As an athlete, part of the climb is reaching the top and often, fame and wealth steal the spotlight, but what's not really discussed, is how a simple game can shape one's identity and provide purpose. In a recent conversation on The Pivot, former MLB All-Star Matt Kemp joins Ryan, Channing, and Fred to unravel the multifaceted journey of life as a professional baseball player. Kemp shares a blend of funny anecdotes and honest reflections, providing a glimpse into the complexities of his career from a small town guy to the big lights of Los Angeles, and the extra pressures that came with playing in the limelight of a big city. From the challenges of adapting to life in various cities to the weight of fame under the spotlight of Los Angeles, Kemp's experiences paint a picture of the highs and lows that come with being a professional athlete. As Matt navigated the transition into retirement, He compares that time in his life to mourning a family death, juggling all the emotions of losing something you love while facing the uncertainties that lie ahead. In 2011 Matt Kemp finished second in National League MVP voting to Ryan Braun, and he talks about his reaction to later finding out Braun tested positive for PEDs that season. He won the Hank Aaron Award that year, though, and Kemp reflects on being biracial in baseball as well as the African-American mentors he had in the sport. Still tough to rationalize missing out on that feat, Matt talks about life now, and leaving the baseball to pursue mentorships and other business endeavors. Throughout the episode, Kemp provides valuable insights into broader themes such as race, identity, and the ever-evolving landscape of rookie vs veterans in the locker room. Playing for the LA Dodgers came with high expectations between living in Hollywood, access to celebrities combined with a fast pace lifestyle while putting up a league high MLB numbers, Matt shares how the pressures sometime were too much to handle and only increased as his personal life took center stage to media outlets and blogs. The guys chat about Matt's adjustment to fame- from the media's accountability to the dating scene, which Channing can't help but ask about his relationship with superstar Rihanna. From his mom and dad helping him choose baseball in Oklahoma to Torii Hunter and Don Newcombe guiding him once he reached the majors, Kemp gives praise to the many people who helped him reach the success he had. Yet today he is no longer an active baseball player, and he talks about the unknown struggles of retirement and entering a new chapter as a dad. In April 1947, modern day baseball changed forever. That's when Jackie Robinson played his first major league game as a Brooklyn Dodger. After that day, there were a string of African-American firsts in baseball. Four months later, Dan Bankhead of the Dodgers became the first black pitcher to play in a major league game. In 1948, Roy Campanella became the first black catcher. Larry Doby of the Cleveland Indians became the first Black player to hit a home run in a World Series. In 1949, there were three African-Americans playing in the World Series when just 3 years earlier Blacks were still excluded from Major League Baseball. All three were playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and pitcher Don Newcombe. Robinson and Campanella would become Hall of Famers, and Newcombe would win both the Cy Young and National League Most Valuable Player awards during the same season. You'll hear all three playing in Game 4 of the 1949 World Series against the Yankees. Newcombe took the mound with only 2 days rest, from striking out 11 Yankees in Game One, but the Yankees won 1-to-nothing and would go on to take the series. Get details at http://krobcollection.com

Apart from the occasional “one and done” years, the only team to have a winning record over .500 in every year they played is the Milwaukee Braves. There were losing years under the Boston Braves and Atlanta Braves banners, but the thirteen years in Milwaukee stand apart not just in this franchise but in every franchise. From the pennant-winning streak between 53 and 59, through record-breaking appearances, to a World Series win in 1957, this is a storied part of the team's history. Let's pick up one of those stories for today's game. It's May 1957; not only have the Braves rushed out to a 17-7 record, but their divisional rivals, the Dodgers, are struggling to find their footing. Visiting Country Stadium with a 13-10 record, the Dodgers are hoping the legendary Don Newcombe can pitch them into a winning streak. And don't forget who's behind the microphone… an incredibly young Vin Scully. You can find the boxscore here. It's time for another World Series. Our podcast today features a Baseball Hall of Fame catcher who helped the Brooklyn Dodgers win its first World Series championship in 1955. Three-time MVP catcher Roy Campanella was in every all- star game from 1949 through 1956, including the first integrated all-star game with Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, and Larry Doby. During his career, he threw out 57 percent of the base runners who tried to steal a base on him, the best of any catcher in major league history. His playing career came to an end after he was seriously injured in an auto accident.

