Techrete, Ireland's largest architectural precast concrete facade specialist, has launched an innovative range of sustainable concrete products, targeting a 50% reduction in embodied carbon. This pioneering product line positions Techrete at the forefront of innovation in green construction materials as the company approaches its 40th anniversary. A significant player in the UK, Techrete exports approximately 80% of its products to the UK. Serving construction industry giants such as Kier, Mace, McAleer & Rushe, Multiplex, RG Group, Sir Robert McAlpine, Sisk, Vinci, and Wates, the company has become known for its high-performance, sustainable solutions. The development of this new lower-carbon concrete range was the result of a strategic R&D programme, funded by Enterprise Ireland. Techrete's research explored the potential of alternative cement blends and novel materials to dramatically cut carbon emissions. As part of this innovation push, Techrete embraced the opportunities provided by a revised UK concrete standard (BS 8500 1&2 2023), allowing for the incorporation of lower-carbon materials such as limestone filler, fly ash, silica fume, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and others. Techrete currently employs 350 people across Ireland and the UK, with 174 employed at its base in Balbriggan, Co Dublin. State-of-the-Art Batching Plant Investment to Drive Scale To bring this innovative product to market and meet growing industry demand, Techrete recognized the need to upgrade its facilities. With support from Enterprise Ireland, the company has invested in a cutting-edge batching plant capable of producing high-performance concrete blends with strengths of up to 100N/mm. This investment ensures Techrete's ability to scale production of the new mixes, securing its position as a competitive exporter of sustainable building materials. Marcus Sweeney, Non-Executive Chair of Techrete, commented: "Sustainability is no longer an afterthought in construction; it's a driving force behind procurement decisions. Every project now factors in the carbon load of materials, and our new concrete range addresses this demand. Our focus is twofold: reduce the amount of concrete used through the enhanced performance of high-strength mixes, and integrate substantial amounts of cement replacement materials to lower the carbon footprint. Thanks to the support from Enterprise Ireland, we've made significant strides in both areas. We are on track to achieving a 50% reduction in embodied carbon by 2025, setting the stage for our ultimate goal of net-zero by 2030." Tom Kelly, Divisional Manager for Industrial & Life Sciences at Enterprise Ireland said: "Enterprise Ireland is proud to support Techrete in its innovative approach to reducing the carbon footprint of construction materials, from R&D support to the capital support to allow real world deployment. The development of lower carbon concrete products is critical as the industry strives to meet the growing demand for sustainable solutions. Techrete's commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility reflects the kind of forward-thinking leadership that will keep Ireland at the forefront of global green construction. We are delighted to have played a part in helping the company bring these groundbreaking products to market." Techrete's Path to Net-Zero by 2030 Beyond product innovation, Techrete has implemented a robust sustainability strategy to reduce operational emissions. Long-standing initiatives such as rainwater harvesting, effluent neutralization, and energy generation through solar and thermal systems, as well as planting thousands of trees, contribute to their ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. As Techrete continues to lead the charge toward greener construction, their partnership with Enterprise Ireland serves as a blueprint for industry-wide transformation.

Living in a more deprived, more ethnically diverse location increases your chance of receiving a higher quote, a new survey on the Irish insurance industry has found. A new report jointly produced by CeADAR, Ireland's Centre for AI, and Idiro Analytics used AI methods to analyse almost 40,000 quotes from 10 car insurance companies across 20 locations in Ireland. Researchers found that driving experience and the length of time a driver has had a policy are key factors that are modified by home address when a quote is being calculated. This can lead to extreme cases in which 25-year-olds in areas of south Dublin are receiving lower quotes than 60-year-olds with fewer penalty points living in poorer locations. The report also found that the extent to which your premium increases if you receive penalty points varies depending on your location. For example, drivers in Dublin 17 who receive penalty points can expect an average increase in their premium of 107%, from €792 to €1,642, compared to 68% for drivers in Mallow Co. Cork, from €560 to €941. Meanwhile, a driver's occupation increases their quote even if they don't use their car for business purposes. This is then compounded by where they live. Retail workers are most affected by this, with drivers who work in retail and live in Balbriggan, Co. Dublin, seeing their premiums increase by 35%, from €555 to €747, compared to 5%, from €512 to €540, for a retail worker living in Glenageary, Co. Dublin. The year-long research analysed almost 40,000 quotes from 20 locations around Ireland, including counties Dublin, Cork, Longford, Roscommon, Wicklow and Donegal. Multiple samples of quotes were collected to isolate single changes to accurately measure the effect of each change - for example, a driver's name, home address or gender - on the quoted figure. The research did find