In this episode Sarah, Mark and James continue their discussion of the book Bitch by Lucy Cooke where they explore menopause in humans and non-human animals and discuss those animals that have forwent males when they reproduce. The first conversation explored how orcas are an unusual mammal in that the males do not disperse from their mother's pod, but instead they retain a close relationship with their mothers. The ultimate momma's boy. Sarah discussed the various hypothesis for why women would actually go through menopause, and why it is an evolutionary puzzle. One of the hypothesis that Sarah thought had traction was the fact that human women at birth reduce their one million oocytes to about 300,000 at birth, and the number and quality of eggs continue to decline with age. The oocytes of a human female in stasis awaiting the monthly opportunity to develop into a fertile egg.We discussed why it is the female orca that experiences menopause and not the males. We finished the podcast discussing single sex albatross pairs who successfully rear offspring every year. James discussed seeing these birds raising their single offspring in the yards of a suburban neighborhood. Humans have encroached on much of the historical nesting sites of the albatross on the Hawaiian islands but Nevertheless, she persisted. Here is a picture of a baby albatross James took on Kauai where it is manipulating its parents by maintaining the baby downy feathers on its head while the adult feathers are on the rest of the body. We finished the podcast discussing the parthenogenic Mourning geckos that have colonized many of the islands of the Pacific since they can reproduce asexually. Virgin births have been observed in many chordates except in mammals. We discussed why that may be.A Mourning Gecko James photographed when doing field work in Kauai.Opening and closing music is "May" by Jared C. Balogh.Interlude music Confessions by Sudan Archives

It's our yearly tradition here at Queen Venerator as we're counting down our Top 100 Albums of 2022. To say that this was a good year in music would be a massive understatement. This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. Kennebec - Tall Tales (feat. Hemlock Ernst and Sudan Archives) from the 2022 album Without Star or Compass on Night Time Stories. While Eric Phillips has only been releasing cinematic instrumental soundscapes under the name Kennebec since 2020, his enchanting works have garnered attention and led to a number of incredible collaborations. Our Song of the Day, “Tall Tales,” sees the Portland-based artist team up with Samuel T. Herring of Future Islands under his rap moniker Hemlock Ernst and Brittany Denise Parks, better known as the LA-based musician Sudan Archives. The early single off his sophomore record Without Star or Compass is one of three tracks on the album that Herring contributes to but the only one under his rap alias. Over a guitar-strummed hook, Herring and Parks swap stream-of-consciousness verses and come together for heavenly harmonies on the chorus. While the lyrics are esoteric, ripe with references to nature, the seeming meaning revolves around our inability to fully know what another is thinking or feeling. Phillips had this to say about working with Herring: “I think our styles just resonated well with one another, and we clicked naturally. We sent some ideas back and forth remotely and then he flew out to Portland and we recorded all the vocals in three days together. It was so fun and inspiring – and really deepened my appreciation for his craft. He's such a nice guy and a total genius. Sam's lyrics really hit a beautiful balance between that sense of magic and folklore in the natural world that I'm after, while really bringing his own sense of narrative. He's really amazing at constructing lyrical concepts in a way that I think compliments my own strengths (and weaknesses).” Watch Future Islands' Live on KEXP at Home performance from 2020 and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In which the Curmudgeons counter one of the laziest conventional wisdoms in all of rock 'n' roll: that Muse is a self-serious, ridiculous ripoff of Radiohead that appeals to dumb people with bad taste. Diving in at the deep end after a summer hiatus, Dónal Dineen presents a guide to the most essential new music and re-issues from around the world. He strikes gold twice upon encounters with the enchanting song-world of Japanese artist Hatis Noit and the glorious amalgamation of sounds that comprises the compelling solo work of Californian violinist and vocalist Brittney Denis Parks who records as Sudan Archives. There's dispatches from the wild sonic frontier in the shape of the explosive vocalisations of They Hate Change from Florida as well as an example of why the high energy sound of Nigerian-born Obongjayar has been such a hit on the most discerning dance floors in 2022. Further evidence of how fertile the American underground is right now comes in the shape of the meticulous electronic compositions of Altrice from Arizona and the strangely beguiling atmospherics of Baltimore's Infinity Knives. There's time to hail a modern choral classic from the Emilia region of Italy by Silvia Tarozzi and Deborah Walker as well as pay homage to two lost classics from South African keyboard pioneer Rex Rabanye and Ukranian violinist and sonic innovator Valentina Goncharova. Oh, no, we've fallen in "The Parent Trap" and we can't get up. Join the Lens crew for the next episode in the Nancy/Nora series: Nancy Meyers' directorial debut starring Lindsay Lohan (times two... maybe four?). Before that, "Blonde," "Pearl," "Speak No Evil," "Saloum," and "The Woman King" are Now Showing. After talking about Meyers' Disney remake, they'll play Dead Ringers and figure out just how many multiples of Bette Davis really exist. Finally, they all have one more thing with Sudan Archives, Nathan Fielder, and (more) "Southern Charm." Next up, we welcome Executive Director of Cinema St. Louis Bree Maniscalco to talk about "Julie & Julia," Nora Ephron's swansong from 2009. Please share, subscribe, and review! September mit Halt an allen Stationen: Greentea Peng, Ari Lennox, Ozzy Osbourne, Built To Spill, Harvey Rushmore & The Octopus, Anna Erhard, Pet Owner, Santigold und Oliver Sim.

Sudan Archives is a singer, songwriter, producer, and violinist. She grew up in Cincinnati before moving to LA. Her music has been called "viscerally gorgeous" by The Guardian, and "stunning" by Pitchfork, who gave her in ‘Best New Music.' This year, she's releasing her second album, and one of the tracks on it is "Selfish Soul." She told me the idea for this song started when she asked her boyfriend, James (who is the rapper Nocando) to shave her head. Cutting off her hair made her reflect on her whole hair story, from experiences she had as a kid, to the cultural and racial issues that have historically surrounded Black women's hair. After a move to LA from Cincinnati, Sudan Archives celebrates domestic bliss via song on “Home Maker,” saying "It took nesting — building a home, investing in partners that were worth my investment — to shake my anxiety and depression."
This week's show covers new music from LA's Sudan Archives, a new single from Britain's Yungblud, a great tune from Detroit's Elzhi, produced by LA's Georgia Anne Muldrow, and a hot tune from London's Ibibio Sound Machine. For the archive pick this week, Mark digs up a lost gem from Berkeley, CA-based Darondo that was released in 1973, called “Didn't I.” This is a bohemian soul number, with dynamite vocals and an unexpected lead violin melody. Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a terrific week!
Sudan Archives - "Home Maker," a 2022 single on Stones Throw. Leave it to Sudan Archives to make domestic life sultry and seductive. After making the move from Cincinnati to her current home of Los Angeles, the acclaimed violinist/vocalist/producer (real name: Brittney Denise Parks) turned to home making to feel more grounded. Her first new single in three years reflects that. “It took nesting — building a home, investing in partners that were worth my investment — to shake my anxiety and depression,” she said in a press release. “For me, homemaking is a service to mental health and coping with fear and isolation. This song is about the effort put into making a relationship work and giving love a place to live.” Check out the video at the link below, directed by Jocelyn Anquetil, and revisit her 2019 KEXP session, filmed at THING! Fest in Fort Worden, WA. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
