As the world becomes more and more immersed in the FIFA 2026 World Cup, the Blind Guys assess FIFA's audio description service for the games. Is it better than standard commentary or is it an own goal for FIFA? Jan and Mo have been on a second date, and as usual they had chaperones; this time in the guise of former 'Big Cheese' at Vispero, Eric Damery and his lovely wife Pauline. The guys accepted no guilt for ordering 2 lobster salads and then running for the hills before the bill arrived! Clodagh's got email questions about digital menus and QR codes, and a question about accessible gaming. If you've got big feelings (or small feelings) about accessible gaming, please get in touch – you might be included in a future episode about this topic! Email blindguyschat@gmail.com and tell us all. Finally, if you would like to hear and contribute to the next Audio Description Association VI User Group meeting, here are the details: The next ADA VI user group will see Óran O'Neill speaking with James Flanagan from FSE. Football Supporters Europe's Disability & Inclusion Fan Network is helping to ensure that supporters with disabilities have a stronger voice in shaping the future of football. James will talk to us about the vital role of Audio Descriptive Commentary in making football more accessible for blind and partially sighted fans, both in stadiums and on television. Drawing on his experience in disability inclusion and supporter advocacy, James tells us how accessible commentary can enhance the matchday experience and help ensure that football is truly a game for everyone. Hello & Welcome To Today's Episode! Today's guest has a unique perspective as she's both a high performance athlete AND a pelvic physio who is passionate about keeping girls and women involved in sport.Clodagh McIntyre is a rising star in physiotherapy who is both an inter-county camogie player for Tipperary and a pelvic health physiotherapist. Clodagh discussed her journey from UCD graduate to working in private practice, her experiences with stress incontinence as an athlete, and the lack of pelvic health education in physio training programs. We explored how pelvic health issues affect female athletes, with statistics showing 7 out of 10 athletes leaving sport due to bladder leakage, and discussed the taboo nature of discussing these topics within sporting teams. We discussed the importance of education and support around pelvic health issues for female athletes, highlighting the lack of standardization in GAA and potentially LGFA, as well as emphasising the need to normalize conversations about these issues and prevent them from deterring athletes from participating in sports.Clodagh shared her upcoming trip to Kenya with Warriors for Humanity and Self-Help Africa, where she plans to plant trees and help communities, for which she is fundraising. Please see linked below to her fundraiser! https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/clodaghmcintyre Our shared passion is definitely showcasing the conversation and embedding pelvic health into female athlete wellbeing : there's SUCH a need for better education about pelvic health at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as within sporting organizations, to support female athletes and prevent them from dropping out of sport due to pelvic health issues.Want to learn more about supporting the Female Athlete, and promoting pelvic and menstrual health? The Menstrual Detective online course comes with FREE access to the course 'Pelvic Health for the Young Female Athlete, where we look at all the potential drivers for pelvic health dysfunction, beyond isolated strengthening for the pelvic floor muscles. In what can only be described as a robust conversation, this week's show has it all! The Blind Guys begin by talking about the weather and then we move smoothly into Jan telling us about this year's Sight Village, from which he has just returned. The conversation then meanders along the road as the guys talk about the new Focus 46 and also the introduction of JAWS Kiosk as it rolls into Europe; it seems that there are some bumps along the way for this new accessibility feature at airports and other locations. The show tour bus then appears to take a sharp right and heads straight for a wall so thick, not even the US military could break through it. However, the Blind Guys, 2 in particular, manage to drive headfirst through this wall as if it is a knife cutting through butter! On the calmer side of the street, Clodagh has an email from Bence, who has a question about accessible coffee makers and Microwaves etcetera. So, we suggest you buckle up multiple times, if you can, and settle in for what we describe as the Grand Theft Auto of a nice sedate Sunday drive in the countryside: Blind Guys Chat - 8 out of 10 spineless, weak-minded wet towels prefer it to a men's smelly locker room! They also talk about the shifting realities of retirement: “It's never been harder to get older and retire,” says Andrew.Elizabeth and Andrew also talk about:How good financial planning can bring a client's financial future to life, showing them the ‘why' of advice. The need for early financial education for children – and girls in particular – and the positive impact that can have on financial priorities and how we manage our money as adults. The power of telling clients you need to refer. “The best person isn't always me,” says Elizabeth.Elizabeth and Andrew prove that good advice is about understanding both people and money.Listen nowL&G Apply - Adviser Registration Ignite - Ignite | Mortgage Technology | Legal & General
