We talk about how he came to live in Sweden, what happened when he first saw live stand-up comedy in the Liffey, and how a lot of what he has done since has been to impress the ten-year-old lad growing up in Thurles in a very different Ireland to the one we know today.

John, sailing enthusiast and Commodore of the Irish Cruising Association told Brendan all about the annual Three Bridges Rally. It's when three of the bridges on the Liffey will open and lift - allowing a parade of some 45 boats to sail up-river from Poolbeg up to the Matt Talbot bridge. It's on at 3pm on the 7th of September.

This week we're in Sheriff Street in Dublin's capital for Part 1 of an interview with local hero Pierce O'Leary. We take a walk around with unbeaten world title hopeful Big Bang while he spends some time at home between fight dates. Pierce talks about his love for the community, the pride he feels for the area and the drive it gives him to dig deep in his toughest battles. Once the bustling heartland of Dublin's Docklands, industrialisation took its toll and the area became run-down and crime-ridden. To outsiders, the name Sheriff Street became synonymous with lawlessness and criminality - but the community has always stuck together and produced people who've made a significant contribution to Ireland, from Sean O'Casey to Luke Kelly to Jim Sheridan, along with boxing idols like previous podcast guest Gus Farrell and now O'Leary. As we walk around, it's hard to ignore the rapid pace of development in the Docklands. It's changed even since Pierce was a kid and it's not been without controversy. Locals have voiced concern about the loss of community identity, lack of affordable housing, threat of gentrification and the prioritisation of commercial interests over community needs. They fight for the area and they also support their fighters, as witnessed by the celebrations up the road on Killarney Street when another north inner city boxer, Kellie Harrington, brought home her second Olympic gold medal from Paris. We finish up at the statue of Luke Kelly which sits beside the Royal Canal before it enters the Liffey and Pierce allows himself to dream of a statue of himself there beside the Dubliner. A statue, affectionately known as the 'Hags with the Bags', has returned to Dublin City Centre. It's the statue of the two women sitting and chatting beside the Ha'penny Bridge, which was temporarily removed while Lower Liffey Street got a makeover. Ray speak to the statue's sculptor Jackie McKenna.

More than just one of Ireland's most beloved musicians, Martin Hayes is also the author of Shared Notes: A Musical Journey. In his memoir he introduces us to a host of brilliant characters, ranging from childhood friends and relations in East Clare to those who would become central to The Gloaming. One figure we meet is Tommie Potts, a Dublin firefighter from the Coombe and a fiddle player. The Liffey Banks remains a beloved record. In this excerpt from a conversation at London's Féile MOTH, Hayes discusses Potts and revisits a tune that means much to him.

This Saturday, Claregalway Basketball Club will look to reverse the result of last year's Intermediate Final when they face Liffey Celtics in the newly named Development League Final at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin. Last year, in the final played at the National Basketball Arena it was the Celtics who prevailed 65-52 and many of that Claregalway team will be in action determined to take the league back to Galway. Their Head Coach is Paul Flanagan and he spoke to John Mulligan.

Focusing on the years immediately preceding the American Civil War, Patrick O'Malley interrogates the bardic verse epic, the gothic tale, the realist novel, the stage melodrama, and the political polemic to ask how many mid-nineteenth-century Irish nationalist writers with liberationist politics declined to oppose race-based chattel enslavement in the United States and the structures of white supremacy that underpinned and ultimately outlived it. Many of the writers whose work O'Malley examines drew specifically upon the image of Black suffering to generate support for their arguments for Irish political enfranchisement; yet in doing so, they frequently misrepresented the fundamental differences between Irish and Black experience under the regimes of white supremacy, which has had profound consequences. Patrick R. O'Malley is Professor of English at Georgetown University, where he teaches Irish and British literature of the long nineteenth century and critical theory. He is the author of two previous books: Catholicism, Sexual Deviance, and Victorian Gothic Culture, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2006, and Liffey and Lethe: Paramnesiac History in Nineteenth-Century Anglo-Ireland, which was published by Oxford University Press in 2017 and won the Robert Rhodes Prize for books on literature from the American Conference for Irish Studies.
