SEASON 4 EPISODE 31: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Do you want to hear the real lesson of this week’s Democratic landslide? Mamdani ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Sherrill ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Spanberger ran on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Prop 50 won on your money issues and that Trump equals death. Hey, you can do both at the same time! Who knew? Not difficult. Easy to remember. Useful on all occasions. Worked in New York, where they elected a socialist when only a quarter of the voters say they are socialists. Worked in Virginia, where they elected as governor an ex-congresswoman born in Jersey. Worked in Jersey, where they elected as a governor an ex-congresswoman born in Virginia. Money Issues, and Trump Equals Death. Useful on all occasions. It’s a floor wax AND a dessert topping. Of course the context is just as much fun as the lesson. That's becauseTrump not only doesn’t realize he got the S kicked out of him, but he doesn’t realize he’s already forced himself to both end the government shutdown and lose the government shutdown. “Trump wasn’t on the ballot,” Trump screamed. “And ‘Shutdown’… were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections...” Ah, poor Trump. Metaphorically, Trump not only was on the ballot - every ballot but he was on the ballot in the worst possible way. Everybody could vote no on him, but it was almost impossible to vote YES. The lame duck politician’s worst nightmare. And right now no duck is lamer than Trump. Democrats: run on your money issues and that Trump equals death. It’s a floor wax and a dessert topping! ALSO: No, I am not going to sanewash Dick Cheney, even after his passing. Yes, at the end, when it was loyalty to the country or Trump he chose the country and it's good to finish strong. But I will still remember him for that 9/11-Iraq exploitation thing. And I am still proud that - as you'll hear - I pissed him off enough as Vice President for him to publicly clap back. B-Block (30:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Roger Stone, who helped advance the deplorable Laura Loomer, is now shocked she's deplorable. Similarly Ben Shapiro, who helped sell Tucker Carlson's evil to the far right, is now shocked he's evil. And I-Never-Winsome Earle-Sears and scabby Fox host Charlie Hurt think Barack Obama not voting for her when he voted for Kamala Harris is hypocritical (so...Earle-Sears voted for Kamala, and Hurt voted for Spanberger?) C-Block (40:30) SPORTSBALLCENTER: You probably aren't interested in my thoughts on the latest new selection committee and the latest eight nominees for baseball's Hall of Fame (though I have many of them). But you may be entertained by the sagas of the previous selection committees and the legend of how the ex-players on them used to cast "courtesy votes" for their old buddies and one year Ted Williams and the others screwed up and accidentally cast way too many of them for a not-so-Hall-of-Famish catcher named Rick Ferrell and he actually got elected.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
BT & Sal dive into the highly anticipated Contemporary Baseball Era Player Ballot for the Hall of Fame Class of 2026, dropping fiery first-instinct votes on names like Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Dale Murphy. The central focus is on Don Mattingly, as the hosts debate whether his brilliant-but-brief peak, including an MVP and a near-miss MVP season, should finally secure his plaque, comparing his case to the two-time MVP Dale Murphy. They dissect the arguments for Mattingly and other controversial figures, acknowledging that for some, this ballot could be their final chance at induction.
BT & Sal ignite the mic, dissecting the Contemporary Baseball Era Hall of Fame Ballot, making their fiery picks and discussing the fate of controversial legends like Bonds and Clemens, alongside fan favorites Don Mattingly, Dale Murphy, and Jeff Kent. The debate shifts to the Giants' season of total doom, with the hosts declaring it's "over" for Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen. They argue the organization must undergo a "clean house" reboot, keep Jaxson Dart a "freeze all assets" trade deadline mandate, and hire an experienced head coach, contrasting the mess with Sean Payton's quick Denver turnaround. Finally, they dive into the urgent need to "save Dart" from his own reckless, though admired, style of play and analyze Aaron Glenn's contentious media strategy, concluding that only wins will validate his hard-line approach.

