The country is found on Central America's north eastern coast, bordered by Mexico, Guatemala and the Caribbean Sea. It's one of only two destinations in Latin America where English is the official language. This is a country that is happy with its own cultural diversity - being home to more than six ethnic groups in a country around the size of Wales. So how does Belize manage to weave so many cultures into a harmonious tapestry - wander with Phoebe to find out...Also coming up:An interview with National Geographic explorer and conservationist Jamal Galves aka The Manatee ManTravel Hack: Know your Belizean ethnic groupsTop 10 wildlife found on land and in the sea around BelizeMeet Dayter Rodriguez - the first female maker of Garifuna drumsDiscover how to pack for a land and sea adventureLearn all about our Wander Woman of the Month - Gwendolyn Lizarraga aka Madam Liz - fighter for equal rights for women and the poorContact Wander Womanwww.Phoebe-Smith.com; @PhoebeRSmith
Prosecutors have opposed Sean "Diddy" Combs' latest $50 million bail request, citing concerns over potential witness tampering and obstruction of justice. They allege that Combs has attempted to influence witnesses and manipulate public opinion from jail, referencing recorded calls where he directed his family to contact potential victims and shape narratives through social media campaigns. Combs, who faces charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, has been denied bail twice before due to perceived risks of flight and danger to the community. A hearing for this renewed bail request is scheduled for November 22.In our second segment...In late October 2024, radio personality Funkmaster Flex publicly criticized former rapper and current Belizean politician Shyne Barrow over statements made in the trailer for Shyne's upcoming documentary, "The Honorable Shyne." In the trailer, Shyne alleges he was the "fall guy" for Sean "Diddy" Combs during the 1999 Manhattan nightclub shooting incident. Flex responded by calling Shyne a "stone-cold-faced liar," disputing Shyne's portrayal of events and accusing him of fabricating his narrative. Flex also referenced past altercations involving Shyne and questioned his credibility, asserting that Shyne's version of the nightclub incident was misleading.Sean "Diddy" Combs, currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on charges including sex trafficking and racketeering, faces additional allegations of witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Prosecutors assert that Combs has attempted to influence potential jurors and evade law enforcement monitoring while incarcerated. They allege he used other inmates' phone access, unauthorized messaging services, and enlisted his children to create a social media campaign around his birthday to sway public opinion.Further accusations include Combs orchestrating a social media campaign involving his children to sway potential jurors in his favor. Prosecutors claim he directed his kids to make a seemingly heartfelt birthday video to generate sympathy and taint the jury pool. The video, shared on social media, featured his seven children expressing their love and support for their father. These actions have led prosecutors to argue against granting bail, citing concerns over potential witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Combs' trial is scheduled for May 2025. Sean "Diddy" Combs, the renowned American music mogul and entrepreneur, is making headlines in the music and film industry once again. However, this time the reason is a legal battle rather than a chart-topping hit. In a recent turn of events, Combs' legal team has reportedly issued a cease-and-desist order against Jamal "Shyne" Barrow's new documentary, titled The Honorable Shyne. A cease-and-desist order is a legal instrument utilized to halt potentially unlawful activity. In this instance, the recipient of the order means Shyne, a Belizean rapper, politician, and businessperson, and it further emphasizes the intricate crossroads between the worlds of music, law, and film. The Honorable Shyne, as the documentary is named, maps the journey of the artist from his early life to his ascent in the music industry, right through his legal troubles, and subsequent transformation into a political figure in his home country, Belize. What appears to have primarily triggered Combs' legal action is yet to be fully disclosed or understood, but certainly this halt brought an unanticipated twist in the release of this documentary.Sean Combs, who himself has been the subject of documentaries in the past, seems to take issue with this particular one. The information regarding what provoked such an action from Diddy's side is still vague. However, the circumstances suggest that the lawsuit potentially deals with matters about undisclosed information, hidden insights, or an unapproved portrayal. Otherwise, it might involve potential defamation or invasion of Combs' privacy. This legal incident adds yet another chapter to the often complicated relationship between Diddy and Shyne. Both figures have been significant players in the American music industry, with their paths often crossing, both creatively and controversially, tracing back to the early 2000's when Shyne was signed to Combs' Bad Boy Records. In conclusion, the cease-and-desist order against The Honorable Shyne documentary symbolizes far more than just a legal hiccup. It represents the ongoing dynamic between law, fame, privacy, and the power vested in representations, particularly in a world where the images and narratives of public figures are constantly being molded and disputed. As audiences, fans, and critics alike eagerly await for this battle to unfold, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the manifold aspects intersecting in the realm of celebrity culture. Whatever happens next, there's no doubt the situation will be watched closely.

