more meaning than something store-bought.Acts 20:35 reminds us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” That blessing isn't about the cost—it's about the heart. If your children are old enough, invite them to help bake cookies for neighbors or make handmade gifts for grandparents. These shared experiences create memories that last far longer than the presents themselves. You can also use what you already have—redeem unused reward points or gift cards. It's one more way to keep spending within your means.Plan Ahead for Next YearWhen January rolls around, start setting aside a little each month for the next holiday season. Even $50 a paycheck can make a big difference. By next November, you'll be ready to give and celebrate without anxiety. If you prefer automation, set up a small transfer to a dedicated savings account. You'll hardly notice it leaving your budget—but you'll be grateful when the holidays return.Partner With a Faith-Based Financial InstitutionIf you're looking for a trusted place to save, consider our friends at Christian Community Credit Union (CCCU)—a financial institution that's been serving believers and ministries for over 68 years. They share your faith and are committed to helping you manage money in a way that honors God. Their savings accounts, digital tools, and personalized service can help you stay on track during the busiest time of the year.Right now, as a special offer to FaithFi listeners, you can receive up to a $400 bonus when you open a high-yield checking, savings, or Visa cash-back card. Visit FaithFi.com/Banking and enter the code “FaithFi” when you apply.Keep Your Focus on What Matters MostAs you prepare for Thanksgiving, take a moment to thank God for His provision. Gratitude is where wise stewardship begins. And as Christmas draws near, let your giving reflect the joy of God's greatest gift—His Son, Jesus Christ. When we give with grateful hearts and live with margin, we reflect His generosity to the world around us. Ultimately, this creates space for what matters most: faith, family, gratitude, and the celebration of Christ's birth.Even when finances feel tight, remember—lasting peace isn't found in numbers or careful planning, but in resting on God's faithful provision. That is the heart of faithful stewardship: learning to live not from scarcity, but from trust in the One who provides abundantly. And when you do, you'll find a joy that lasts long after the holidays are over.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I've been on and off Social Security disability after a head injury, but was later able to return to work. They kept sending me payments even after I notified them I was earning more than allowed. Now that my cancer has returned and I may need to stop working again, how should I handle this with Social Security? Should I visit their office in person to get it sorted out?My wife and I own our home outright, but have built up significant credit card debt over the past few years. We're debating whether to take out a home equity loan or a reverse mortgage to get back on track. Which option would you recommend? We're selling our home and deciding whether to use all the proceeds to buy our next house or invest some of them in our retirement accounts to increase our monthly income. Which choice makes the most financial sense?Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)Christian Community Credit Union (CCCU)Movement MortgageWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000. In this episode of Bean There Done That, host Phil Di Bella sits down with Larry Prosser, Executive Director of Beyond Payments, to unpack the Reserve Bank of Australia's proposed ban on card surcharges. They break down what this policy really means for consumers, merchants, and banks—and why the supposed “savings” for customers might actually backfire. Larry explains how surcharges evolved, why compliance matters, and the hidden costs bundled into merchant fees. Phil pushes the conversation into real-world territory: shrinking café margins, the politics behind RBA decisions, and the practical steps small businesses must take now. It's an eye-opening look into the payments industry, packed with insights every business owner and everyday consumer needs to hear. Key Topics and Themes The history of surcharging and RBA policy shifts Why banning surcharges may increase prices instead of lowering them The impact of shrinking café and hospitality profit margins How banks and POS providers bundle hidden fees into merchant services The ethical approach Beyond Payments takes with transparency and compliance The bigger picture: industry bodies, political motives, and small business survival About Our Guest Larry Prosser is the Executive Director of Beyond Payments, Australia's first fully compliant “fee-less” EFTPOS provider. Since 2013, Beyond Payments has helped thousands of merchants recover 100% of their merchant service fees through transparent and compliant surcharge mechanisms. Larry is a passionate advocate for small business, pushing for fairness, compliance, and practical solutions in the payments space. More at: beyondpayments.com.au Key Takeaways The RBA's proposed ban on surcharges may sound good for consumers but will likely push prices up across cafés and restaurants. Merchant fees are not “free”—bundled POS solutions often hide costs in other ways. Debit card fees remain one of the most unfair charges facing consumers today. Transparency, compliance, and constant vigilance are essential for small businesses when choosing merchant service providers. Small business survival depends on understanding merchant fees and demanding fairness from banks and fintechs. Have any spare change? Do you still use cash and coins? The US Treasury Department and US Mint announced that it will stop making pennies after it runs out of the blank templates used to make the coins, saving the government $56 million a year in materials costs.  