It happened this show, trying to recall a famous name from the 1990s and going through the steps with your mind to get there. Is it Alzheimer’s? No, and Dr. Kimberly Mueller, an associate professor at UW-Madison and researcher at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, was there firsthand to explain it. Mueller joined the show ahead of her visit to town to give us a look at the current state of dementia and Alzheimer’s research. We dive into the “blood test revolution” making early detection easier, the local impact of the WRAP study at Mayo in La Crosse, and the lifestyle changes that actually work for prevention — all while getting a glimpse into how an expert in the field spends a typical day. We began the conversation by discussing why these “tip of the tongue” moments — like trying to recall the Mark McGwire using creatine to hit homers scandal — are actually a standard part of typical aging that many of us notice as early as our 40s. Mueller explains that even experts in the field experience these lapses, but she clarifies the specific “red flag” for when word-finding transitions from a normal annoyance to a medical concern. That McGwire connection led to a deeper look at the diagnostic side of the field, where simple blood tests are now replacing invasive brain scans to detect changes earlier than ever before. Much of this data comes from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer’s Prevention (WRAP) — one of the largest studies of its kind — which operates a research site right here at Mayo Clinic in La Crosse. From there, the discussion shifted to the prevention side of the research, exploring why heart health and exercise are proving more effective than “brain games.” Mueller explains that while staying active might not stop the biological proteins of Alzheimer’s from forming, keeping your cardiovascular system in check is a major reason dementia prevalence is actually starting to trend downward. Lastly, we asked Mueller what a professor who researches, studies, and teaches about dementia does in a typical day. Mueller explains her expertise in studying the brain by listening to the way we speak. She breaks down how her team uses digital recordings to analyze “acoustic measures” — the subtle timing, pauses, and sounds within our speech — to identify microscopic red flags that the human ear simply cannot hear. Baseball's back for the summer of 2026 and what better way to get in the mood than to take a look at one of the most electrifying sports stories of all time...the 1998 Major League Baseball Home Run Record Chase. This epic chase to break the hollowed home run record started off with 2 known power houses , Ken Griffey Jr. and Mark McGwire chasing Roger Maris' hollowed record the previous 4 seasons .These previous outings injected excitement back in to the sport after the catastrophic MLB strike of 1994 that cut off Griffey's record pace by 50 games and saw the cancelation of the World Series. Fans tuned out in droves and baseball's favor was at an all time low. Then by June of 1998 a little known Sammy Sosa threw his cap in to the race to make it a 3 man race to 62 HR's by season end. Griffey would cool down ("only" hitting 56 homers ) but Big Mac and Sammy would go neck and neck and surpass the record at 70 and 66 HR's by seasons end in dramatic exciting fashion. Let's hear from Missouri Republican Senator Kit Bond.…. September 29th, 1998 …. the year that St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Mark McGwire captivated the sports world by hitting a then-record 70 home runs, shattering Roger Maris' 1961 record of 61: "Mark McGwire is a man of immense physical stature, conditioning and strength. When I met him I was overwhelmed with his size and muscle. But he is a man of great mental dedication, of great concentration, determination, and--reading the column in today's Washington Post by Tom Boswell--probably possessing other extraordinary capabilities of which we mere mortals cannot be aware." That quote from Senator Bond reminds us of something happy: It's the beginning of the baseball season. But also, something sad: Senator Bond citing the Washington Post sports page reminds us: there used to be a Washington Post sports page. Now, it's gone. But we bring it back for the annual "Extreme Mortman" baseball episode. How do we pull that off? By hearing Congress talk about the Post sports section – and its writers … What have members of Congress said about the Washington Post sports section? Which Washington Post sports writers have been recognized by Congress? And what do they all say about baseball. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this episode of Kenny The Sports Guy Podcast, Kenny dives into one of baseball's most debated legacies — the career of Sammy Sosa. Once one of the most electrifying sluggers in the game, Sosa captivated fans during the historic home run chase with Mark McGwire during the 1998 season, helping bring baseball back into the spotlight after the 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike. But despite hitting 609 career home runs, winning the 1998 NL MVP, and becoming a global icon with the Chicago Cubs, Sosa still remains on the outside looking in when it comes to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Why hasn't one of the most prolific power hitters in history been inducted? Kenny examines the numbers, the controversy surrounding baseball's steroid era, and the complicated legacy that has kept Sosa out of Cooperstown. Is he a Hall of Famer who has been unfairly judged, or does the era he played in define how history remembers him? Join Kenny as he breaks down The Hall of Famer That Wasn't: Sammy Sosa. ⚾

