Chicago DJ and all-around music man Jesse De La Peña hosts Vocalo's 5 O'Clock Mix and Friday Night DJ Series, and plays a key part in shaping the station's sound. Growing up all around Chicago, Jesse started out as a DJ in his early teens — inspired by his mother's disco records, Chicago's hip-hop scene and the diverse music broadcasting on local radio stations. He joined Team Vocalo in 2017 as a music curator, going on to establish the Vocalo DJ collective and shape the station's sound into what you hear today. This is what his Chicago sounds like. As Vocalo's terrestrial signal shuts down at the end of May, Vocalo audio and community storytelling producer Ari Mejia highlights members of the Vocalo Team for the last several segments of “This Is What Chicago Sounds Like.” Jesse's shows, the 5 O'Clock Mix and Friday Night DJ Series, are scheduled to end on May 28. This segment of “This Is What Chicago Sounds Like” was edited and produced by Ari Mejia. Follow Jesse on Instagram @jdlp and Twitter @jessedelapena.

Lori Branch, Lady D and VITIGRRL are the Good Girls, a Chicago DJ trio that's “not good for girls, just good.” With Branch's mixes dating back to the ‘80s and Lady D's back to the mid-‘90s, the DJs have long-standing roots in multiple generations of Chicago house music. The trio keeps the sound and spirit of house music alive, honoring the femme and LGBTQ pioneers who came before them. They celebrated their fourth anniversary this week, and will be performing at ARC Music Festival this summer. This interview was edited and produced by Nudia Hernandez. It originally aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia in the Afternoons on March 19. Keep up with the Good Girls on Instagram @goodgirlsdjs.
The Phantom strikes again… After years of distance from playing Chicago shows, DJ Phantom 45 returned to the drum and bass scene to perform at West Fest in July 2023. Before his set at the street festival, the DJ sat down with Vocalo host (and longtime friend) Jesse De La Peña to outline his career — from drum and bass DJ to club management and back — and his new mixes from 2023. This conversation was produced and edited by Jesse De La Peña, recorded on June 26, 2023. Listen to Phantom's mixes on Mixcloud @TheRealPhantom45.

Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ, Bae Wicked, slides to PVTSTCK to talk about being successful in a male dominated industry, finding herself as a person/mother after a nine-year relationship, prioritizing mental health, and the aftermath of her life-altering car accident. Big Sean said in the song, "Single Again," "I'm single again, blaming you is just so easy / But maybe the problem's me / I'm single again / Guess that's just the way it's gon' be / Maybe I should spend this time on me." Bae Wicked has gone on a journey of self-discovery after her car accident that left her with limited mobility. The situation left her with an abundance of anger being directed towards the wrong people, and a feeling of being "forgotten." This forced her to look inward & discover who she really is. Doing so, she realized that she needed to value herself & her time more, rather than being angry. Bae decided to take this as an opportunity to outgrow certain traits & situations she didn't like anymore. Thus, outgrowing the old her... Also discussed, running away from problems, being a role model for her daughter, creating the persona of Bae Wicked
An all-vinyl mix from Chicago DJ and producer Ilana Ariella served up for this week's Monday morning RISE mix.
Chicago singer Marcus Atom released his latest EP ‘SUMMER.TIME.CHI' to show his love for the city. Following the addition of his track “TURN” to Vocalo's on-air rotation for August, the artist returned to the Vocalo studios to sit down with afternoons host Nudia Hernandez and break down the EP and single for listeners. They also discussed taking time to give back to yourself as well as others, and an upcoming album in collaboration with Chicago DJ and producer Timmy V. This segment originally aired live on Thursday, August 24 during Nudia In The Afternoons on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM. It was edited and produced by Nudia Hernandez. To keep up with Marcus Atom, follow him on Instagram @marcusatom.
Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ, Gato The DJ, visits the studio to discuss his early success as a DJ, DJing for artists such as Miky Woodz & El Alfa; however, this early success leads to self-doubt when hard times come along. There have been many ups & downs in the industry for Gato (COVID being a huge one). Being a part of night life brings a high in of itself; however, when everything is done at the end of the night it's yourself you have to face the next day. Gato discusses the impact nightlife has had on not only his mental health, but his relationships with family & friends. Trying to establish a secure foundation while weeding out those who only use you for their benefit. Bruno Mars says in Grenade, " I would go through all this pain / Take a bullet straight through my brain / Yes, I would die for ya, baby / But you won't do the same." A common occurence that makes you question, "who's really got me?" Also discussed, impact of substances on mental health, finding purpose in life, groqing relationships with creatives, misperception from family.
Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ, Dj Enigma, slides to the studio & discusses the moments that have helped make him a staple in Chicago. From being Sicko Mobb's official DJ to opening for artists like Future, Enigma has established his name in not only Chicago, but across the US by creating his own lane & not being scared to take risks. In the song "Monster," Justin Bieber sings, "But what if I, what if I trip?/ What if I, what if I fall? / Then am I the monster?" This is something that Enigma & I found common ground on. Often, we would be mislabled due to the way we carry ourselves. Enigma talks about feeling a sense of being misunderstood; whether this came from strangers, friends or family. Since then, Enigma has aligned himself with the view of a villain; not because of a harmful nature, but because he does as he pleases & doesn't worry about what others may say. Also discussed, regrets in life, perks of touring, best DJs in Chicago, guiding the next generation
Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ, Yaya The Base, slides through the studio after opening her first residency (Club Yaya). Yaya & I discuss her inspiration to pursue neuroscience and Doing; as well as, the traumas that have impacted her everyday since she was a child. From loss of loved ones to toxic patterns within relationships. Ed Sheeran says in the song Runaway, "I've never seen my dad cry / Cold as stone in the kitchen light / I'll tell you it's about time / But I was raised to keep quiet / This is what I'm gonna do / Gonna run away, gonna make that move" Something that many individuals growing up in a Latin household can relate to. Due to this, Yaya has used music as her form of self-expression & a way to heal from her past wounds. Unfortunately, there's some scars that we'll never heal from... Also discussed, breaking toxic patterns, learning about relationships from parents, importance of therapy, being mindful of others mental health journey.

Shomari “Sho” Daniels is a Chicago DJ and entertainer — perhaps better known by their DJ persona, Zeetus Lapetus. Though they lived just outside of Chicago in Richmond Park for most of their life, they have been a part of the Chicago House music scene since they were young and moved into the city proper in 2019. During the pandemic, noticing a sense of loneliness, they decided to become a DJ. Their first gig was a virtual show for Dreamhouse Chicago, bringing listeners what they describe as a “space disco.” This is what their Chicago sounds like. This segment of “This Is What Chicago Sounds Like” was produced by Ari Mejia. To keep up with Daniels' upcoming DJ sets as Zeetus Lapetus, visit their Instagram @ZeetusLapetus.
Sad Boys For Real! For our 100th episode we have Chicago DJ, Simmy, slide through the studio to discuss her journey as a creative. More importantly, we discuss the lessons she's learned through being a DJ, producer, entrepreneur, and more importantly a human. As creatives, we're doubted & viewed as selfish due to the unique lifestyle we choose to live. Our job is more often viewed as a hobby rather than work, even when the success is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, the higher we get, it feels like the people around us seem to care less & less as time goes on. The lifestyle becomes lonely, and we forget to cherish those we love most.Ed sheeran sings in Nina, "And time's the only reason that we could break up/ 'Cause you would always tell me I'm away too much / Distance is relative to the time that it takes / To get on a plane or make a mistake, so say it again." There are sacrifices required to reach the heights we dream of, and time for others is scarce let alone ourselves. That's when we sit back & realize, "I'm only human..."Also discussed, performing at summer smash & Sway in The Morning, battle with depression, music influences

This song represents the importance of maintaining our word, especially to those we love; because without it we may cause irreversible damage. Also discussed, the importance of Crow Force, having Bad Bunny on SnapChat, and balancing marriage while being an important figure in nightlife.
Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ & LOS DSVLDS member, Syko, comes by the studio to discuss healing from the loss of a loved one, overcoming addictions & the significance music has played in his life.Justin Bieber said in his song Ghost, “I miss your touch on nights when I'm hollow / I know you crossed a bridge that I can't follow / Since the love that you left is all that I get / I want you to know / That if I can't be close to you / I'll settle for the ghost of you / I miss you more than life.” Losing someone leaves a hole that can never be filled & the mourning process is different for everyone. For Syko, he threw himself into his work & allowed his addiction to fuel his “happiness.” However, with his family's well-being weighing on him, Syko knew he needed to shift his priorities. Also discussed, impact LOS DSVLDS had on him, winning $100,000 & people's inconsistency in life

Sad Boys For Real! Chicago DJ, Kique slides through to the studio & discusses not being ready to grow up, be in love, or being the person that he needs to be. Sometimes in life we all feel this pressure to grow up, and be this person that we're not ready to be. No matter how successful they may be, you have the opportunity to repay them in many ways.Preme has opened for Pusha T, Lil Keed, Lil Tecca, and even DJ'd at Lyrical Lemonade's Summer Smash! After meeting all these amazing artists the contemplation of why we meet people has weighed heavy on him! Find out his answers on Sad Boy Radio.

Ralphi Rosario is an American house musician an founding member of the influential Chicago DJ group Hot Mix 5. The group was formed in 1981 while Ralphi was still in high school at the time the group became one of the major early forces of the burgeoning House Music scene in Chicago. By 1987, he collaborated with Xaviera Gold for "You Used To Hold Me," which has gone on to be one of the most influential early House Music tracks of all-time for what later was a revolution on the dancefloor. While Ralphi continued to put out early House Music releases throughout the nineties — his style rapidly changed when he teamed with Miami's DJ Abel (Aguilera) to form Rosabel a hybrid version of his last name and Abel's first name for a new more tribal house sound that he continued to perfect through today. Later the duo would introduce more Latin influences in their work while producing muscular House Music tracks for major artists that showcased their heritage and alternate musical influences. As a duo they have racked up five #1 Billboard Dance Club hits and Rosario has racked up fourteen Top Ten Dance Club Hits and two #1 hits. This does not include the hundreds of #1 hits for remixes of other artists including, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, Cher, Crystal Waters, Cyndi Lauper, Donna Summer, Erika Jayne, Gloria Estefan, Kelly Clarkson, Kelly Rowland, Kristine W, Kylie, Mariah Carey, ONO, Rihanna, Jennifer Holliday, Pussycat Dolls, Selena Gomez, Stevie Nicks, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and countless others. The list is exhausting but 90% or more are all included in the Party Favorz Diva Hall of Fame. With over 60 hours of tracks (which doesn't even come close to his breathtaking catalog) to choose from — I had numerous ways to approach these two sets honoring the master. I finally settled on hitting on the gayest tracks with the biggest divas and spread it out between the nineties and millennium with some rare tracks and some underground sounds that were predominantly only heard in queer clubs. Once I put out the volume 2 — all told there will be approximately 8+ hours of classics for your enjoyment. These sets are note intended to showcase his entire career but they are a good start. Music often plays a great role in getting us through difficult times by lifting our spirits and providing a much needed break from life that calms the soul, relieves stress, and allows us to return with a new focus. I'm dedicating this journey through Uplifting-Afro-Latin-Soul to the life and memory of Matt Cannon (DJ Kwest_on) who was part of my Chicago DJ community, my Mi Casa Holiday family, and a true lover of soulful music.

