This run would place Neil as world number 5 in at the time.Neil also opens up about his frustration at failing to reach 3 consecutive Olympic Games after falling just short at various qualifiers. There are also stories about meeting boxing legends, Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield thrown in there as well. Finally, we find out how Neil is still involved in amateur boxing in Waterford to this very day. Neil is a proper gentleman and it is a real pleasure sharing his story.

How To Win: Lessons From A Champion

Stuff That Interests Me

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 2025 7:07

I was at a big family function on Christmas Eve, where I ran into my brother-in-law, who used to be a world champion boxer.David Haye is his name. Way back when, his sister and I were married, and he is uncle to my two oldest children. I don't know if that makes him former brother-in-law. Whatever.I still maintain that the world doesn't quite know what an exceptional boxer David was. His speed and power were second to none. The wins in France against Jean-Marc Mormeck to win the cruiserweight World Title, after being knocked down in the fifth, and then in Germany against the unbeaten Russian Nikolai Valuev, who at 23.4 stone and 7 feet, was the largest heavyweight in history, were two of the greatest British overseas wins ever.In winning both cruiserweight and heavyweight world titles, he achieved something only two other boxers, Evander Holyfield before him and Oleksandr Usyk after, have managed. That tells you how good he was. Yet, he is not quite seen in the same light as those other two, largely because of injuries and losses later in his career.I've known David since he was 16, and he was going to be the heavyweight champion even then. It was almost all anyone in the family talked about. What I always most admired about him is his singularity and clarity of purpose; that and his breathtaking, fearless honesty. He hides nothing. He tells it like he sees it and then lives with the consequences. Jordan Peterson would be proud. It's that singularity of purpose - that winning mentality - I want to talk about today. As a youngster, David used to spar with a fighter who was naturally more gifted but never made it through the amateur ranks. “He would rather be the guy who could have made it,” David used to say. “The guy sat in the pub 10 years from now telling everyone he could have made it. He would rather be that than take the necessary risks and make the necessary sacrifices to actually make it.”I was always incredibly struck by that attitude.Burn the ships: have no plan BWe all met up at David's mum and dad's, my old in-laws, on Christmas Eve. All our kids were there, and it was a lovely family do. David's son, Cassius, who is 16, is turning out to be quite the tennis player. I reminded them of a story from when Cassius was seven or eight. We were having lunch, and I said that tennis was a great sport to get good at because, unlike, say, football, if it doesn't work out, you can always get a job as a tennis coach. You can go anywhere in the world and have a pretty nice life.I looked to my right and saw David fuming, “What are you telling him that sh*t for? Why are you putting those kinds of doubts in his head?”I was thinking like a risk-manager, I guess. The sports stars of old always used to get a trade first. Not so David. His mentality reminded me of a story about Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, which I tell in my new book on gold to be published later this year. Cortés landed in Mexico in 1519. His purpose was to find gold and to conquer. He had 508 soldiers and 11 ships. On landing, he scuttled 10 of them. It meant there was no escape. His men now had to win - or die.Speaking of gold, have you signed up for Charlie Morris's monthly gold report, Atlas Pulse? It is, in my view, the best gold newsletter out there, and, best of all, it's free. More here.Later that night, David and I back-and-forthed on texts a bit, and I told him the Cortés story. And so we come to the point of today's missive - and it's an appropriate one, given we are in the season of New Year's resolutions.David sent this message back in reply, which I think is one of the most brilliant texts - about winning, clarity, singularity of purpose - I have ever received. So I publish it in full here:Yes, I've heard the same story, and it's a lesson that resonates deeply with me—not just in the abstract, but in how I've lived my life and shaped the mindset of my children. When Cortés sank his ships, he left his men with no option but to succeed. That's not just a story of conquest; it's a metaphor for the winning mindset. When there's no retreat, no Plan B, the path becomes clear. The mind and body focus completely on achieving the one goal that matters. That same principle was drilled into me from an early age. My dad told me I could box aged 10, but only if I was the best. There was no room for half-hearted effort or second thoughts. From the moment I said I wanted to be the heavyweight champion of the world—the pinnacle of the sport—every decision I made aligned with that goal. There was no ambiguity, no backdoor exit. Winning wasn't just a possibility; it was the only outcome. That's the mindset I've passed on to Cassius and Kingston. He wants to be the best tennis player in the world, and he knows what that means: living full-time in Spain, training in the blazing heat on clay courts, and pushing his body and mind to the limit every single day. He understands, like I did, that greatness demands clarity and sacrifice. It's about burning the ships—eliminating all distractions and doubts—so there's only one way forward.Winning isn't an accident or a stroke of luck. It's the result of relentless dedication and a mindset hardwired from the very start. It's about creating an environment where success is the only option, so the journey becomes as clear as the destination. That's how champions are made—whether in the ring, on the court, or in life.Share this message with a friend. We don't all want to be number one. Many of us are content with what we have. But if you are serious about becoming top dog, then that text message - from someone who has been there and done it - should be put to memory.I look at my own life, and I'm the very opposite: jack of all trades, master of none. Comedian and financial blogger. What - how does that work? I've also been: prolific voiceover artist, podcast host, TV presenter, actor, author of three books, boxing ring announcer (for Hayemaker Boxing - who says nepotism doesn't exist?), and a million other things I can't remember. Even within comedy, my career is disparate: comic songs, stand-up, MC, witty raconteur, lectures with funny bits. Gold or bitcoin - which is it? Why not both...I'm occasionally asked why I am not more well known than I am. There's your answer. I do too many things quite well instead of excelling at one.I think it's partly because I get interested in stuff. But it's also a defensive thing, I'm sure. If one doesn't work out, I've always got the other to fall back on.Here is one of my resolutions for 2025: do fewer things better. What do you think? Please post your thoughts in the comments below.Happy new year, everyone. Let's hope it's a belter.Buying gold to protect yourself in these uncertain times? I recommend The Pure Gold Company. Joined today by the former heavyweight champion of the world, Chris Byrd. Chris reminisces about growing up in Flint, Michigan with 8 siblings, why Boxing was the only thing for him, and his insane amateur career which included over 285 wins. Chris shares why they are calling him “Healthy Byrd”, and after 11 years of pain all over his body how his diet finally resurrected him. Chris and I talk about the legendary 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. We hear why the boxing team did not go to the opening ceremonies, if the Olympic villages are as crazy as we always hear, winning the silver medal, and where all that cool Olympic swag is. We try to find out why Chris wasn't signed by a promotion after the Olympics, we hear about him hustling just to get fights in a nightclub, and how he finally started fighting in big arenas. We go over his crazy boxing schedule, how and why he took the fight in Berlin against Vitali Klitschko, and how he celebrated winning the world title. We discuss the sport of Boxing, working for Don King, and his fight with Evander Holyfield in Atlantic City. Chris shocks everyone when he talks about his comeback fight in January or February 2025. He talks about his desire to be the champion again and why no one will be surprised when he does it again. All this and more with the “CHAMP”