1951 seemed like the season it would all finally come together in Brooklyn. The Dodgers were led by Catcher Roy Campanella, First baseman Gil Hodges, Outfielder Duke Snider, and now second-baseman, Jackie Robinson. Through one-hundred sixteen games, Brooklyn had seventy wins. On August 11th the New York Giants trailed the Dodgers in the standings by thirteen games. Then, Giants manager Leo Durocher put coach Herman Franks in the Polo Grounds offices in the Giants' clubhouse beyond center field. His objective was to steal opposing catchers' signals. Franks used a telescope to relay signs through an electrical-buzzer system to the Giants' bullpen. From there, the signs would be flashed to the Giants' hitters. The Giants won thirty-seven of forty-four games down the stretch. It forced a tie with the Dodgers in the standings. A three game series was announced to decide the winner of the pennant. At Ebbets field in Game 1, Giants pitcher Jim Hearn out-dueled Dodgers starter Ralph Branca, and the Giants won three to one behind solo home runs from Andy Pafko, Bobby Thomson, and Monty Irvin. The second game, played at The Polo Grounds was a rout, but in favor of Brooklyn. Jackie Robinson had three hits, including a home run, and Dodgers starter Clem Labine went nine. October 3rd, 1951: Game three. The tight, tense affair was played before more than thirty-four thousand fans at the Polo Grounds. Brooklyn struck first when Jackie Robinson had an RBI single in the first inning. The Giants tied it in the seventh when Bobby Thomson hit a Sacrifice Fly. But the Dodgers struck right back, scoring three runs in the eighth. Jackie Robinson was once again in the middle of the action. With Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe dealing, the game seemed all, but over. Then in the bottom of the 9th, The Giants put back-to-back men on. Whitey Lockman doubled to center field to score two runs. It made the score four-to-three. The winning run came up to bat. Ralph Branca came in to relieve Newcombe. Bobby Thompson was the Giants batter. The Giants would face the Yankees in the World Series and the Dodgers would again have to wait until next year.

Stephen Fife never wanted to pitch and was never good enough to pitch regularly as a kid. He was a second baseman on the first team from Idaho to reach the Little League World Series. But an injury in high school led him to the mound, and he ended up pitching 10 years as a professional.  On Episode 16 of the "Life Around the Seams" podcast, we trace some of the fascinating moments from Fife's career. Projected to be about a 10th round pick, one fateful collegiate start against future first overall pick Stephen Strasburg launched him into the third round. Fife was usually "the dad" to his minor league teammates, outdueled Roy Halladay in his major-league debut, and made 18 appearances in the major leagues around 809 innings in the minor leagues. Fife missed one season recovering from Tommy John elbow surgery and slung drinks at a Melting Pot to help pay bills. He tells us the story of talking curveballs with Sandy Koufax, life lessons with Don Newcombe, the injury that cost him a chance at going to Japan, later going to Japan, and when he knew it was time to retire.