Hamilton Bohannon - Bohannon's Beat Edit Part III By Petko Turner Edit Here >> https://hypeddit.com/track/sc/myriqj Hamilton Frederick Bohannon (born March 7, 1942), often credited and known professionally simply as Bohannon, is an American percussionist, band leader, songwriter and record producer, who was one of the leading figures in 1970s disco music. He was born in Newnan, Georgia, and learned the drums at school. He began playing in local bands, one of which featured guitarist Jimi Hendrix, before graduating from Clark College, Atlanta with a degree in music and secondary education.[2][3] After a brief period as a schoolteacher, he was recruited in 1964 as drummer in 13-year-old Stevie Wonder's touring band. He moved to Detroit in 1967, where he was employed by Motown as the leader and arranger of Bohannon & The Motown Sound, who provided backing for many of the label's top acts on tour, including Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops and others. Much of his music has been widely sampled, most notably on Chicago DJ/producer Paul Johnson's 1999 hit "Get Get Down" which heavily sampled Bohannon's "Me and the Gang." Other musicians who have used samples of his music include Jay Z, Digable Planets, and Snoop Dogg. His name was also repeatedly invoked in the Tom Tom Club song "Genius of Love." His composition "Ooh!" was included on Mary J. Blige's album Love & Life in 2003. Download for free on The Artist Union

Honey Dijon Dishes On the Essence of DJing, Canada, and Being a Trans Person In a Gay World Next on the Rave Curious podcast, Josh and the New York-via-Chicago DJ dig deep. The Rave Curious Podcast continues to engage the world's best DJs in open and honest conversations about the life behind the beats. In Episode 003, host Joshua Glazer spend a beautiful summer afternoon in a Berlin park with New York via Chicago DJ Honey Dijon. Having witnessed house music in its infancy as an inappropriately young clubber in the Windy City, Honey connects with the crowd on a level few DJs can match. Those spiritual interactions have brought her to a global audience of underground faithful who fall for the fabulous DJ's as much as her record selection. No wonder the worlds of fashion and clubbing are both at her command. Josh and Honey dig deep into what it means to be a DJ, while also gabbing about the importance of shoe-spotting (it really does matter). They also discuss Honey's new path as a producer and why exactly Canada has a vibe all its own.
A true veteran of the House scene, it’s a real pleasure to have Johnny Fiasco join us on the Gangstercast. For more tun 20 years, Johnny’s music has stemmed from his grounded Chicago roots and continues to influence the deep house genre of dance music. From acid house down to organic soulful melodies, his style is always composed of musical peaks and valleys. Johnny has remixed some of the world biggest musical stars including Justin Timberlake, Bob Sinclair, DJ Sneak, Armando, Bassnectar, Kaskade, Paul Johnson, Samantha James and Soulstice just to name a few. Ask Johnny about his career and his passion for House is so strong he’ll tell you he’s just getting started. Johnny’s mix is a real journey through house music: ”This mix has all the peaks and valleys I always try and deliver. It's been a very productive year so far. I wanted to showcase new and old. From the deep n dirty vibes down to the core of acid house. The last track has always been a favorite of mine, a very jazzy downtempo cut I've played for almost 2 decades, still sounds fresh.” The Chicago DJ and producer also has his own unique take on the House Gangster ethos: “I believe the movement is all about keeping the fundamental rules in place but not limiting your experience. It's about knowing what is real… and what isn't. The House Gangster movement in my eyes represents the very core of House music. It's all about the incredible driving force that inspires, drives and excites that person who goes to a club and knows what they're looking for. We would always choose a hot sweaty basement with a room full of people connecting with the DJ over any flashy club with table service. No contest. Ever. The House Gangster sound? “Chicago and Detroit finally admitted to having a baby… and she can slap you around. Don't mess with her.”
On 12 July 1979 a disgruntled Chicago DJ, Steve Dahl, held an event in a baseball stadium to show how much he hated disco. But things got out of hand. The riot that followed made headlines all over the USA. (Image: People dancing to disco. Credit: Getty Images)
So I originally wanted to put this mix out for father's day, but it was well thought out for a special person in my life....my father, whose birthday is July 3. I finally got to work and put an ending to it, and here it is. It has a ton of new cuts and old. I hope you enjoy the sounds of Dj ERN. You can look me up on i-tunes store..Dj ern chicago's soul... and download all my mixes if you haven't done so. There is a huge music show this weekend here in the chi and it will be the mecca for EDM music this weekend. Hope you can come out and enjoy the great vibes and the great Chicago Dj's. Wavefront is NEXT!
