When legendary Red Sox slugger Ted Williams gave his induction speech at the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 25, 1966, he unexpectedly included a blunt admonition to the sport's establishment that something in the hallowed Hall was significantly awry - the absence of standout players from the Negro Leagues: "I've been a very lucky guy to have worn a baseball uniform, and I hope some day the names of Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson in some way can be added as a symbol of the great Negro players who are not here - only because they weren't given a chance." The "Splendid Splinter" was referring to two of the most famous names in the Negro Leagues, who were not given the opportunity to play in the Major Leagues until Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947. (Gibson died early in 1947 and never played in the majors; Paige's brief major league stint came long past his prime.) Williams biographer Leigh Montville called the broadside "a first crack in the door that ultimately would open and include Paige [in 1971] and Gibson [1972] and other Negro League stars in the shrine." The Hall has been playing catch-up ever since - and as this week's guest Steven Greenes (Negro Leaguers and the Hall of Fame: The Case for Inducting 24 Overlooked Ballplayers) argues - still has plenty of ground to cover if it is to fully memorialize the contributions of some of the best talent to have ever played the game.

12-14-2019 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this version of the program by talking about how the New York Mets are in a business of saving money. They continue to put up the front that they have to reduce payroll if they are to make the necessary additions they need to make to compete with the best teams of the National League. Yet, they did not pay Yoenis Cespedes almost half of his contractual obligations for 2019. The Mets have used the Cespedes contact as an excuse of why they cannot afford other upgrades, yet they were not paying him in the first place. In spite of saving $20 million in having to pay Cespedes this coming season, they STILL claim they need to move a $10 million or so contact (Jed Lowrie or Jeurys Familia) if they are to have the financial ability to address the worst bullpen in Major League Baseball. The Mets answer to improving the worst bullpen in baseball is to send out the same exact relievers. What is the definition of insanity? John then talks about the Baseball Hall of Fame and how its voting process and choices of exclusion are different from Pro Football and Pro Basketball. Did OJ Simpson and Pete Rose dominate a sport enough to warrant inclusion in its respective Hall of Fame? Yes. Did anything they did (or did not do) after their playing career was over have anything to do with what they did when they played? No. Why is Pete Rose not in Baseball's Hall of Fame for what he did as a player? Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens (and anybody else suspected of using performance enhancing drugs) would get a more fair trial if they were being accused of a heinous crime. John gives a different take, though, when it comes to the career of Will Clark. While John does not back down from his support of the "steroids era" players getting enshrined in its Hall of Fame, he does feel for a player like Will Clark. Clark was as good as Rafael Palmeiro, but chose to not use PED's. Will Clark's accomplishments are not given the credit they deserve because of Palmeiro, because of Mark McGwire- two players that would be considered Clark contemporaries. Finally, in the Nobody's Listening segment of the show, John talks about the "R" word, and even though it should not be used, the context and intention should be considered before the PC police eats them alive. A statement of such should not be grounds for termination and definitely should not lead to somebody being given future employment

7-26-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up this version of the program by talking about the difference between entertainment and life. While entertainers should understand their opinions are relevant, they should take time to identify their audience. Athletes (and entertainers) have gained their audience through their talents. That is what their fans come to see and hear. Angel Hernandez is known as one of the worst umpires in baseball history. However, he did a good job of overseeing the Rays/ Red Sox confusion the other day. A voluntary choice by a team to take its designated hitter results in the pitcher having to hit for the remainder of the game. Adam Kolarek, a pitcher, moved to first base, abolishing the DH and leaving him in the lineup as the first baseman. Chaz Roe came in to pitch and replaced first baseman Ji-Man Choi in the lineup. Baseball's Hall of Fame is responsible for the watering down of its own honor and until its best players and contributors are put in, there will be more examples of questionable candidates getting in. The acknowledgment of the WBO heavyweight champion was one of the factors that led to the destruction of its very sport. Around since 1989, the organization failed to acknowledge champions such as Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, and Lennox Lewis.

The Right Time with Bomani Jones

Bomani shares why he feels that it is all too convenient to forget just how good of a player Barry Bonds was when it comes time for Baseball's Hall of Fame inductions every year (0:43). In light of stars electing not to play for the US MBB team at the FIBA World Cup, he analyzes when the "thrill" in participating went away and how to fix (16:40). A story about Chris Paul trying to prevent players from going "broke" reminds him of a conversation he had with his TV producer Erik Rydholm regarding trust another with financial advice (28:24). Plus, a fresh IYHH involving the politician who might've been fired for being a "fan" of Tupac (43:48) and your voicemails of the craziest thing you've seen "heat" do (53:43).