Over the next two episodes, host Eric Clayton is going to take you on an adventure. We're going to travel to Central America, to a small country on the Caribbean Sea. A country that is both ancient and relatively new. A place that is both a melting pot of so very many cultures and ways of life, and yet is also the least populated country in all of Central America. We're going on pilgrimage to Belize. Eric was there earlier this year visiting the Jesuit communities. Jesuits have been in Belize since 1851, when members of the English Province came over from nearby Jamaica. Ever since, Jesuit have played a foundational role in the development of the Catholic Church in the country — even before it was a country. And that last bit is important. The Mayan people lived and thrived in that land for centuries before Europeans arrived in the early 1500s. But when the Spanish conquistadors arrived — and soon after, British pirates — the Mayan people suffered, dying from conflict as well as disease. The country as it's known today became independent in 1981. Before then, since 1862, Belize was declared part of the British Empire and known as British Honduras. As a result of the relative new-ness of the country, Belizeans are still in the process of discovering their own identity, of making known what it means to be a citizen of Belize. So, what role are the Jesuits playing in all of this? As you'll hear from today's guest, Fr. Brian Christopher, SJ, the superior of the Jesuit community in Belize, the Jesuits are called to accompaniment. Fr. Brian is focused on walking with Belizeans in discovering what it means to be Catholic and Belizean is this moment. This is part 1 of a two-part series on Belize. Next week, we'll journey to a different part of the country. In the meantime, check out this video featuring Fr. Brian and some of the lay leadership in Belize: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cLzGsVsxRs

You will hear heavy to moderate rain on a metal roof in a tropical dry forest. At first, it will sound like a waterfall, but it quickly tapers off to less rain and more local birds—and a chicken! I recognized one bird! So, yesterday, I got a text message from my brother-in-law. He recorded some rain in Belize and sent a picture of a table surrounded by screened walls under a metal roof. Did I want that audio? “You bet your sweet Asperecreme,” I said. I didn't say that, but that was my general feeling about having audio of a rainstorm in a country nearer to the Equator than I have ever been. Thank you for capturing and sharing the audio, Mike! I know I just released a long episode yesterday and should wait to post (for my own sake), but honestly, I would like to get this out before Beryl. This is a perfectly normal Belizean heavy rain storm that isn't related to Beryl. Also, my thoughts are with everyone in the path of that storm. This strikes me as a minisode. People do that in the podcast world, right?