There is no indication that pennies will be taken out of circulation, only that new pennies will not be produced. This move should have no impact on electronic purchases - ACH, Wire, Debit, Credit, etc.  A few news articles on the subject: https://www.axios.com/2025/05/22/penny-coins-end-production-2026 https://www.axios.com/2025/05/24/treasury-penny-production-trump-shopping-change This issue is not unique to the United States. Canada, Australia and New Zealand stopped producing their penny-equivalents years ago. The cost to produce $0.01 is now approximately $0.0369 per penny, causing a loss to the US Mint of approximately $85.3 million.  And our other coins are similarly expensive to produce: $0.05 nickel costs $0.1378 per coin $0.10 dime costs $0.0576 per coin $0.25 quarter costs $0.1468 per coin It may be time to start using all those pennies we're currently saving in jars and piggybanks.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1011: Today we're breaking down the early fallout from sweeping auto tariffs, Toyota's recalibrated EV strategy, and why Gen Z is ghosting credit cards.Show Notes with links:The 25% tariff on imported vehicles is forcing swift and varied responses from automakers, with some pulling back and others ramping up U.S. operations. The early shakeup shows just how disruptive the new trade landscape could become.Stellantis paused production at Canadian and Mexican plants and laid off 1,000 U.S. workers.Infiniti halted U.S.-bound production of the QX50 and QX55 “until further notice.”VW stopped rail shipments from Mexico; Audi is holding vehicles at U.S. ports post-tariff. JLR is temporarily pausing US shipments.GM is boosting pickup production in Indiana, and Mercedes may shift another model to Alabama.Ferrari and Ineos raised prices up to 11%, while Ford and Stellantis launched deep discounts to keep buyers interested.“Consumers will feel financial pain faster than they will see new jobs,” warned S&P Global's Stephanie Brinley.Once criticized for lagging in the EV race, Toyota is charting a new path with more in-house models and global production—but with tempered expectations. The automaker is still prioritizing flexibility as it balances EV growth with its hybrid-heavy portfolio. The Japanese manufacturer aims to launch 15 internally developed EVs by 2027, including several Lexus models.New production sites in the U.S., Thailand, and Argentina are planned to hedge tariff risks and improve delivery timelines. The target is 1 million EVs per year by 2027—down from earlier projections of 1.5 million by 2026.In 2024, Toyota sold just under 140,000 EVs, less than 2% of its global volume of over 10 million vehicles.A new survey reveals Gen Z's growing distrust of credit cards, with many opting for debit, cash, and peer-to-peer options instead. High APRs, confusing terms, and debt fears are driving a generational payment shift that could reshape future retail habits.68% of Gen Z say credit card bills cause stress; 51% say cards give them the “ick.”Debit (68%) and cash (67%) top Gen Z's preferred payment methods—only 35% use credit cards, with 82% of respondents overall saying credit cards are “financially dangerous.”57% of Gen Z admit they don't fully understand card terms, and 53% have been surprised by interest charges.“It doesn't make sense to pay 20%, 25% or 30% in interest just to earn a few percentage points in cash back,” said Ted Rossman, Bankrate senior analyst.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

While it's true that nonprofits often fail for lack of funding, there are reasons that they don't achieve funding or that they use it incorrectly and/or inappropriately. Here's my experience from eight boards, including chairing two of them: The boards are weak. They are made up of "names" who would seem to be significant, but who provide very little in terms of governance skills, strategic viewpoint, or even attendance. The executive director/CEO remains too long. The "shelf life" of these leaders is about seven years. After that, they stop serving the institution and the institution starts serving them. They create a tyrannical "fiefdom." No skin in the game. There must be a "give or get" minimum financial contribution from the board. They can't just play with "other people's money," and many granting foundations insist on such investment as a must for grants. They are not run as businesses. There is a budget to meet, strategic goals to achieve, the mission to be accomplished. They often approve budgets with illusory revenue sources, for example. They aren't professionally run. Just because you're a "volunteer" doesn't mean you have an excuse to be unprofessional. You need to meet accountabilities, show up, and do your job. Donors are not sufficiently romanced. Donors need to be "triaged" so that the highest donors receive the most recognition. One theater, in a fit of "woke" madness, actually put donors in alphabetical order in their playbill, so that no one knew who gave $5 or $50,000. That's just dumb marketing. They exhaust funds and credit lines with no idea of how to repay. Debit kills the arts in particular. There's no room to take risks or to contract for expensive rights. Politics overwhelm the value. It was just pointed out that every member of the board of National Public Radio, accused of being far too liberal and unfair in its reporting, is a Democrat. That wasn't an accident, and they're using public tax money. They default to tactics on the board, not strategy. Instead of talking about what to create to attract more patrons or donors, they discuss what meal to serve at the next fundraiser. Every organization is a business. You need customers/clients/members/audience/contributors. You need leadership and board members who know how to run a business and meet goals and financial requirements. Oh yeah: And you need term limits to remain contemporary and effective.