[I]t's two for Tuesday on this episode of M&W. This month, we've got DJs E-man and Doc Link with an energetic two-hour back-to-back mix from their Liberate Sessions show on Cyberjamz. I first met Eric "E-man" Clark on his first trip to Manila in 2004, when he came with Jojo Flores and was hosted by Groove Nation's Edge Pamute. The hot Jon Cutler track "It's Yours", featuring E-man's poetic lyrics that came out a few years earlier, was still burning up the dance-floors around the globe and getting featured on numerous mixes and compilations. It was right around then that I first heard his collaboration with Markus Enochson "Musical Prayer" on Francois K's CD Deep & Sexy Vol.1 (Wave). It was then that I also learned about E-man's Bang The Party, the hugely successful event series that lasted 6 years held in various venues around Manhattan and Brooklyn: a party having the historical significance of Body & Soul, 718 Sessions, Ain't Nothing But A House Party, and other such iconic New York City house music gatherings. There's even a BTP documentary that we wish we could get our hands on (see the trailer). I met E-man again in 2005 when he accepted the "Best DJ - International" Award for Jojo Flores at the Choice Awards 4.0 (Jojo was abroad performing at the time). Elian with E-man at the NYC Choice Awards in 2005 Since then, E-man has hooked up the Chicago DJ and producer Doc Link to launch the Liberate record label, a space for them "to create original music, unfettered by the confines of the traditional record industry protocol." The duo also tours the world and hosts a weekly internet radio show by the same name. We hope to have them visit Manila soon bringing with them their message of freedom. For more on E-man, Doc Link and the Liberate Sessions, click here. And now in the words of E-man, here's 2-hours of "the hottness". Subscribe for free with iTunes
E|R podcast nr. 13 mixed by Chez Damier Chez Damier A legendary figure in electronic music, Chez Damier has played close witness to many of the pivotal moments in the history of house and techno. Jointly responsible with partner Ron Trent for both Prescription Records - widely recognised as one of the greatest labels of all time - and The Morning Factory - one of the most ethereal jams ever to rock a room - Chez Damier carries abound the soul of house music. KMS, The Music Institute, The Bellville three: the Chicago DJ has played pivotal roles in the development of all three hallowed pieces of musical history. However his natural artistry and constant need to outdo even himself has led to him passing off such seminal tunes as Can You Feel It as just a stage in his artistic development. For as an artist Chez Damier represents a unique blend; he is as impetuous and daring as now as in 1989 and being able to qualify this with his own unique heritage makes his releases and DJ performances doubly formidable. When The Music Institute opened in Detroit in the late '80s it provided the home for a developing music scene. It proved just as important for the development of techno in the city as The Warehouse and The Music Box had been for house music in Chicago and the hedonistic experiences in that club have gone onto shape much of Damier's life ever since. After a few years managing the KMS studio and label for Kevin Saunderson, he returned to his hometown of Chicago and, alongside Ron Trent, created the musical legacy that has guaranteed his legend. Immortal cuts like "Sometimes I Feel Like," "The Choice" and "Be My"- remain unparalleled examples of the genre. After taking an extended break from the music industry either side of the turn of the millennium, the house music impulse returned to Damier. A handful of releases in 2004 and the odd DJ date hinted that a return was on the cards. In 2009, the last year of the decade Damier found a trusted outlet for his talents. A series of releases for the German label Mojuba signalled that he was on his way back to show the young pretenders the way. Taking up the torch of Prescription, Damier launched Balance Alliance as a home for some of the most forward thinking and talented producers he deems fit to join him on the imprint. With momentum building behind him, Chez Damier will be exploring fresh artistic avenues in the new decade and looking to consolidate his legendary status as a DJ.
We`re highlighting DJ`s like Vince Adams, J-Illa and more....