In this podcast, you, the listeners, send in the questions for us to discuss. We don't see them before we press record, and we don't prepare. We encounter them cold, much like most of the big issues in life which arrive without warning. There are plenty of experts out there. What interests us is the freedom to explore our first thoughts openly and honestly in the moment. The questions are only read once that big red recording button has been pressed, so what follows is shaped by our lived experiences and more than five years of making this podcast together. What comes out of our mouths is simply our instinctive reaction to what we are hearing and thinking in real time.As a side note, we don't really think of ourselves as podcasters. We just make podcasts, which is a subtle, but important difference. The first listener question for today comes all the way from Stithians, Cornwall, England where Paul asks the following - "I've heard you guys saying meditation is something you find useful. A friend of mine says they struggle to stay awake so they can't do it. I often think we don't take sleep seriously, and don't take what I call ‘sleep treatment' regularly. Or develop healthy sleep patterns and mindsets. If we did, meditation might be more beneficial? I feel I have a healthy sleep mindset. For example if I wake at 3am, I smile and think I've still got hours left in bed. Whereas someone with an unhealthy mindset toward sleep might panic that they've woken and need to get back to sleep, which keeps them awake”.Stuart argues that much of life comes down to mindset, while William applies this idea to meditation, describing open eye meditation as a practical form of mindfulness that can be practised at any time. Rather than trying to switch off the mind completely, he suggests the goal is to let thoughts pass through without becoming emotionally engaged or pulled into them.Stuart and William discuss how sleep is often undervalued, particularly the importance of developing healthier attitudes towards waking in the night rather than treating it as a crisis. The second listener question arrives from Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland where Clodagh sets the following - “We in the UK think we're a group of islands, divided from our neighbours by water. It's just a short jump in mindset to begin to see we're all linked by water too”William reflects on how Britain's geography has shaped a distinct national mindset, arguing that the country's island status has fostered a particular way of thinking that feels different from both mainland Europe and, in his experience, many Irish perspectives. Stuart feels that effective environmental action depends heavily on mindset, encouraging people to reflect on where their thinking is fixed when facing challenges or debates about sustainability, especially when there is resistance to being more sustainable. Group tours are one of the most popular ways to experience Ireland – especially for travelers who want to see a lot without worrying about driving, directions, or logistics. Nearly half of overseas visitors explore Ireland this way, which means coaches crisscross the island daily, bringing travelers to castles, coastlines, and charming towns. But what is it actually like to travel around Ireland on a coach tour? And how do you make sure the tour you choose matches the experience you want? This National Secondary road to the Cliffs of Moher is just wide enough for tour buses to squeeze past each other. This article is based on podcast episode 329 featuring Clodagh FitzGerald, a professional tour guide in Ireland.Use the player below to listen or scroll to continue reading the article and get resource links. [powerpoint] Group Tours in Ireland: How Coach Travel Works Professional tour guide Clodagh Fitzgerald spends her days leading travelers around Ireland, and she describes the role as wearing many hats. A guide becomes the storyteller, problem solver, travel advisor, and sometimes even the group timekeeper. Each tour follows a planned itinerary, and the guide's job is to help travelers understand what they're seeing along the way – sharing history, culture, geography, and the little details that make Ireland special. For travelers, the biggest benefit is simple: someone else handles the logistics. Typical coach tours include: Transportation across Ireland A knowledgeable guide providing commentary Pre-booked accommodations Select included attractions Some scheduled meals Planned sightseeing stops Instead of worrying about navigation or parking, travelers can simply enjoy the journey. How to Choose the Right Group Tour in Ireland Not all tours are created equal. Before booking, it's important to carefully review the itinerary and details. A few things experienced guides recommend travelers check: Length of the Tour Consider how much time you actually want to spend in Ireland. If you're traveling from North America, it's wise to arrive at least one day before the tour begins to recover from jet lag and adjust to the time difference. Starting a tour the same day you land can mean spending the first day tired, disoriented, and missing out on the experience. What Is Included (and What Isn't) Tour itineraries often use wording like “see” or “visit.” Those two words can mean very different things. See often means you'll drive past the attraction. Visit usually means the group will stop and go inside. Reading