https://open.spotify.com/show/2BsfYRiIzhDgs6EBByeUuL?si=c7f306c63a1d467a Dune is a 1984 American epic space opera film written and directed by David Lynch and based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel Dune. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The soundtrack was composed by the rock band Toto, with a contribution from Brian Eno. Its large ensemble cast includes Kyle MacLachlan's film debut as young nobleman Paul Atreides, Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell, Virginia Madsen, José Ferrer, Sean Young, Sting, Linda Hunt, and Max von Sydow. The setting is the distant future, chronicling the conflict between rival noble families as they battle for control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. The planet is the only source of the drug melange (spice), which allows prescience and is vital to space travel, making it the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe. Paul Atreides is the scion and heir of a powerful noble family, whose inheritance of control over Arrakis brings them into conflict with its former overlords, House Harkonnen. Paul is also possibly the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure expected by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. After the novel's initial success, attempts to adapt Dune as a film began in 1971. A lengthy process of development followed throughout the 1970s, during which Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott unsuccessfully tried to bring their visions to the screen. In 1981, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired Lynch as director. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $30.9 million from a $40–42 million budget. “I didn't go back to Belize until I was 30,” says author and writing coach Joey Garcia. “I was in a crisis. I'd done all the things I was supposed to do to be successful… but the corporate life was not at all what I imagined it would be.” It was then that she said Yes to an invitation to return to the land where she was born and found herself face-to-face with a people who needed her help. While there, she met the local Catholic Bishop. “If there's anything I can do for you,” she said, “Just let me know.” “You can put on a teacher training,” he said. She stumbled to respond. Never in her wildest dreams could she have imagined that this would be his request. The next Yes proved to be a transformative one —one that led to the launching the nonprofit Rise Up Belize created to improve the educational opportunities for Belizean children. As you listen to this episode, consider:Are there opportunities for you to step outside your comfort zone?Have you felt the call to to take a risk? In 2016, Hurricane Earl devastated Belize, causing over $100 million worth of damage and displacing thousands of Belizeans across the country. But humans were not the only victims of the storm. Deep in the mangroves, an infant manatee was separated from her mother and washed onto the mainland. She was so tiny when Jamal Galves found her, with her umbilical cord still attached. He named her Hope. After 7 years in rehabilitation, Hope the Manatee is soon to be released back into the wild. But as development and climate change continue to affect the waterways she calls home, what will her future hold? Hope's savior, Jamal Galves, also known as The Manatee Man, was just 11 years old when he began his journey in manatee conservation, volunteering with a crew of scientists in the small Belizean fishing village where he grew up. At one time, manatees were such a common sight in the area that the village of Gales Point Manatee itself was named after them. But today there are less than 1,000 Antillean Manatees left in this part of the world. In the 25 years since his first volunteer expedition, Galves has worked with hundreds of these animals, but Hope holds a special place in his (and the nation's) heart. Follow Jamal on Instagram. In 2020 Belize was broke. Again. This small, climate-vulnerable, Central American nation is home to the western hemisphere's longest barrier reef. And it was about to default on a debt of over half a billion dollars. Enter an American NGO... The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is the world's largest conservation charity. TNC made an offer to the government of Belize: it would help restructure the debt, if Belize would channel the savings made into its precious coastal resources. In 2021, the deal became reality – creditors were paid off, and investors found for the new, so-called ‘blue bond.' Belize's debt shrank by 12% overnight. A win-win, right? But as Linda Pressly finds on a trip to Belize for Assignment, the ‘blue bond' hasn't been universally welcomed. There are concerns about an international NGO having influence in a poor nation, and arguments about which Belizean marine organisations have benefitted from the new investment. And there is one unresolved question: what does the ‘blue bond' agreement mean for the potential future exploration of offshore oil in Belizean waters? Presenter/producer: Linda Pressly Sound engineer: Neil Churchill Editor: Penny Murphy (Photo: Replanting corals to restore Belize's barrier reef is critical work in an era of climate emergency. Across the African Diaspora, Black land rights are being violated. At the peak of black land ownership after the civil war, African American farmers owned 16 million acres of land (Francis, 2023). Today, the cumulative value of African-American land loss due to land dispossession is $326 billion (Francis, 2023). Black land dispossession in the United States is not an isolated