"When somebody shows you who they truly are, believe them the first time. From the very beginning, we took Emory at their word when they said they wanted to design and build a cancer center never before seen or imagined." —Anthony Treu on The Healthcare Interior Design 2.0 podcast Step into a world where healthcare spaces nurture healing, empower caregivers, and transform the patient experience. In this inspiring episode, host Cheryl Janis sits down with visionary healthcare architect Anthony Treu, AIA, ACHA, LEED AP, Principal and Healthcare Practice Leader at Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), who is revolutionizing how we think about healthcare design. From a fourth-grader sketching houses to the one of the architects behind award-winning cancer centers at SOM, Anthony shares the remarkable journey of creating spaces that combine cutting-edge innovation with profound human comfort. He and his teams' work on the groundbreaking Emory Winship Cancer Center in Atlanta, Georgia shows us what's possible when we dare to reimagine healthcare delivery from the ground up. Discover how Anthony and his team are creating healthcare environments that feel less like institutions and more like sanctuaries of healing, where high-tech innovation meets human-centered design. This conversation will leave you believing in the power of architecture to transform the healthcare experience. Learn more about Anthony Treu and SOM's pioneering healthcare architecture projects at: https://www.som.com/. SOM partnered with May Architecture, https://www.mayarchitecture.com/ on the Emory Winship Cancer Center project. Anthony credits this collaboration as a cornerstone of the project's success, combining SOM's innovative approach with May Architecture's specialized clinical design expertise. In this enlightening conversation, Cheryl and Anthony explore: The revolutionary spirit behind Emory Winship Cancer Center, where traditional cancer care was completely reimagined to put patients first How rethinking the basic layout of cancer care reduced treatment planning from weeks to a single day The stunning results of patient-centered design: registration times cut in half, satisfaction scores soaring into the 90th percentile, and staff retention improving by 10% The beautiful balance of creating spaces that feel both technologically advanced and warmly inviting How questioning core assumptions – like "Do we really need waiting rooms?" – can lead to breakthrough innovations The future of healthcare spaces, where rooms might quietly monitor vital signs without patients even knowing Anthony's philosophy of approaching each project with fresh eyes, free from the weight of convention Stories from some of SOM's global projects in Egypt and Kazakhstan that reveal universal truths about human-centered healthcare design The exciting frontier of healthcare design, where ambient technology and passive monitoring could transform the patient experience How collaboration and trust between architects, engineers, and visionary clients can turn seemingly impossible dreams into reality The power of asking better questions rather than just designing better solutions Whether you're a healthcare professional, designer, architect, or someone who cares about improving the healthcare experience, this conversation will inspire you to think differently about what's possible in healthcare design. Join us for a masterclass in how thoughtful design can transform not just buildings, but the entire experience of giving and receiving care. Listen to the episode now! Did you know that bathrooms and showers – particularly in shared spaces – are a veritable breeding ground for pathogen, some of which we see in the form of mold and the build-up of toxic bio films on surfaces. Body fats and soap scums provide a rich food sauce for micro-organisms such as airborne bacteria Serratia Marcescens, which thrive in humid conditions. We know that people with weakened immune systems are so much more vulnerable to the illnesses associated with infection and let's face it, none of us go into the shower with an expectation that we might get sick. So how do we keep those shower walls clean? Well let's think big – BIG TILES. Porcelanosa have developed XXL Hygienic Ceramic Tiles that are 5 feet long - which means just one piece fits the wall of a shower or tub surround. XTONE Porcelain slabs are 10 feet high which means a floor to ceiling surface with no joints. Why does this matter? Well hygienic glaze will not harbor pathogen and surface impurities are easily removed to prevent build up – it is reassuring to know the evidence - INTERNATONAL STANDARDS Test ISO 10545 - Resistance to Stains - has determined these surfaces can be easily cleaned and the most difficult contaminants washed away, greatly reducing the need for aggressive chemicals. Think about this. When we unload our dishwasher our ceramic tableware is sparkling clean, sanitized and fresh to use - again and again. The principle is the same with large ceramic walls - So, when planning the shower surrounds for your facilities please reach out to Porcelanosa. The designer in you will love the incredible options and your specification will deliver the longest & best lifecycle value bar none. An investigation by a Waikato University student has revealed no one with a learning disability has ever been asked about, or involved in making any adult literacy policy in New Zealand. Dr Nicolina Newcombe - who recently earned a PhD for her work - also discovered that as a result many adult learner are being excluded from literacy education, and therefore the ability to gain other higher education opportunities. Her study sought to explore the problem, and investigate how policies could be more inclusive - but had the unintended upshot of developing a blueprint for inclusive research more generally. Her thesis explores the methods of gaining consent, researching and informing those who participated. Dr Newcombe, who is autistic and left school at 15 returned to education through a second-chance program. She says the life she has is because of her chance study at a tertiary level and she wanted to explore what changes would promote better access to literacy and literacy education for people with intellectual disabilitie, so that others have this opportunity too.

