For the series finale, we go back to the Fort. Join us as we bring you the sights and sounds we experienced at Fort Adams as Newport Folk returned after a necessary break in 2020, and presented their six-day, half capacity 2021 festival, Folk On. We'll take you from the meaningful first notes sung by the first performers to grace the stage, Resistance Revival Chorus, to one of the last - Lake Street Dive, and their tribute to beloved member of the folk family and former WFUV Program Director, the late Rita Houston. We also hear from Andrew Bird and Hiss Golden Messenger's MC Taylor about their return to performing and paying homage to John Prine, from mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile about the magic of Newport and why it continues to gives him hope, and the kismet journey of Allison Russell organizing and performing during the most talked about set at Folk On, Sunday night's 'Once and Future Sounds', curated by, and featuring women of color, with a very very special guest. We also check in with Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Yola, Newport Executive Director Jay Sweet, and many other artists, fans and members of the Folk family about their experiences at Folk On, their reflections of the past 18 months, and where we are headed. Through it all, the feeling of family and community is ever present, giving us the courage to take tentative steps forward, leaning into the truth and power of music, and the magic that happens when we dream together. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. Executive producers are RJ Bee and Christina Collins. We're hearing a lot about diversity and inclusion these days (which is great!) but as we'll learn in this episode, those two words and what they stand for are at the very core of what guided the earliest days of Newport Folk and Jazz over sixty years ago, continuing to this day. And as we know, there is still much work to be done to make our world a just and equal place. Listen in as the women of Our Native Daughters share the experience of their powerful performance at Newport in 2019, their mission of amplifying the perspectives of Black American women from the time of slavery through the present, and discuss the ongoing need for better representation across genres - in particular Americana and Country - that have their roots in the black community, and at events like Newport Folk. Amplifying women's voices, and women of color, is an important part of this conversation, too, and Yola speaks on the importance of The Highwomen's debut at Newport Folk and Brandi Carlile's all female headlining set, as well as her own sense of purpose in occupying and owning space in what is currently an overwhelmingly white genre. We dive into the history of Newport and why the insistence racial equality and diversity of its lineups was an especially personal mission of George Wein's - one that he carried to New Orleans when creating Jazz Fest alongside the parents of Preservation Hall's Ben Jaffe. and how that festival in turn helped to integrate New Orleans. And Colin Meloy and Judy Collins join us to talk about folk music's history as a tool for organizing and empowering the disenfranchised, especially through the voice of Pete Seeger. The fight continues to surround hate and force it to surrender. Festival Circuit: Newport Folk is presented by Osiris Media, and hosted by Carmel Holt. It is co-written, co-produced and edited by Carmel and Julian Booker, who is also the series' audio engineer. Production assistance from Zach Brogan. The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers

Joe Boyd has had many job descriptions over the course of his nearly sixty-year career in music, and there was simply no way to cover everything in this conversation. That said, Paul and Joe focus on Boyd's important new book, And The Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music, and themes of cultural cross-pollination in music, the birth of hip hop and ska, the reason Hitler spared the life of virtuoso Roma guitarist Django Reinhardt, what happened with Nick Drake, and Boyd's phenomenal earlier book, the memoir, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s.  As a music producer, Boyd has delivered records by Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Taj Mahal, Fairport Convention, Richard and Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny. He tour-managed European dates for Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and was a production manager at the 1965 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, before flying off to open Elektra Records' UK office in London where he and John Hopkins opened the UFO club, giving a psychedelic home to Pink Floyd and others.  