In Episode 261 of Outside The Round, host Matt Burrill sits down with Alabama native Clever for a genre-spanning conversation that follows his journey from Gadsden to the hip-hop world of Los Angeles and now into the heart of Nashville's creative community. They discuss the rich musical culture of Alabama, his early success in hip-hop, and how transitioning into country music became a natural evolution rather than a pivot. Clever opens up about balancing family life with a demanding career, the importance of collaboration, and staying grounded in an ever-changing industry. With stories from the road, lessons from the business, and reflections on artistic identity, this episode captures Clever's unique voice and vision as he celebrates the release of his new album Coyote, available now on all platforms. The Atlanta Braves may not be able to climb out of the hole they've dug and make a run this season, but there are still boxes to check before the end of September. Grant McAuley delves into what the Braves can focus on over the final 7 weeks of the season. From getting some key players healthy and back on the field, including Chris Sale and Ronald Acuña Jr., to sizing up some young players who could factor into 2026, there are still things for the Braves to key in on. You'll hear from Sale on his impending return and young gun Hurston Waldrep, who has impressed in two recent appearances. This week's special interviews include a visit with Craig Mish of Sports Grid and FanDuel Sports Florida to discuss the surging Miami Marlins and what this season means for a young club that hopes to be on the rise. We'll also revisit a trade that shocked Braves fans in 1990 as Atlanta legend Dale Murphy explains how he ended up Philadelphia some 35 years ago. From The Diamond airs live on 92-9 The Game in Atlanta on Sundays throughout baseball season. You can also subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Every episode of the show and more great Braves coverage is available at FromTheDiamond.com.
July 29, 2025 Hour 2. Bryce Harper and Rob Manfred not seeing eye to eye. Ryan Sanberg and Dale Murphy were a big part of 80's baseball on TV.
In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Carolyn and I talk about making decisions and intentionality vs. circumstance, need, and necessity. We then go on to talk more about Carolyn's lifelong love of sports. She shares the story of her maternal grandmother coming from The Philippines to live with them and how they'd watch games together. It was the days when, in much of the country, if you wanted to watch Major League Baseball, it was all Atlanta Braves, all the time (thanks to TBS, of course). Carolyn became a Braves fan, especially a fan of Dale Murphy. She watched football, too. She didn't watch the Giants on TV much, because every game wasn't televised in those days. But she could easily hop on Muni to see a game at Candlestick Park. Her dad often picked them up, showing up at the ballpark around the seventh inning, getting in free, and watching the end of the game with Carolyn and her friends and/or sisters. We go on a short sidebar about bundling up in San Francisco—at Candlestick and if you just wanted to go to the beach. In addition to Candlestick, she went to Warriors games a bit and also various sporting events at Cow Palace. Her dad learned how to bowl and would take his kids with him. We fast-forward a bit to hear about Carolyn's years in high school, when she went to the all-girl school Mercy High (which is now closed). Later, she took the same bus, the 29, to SF State that she had taken to Mercy. State was the only college she applied to. We talk a little about her decision not to leave San Francisco for school. In high school, she had decided that she wanted to be a sports writer. In fact, she aimed to become the first woman anchor at ESPN. We rewind a bit to talk about some of the journalism Carolyn did in high school. She had her own column in the school paper called “Off the Bench.” She shares a fun story of calling the Braves' front office to arrange for an interview with her favorite player—Murphy—the next time Atlanta rolled into town. In her third semester at SF State, Carolyn got pregnant. Around this time, she also took her first Asian-American Studies class, something that kicked in for her and stays with her to this day. She dove in head-first. I ask Carolyn whether and how much of that history her parents were aware of. She says that, for them, much of it was just things going on in their lives in the city they came to—things like the strike at SF State or the demonstrations at the I-Hotel in Manilatown. Learning more and more about the history of her people in the US lead Carolyn to confront her dad. “Why did you bring us here?” she'd ask. She ended up raising her first child, a mixed-race kid, as a single parent around this time in her life. She had figured that her son's dad would bring the kid the Blackness in his life, and she'd bring the Filipino-ness. Her own ideas of how best to raise the kid had to evolve, and they did, she says. She eventually returned to State and graduated. She lived in South City for a hot minute, held three jobs, and raised her son. She never felt