the itinerary carefully helps avoid disappointment later. Hotel Locations Some tours stay in city centers, while others stay outside town. Neither is wrong, but the location affects your free time. If you want to explore pubs, shops, or restaurants in the evening, staying in or near the town center makes that much easier. Built-In Free Time Even on a group tour, it's nice to explore on your own. Many itineraries include: Free evenings Independent sightseeing time Opportunities to shop or explore small towns This balance lets travelers enjoy the structure of a tour while still having personal travel moments. What to Pack for a Coach Tour in Ireland Travelers forget things on every tour, but a few items come up again and again. Some essentials to pack include: A washcloth – not all Irish hotels provide them Prescription medications (always in carry-on luggage) Familiar over-the-counter medicine you normally use Earplugs or headphones for comfort on the coach Weather layers and rain protection Ireland's weather can change quickly, even in summer. Packing for rain – no matter the forecast – is always a smart move. Understanding Group Travel Dynamics Coach tours bring together travelers from different places and backgrounds. That's part of the fun, but it also means being mindful of the group. A few simple habits make the experience smoother for everyone: Be on time when the group departs Keep phone calls and music quiet on the coach Pay attention when the guide explains timing and stops Respect shared travel spaces Tours run on schedules, and if one person is late, the entire group may be affected. But the flip side of traveling together is the camaraderie that often develops. By the end of a tour, many travelers have formed friendships, shared photos, and even planned future trips together. Three Places Travelers Wish They Had More Time When tours move quickly, certain destinations leave visitors wishing they could stay longer. These three locations consistently top the list. Kilkenny Often called Ireland's medieval capital, Kilkenny is packed with winding streets, historic buildings, and excellent local shops. Many tours stop for only a short visit to see Kilkenny Castle, but the town rewards travelers who slow down and explore. Things to see and do: Tour Kilkenny Castle Walk the Medieval Mile Visit St. Canice's Cathedral Browse artisan shops and cafés Dingle Located on the spectacular Dingle Peninsula, this colorful harbor town is full of personality. Many tours visit as a quick stop during a scenic drive, but travelers often wish they had more time to enjoy the town itself. Highlights include: Traditional music pubs Boat tours in Dingle Bay The Dingle Distillery Walking along the harbor It's a place where spending the evening, rather than just an hour, can completely change the experience. Kylemore Abbey Set against the dramatic landscape of Connemara, Kylemore Abbey is far more than just a quick photo stop. The estate includes: The Victorian walled gardens Woodland and lakeside walks The Gothic church The abbey itself While some tours allow only a short visit, travelers often say they could easily spend an entire day exploring the grounds. About Clodagh FitzGerald Clodagh is a professional tour guide who leads coach tours across Ireland throughout the travel season. Long before the prophecy was spoken, before Clodagh ever thought to seek him out, Aster heard the call. The Dryad teacher had spent centuries bound to the Grove; its guardian, its memory, its guide. But something stirred beyond its borders. A voice without form. A song without source. Ancient. Familiar. Impossible to ignore. This is the story of the day Aster chose to leave and his journey for answers... Help our tales travel further: leave a review, drop a comment, or share the episode link on your socials. On this show we are speaking to Mohammed's brother Ihab Laachir, who is here to spill the beans about his older brother, apparently known as 'The Hacker' in his family. Who knew?! Ihab is currently studying political science at Amsterdam University and has some great insights into living with a disability while attending university. Is Ihab a future prime minister of The Netherlands? Well, he has our vote for sure. We have emails from Chloe in the UK about funniest blind bloopers - Mohammed has a funny one about meeting himself in his apartment. Huh? Mei Ling from Singapore is asking about AD. Jacob in Norway wants a raise for the 'token sightie' (AKA Clodagh) for having to put up with the 3 boys. Clodagh thinks she should get danger money! So, stick the toast on, fling open the windows, and listen to the dawn chorus while tuning in to the best podcast this side of a mushroom omelette: Blind Guys Chat - 18 out of 20 university students prefer it to lectures! Clodagh and Trepp emerge from the portal into the Ashen Expanse; a barren wasteland that offers no trace of their missing teacher, Aster. As shifting paths pull strangers together, they cross fates with the enigmatic Dryad, Kidana, but introductions are cut short when a desperate cry pierces the darkness. The call leads them to Rova… and toward a new leg of their journey that may be far more dangerous than the wasteland itself..Help our tales travel further: leave a review, drop a comment, or share the episode link on your socials. Laois are back in intermediate camogie following their All-Ireland premier junior title win last year and have a Division 2A campaign ahead. But last year in Croke Park, Laois were back.