In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to work for Warner Brothers Films (Deliverance, A Clockwork Orange, and the documentary Jimi Hendrix). In 1979, he worked for Lorne Michaels' film company, Broadway Pictures, and the following year, launched his own label, Hannibal Records, releasing works by John Cale, Richard Thompson and more, while bringing global artists such as ¡Cubanismo!, Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Trio Bulgarka, and Songhai, to western audiences.  Interview with Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper 2024   Launched roughly two decades ago in Portland, OR, Blitzen Trapper garnered early attention with a series of self-released albums before breaking out internationally with a pair of critically acclaimed LPs (2007's Wild Mountain Nation and 2008's Furr) that would cement their status at the forefront of the modern indie folk revival. Rolling Stone hailed the band's “hazy, psychedelic Americana,” while NPR praised their “explosive live performances and infectious roots-rock swagger,” and The New York Times compared their songs to Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Dates with Fleet Foxes, Wilco, and Dawes followed, as did festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, and Coachella, among others. In the years to come, the band would go on to release six more similarly lauded studio albums, culminating with 2020's Holy Smokes Future Jokes, which Mojo proclaimed “sound[s] like the Beatles at Big Pink.” There are numbers so vast they exceed the scope of human reckoning, concepts so immeasurable they surpass our capacity to understand. On their radiant new album, 100's of 1000's, Millions of Billions, Blitzen Trapper make peace with the unknowable, surrendering themselves to forces beyond their control as they explore the infinite with a broad mind and an open heart. Inspired by singer/songwriter Eric Earley's fascination with Buddhist texts and meditation (the title comes from a phrase that appears over and over in the Mahayana sutras), the album offers a captivating take on rebirth and transcendence, and the circularity of existence, navigating its way through the space beyond dreams and reality, beyond gods and mortals, beyond life and death. The songs here are as sincere as they are surreal, rooted in rich character studies and deep reflection, and unfolding like a riddle-filled journey that asks many questions and offers no answers. The production is intoxicating to match, blending lo-fi intimacy and trippy psychedelia into a mesmerizing swirl of analog and electronic sounds. Add it all together and the result is a gorgeous, sprawling collection wrapped in lush layers of synthesizers and washed out electric guitars–a poignant, expansive exploration of perception and purpose that manages to look both forwards and backwards all at once. SHEROES is on The Road To Joni, but in this episode we discover that sometimes that road is a bridge. A bridge to healing. A bridge to holding your own. A bridge to a new creative path. A bridge from one generation to another. Episode 4 of the Road To Joni begins at the SHEROES studio in upstate New York with 5x platinum recording artist and activist Natalie Merchant. A long time friend of host Carmel Holt, they discovered that they were both Joni Mitchell fans at a 1999 at breast cancer benefit concert that Carmel organized and Natalie headlined. The closing song from that show was a cover of Joni Mitchell's “All I Want.” 25 years later, Natalie Merchant sits down with Carmel to reflect on her road to Joni, talks about crying at her kitchen table after missing Joni's return at Newport Folk 2022, and shares an exclusive listen to a previously unreleased recording of her cover of "All I Want" from her personal archives. Then, it's on to Newport Folk Fest 2024, where 4x Grammy Award Nominee Madison Cunningham (who also missed Joni's 2022 Newport performance) recalls listening to Court and Spark and feeling like Joni was looking into her soul. The self-taught guitar and songwriting prodigy tells us that her road to Joni is more of a bridge, partly because of all the literal bridges she crossed while listening to Joni's music, but the deeper metaphor she uncovers during this conversation reveals that Joni Mitchell provided Madison a bridge to cross the “moat” of her religious upbringing to a place that opened up not only her musical world, but made her available for all the opportunities that found her.