Newcombe told Heather du Plessis-Allan that she could tell Genter didn't really want to buy flowers and came in with a big attitude. “It's common knowledge that I was opposed every single car park removed from the shopping precinct.” Newcombe said “Perhaps she just wanted to come in, and sort me out.” LISTEN ABOVE. In April 1947, modern day baseball changed forever. That's when Jackie Robinson played his first major league game as a Brooklyn Dodger. After that day, there were a string of African-American firsts in baseball. Four months later, Dan Bankhead of the Dodgers became the first black pitcher to play in a major league game. In 1948, Roy Campanella became the first black catcher. Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians became the first Black player to hit a home run in a World Series. In 1949, there were three African-Americans playing in the World Series when just 3 years earlier Blacks were still excluded from Major League Baseball. All three were playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and pitcher Don Newcombe. Robinson and Campanella would become Hall of Famers, and Newcombe would win both the Cy Young and National League Most Valuable Player awards during the same season. You'll hear all three playing in Game 4 of the 1949 World Series against the Yankees. Newcombe took the mound with only 2 days rest, from striking out 11 Yankees in Game One, but the Yankees won 1-to-nothing and would go on to take the series. Get details at http://krobcollection.com

Round 1, 2024 is upon us. The quicker our pre-season is forgotten the better. It's time to look ahead to what will hopefully be an exciting 2024 and there's no better to start the season than a clash against our arch rivals, Essendon, in front of a 75,000+ crowd at the MCG on a Saturday afternoon. The make up of our Round 1 side will be fascinating. Unfortunately, injuries to key players during the pre-season have made things incredibly difficult for match committee heading into the early rounds of the season.Let's take a look at how I think the team will look in Round 1.The backlineOur first choice full back James Blanck suffered a season ending ACL injury in the intra-club a few week's ago. Talk about a disaster. 25 year old key defender Ethan Phillips, who recently joined Box Hill from Port Melbourne, was promoted to the list and is a chance to play against the Bombers. I think he needs a few weeks at Box Hill and Sam Frost will get the first crack at full back. Frost will have a huge job against Peter Wright this week, and the last time Frost played on Wright, he kicked 6.0. Josh Weddle, Karl Amon & Jarman Impey will provide the run, whilst Jack Scrimshaw & skipper James Sicily will fill the other roles. Our backline is in for a world of pain if our midfield struggles like they have all pre-season.The midfieldPeter Crimmins Medalist, and arguably our best midfielder Will Day suffered a stress fracture in his foot and will miss at least the first 5 weeks of the season. If we are looking at the positives, it will give an opportunity for a couple of our young guns in Cam Mackenzie and Henry Hustwaite to earn a spot in the team over the opening few weeks. Both Mackenzie and Hustwaite were shining lights in the pre-season and will both get opportunities to play early on in the season. For Round 1, there's only room for one. Jai Newcombe will once again lead the midfield and despite playing under 55 games, has become one of the best inside midfielders in the AFL. James Worpel & Connor Nash need to stand up and provide Newcombe with more support. They have both had average pre-seasons and with Day out, the pressure will be on. The Bombers best midfielder is Zach Merrett - does Finn Maginness play to tag Merrett? With Darcy Parish in doubt, the question will be, do the Hawks go head to head, or play a tagger? If Merrett has under 20 touches, the Hawks should win. The wing position is also an interesting watch at selection. Former Bomber Massimo D'Ambrosio has impressed this pre-season and deserves to play against his former team. Josh Ward is another one that's played predominantly wing this pre-season. In my opinion he is not a wingman, but his ability to play inside mid cements his spot in the team. Harry Morrison finished season 2023 in good form and seems to be a Sam Mitchell favourite. I have him just missing out for Round 1.The ruckMajor alarm bells. Ned Reeves had some quality games last season but his issue to run out games and ability to impact around the ground was a big problem. From what I've seen this pre-season, it's going to carry over into season 2024. As we saw last season, the Reeves and Meek combination doesn't work, so unless Reeves is injured, Meek will be playing at Box Hill this season. The forward lineA completely new and exciting look for season 2024. Former Tiger and Sun Mabior Chol has arrived to partner Mitch Lewis & to help Reeves in the ruck. Collingwood premiership player Jack Ginnivan comes in to partner Luke Breust and the exciting number 5 pick in last year's draft, Nick “the Wizard” Watson. Dylan Moore is set to play after suffering glandular fever in the pre-season. His class and leadership will be crucial throughout the season. We also welcome back Jack Gunston, who will provide great experience and leadership. I can see Gunston playing as a swingman early on in the season. Expect him to spend time down in the backline and to play at least 15 games this season. The most interesting move this pre-season has been Blake Hardwick's move forward. Can it work? Here's my team for Round 1:FB: Impey Frost SicilyHB: Scrimshaw Weddle AmonC: D'Ambrosio Nash WardHF: Macdonald Lewis HardwickFF: Breust Chol Ginnivan R: Reeves Newcombe WorpelINT: Watson Gunston Moore Mackenzie (Hustwaite)EMG: Phillips Mitchell Morrison Ramsden Injured (not considered): Day, Wingard, Jiath, Blanck, Grainger-BarrasUnder the pump: James Worpel, Connor Nash, Josh Ward, Sam FrostWhat do we think, Hawks fans? I'm sure you were all shocked to read reports out of Australia this morning that Anton Newcombe allegedly fired / assaulted his guitarist onstage last night (he probably has a name but I cannot be bothered to look it up) and it does seem a genuine shame that a person with so much talent / humility is prone to breaking up his own bands in such a fashion. Which poses the question, wouldn't Newcombe be doing a genuine public service if he attacked other bands' musicians in mid-set and compelled them to quit. I'll be taking calls on this subject sometime between hours 1 and 2 of this week's show, but i'd really like to see how Anton matches up with God's Hate.