There is no denying the talent that Pete Rose and Barry Bonds showed on the baseball diamond. The both could easily get into Cooperstown based solely on their defensive or offensive ability. The problem is that these top 7 all time players broke the rules of baseball and to this day have not gotten into the hall. Listen to Taylor and Brian discuss why these legends are "ineligible" and see if we can make a case to allow them into Baseball's Hall of Fame.

2-27-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the show by discussing the issues MLB teams have when it comes to gaining an extra season of control. It is a flawed point of view, one in which could be eradicated by simply signing the player to an extension. John also points out the fact that the Cubs may have cost themselves a chance of winning the NL Central in 2015, or at least the first Wild Card spot, by not playing Kris Bryant in the first eight games of the season. John then takes a phone call from "Willie" from Toms River, who asks about Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his recently being in the news. John talks about the need for the NFL to hold owners to the same standards as players and coaches when it comes to its personal conduct policy. If convicted, Kraft should face a suspension of some sorts, from a couple of games to a full season. The severity of the case has to do with whether the girls in question were being trafficked for sex or this was a woman making a living getting paid for the sex. Bruce Bochy is finishing his managerial career in 2019, is he as much a Hall of Fame lock as some think? While three World Series Championships in five seasons have only been done six times, Bochy is likely to finish his career as a manager with a losing record (unless the 2019 Giants win 90 games or more). Out of the other nine managers who have won three or more World Series, all nine are in Baseball's Hall of Fame. John wishes his father John Anthony Pielli a Happy 63'rd Birthday and mentions on February 27, 1956, the Piedmont League, a minor league baseball entity, disbanded after 35 years of business. The Piedmont League was based in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and briefly in Maryland. It was also one of the only minor leagues which continued operations during World War II.

2-21-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the program by mourning the loss of long time Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe. Don was a force in the Dodgers World Series Championship season in 1955 and won 27 games a year later. An extremely prolific figure in the civil rights movement, Newcombe had his MLB career interrupted two separate times. Because of this, he should get more consideration for Baseball's Hall of Fame. John also talks about Vinny Vella's impact on his life and his show. Vinny was a solid actor and comedian and had a show only he could host. Really, nobody else could have successfully hosted his show- his personality and style was perfect for his show. Thanks to Vinny for having John as a guest on his show. John then suggests a change to the rules of Nascar which would give racers another chance if their car either malfunctions or is involved in an accident during a race. Finally, John talks about the difference between being the greatest and being the best, making some points about how it is difficult to quantify how good a player of 100 years ago or 75 years ago is compared to a player over the last 45-50 years. John then lists his top ten MLB position players of all time.

The Detroit Tigers nearly traded for Mariano Rivera back in the 1990's, but they determined that the asking price of David Wells was just too high. As such, they passed on trading for Rivera, who was a starting pitcher at the time. Of course, everybody knows that Mariano Rivera then went on to be the best closer of all time, as he posted 652 saves during his career. And, to top it off, Mariano Rivera recently became the first baseball player to be unanimously elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame! Hats off to Mariano Rivera!

12/26/2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the program by talking about a familiar topic- the Baseball Hall of Fame. After pointing out its hypocrisy, John talks about all the different players that are not in Baseball's Hall of Fame for different reasons. Commissioners like Kenesaw Mountain Landis and Bud Selig are in despite their shortcomings and ignorance. Why is that looked over? What keeps other players who played during the "steroid era" from facing similar circumstantial suspicion that others are being held out for. John then breaks down the NFL playoff scenarios just prior to Week 17- how the AFC South can be won by three different teams, how either the Steelers or Ravens will win the AFC North or not make the playoffs at all, and how if the Philadelphia Eagles make the playoffs... will it be time for them to consider using Nick Foles as their starting quarterback? Finally, the best sports holidays are Thanksgiving (Football), New Years Day (College Football, Hockey) and Christmas (Basketball)- in that order.

11-2-2018 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the program by talking about the passing of Hall of Fame first baseman Willie McCovey. McCovey was a dominant power hitter of his time and his style and approach should be studied by the home run hitters of today. Two fair comparables would be HOF first baseman Willie Stargell and should be Hall of Famer Fred McGriff. John then talks about the disastrous season the Oakland Raiders have had, who is to blame, and is the message is fair enough to say that the future could look bright as the team plans its move to Las Vegas. Could the 1983 Phillies won the World Series if they upgraded at first base instead of playing Pete Rose there? Rose had one of the worst recorded seasons for a regular player in baseball history. As much as Luis Tiant is respected throughout the game of baseball, he falls short when it comes to legitimate consideration for Baseball's Hall of Fame. Finally, some respect and prayers are needed for Glory's Market in Jackson. Terrible job by the local news media to prioritize the traffic conditions over the lives that are at risk and the damage caused to the business.