The boxing and social media worlds will collide on Nov. 15 when 58-year-old former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, takes on 27-year-old influencer-turned-boxer Logan Paul in one of the most highly anticipated fights in recent memory. A large portion of the audience will be YouTubers who have only heard about Tyson because he bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear…or maybe they saw him in The Hangover. But “Iron Mike” was once the baddest man on the planet, an undisputed undefeated fighting machine. But that all changed in 1990 when he faced journeyman James “Buster” Douglas in what was supposed to be a tune up before Tyson faced Evander Holyfield. Douglas, a 42-to-1 underdog, shocked the world and took away the title, and Tyson's world spiraled out of control. But what would've happened if Tyson had defeated Douglas and faced Holyfield in the Fight of the Century? Would Tyson's status as champ have helped him through his legal troubles? Would the UFC still have gone mainstream? And how would the careers of Schwartzenegger, Stallone and The Rock have been different? Find out on Alternate Routes. In this episode, we are joined by two-weight world champion David Haye. He's one of only three men - with Evander Holyfield and Oleksandr Usyk - to have won world titles at both cruiserweight and heavyweight. After becoming the first Brit to reach a world amateur final, David turned pro and quickly became known for punching power, as illustrated when he stopped both Jean-Marc Mormeck and Enzo Maccarinelli to become the unified cruiserweight world champion. He then moved up to heavyweight where, despite conceding 7 stone in weight, he beat the giant 7ft-plus Russian Nikolay Valuev to become the WBA champion.  Eventually, he faced Wladimir Klitschko in a unification bout but he was soundly beaten and his post-fight excuse of a broken little toe severely damaged his standing among fight fans. Thereafter, came controversy and frustration: a much-publicised brawl with Derek Chisora in Germany led to a contest between the pair where David was victorious. But, a highly anticipated fight with Tyson Fury fell through as David suffered injuries that would keep him out of the ring for a long time. He eventually returned and fought Tony Bellew twice before retiring following his defeat in their rematch.Despite his success, David has been a sometimes divisive figure with the boxing public. Here, he tackles everything: becoming a two-weight world champion, his defeats to Klitschko and Bellew, why he made some of his controversial statements, and he gives his thoughts on Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. He also explains why Saudi Arabia's takeover is good for boxing and tantalisingly, he reveals whether his career may not yet be over.Subscribe for future episodes and head to http://www.youtube.com/@UpFrontWithSimonJordan for full video episodes. 18+ please gamble responsibly.Warning: this episode contains language that some people may find offensive.