Hawk recaps the first 48 minutes of a recent Joe Rogan Experience episode featuring comedian Jim Brewer, and it does not disappoint. Joe Rogan and Jim Brewer open with the redacted Jeffrey Epstein autopsy report, zeroing in on a medical detail — Epstein allegedly had no prostate — while the body that was autopsied reportedly did. That discrepancy fuels a lengthy Epstein body double theory, with Rogan firmly believing Jeffrey Epstein is alive and living in Israel. A newly surfaced DOJ email in which an assistant US attorney refers to investigating the murder of Jeffrey Epstein adds another layer to the confusion, since Rogan and Brewer don't even think Epstein is dead. The Epstein files also reference hidden hard drives stashed in storage units across the country, which somehow leads Rogan into a rant about Storage Wars being fake. The conversation then shifts to baseball, steroids, Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, and the Balco lab before arriving at what Hawk calls the centerpiece of the episode: the Tall Biden Conspiracy. Jim Brewer believes Joe Biden has been dead for years, replaced by a taller body double in a Biden mask whose gait, height, and eye color were all noticeably different from the real Biden. Rogan conducts a full physical analysis of video footage. Neither man detects the irony of warning against conspiracy theories moments later. Hawk reflects on his own history with the Joe Rogan podcast, including a 2020 episode with Dr. Michael Osterholm that accurately predicted COVID's devastating toll — before Rogan went off the rails with COVID conspiracies, antivax rhetoric, and guests like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Robert Malone.
Ellen Adair and Eric Gilde discuss the 2001 film "61*." They introduce the film (1:10), with an overview of the story, the cast, and filmmakers, and review the 20-80 baseball scouting grades for rating the film, with a new metaphor (5:51). In Amount of Baseball (14:41), they discuss the use of actual Mark McGwire footage, the strength of this tool throughout, and the impact of the authenticity. There is a player comp. Baseball Accuracy (20:39) starts off with discussion of Billy Crystal as Mantle's friend and "Rain Man" on set, and then delves into the history, talking about Ford Frick, Fay Vincent, and the asterisk itself, Roger Maris and Babe Ruth plate appearances, Maris and Mantle's relationship with the press, Pascual or Ramos, the imbalanced AL/NL in 1961, Babe Ruth breaking Ned Williamson's record, Maris trade rumors, Mantle running to first in three seconds, Joe DiMaggio Jerk-o-meter, Moose Skowron, Elston Howard, Billy Martin escapades, Maris signing an X on a ball, Rogers Hornsby, Casey Stengel and Mantle, the slick nickname, Mantle's arm injury, Hoyt Wilhelm and Tom Candiotti. Storytelling (54:16) considers everything added by the inclusion of the McGwire framing device, the function of Claire Ruth and Pat Maris in the story, the opening day scene, and the handling of exposition. There are a few small instances of Shakespearing. The scouts discuss the nuanced depiction of male friendship, the character of the media, the character of Bob Cerv, and the cinematography and lighting. The Score Tool (1:24:53) discusses the main theme, the volume of the score, and songs by The Ventures, Bobby Darin, and the Shirelles. Why TF is there a Lyle Lovett song? Acting (1:31:20) pretty much worships Barry Pepper, Thomas Jane, Bruce McGill, Michael Nouri, Richard Masur, Peter Jacobson, Seymour Cassel, Chris Bauer, Anthony Michael Hall, Christopher McDonald and Joe Grifasi, plus the rest of the ensemble. Delightfulness of Catcher (1:51:17) considers 17% of Yogi Berra and not enough Elston Howard. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:52:44) revels in both the accuracy and the high delight of the depictions of Phil Rizzuto, with all of his Rizzuto catchphrases and digressions, and Mel Allen trying to reign him in. Ellen has a (Rizzuto-esque?) digression into a comparison with "Eight Men Out." In Lack of Misogyny (1:59:51), they discuss Mantle's womanizing, and how it's tempered with Maris's point of view, consideration of Pat's perspective, and the existence of female fans. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (2:04:31), Six Degrees of Baseball (2:07:28), Favorite Moment (2:08:09) Least Favorite Moment (2:11:04), Scene We Would Have Liked to See (2:12:52), Dreamiest Player (2:15:49), Favorite Performance (2:16:30), and Next Time (2:19:05). Join the Veterans Breakfast Club for an unforgettable evening with Colonel John R. Bates, USMC (Ret.), whose extraordinary 39-year career in the United States Marine Corps (1966–2005) spans three wars, five decades, and a lifetime of service defined by courage, conviction, and grit. Col. Bates enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1966, dropping out of college to join the fight in Vietnam. There, as a young infantryman with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, he endured some of the most harrowing combat of the war—earning three Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in battle. The first came when he was struck in the chest by machine-gun fire—“like standing over home plate with Mark McGwire swinging for the fences,” he recalls. The second came from a hand grenade explosion that drove searing shrapnel into his leg. The third was the most brutal: he fell into a North Vietnamese punji pit and was impaled through the foot by a three-foot bamboo stake, coated with water buffalo manure to ensure infection. After spending 23 days in intensive care, Bates defied medical orders, walked out of the hospital in a pair of boots and a hospital gown, caught a ride to the airfield, and returned to his platoon—still spitting up blood. “They needed more trigger-pullers,” he said simply. But the Marine Corps discharged him less than two years into his enlistment due to the severity of his wounds. He refused to stay out. Over the next seven years, Bates earned a bachelor's and two master's degrees while working as a brakeman, heavy equipment operator, and substitute teacher. All the while, he trained daily to prove he still had what it took to wear the uniform. He submitted five applications for readmission to the Corps—finally earning acceptance in 1975, not by sympathy, but by sheer persistence. “Quite honestly, I think I wore them down,” he said. As an officer, Col. Bates served around the globe, including in Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He held numerous command positions, culminating in a dramatic parachute landing into his own retirement ceremony in 2005 at Camp Pendleton. Along the way, he promoted his own son to the rank of Marine captain, honoring a legacy of service that began with his father, Leland Bates, who flew 51 combat missions in World War II. We're grateful to UPMC for Life for sponsoring this event!

BT and Sal vented their frustration over how the Steroid Era has tainted Aaron Judge's latest achievement of reaching 50 home runs for the fourth time in his career, a mark only previously reached by Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGwire. The hosts argued that by including Sosa and McGwire, whose numbers are linked to performance-enhancing drugs, MLB is unfairly diluting Judge and Ruth's honest accomplishments. They demanded that baseball stop acknowledging the "cheaters" in historical contexts, as it clouds the impressive nature of Judge's clean-slate success and sends a confusing message to new generations of fans.

The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 307 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the diamond discussing Mark McGwire.“Big Mac” made a splash in Major League Baseball after a successful college career at USC.At 6'5” 220 lbs., the enormous first baseman unanimously won the 1987 American League Rookie of the Year when he clubbed a then-rookie record 49 home runs for the Oakland Athletics.Along with his “Bash Brother” partner, Jose Canseco, McGwire helped lead the A's to three straight AL pennants from 1988-1990 and won a World Series in 1989.Though injuries and the 1994 MLB strike prevented McGwire from producing effectively, his final two and a half seasons in Oakland saw him club 125 home runs before he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals midway through the 1997 campaign.Yet it was 1998 when McGwire was celebrated as the “Savior of Baseball” after the negative fallout from the 1994 strike.McGwire broke Roger Maris' single-season home run record, and finished 1998 with 70 on the season! He hit another 65 in 1999 and hit a combined 61 in 2000 and 2001 before his retirement.Sadly, these records came at a price. McGwire, thought to be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame as a 12x All-Star with 583 career home runs, was caught up in the scandal surrounding performance enhancing drug use in MLB during the 1990s and 2000s.McGwire eventually admitted he took steroids during a 2010 interview with Bob Costas, and has been left out of Cooperstown like so many of his contemporaries who made the same choice.Watch, Subscribe & Comment on All Platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-sports-experience-podcast-with-chris-quinn/id1529622054Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1esgBLz04MZYrTgYMk5DvaConnect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: https://www.instagram.com/cquinncomedy/Dominic DiTolla: https://www.instagram.com/ditolladominic/Ty Engle:https://www.instagram.com/ty_englestudio/S.E.P.: https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexperiencepodcast/If you enjoy our podcast, please help support us:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast#markmcgwire#baseball#oaklandathletics#stlouiscardinals#baseballplayer#mlb#baseballhistory