With an illustrious career marked by 26 Grand Slam titles, there is no question John Newcombe is a tennis legend. But what doesn't appear on the stat sheet is what separates the Hall of Famer in a league of his own in his native Australia – and the sport of tennis as a whole. In the season finale, John emphasizes the importance of prioritizing self-analysis, visualization and mental fortitude — all in an era prior to sports psychology's normalcy. The pioneer, who turned his practices into the acclaimed book, “The Power Within: How to create a high performance mind” speaks to how his mindset translated towards his tennis game, Aussie comradery, and prioritizing family while on tour around the globe. John Newcombe captured seven major singles titles in 10 opportunities, all of which on grass. Collectively he claimed 34 singles titles and 33 doubles championships, allowing him to become one of the few players to hold the world No. 1 ranking in both singles, (1967, 1970, 1971) and doubles, (1965). John also aided Australia to five Davis Cups prior to being named the Australia's Davis Cup captain from 1995 to 2000 – where he led the team to a 1999 title after a 13-year drought. Gary Bauer and special guest Dr. Jerry Newcombe, executive director of the Providence Forum, discuss “The American Experiment.” Newcombe says this ‘experiment' can be summarized in a key phrase: “self-rule, under God.” If removed, Americans lose the true source of their freedoms—God. Newcombe says, "The Left has their big guns aimed at both of these pillars." In agreement, Bauer adds, “The Left doesn't want to win the debate; the Left wants to shut down the debate.” To hear Bauer and Newcombe discuss America's founding and God-centered heritage, we invite you to listen to this very important podcast.
1951 seemed like the season it would all finally come together in Brooklyn. The Dodgers were led by Catcher Roy Campanella, First baseman Gil Hodges, Outfielder Duke Snider, and now second-baseman, Jackie Robinson. Through one-hundred sixteen games, Brooklyn had seventy wins. On August 11th the New York Giants trailed the Dodgers in the standings by thirteen games. Then, Giants manager Leo Durocher put coach Herman Franks in the Polo Grounds offices in the Giants' clubhouse beyond center field. His objective was to steal opposing catchers' signals. Franks used a telescope to relay signs through an electrical-buzzer system to the Giants' bullpen. From there, the signs would be flashed to the Giants' hitters. The Giants won thirty-seven of forty-four games down the stretch. It forced a tie with the Dodgers in the standings. A three game series was announced to decide the winner of the pennant. At Ebbets field in Game 1, Giants pitcher Jim Hearn out-dueled Dodgers starter Ralph Branca, and the Giants won three to one behind solo home runs from Andy Pafko, Bobby Thomson, and Monty Irvin. The second game, played at The Polo Grounds was a rout, but in favor of Brooklyn. Jackie Robinson had three hits, including a home run, and Dodgers starter Clem Labine went nine. October 3rd, 1951: Game three. The tight, tense affair was played before more than thirty-four thousand fans at the Polo Grounds. Brooklyn struck first when Jackie Robinson had an RBI single in the first inning. The Giants tied it in the seventh when Bobby Thomson hit a Sacrifice Fly. But the Dodgers struck right back, scoring three runs in the eighth. Jackie Robinson was once again in the middle of the action. With Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe dealing, the game seemed all, but over. Then in the bottom of the 9th, The Giants put back-to-back men on. Whitey Lockman doubled to center field to score two runs. It made the score four-to-three. The winning run came up to bat. Ralph Branca came in to relieve Newcombe. Bobby Thompson was the Giants batter. The Giants would face the Yankees in the World Series and the Dodgers would again have to wait until next year.

Before each great political transformation in American life, there was first a great religious transformation. Historian and Providence Forum president Jerry Newcombe joins Charlie to explain how the moral revolution of the First Great Awakening paved the way for the American Revolution and Constitution, and how the spiritual revolt against slavery then drove abolition in the 1800s. Dr. Newcombe then debunks the myths about George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and what they really believed about God, the church, and government.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
26 major titles, 67 tournament wins, 5 Davis Cup titles, World #1 in 1967, the great Australian John Newcombe joined me from the roof of Rod Laver Arena and it was a tremendous thrill. In the 60s and 70s John first served and volleyed his way to tennis fame, and with his signature moustache became one of the most famous people in the world. We talked in length about the modern day Australian Open, the current state of Australian tennis including his thoughts on Tomic, Kokkinakis, and Kygrios. We talked about the plight of The Davis Cup, and he regaled me with stories of his time on tour, including his win at Wimbledon in 1970, beating Rosewall in 5 sets.