significant differences across the 10 insurers whose quotes were analysed. The full findings of the report can be analysed here. Other key findings in the report include: Residents of Longford Town are quoted the highest premiums in the study while residents of Crookstown, Co. Cork, receive the lowest quotes There was no difference in quote between those with traditionally Irish names and those with non-Irish-sounding names. - There was also no significant difference between males and females Drivers who make claims even when they are not at fault receive higher quotes The aim of the study is to understand how insurance companies' algorithms work and the extent to which unconscious bias is embedded in them. The companies could have legitimate reasons for quoting higher prices for some areas - higher rates of car-related crime, for example - but bias or unconscious bias could arise if those areas are also more ethnically diverse and economically deprived. European legislation due to be introduced later this year will see essential service providers like car insurance companies penalised for failing to guard against bias in their AI systems. Companies found to have broken the rules of the EU AI Act will find themselves liable for administrative fines of up to €30m or a sum equal to 6% of their annual turnover. Dr Adrian Byrne, a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Career-FIT PLUS Fellow at CeADAR and Lead Researcher AI Ethics Centre, Idiro Analytics, says: "It appears to be a virtuous circle versus a vicious circle in terms of where you live, i.e. living in a more deprived, more ethnically diverse location not only increases the chances of receiving a higher quote but if you add penalty points, claims and zero NCB into the mix then we have seen unequal treatment between different locations. In extreme comparisons, we've seen 25-year-olds in the most well-heeled locations be predicted to receive a lower quote than 60-year-olds living in the poorest locations despite having much more driving experience and policies in their own name. "If car insurance companies a...

SIRO, the ESB and Vodafone joint venture company currently rolling out a €1 billion Gigabit broadband network across Ireland, has announced that its services are now available to 50,000 homes and businesses in Dublin City, and to 100,000 premises overall across the wider Dublin area. The €100 million rollout is part of a strategy to make services powered by SIRO available to areas underserved by fibre to the home broadband. The expansion in the capital follows close collaboration with Dublin City Council's Telecoms Unit and with the broadband officers in the other three Dublin local authorities to advance its Dublin network roll-out. Within Dublin City Council's borders this includes 'new' SIRO areas such as Dublin's Docklands, East Wall, Walkinstown, Kimmage and Crumlin. SIRO's network is already well established in other parts of the city such as Fairview, Raheny, Finglas, Artane or Coolock. This is in addition to SIRO's expanded network footprint across the four Dublin local authority areas, which now encompasses more than 30 suburban towns from Balbriggan in Fingal as far south as Shankill in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown. SIRO plans to continue to build across Dublin city and county where other commercial opportunities exist. Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí de Róiste noted: "This is a really positive investment for Dublin, and I am delighted that the City Council have been able to support SIRO in the delivery of this essential digital infrastructure particularly in areas such as East Wall, Docklands. Kimmage and Crumlin. We need to ensure that all of our communities have access to high quality broadband services and are not left behind as the adoption of new technologies and digital services continue to accelerate." SIRO John Keaney Chief Executive Officer, noted: "The presumption that our cities already enjoy universal full fibre connectivity can be inaccurate. Poor broadband can exist in areas of our cities and its suburbs, just as much as it can be found in more remote areas. "Yet, future-proofed and reliable fibre connectivity is key to the economic life of our capital city and in all the communities which make up its constituent parts. "SIRO is rolling out our network across Dublin, city and county, because a real need exists to address existing connectivity blackspots. By now reaching areas underserved by fibre to the home broadband, such as the Docklands, East Wall or Crumlin and Walkinstown, we are striving to ensure these areas have the broadband infrastructure essential for the future wider social and economic development of the city," added Mr. Keaney. Smart City Program Manager at Dublin City Council, Jamie Cudden stated: "Investments like this from SIRO support our ambition to future-proof Dublin ensuring that we can take advantage of new and emerging technology trends. When we established our Telecoms Unit in 2022, we committed to work with the telecoms sector to help streamline and accelerate network rollout through better co-ordination and collaboration. The real winners here are communities across Dublin who will have access to world class digital infrastructure and choice of providers." SIRO is a joint venture between ESB and Vodafone, formed in 2015, to roll out a new full fibre broadband network across Ireland. To date, SIRO has rolled out network to every county in Ireland with its broadband network in over 135 towns and cities and available to almost 550,000 homes and businesses nationwide. The company is on track to reach 700,000 premises by 2026. More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too.