It's time for the final installment of this year's in-person interviews I conducted at the legendary Newport Folk Festival which took place in Newport, Rhode Island, July 28-30. First up, my friends Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran of Illiterate Light stopped by to chat with me about the Bike Stage that they hosted, curated and operated. Jeff and Jake -- a hard-core rocking two-piece by day -- have created a sustainable and entirely off-the-grid solution to set a shining example of how we can mitigate the environmental impact of the live music ecosystem. This is the embodiment of Think Globally, Act Locally!!Next up, I spoke to Jake Ewald of Slaughter Beach, Dog, a Newport Folk first-timer whose alt-folk brand of artistry was a perfect fit for the Harbor Stage audience. I talk to Jake about his powerful songwriting and how very unexpected it was for him to even be at Newport Folk. We share tons of laughs as Jake's comedic timing is spot-on. Slaughter Beach, Dog's new album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling will be out September 22.I also had the pleasure of sitting down with Erich Huffaker and Mariam Diakite of Orchestra Gold, a band with roots both in Oakland, CA as well as Mali, West Africa.  I talk with Erich and Mariam about the African Psychedelic Rock movement and how African Dance is integrated into the ethos of this band, whose mission is to "spread healing and community through the universal gift of music." Amen. And to close down the 2023 Folk Fest series, I had a gem of a convo with Newport natives Evan St. Martin and Dave Sarazen of Laden Valley.  The first act to hit the stage this year, it was a surreal experience for sure, and they both related to me just how incredibly special it was for them, after years of attending the festival as fans, to actually be up there performing one of their rare live shows. This was an example of the pure joy of live performance for both fans and the artists themselves. It has truly been an honor to bring all these amazing artists to the Roadcase audience. Newport is a truly special experience for artists and fans alike, and I'm glad I can bring some of that excitement and musical joy to all of you.  See you all at Newport 2024, and in the meantime, Rock On!!

The Newport Folk Festival Series continues and I'm really excited to bring you this outstanding and diverse group of artists for the penultimate chapter of in-person interviews I conducted live at Fort Adams. I'm kicking off this installment with the amazing singer songwriter Mereba, whose folk / soul hybrid style of artistry is nothing short of stunning.  I have a super chill convo with Mereba, a truly gentle soul -- and a massive Bob Dylan fan -- who had dreamt of playing at Newport Folk. Next, it's Bluegrass time in the Media Tent, as I having a rousing and super fun conversation with the one and only Bluegrass legend and 15-time Grammy winner, Jerry Douglas. It's a laugh a minute as Jerry and I about how traditional bluegrass has morphed into its modern form while still respecting its roots.  I then attempt to use my high school French skills (but mostly the interpreter) in my convo with Jupiter Bokondji of Jupiter and Okwess, who comes from the Congo by way of Berlin to bring us his magical mixture of African beats, dance moves, and psychedelic rock. I talk to Jupiter about his role as a trailblazer and he explains to me the secrets of Okwess: how he nourishes the world with his musical vibes.  Rounding out Part 4 and taking our souls and spirits higher is The Harlem Gospel Travelers: Ifedayo Gatling, George Marage and Dennis Bailey. They talk to me about how you don't have to be a Believer for gospel and to raise you up and make you feel it.  Their sets are a true inspiration and further proof that the power of music is REAL. I'm so grateful to be able to bring you inside the Media Tent with these amazing artists who each bring such a unique and indelible vibe to the stage, into our lives and beyond.  Enjoy and Rock On!!