While Americans rely on debit transactions for the necessities of life, most are unaware of the networks that drive those transactions, nor are they aware that one company, Visa, has monopolized debit transactions, penalized industry participants that seek to use alternative debit networks, and co-opted innovators, technology companies, and financial institutions to forestall or snuff out threats to Visa's debit network dominance.” So begins the monopolization lawsuit filed on September 24 by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) against the country's largest card company, Visa Inc.On one level, the case is simple: The DOJ alleges a clear violation of laws protecting markets against monopolies. But the case gets more complicated when looking at the details, in part because payment systems are mostly invisible part of the financial ecosystem. In effect, the DOJ alleges that Visa is pulling the levers of a really opaque and complex system to preclude competition and squeeze fees out of banks and vendors for itself. To understand the complexities and implications of the case, Bethany and Luigi are joined by Kathryn Judge, Harvey J. Goldschmid Professor of Law at Columbia University. Judge is an expert on banking, financial crises, regulatory architecture, and intermediation design beyond finance. Her book, Direct: The Rise of the Middleman Economy and the Power of Going to the Source (HarperBusiness, 2022), was on the long list for the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award. Together, the three of them discuss both the surface-level and structural issues of an economy where consumers and small businesses are shortchanged on what is essentially a private sales tax on all debit-card purchases—and how to look for collective solutions when opt-outs aren't possible.Episode Notes: Also check out the ProMarket article “A DOJ Victory Against Visa May Not Help Merchants or Consumers” by Lulu Wang, Assistant Professor of Finance at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.

Have you gotten yourself into financial trouble in the past becuase of over extending yourself using a credit card? If you have, you're not alone. Knowing how to use credit cards as a beneficial tool is a game (that many of us are never taught), and each of us needs to determine if we know the rules to the credit card game and if we feel like we can follow the rules well to win the game. For some people, credit cards (when used well) can be an amazing tool to build credit and score cash back, miles, travel perks, and purchase protection. For others, credit cards are more of a temptation and cause more financial damage than any perks are worth.  In this week's episode of The Money Love Podcast I'm diving into the deep underbelly of the credit card industry with former VISA employee turned Sequin CEO, Vrinda Gupta. Vrinda had her financial "wake up moment" when she was denied from the credit card that she helped build. She then set out on her own to create Sequin, the first of it's kind debit card designed to earn women up to 6% cashback on self-care (think gyms, beauty stores, drug stores, and more) without perpetuating a cycle of credit card debt. Most credit cards earn rewards, but can get you in a cycle of high-interest credit card debt. Debit cards, while they keep you in budget, do not typically earn rewards. Sequin is the best of the both worlds, and earns you cashback -- on a debit card! This is your own money, so you can stick with a budget without sacrificing cashback rewards. Best of all, it's founded by women, for women and you will receive a custom credit card debt payoff plan to manage credit while earning cashback. There's no monthly fees, overdrafts, or minimums, and your checking account will earn high interest. In this conversation Paige and Vrinda talk about secrets the credit card companies don't want you to know, how credit cards are designed to keep you overspending, why it can be so tricky to get out of credit card debt once you're in it, and diving into Sequin, the debit card that Vrinda created to help women combat credit card debt for good. Trump was just shot! At a rally in Bulter, Pennsylvania, during Trump's speech, gun shots were heard just as Trump reaches for his ear and is taken to the ground by secret service. Join me on the podcast today as I react to the shocking news of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In this episode, I reveal the prophetic warning given by my father two years ago, predicting this very event.   GIVE TO MIRACLE WORD: Give by Debit or Credit:: https://miracleword.com/give Give by CashApp $MWgive Give by Venmo @MWgive Give by PayPal https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/miracleword MIRACLE WORD CHURCH:  Learn more about Miracle Word Church located in West Palm Beach, Florida by visiting https://miracleword.com/ FREE STUFF:  Sign up for our FREE magazine and download my FREE devotional called “Praise, Laugh, Repeat” at https://miracleword.com/live FOLLOW & CONNECT: Instagram @miraclewordchurch @tedshuttlesworth @carolynshuttlesworth Facebook https://www.facebook.com/miraclewordministries TRAVEL SCHEDULE:  Join us in a live revival meeting. What's going on with consumers? This is one of the trickiest puzzles of this weird economic moment we're in. We've covered a version of this before under the term "vibecession," but it's safe to say, the struggle is in fact real. It is not just in our heads. Sure, sure, some data is looking great. But not all of it. What's interesting, is exactly why the bad feels so much worse than the good feels good. Today on the show, we look into a few theories on why feelings are just not matching up with data. We'll break down some numbers and how to think about them. Then we look at grocery prices in particular, and an effort to combat unfair pricing using a mostly forgotten 1930's law. Will it actually help?