Robert Winfree and Mark Radulich look at all the great fights in boxing history. This time they are presenting their Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk Review.Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, billed as Ring of Fire, was a heavyweight professional boxing match contested between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship. It was scheduled to take place on 17 February 2024 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, then postponed due to a facial injury sustained by Fury in training. It was rescheduled the next day and took place on 18 May 2024 at the same venue. Usyk won by split decision.Usyk broke down in tears in the ring after his victory was announced and dedicated it to his family, his team, and the people of Ukraine. After the fight, Fury commented: "I believe he won a few of the rounds but I won the majority of them … His country's at war, so people are siding with the country at war, but make no mistake, I won that fight … I'll be back. I've got a rematch clause." Fury raised the possibility of a rematch "in October", and eventually declared: "Happy New Year!" Usyk responded to Fury, stating, "If he wants, I'm ready for a rematch." Usyk suffered a suspected broken jaw from the bout and went to the hospital after his press conference.Along with Usyk's team, a few commentators, like TNT Sports' David Haye, felt Usyk was robbed by the referee of a win by technical knockout in the ninth round. Usyk's win made him the first new undisputed heavyweight champion in 24 years. Lennox Lewis held the title for five months after he defeated Evander Holyfield in November 1999. In a post-match analysis, analysts wrote that Usyk's hall of fame case is "beyond cemented" and that he is an all-time great after his win. Two-division undisputed champion Terence Crawford, ESPN's top-ranked pound for pound boxer, declared Usyk a candidate for the No. 1 position. The tentatively scheduled rematch is set for 12 October 2024.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsoFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76

Hour 1 Boomer was at UBS Arena last night with the family as his Rangers lost to the Islanders. Late in the game, Vincent Trocheck was hit from behind and there was no call. Boomer said we will see you Saturday at the Garden where it will be payback time for that. Jerry is here for his first update and starts with the sounds of Islanders beating the Rangers. We talked about the controversial hit on Trocheck. Jalen Brunson scored 45 as the Knicks beat the Bulls. The Yankees won again and Verdugo hit another HR and he talked about it. The Yanks have now started 10-2. The Mets lost to the Braves 6-5. They were down 6-0 at one point. John Calipari released a video talking about his time at Kentucky. Boomer said Scott Drew of Baylor will wind up at Kentucky. In the final segment of the hour, a caller is sick of Boomer crying all morning about the Rangers loss to the Islanders.  Hour 2 Gio thinks the Yankees are going to have an incredible year. Every other time they've started 10-2, they have gone to the World Series. It has happened 3 times prior to this. Gio said it's a lock that they are going. If the Mets are out of it before the trade deadline they have to trade Pete Alonso. Gio thinks Carlos Mendoza and the Mets took a moral victory last night because they fought back even though they didn't win. Boomer keeps comparing every topic to the Rangers. JD Martinez had to get a cortisone shot and will not pick up a bat for another 3-5 days. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds from last night's Yankees win against the Marlins. The Mets were down 6-0 to the Braves and eventually lost 6-5. There was also a controversial hit in the Rangers/Islanders game. In the final segment of the hour, the Lakers finally fixed all the misspellings on the Kobe Bryant statue. A caller wonders if in the playoffs, would Boomer consider putting his granddaughter's Islanders jersey in the freezer. We also wondered what the Boomer statue is going to look like.  Hour 3 Boomer went to UBS Arena last night and said it's chaos leaving that place. The Cross Island Parkway is like the Indy 500. Boomer listened to John Batchelor on WOR about fiscal policy or something. A caller said the Islanders may have won the game, but they got outplayed 2 of the 3 periods. A caller said Gilbert Arenas said people don't want to play in NY because of the media. Stephen A. Smith was hyping up Grimes on the Knicks. Unfortunately he doesn't play there anymore. We also talked about LIV and the Ryder Cup. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the sounds of last night's Knicks win over Chicago. Giannis was injured last night but the MRI came back clean. A caller wanted to talk to ‘butthurt Boomer'. The Yankees keep winning and the Marlins keep losing. Alex Verdugo hit a home run and was barking in the dugout after. The Mets lost in Atlanta as Alonso struck out to end the game. He hit a homer earlier. In the final segment of the hour, Eddie is wearing an old shirt from Taz that references ‘yambag'. We weren't sure what that meant, so we looked it up on urban dictionary. A caller said Sal said the Yankees winning isn't sustainable and it's pissing him off.  Hour 4 The Masters starts tomorrow and Boomer wonders if Gio's made his picks for the various pools he's in. Somehow we got on bizarre sports moments and Boomer brought up Antonio Brown taking off his jersey and shoulder pads and just quitting at MetLife Stadium. We then talked about Tyson biting Holyfield's ear and Randy Johnson killing the bird. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with the Knicks beating the Bulls in Chicago last night. The Yankees beat the Marlins as Alex Verdugo homered. Mike Francesa has had enough of the eclipse talk. The Mets lost to the Braves 6-5. The Islanders beat the Rangers with Boomer in the house. There was a controversial ‘vicious' hit. Be careful who you bet in the Masters as two golfers have wives that may go into labor during the tournament. The Moment of The Day involves Boomer battling the Islanders callers after they beat the Rangers last night.