Off The Ball's Rachel Sheehan speaks to Galway's Niamh Mallon, Cork's Laura Hayes, Laois' Clodagh Tynan, Dublin's Aisling Maher and Armagh's Rachael Merry at the launch of the Centra Camogie Leagues 2026
A tragic incident occurred in Dublin City Centre yesterday afternoon when a Bus Éireann bus crashed on North Earl Street, resulting in the death of one man and injuries to three others. Since the incident, videos and images have been circulating on social media. An Garda Síochána has urged the public to refrain from sharing such footage, out of respect for the victims and their families. Is this something the gardai should have to ask, or is it common sense to avoid taking these videos and pictures?Andrea was joined by Entertainment and News Correspondent with the Irish Independent, Melanie Finn, Volunteer first responder, Michael, Mark McLaughin, Secretary, Buncrana Hearts, Newstalk's tech correspondent Jess Kelly and Clodagh in Dublin to discuss.
Clodagh and Trepp step through the portal in search of Aster... Meanwhile in the Ashen Expanse, two strangers move with different goals. Rova, an ambitious treasure hunter, digs through ruins and half-buried legends in pursuit of fortune. Kidana, a wanderer, searches for supplies and rumors that might point them toward something more. They don't know it yet, but the desert is already pulling their paths together, and before long their journeys will intersect with Clodagh's in unexpected ways.Help our tales travel further: leave a review, drop a comment, or share the episode link on your socials. As we celebrate 50 years of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind we speak to Tom O'Neill, guide dog owner and founder of the Balbriggan branch of Irish Guide Dogs. Tom tells us how he came to own his first guide dog and how having dogs has made his day-to-day living much more independent. It's not quite ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles', but Jan comes fairly close. Recently he spent a day, yes that's right! One day! ...in the "The City by the Bay". Why only a day? Well... let him explain; we think there could be a movie in this story! Clodagh is back with a shout-out for new listener, Adrijana, along with emails from Clare McLoughlin, and Blind Gordon, who has been doing some DIY, god help Mrs Blind Gordon, a.k.a. Alaine. So, fasten your seatbelts, stop hitting that cabin crew call button, recline back and listen to the greatest podcast this side of a snowstorm: Blind Guys Chat! 9 out of 10 de-icers prefer it to the cold! Thanks very much for joining us for this episode of the People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast. We answer listener questions that we've not seen before we press record, approaching each one cold. We're not experts, but we talk freely and honestly, as people often do when faced with important issues unexpectedly. The first listener question in this episode comes from Andrew in Bradford, England. He asks, “Are individualistic cultures intrinsically selfish?”Stuart questions whether focusing on your own health, benefit and wellbeing, is truly selfish, arguing that helping others first requires taking care of yourself.William suggests that the core of the question comes from Andrew's lived experiences, particularly from repeatedly observing people behaving in selfish or overly individualistic ways without considering how their actions affect others.Stuart suggests that people can be individuals without being selfish, and that perceptions of selfishness often depend on the perspective and expectations of other parties. The second question comes from Clodagh in Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She asks, “Did time, as we now perceive it, start at a specific moment?”Stuart reflects on cutting-edge scientific thinking about black holes and time, suggesting that time may be a human construct and might not have a clear beginning, middle, or end. He admits uncertainty about the nature of time, noting it remains a topic of active scientific debate.William argues that time is a construct of the brain, shaped by our internal experience rather than the external world, noting that subjective perception can make events feel much closer or further away than they actually are.Stuart's concluding action invites listeners to pause when feeling frustrated about sustainability and explore the underlying concepts and assumptions shaping their thinking.William's concluding action encourages taking time to do something without focusing on the clock and simply allowing the experience to unfold. What do you make of this discussion? You have found our first episode of 2026, well done! This is the podcast where there are no scripts, no prep, just two guys, Stuart ‘The Wildman' Mabbutt and William Mankelow, who are willing to approach the questions sent in by you the listener. They aren't afraid of talking about stuff cold that they've never necessarily explored before. The first listener question for this episode comes from Clodagh