The Newport Folk Festival vibe is in full-effect as I swing into the third segment of this illuminating five-part in-person interview series, this time around featuring five dynamic artists from the worlds of Folk, Americana, Roots and Country and each one performing for the first time at Newport Folk. Join me, Josh Rosenberg, as I talk to Jaime Wyatt about how being super comfortable in her own skin has transformed her life; and she's on a roll now with a new album, Feel Good, coming out November 3. I'll also have a mellow chat with Abraham Alexander who has an amazing -- and at times sadly tragic -- story which he recounts to me and has documented in his wonderful debut album SEA/SONS.  In the third slot, I have a simply delightful and fun convo with rising star and all-around great hang, Raye Zaragoza, whose strong spirit embodies a sense of openness and inclusivity, paving her way as an advocate for Women's Rights and greater representation for People of Color.  And to round out this amazing episode, I talk to Aaron Vance and Tylar Bryant, who are part of the Black Opry collective and talk to me about their lifelong devotion to Country music and how Black Opry gave them opportunities they didn't think were possible for young black artists searching for inspiration. This is truly a wonderful collection of unique and talented artists and I'm here to give you all the interviews direct from Newport Folk!! We're talking mental health this week with Chayim Newman and Zack Borer of Amber Health, a new venture designed to address the mental health crisis in the live music industry with broad-based solutions designed to ease the constant burden faced by the true road warriors out there working to present amazing live shows.  Chayim is a PhD in Clinical Psychology and Zack is a Marriage and Family Counselor and together, they work tirelessly to help those faced with tremendous stress on a daily basis. While last month was indeed Mental Health Awareness Month, Zack and Chayim are constantly fighting a battle and providing support to help stem this true crisis in mental health faced by those who bring us the live music we love so much. In the industry, the rates of depression, anxiety and suicide risk are 5-10 times greater than those in the general population, and this sobering statistic alone underscores how truly serious the problem is. Amber Health works with large organizations such as Playa Luna Presents (fka CID), Newport Folk & Jazz Festivals and the Country Music Association, among others, to help manage the staggering pressure and anxiety present on the frontlines.  Roadcase supports all those fighting to battle the industry's mental health crisis and Amber Health stands strong in making this a better environment for all those involved.  Come learn about these true heroes who are working behind the scenes to make this a safer and more emotionally supportive industry. For more info about Amber Health:https://amber.health/For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

When Izzy Heltai's Mom took him to Newport Folk Festival as a kid, Izzy would never have believed he'd be playing that very stage roughly a decade or so later, but lo and behold, dreams do sometimes become reality. But that road has not been an easy one for Izzy.  As a trans person, self-realization had been forced upon him in a very real and striking way. And as a young trans youth, Izzy was forced to know himself far more than some people ever will; yet his struggle with identity has made him the person he is today. As a result, the authenticity and barebones realism in his artistic output is even more striking. Not only has Izzy been writing songs since he was 16 years old, but he's a true Road Dog -- slogging out time in his van driving across the country, touring in true DIY style. Now having performed at Newport Folk, as well as Bonaroo, SXSW and ACL, Izzy has truly hit his stride. His lovely debut EP, Day Plan (5 songs Written 4 the End of the World), showcases his neo-folk vibe and authentic self in a compelling and down-to-earth fashion. His recent performance at the Love Rising Benefit at Bridgestone Arena in Newport to support the movement against anti-trans legislation has been a highlight of his year thus far and he will be playing Outside Lands Festival in August. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And as the weather warms up and music festival season starts, so many artists will hit the road to do what they do best - share their music, live-in-person, with the world, and bring joy to millions of people. But the challenges of being a touring artist can take a terrible toll on creators' mental and physical health. In a 2022 paper in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, Dr. Chayim Newman and Zack Borer - revealed some sobering statistics from a 239-question survey of more than eleven hundred touring professionals. They discovered that people working in the music industry have rates of depression, anxiety and suicide risk five to 10 times higher than the normal population. That's an astonishing statistic, but probably not surprising to many of our members who spend much of the year on the road facing many challenges. Newman and Borer recently launched Amber Health, a company that offers a broad suite of mental health services to help treat the root causes of this mental health crisis and to provide solutions for the music industry. To date, with science-based research under their belt, they've worked with such organizations as the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, the Country Music Association, Live Nation as well as top artists in the industry. In an illuminating conversation, Newman and Borer share insights into the unique challenges artists face as working music professionals and some of the ways we can take care of ourselves and each other. Their catalog has amassed hundreds of millions of streams, garnered key press (NPR Music, Rolling Stone, The Washington Post) and radio support, and gained a loyal live following, with sold-out shows and festival spots at Boston Calling, Newport Folk, and Calgary Folk. After a major car accident, the onset of the pandemic, and the departure of a band member, the duo have been learning to roll with the punches. "We were able to step away from a lot of the big three-part harmonies and for the first time we recorded most of the album live. We try to let change inspire us, even when it comes with difficulty.“ It's an artistic statement that doubles as a life mission. The pair both emphasize that they've learned to navigate complicated situations, including their struggles with depression, which often color their songs.