Don Newcombe was instrumental in breaking down barriers when the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him in 1946. Instead of sending him to join Jackie Robinson in Montreal, they sent him along with Roy Campanella to play for the Nashua Dodgers where they integrated the Class B New England League. In the wake of Newcombe’s recent passing, I reached out to the 93-year-old Billy DeMars for the latest Baseball Happenings Podcast to discuss the experience of playing with his pioneering teammate.Click here to listen on Spotify.Click here to listen on iTunes.“The one thing I remember about Don was he was a helluva great pitcher,” DeMars said from his Florida home. “We were playing in Manchester New Hampshire one night, and Walter Alston was our manager that year. He brought him in the ninth inning. ... He didn’t hold anything back, he struck out all three batters. Just to watch him throw, he let the air out. He was tremendous!”Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella in Nashua, 1946 DeMars also noted that in addition to being lights out on the mound, Newcombe was a force at the plate. He led the team in with a .311 batting average, even besting his future Hall of Fame teammate Campanella.Branch Rickey sent both of Negro League talents north to New Hampshire, as he could not place them in the hostile cities of his other southern minor league affiliates. DeMars said the Nashua team readily accepted both players and treated them like family.“We had absolutely no problems whatsoever on the team," he said. "They were just other players. We got along absolutely great with Don [Newcombe] and [Roy] Campanella. In fact, Campanella had a little boy who was five or six. We used to put him on an iron crate and let him play on the pinball machine.”The Brooklyn native wound up on the Nashua team after returning from his World War II service, where he played with Ted Williams and Charlie Gehringer at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The trio of future major leaguers, as well as player-manager Walter Alston, helped guide the team to the championship. Some seven decades later, DeMars chuckled at the reward. “Another funny thing about that season, we lost the pennant on the last day of the season,” he said. “We went into the playoffs, and we won that to [become] the champions and our winning share was ten bucks apiece!” Long removed from his playing and coaching days, DeMars marveled at the amount of money, or lack thereof, that he made while in the minor leagues. “I signed and went up to Olean New York in 1943 just before I went in the Navy,” he said. “I tell everybody I made $3.50 a day. It was $100 a month — $25 a week, which came out to $3.50 a day. It is a little bit different than today.”He cited a broken current minor league system that continues to underpay both the players and coaches. He explained that with record-setting major league contracts, baseball needs to reach down into the minor leagues and improve salary conditions.“That’s what’s wrong with the game,” he said. “I just saw [Manny Machado] signed for $300 million and the guys who have to take cuts in salary are the minor league managers and the players. They are not paid as much as they should be [making]. The scouts and minor league managers need to make good money too. They are developing the players, and they have to work hard as hell down there. "I spent 11 years as a minor league manager, and I was married and I had children at the time. You had to write up the whole league twice a year, the players once a month. At that time, I used to drive the team. We used to have cars; me and two other players would drive the club around. It wasn’t easy but we made it.”DeMars played parts of three major league seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics and the St. Louis Browns. After 11 years as a minor league manager, he spent the next 19 as a major league coach with the Philadelphia Phillies, Montreal Expos, and Cincinnati Reds. He has managed to outlive most of his peers, with Newcombe’s death serving as a mortal reminder of his place in history.“In August, I will be 94,” he said. “Now with Newcombe gone, I moved up to 22 [he is currently the 23rd oldest living former major league baseball player]. It’s a helluva a list isn’t it?” Still, the nonagenarian is popular with the fans due to his status as one of the few remaining St. Louis Browns alumni.“I get a hell of a lot of mail,” he said. “I think there are 12 of us left from the St. Louis Browns. St. Louis was great, everything about St. Louis was great.”

2-21-2019 Passed Ball Show- John opens up the program by mourning the loss of long time Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe. Don was a force in the Dodgers World Series Championship season in 1955 and won 27 games a year later. An extremely prolific figure in the civil rights movement, Newcombe had his MLB career interrupted two separate times. Because of this, he should get more consideration for Baseball's Hall of Fame. John also talks about Vinny Vella's impact on his life and his show. Vinny was a solid actor and comedian and had a show only he could host. Really, nobody else could have successfully hosted his show- his personality and style was perfect for his show. Thanks to Vinny for having John as a guest on his show. John then suggests a change to the rules of Nascar which would give racers another chance if their car either malfunctions or is involved in an accident during a race. Finally, John talks about the difference between being the greatest and being the best, making some points about how it is difficult to quantify how good a player of 100 years ago or 75 years ago is compared to a player over the last 45-50 years. John then lists his top ten MLB position players of all time.

This week on the podcast Machado is a Padre, Puig made some questionable statements to Cincinnati media, and baseball could be heading toward a work stoppage. But first we remember Don Newcombe, a Dodger legend we lost ahead of episode 42 of the podcast. Spring training is a week old, and Manny Machado "hustled" to the contract finish line before Bryce Harper. Brook and Clint discuss the agreed upon 10-year, $300M deal with the Padres, and how Corey Seager looking healthy makes it ok to let him go. Next, we welcome DN Editorial lead Tim Rogers on to the show to discuss some misconceptions with free agency, and how MLB owners really have no reason to want to fix a broken system that is headed toward a work stoppage in 2022. In the second half of the show, our live audience wants to know what's going on with Andrew Toles after he didn't report to camp. Yasiel Puig made us question his comment to the Dodgers in his last few seasons after he made some questionable comments regarding his contract status. Clint suggests that the Dodgers protected Puig more than we all realized, and that everyone conveniently swept a lot under the rug when it came to his time in blue. Clayton Kershaw was named to make his ninth straight opening day start for the Dodgers, but Brook wonders if that is the right call. Plus Clint understands the latest changes that Cody Bellinger is trying with his swing. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