that she couldn't leave The Bay. It was more, “Why would I?” Then, because if you know Carolyn Sideco, well, you know … then we talk about New Orleans. New Orleans is why and how Carolyn came into my life. My wife is borderline obsessed with The Crescent City. I'd been there some earlier in my life, growing up not too far away and having some Louisiana relatives. Erin and I spent three weeks in fall 2022 in a sublet in Bywater, Ninth Ward. That NOLA fever caught on for me then, and I'm hooked. Back home sometime after that, Carolyn came across Erin's radar. “There's a woman in San Francisco who seems to love New Orleans as much as I do and she has a house there!” Erin would tell me. In 2024, at a vegan Filipina pop-up at Victory Hall, we finally met this enigmatic woman. We ended up spending Mardi Gras this year at Carolyn's house in New Orleans—Kapwa Blue. “New Orleans has been calling me for about 20 years,” Carolyn says. One of her younger sisters lived there awhile. Her oldest son served in AmeriCorps there for three years and kept living in New Orleans four more. Carolyn and other members of her family visited often. This was around the time that Hurricane Katrina hit and devastated Southern Louisiana. A little more than a decade ago, Carolyn learned of the historical markers in the area that told the stories of Filipinos being the first Asians to settle in that part of the world. (Longtime listeners of Storied: SF might recall that Brenda Buenviaje hails from just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans.) As Carolyn learned more and more of the Filipino history in the region, that calling started to make more and more sense. Three years ago or so, her oldest son got married in New Orleans. That visit told Carolyn that she, too, could live there. Her husband devised a plan, and with some of Carolyn's cousins, they bought a house in the Musician's Village part of town, near the Ninth Ward—the aforementioned Kapwa Blue. They intended to bring that same sense of community her parents found and participated in back in San Francisco all those decades ago to their new neighborhood New Orleans. In addition to the house, Carolyn helped found tours of Filipino history in New Orleans and the surrounding area. Find them Bayou Barkada Instagram at @bayoubarkada Back in The City these days, Carolyn has her own sports consultancy called Coaching Kapwa (IG). “I call myself ‘Your sports relationship coach,'” she says. This means that she provides comfort and advice to anyone interacting with any of the various sports ecosystems. She aims to apply the idea of kapwa to an otherwise competition-driven sports landscape. We end the podcast (and the season) with Carolyn's interpretation of the theme of Storied: San Francisco, Season 7: Keep it local. She shares what that idea means for her here as well as how it pertains to her time in New Orleans. We'll be taking August off as far as new episodes go. I'll be busy putting together the first episodes of Season 8 and getting ready for the season launch party/art opening. “Every Kinda People” kicks off at Mini Bar on Sept. 4. That's also the theme of the next 20 or so episodes of this show. As always, thank you deeply and sincerely for listening/reading/sharing/liking/commenting/DMing/emailing/subscribing/rating/showing up and really any type of interaction you do with this passion project of mine. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for April 30th Publish Date: April 30th Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Wednesday, April 30th and Happy Birthday to Isiah Thomas ***04.30.25 - BIRTHDAY – ISIAH THOMAS*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Sheffield Sails to Victory in South Cobb Commission Race Murph's Restaurant to Close for Galleria Remodel, Future Uncertain Cobb EMC Directors Look Back on Scandal, Discuss Looming Term Limits All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: TIDWELL TREES_FINAL STORY 1: UPDATE: Sheffield Sails to Victory in South Cobb Commission Race Incumbent Commissioner Monique Sheffield secured a decisive victory over Republican challenger Matthew Hardwick, winning 64.46% of the vote to Hardwick's 35.54%, ensuring south Cobb's District 4 remains under Democratic representation. Sheffield, first elected in 2020, celebrated the win at her Mableton home and emphasized her commitment to serving all constituents, regardless of party affiliation. Her victory, alongside Democrat Erick Allen's in District 2, restores the Cobb County Commission's Democratic majority. Hardwick, the first Republican to run for the seat in years, narrowed Sheffield's early voting lead but fell short. Sheffield's next term will focus on health and wellness in her district. STORY 2: Murph's Restaurant to Close for Galleria Remodel, Future Uncertain The future of Murph’s, a restaurant and bar opened by Braves legend Dale Murphy in 2017, is uncertain as the Cobb Galleria Centre undergoes a major remodel. The Galleria’s renovation, set to begin this fall, includes demolishing the space where Murph’s is located. Initially assured they’d be part of the remodel, the Murphys were recently informed their restaurant is no longer in the plans. Despite strong community