incident. Land dispossession also occurs across the African diaspora in Central America. In this episode, Hervan Morgan a Belizean activist, talks about Serro, which is land that is collectively owned by the Garifuna population. We discuss the importance of Serro and black land ownership in the context of the Garifuna population, Central America, and the world more broadly. " The world right now as we live, as we journey through this earth. We don't have high understanding, a deep understanding of justice and fairness. It was something spoken about by Jesus Christ for many years, justice and fairness. And so Serro is all about fairness." ~Hervan MorganResources for this EpisodeDr. Dania V. Sanyu Estelle is the author of "The History (Mystery) of the Tarot," the opening chapter of Tarot for Pregnancy by Brittany Carmona-Holt. Sanyu is a Claircognizant ("clear knowing") Soothsayer ("truth teller") that is also known as "The Word Witch" because of her deep love for word origins (etymology) and word culture (philology). These natural inclinations are bolstered by an 11+ year practice of Taoism, as well as a 10+ year relationship with Ifa, the indigenous tradition of the Yoruba people of now-Nigeria. Sanyu is known for her straightforward card reading style and her way with words via writing, speaking and singing. A "1st generationish" US-American of Ugandan and Belizean descent, Sanyu was born, bred and buttered in Los Angeles on land traditionally stewarded by the Tongva. Many dream up the future, but it belongs to their descendants. Thus, Sanyu is the best thing that came out of her Colonizer's lineage. She uses their/her own ancestry to denounce their indoctrination into the invention of Whiteness through colonization. They are lucky to have her and they ensured not only that she is, but what she is. Hey, everybody, this is the TCP, and I am John Stamp. First off did you guys see the artwork Jeff Hayes at Plasmafire graphics worked up for Wraith of Sheltermount. Wraith was my experiment in writing a fantasy novel. From the start, Wraith was going to be an indie title. I wanted to do the whole thing myself, so I hired the editor, and did the cover myself. I thought I did pretty good on the cover and it tested well but when I started working with Jeff to upgrade the covers on my other titles, I knew I had to do Wraith. And I was right, he knocked it out of the park. I'll include it in the show notes. I already put it up on the socials. Second, continuing my wholehearted thanks for your support for Brother's Keeper, just released on Audible. Thank you for all the comments and compliments you've sent. I want to know what you want to hear next, Where Angels Sing, Spoilers #2, Wraith of Sheltermount, or Shattered Circle. Leave a comment. Last, Wild Blue Press still has Blood Red Ivory on sale for $2.99. If you haven't read one of my novels yet, Blood Red Ivory is a great place to start. Tonight, I'm talking to Rob Sands, Iowa's current State Auditor and true crime author. As Iowa's chief public corruption prosecutor, Rob uncovered the largest lottery rigging scheme in American history and detailed the case in his book, The Winning Ticket: Uncovering America's Biggest Lottery Scam. Both a story of small-town America and a true-crime saga about the largest lottery-rigging scheme in American history, The Winning Ticket follows the investigation all the way down the rabbit hole to uncover how one man was able to cheat the system, winning jackpots over $16 million. He went more than a decade without being caught—until Rob inherited the case. The Winning Ticket is an inside look at one of the most complicated yet seat-of-your-pants financial investigations and prosecutions in recent history. Just as remarkable as the crime are the real-life characters met along the way: an honest fireworks salesman, a hoodwinked FBI agent, a crooked Texas lawman, a shady attorney representing a Belizean trust, and, yes, Bigfoot hunters. That's correct, I said Bigfoot hunters. This was a fun interview. Scarlet macaws are icons of the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. But in the Central American country of Belize, scarlet macaws are disappearing as poachers steal their chicks for the international pet trade.Scott Solomon speaks with Dr. Boris Arevalo, a biologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society, who is working to protect these spectacular birds by any means possible, including camping at the base of the trees where they nest and rearing chicks until they're large enough to be safe from poachers. A native Belizean, Dr. Arevalo became a conservation biologist after learning about the threats facing the species he grew up with, including scarlet macaws, and noticing how few of the researchers working in the rainforests near his home were from Belize. Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Arevalo and his team, poaching rates have plummeted and every chick that the team has reared over the last six years has been successfully reintroduced into the wild. This episode of Wild World features music from Belizean musical group The Garifuna Collective: https://www.garifunacollective.com/ Wildlife Conservation Society - Belizehttps://belize.wcs.org Friends for Conservation and Development, a Belizean NGO working to manage and protect Belize's Chiquibul Foresthttps://www.fcdbelize.org More about Belize's scarlet macaws:https://belizebirdconservancy.org/scarlet-macaw-project Mentioned in this episode:Lindblad ExpeditionsLindblad ExpeditionsThe Rice Alumni Traveling Owls program offers exciting intellectual itineraries to destinations across the globe.