in Larne, County Antrim, Northern Ireland - “How does culture form?” Stuart asserts that if you leave something long enough, it will turn into something. That's a culture.Drawing on David Epstein's Range, William notes that NASA's rigid, procedure-bound culture before the Challenger accident, discouraged challenge and contributed to failure. The example shows that culture can be examined and, when it no longer serves its purpose, changed, or let go.The second of the two listener question for this episode comes from Zbigniew in Chorzów, Poland - ”If someone has recently relocated to a new country, should there be leniency for breaking minor laws they did not know about, or should they be prosecuted the same as their counterpart raised in that culture?”William argues that breaking a law should not depend on cultural background, since even lifelong residents often do not know every rule. He suggests that enforcement already allows for discretion, and that there is always room for leniency and judgment in how minor offences are handled.Stuart argues that while there is room for leniency, claims of ignorance must be balanced with judgment. He suggests that this balance often depends on a police officer's experience and discretion, as well as situational factors, including the officer's state of mind.William notes that during COVID, police often showed leniency toward people who shoplifted out of necessity, using discretion based on circumstances rather than background. He argues that the same approach can apply to people new to a country.Stuart concludes with an environmental action: that is to step back and examine the hidden motivations behind a system or process. He advises considering the broader, macro-level impacts and reflecting thoughtfully on what's really driving production or decisions. What do you make of this discussion? This week, Jan is floating on cloud 9 as his local football team (that's soccer for those of you in the USA) seems to be doing very well. So well, in fact, that they are top of the 'kitchen' league ...better not to ask what that means! Our good friend Stuart Lawler gives us his own thoughts on the NewHaptics 'Codex' Braille display, which uses compressed air to raise its braille cells. It does this by hooking itself up to an aquarium-like pump. However, we are not sure if fish need to be present while the display is in operation. Once we find Nemo, we will ask him/her! Mohammed has at last received his Ally Solos smart glasses. What does he think? Well, tune in to find out whether you should spend your hard-earned cash or not. In addition to being a world-renowned lawyer and mathematician, Mohammed is now passing himself off as an orientation & mobility trainer, and has some views on how one should use a long cane. Do you agree? Let us know at blindguyschat@gmail.com. Clodagh has an email about screen readers from a listener in Poland. What's your preference, JAWS, NVDA or Narrator? Let us know. So, forget about cleaning out the poo from the aquarium. Slap on a pot of coffee and tune into the most radical podcast this side of a moaning Liverpool football player: Blind Guys Chat. 11 out of 13 guppies prefer it to pushing braille cells. This week we are talking to Adela Buliman from Vially here in Ireland. Adela is the Chief Accessibility Officer and what she doesn't know about the European Accessibility Act, isn't worth knowing about! So, roll up your sleeves, Mohammed, and get ready to rumble! Disclaimer: this chat is more of a girlie pillow fight than a "pistols at dawn" kinda thing, but we enjoyed it! Jan was home alone at Sight Village, London recently, and he has all the juicy tech news to share, including a new Braille note-taker from HumanWare. The biggest news this episode is that the guys have been working hard on a new email jingle for Clodagh – what do you think? Is it down with the kids? Send us your reviews to BlindGuysChat@gmail.com. Clodagh has an email from Nina in Canada, who wants to know about independent travel. Mohammed can answer this one as he is an expert solo traveller. So, pull out that list of all your inaccessible gadgets and settle in for the number 1 podcast this side of a 365-day-old Christmas tree: Blind Guys Chat. 16 out of 20 European Commission lawyers prefer it to laying down the law! Ray Booth's career forms a perfect circle: At school, his first internship was with the legendary southern architect Bobby McAlpine. After moving to New York and working for John Saladino and Clodagh, Booth moved back and became a partner in McAlpine's firm, where he's stayed ever since. But Booth has also become a star in his own right—with a book, lines for Hickory Chair and Visual Comfort, and regular placement in top shelter magazines. On this episode of the podcast he speaks with host Dennis Scully about staying with McAlpine while building his own brand, how social media has made clients more difficult to work with, and how his new book, The Expressive Home, signals a new chapter in his career.