support and success, Murph’s is set to close in August. The Murphys hope to negotiate a solution in an upcoming meeting with Galleria management but are also exploring other location options near Truist Park. STORY 3: Cobb EMC Directors Look Back on Scandal, Discuss Looming Term Limits Cobb EMC has rebounded from a decade of scandal under former CEO Dwight Brown, who was accused of self-dealing and mismanagement, leaving the co-op in financial turmoil. Since then, a new board elected in 2011-2012 has transformed the organization, achieving some of the lowest electric rates in Georgia and top national reliability. However, term limits approved in 2012 mean the entire board will be replaced between 2026 and 2028, raising concerns about the loss of institutional knowledge. While directors support term limits, some suggest staggering turnover to ease transitions. The co-op remains in strong standing, with members set to elect new leadership in the coming years. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 1 STORY 4: UPDATE: Erick Allen Wins Cobb District 2 Seat, Restores Democratic Majority on Commission Democrat Erick Allen has won the vacant District 2 seat on the Cobb County Board of Commissioners, securing 58.6% of the vote against Republican Alicia Adams' 41.4%. Allen's victory, alongside Monique Sheffield's projected win, restores the board's Democratic majority. The District 2 seat was vacated in February after Jerica Richardson's removal due to a redistricting battle. Allen emphasized unity in his victory speech, pledging to bring the fractured district together. Adams, despite her loss, highlighted her campaign's focus on giving a voice to underrepresented constituents. Allen's leadership is expected to strengthen collaboration across the county and state levels. STORY 5: 'Apples and Dump Trucks': Cobb Schools Approves Band Loan, New Scoreboard Cobb Superintendent Chris Ragsdale defended the district’s processes after approving a $50,000 loan for Pebblebrook High School’s band uniforms and a $439,497 privately funded scoreboard for Walton High. The Pebblebrook loan, to be repaid over five years, is one of the few exceptions the district makes for extracurricular funding. Walton’s scoreboard, funded by private donations, required board approval due to its cost exceeding $200,000. Ragsdale emphasized that all projects, regardless of funding source, must follow district procedures. Board members highlighted the importance of supporting programs like Pebblebrook’s large, nationally recognized band while maintaining clear policies for funding and approvals. Break: TIDWELL TREES_FINAL STORY 6: Head of North Cobb Christian Renews 4-Year Contract Todd Clingman, head of North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, has renewed his contract for another four years, extending his tenure to 22 years. Clingman, who joined the 55-acre private Christian school in 2007, has been praised by Board President Todd Rainwater for his mission-driven leadership and transformative impact on the school’s community and campus. The board expressed gratitude for Clingman’s dedication to the school’s vision and values, celebrating his continued leadership as he prepares for his 18th year in the role. STORY 7: Marietta Resident Receives Outstanding Master’s Student Award Claire Warner of Marietta was honored with the Outstanding Master's Student Award from Georgia State University's College of Education & Human Development during the spring 2025 Honors Day Ceremony. The award recognizes her exceptional scholarship and clinical service in the communication sciences and disorders master's program. We’ll have closing comments after this. Grant McAuley discusses how the latest injury issues could affect Atlanta's stretch drive, with none bigger than the uncertainty surrounding third baseman Austin Riley. He was hit by a pitch on the right hand and is set to undergo further testing as the club returns home. Between that, Jorge Soler's hamstring issue, and potential season-ending surgery for A.J. Minter, it was a tough stretch for the club on the health front. Not all was doom and gloom, however. Chris Sale continued his run of dominance this season and could be poised to do something no Braves pitcher has done since 1889! Teammate Marcell Ozuna is also in the running for a pretty special distinction if he can finish strong over the final six weeks. Atlanta is set to welcome Reynaldo Lopez back from the IL this week and benefiting from the play of two injury replacements -- Whit Merrifield and Ramon Laureano. The legend of Grant Holmes continued against the Giants and Charlie Morton reached a major strikeout milestone as well on this trip. We'll get into that and much more in "This Week in Braves Baseball." Special guest Brad Rowland of Hammer Territory joins the show to discuss the road trip, the injuries and what's ahead for the Braves as the get set for a showdown with the Philadelphia Phillies this week at Truist Park. Be sure to subscribe to Hammer Territory wherever you get your podcasts. Also, from the archives this week, Braves great Dale Murphy shares his memories and the rationale behind the 1990 trade that sent him to the Phillies some 34 years ago.
