Luis Severino to Sacramento is a big deal for the franchise formerly known as the #athletics who seem like they will eventually move to Vegas. Frankie Montas to the Mets was the reason Severino headed west. But still no word on Juan Soto but we think it will happen this week. Classic Era baseball committee came up with Dick Allen and Dave Parker but we thought Luis Tiant might make it and that all 8 candidates were worthy - well at least 7 of them. How about the Golden at-bat? Is this #MLB fan trolling? Commissioner Rob Manfred knew he'd be raked over the coals. But did it anyway. Why? It's a terrible idea and in no way makes #baseball better. HOFer Mickey Mantle is the greatest switch hitter of all time. End of story. HOFer Eddie Murray was the other switch hitter that has 500 career (504) home runs. With Winter Meetings just around the corner, and the Hot Stove heating up, it's time to talk about the Baseball Hall of Fame, specifically the eight players on the Classic Era Ballot. This year, six former major league all-stars and two Negro League legends are up for enshrinement. Each of the position player candidates has won an MVP, and the two major league pitchers combined for over 500 career wins at the big league level, not to mention stellar postseason performances. These are players who remained on the writers ballot for many years, if not the full fifteen in some cases, and they've been under consideration in prior ‘Veteran's Committee' selections. They are all worthy candidates, but the committee members can only vote for three players. As is often the case on these committees, only one or two of these great players may get inducted this year, and the others will have to wait years to get another shot. Here are this year's selections for the Classic Era Ballot: Dick Allen - 1B/3B for PHI & CHW, 1972 AL MVP, 1964 NL ROY, 7X AS Ken Boyer - 3B for STL, 1964 NL MVP & WS, 11X AS, 5X GG John Donaldson - LHP/1B in '10's & '20's, 400+ W & 5,000 K Steve Garvey - 1B for LAD & SDP, 1974 NL MVP, 10X AS, 4X GG Vic Harris - Player-Manger for the Homestead Grays, greatest Negro League team Tommy John - LHP for CHW, LAD, NYY, 288 W, 4710 IP, redefined injury recovery Dave Parker - RF for PIT, CIN, 1978 NL MVP, 7X AS, 3X GG Luis Tiant - RHP for CLE, BOS, 229 W, most by any Cuban born player Results of the committee will be announced on Dec 8th. In my opinion, all of these candidates are deserving, and I would have no complaints about any of them being selected. I personally would vote for Dick Allen (who missed by just one vote last time), Luis Tiant (who we sadly lost this year), and Ken Boyer (who was brilliant at an underrepresented position). Who would you pick, and who do you expect to make it in? As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, box scores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O.

Jim is joined by former producer for ESPN's Baseball Tonight and the creator of the website "Cooperstown Cred", Chris Bodig, to break down down the hall of fame candidacy of former MLB starting pitcher Luis Tiant. First, Chris and Jim cover Tiant's famous windup and where it ranks among the greatest windups we have seen on a pitching mound (6:55). Next, they discuss Tiant's legendary performance in the 1975 World Series, his largely forgotten dominant 1968 season with the Cleveland Indians, and why Tiant reminds us both of a lot of Juan Marichal (12:02). Finally, Jim and Chris rank Tiant among the best pitchers of the 1960s/1970s (33:05), before both stating whether or not they believe he deserves a plaque in Cooperstown (43:22).

Famed Cuban pitcher Luis Tiant is up for consideration on this year's Classic Baseball Era Committee ballot. The son of famed Cuban pitcher Luis Tiant Sr., Luis pitched 19 seasons in MLB and is one of only 11 pitchers in MLB history to retire with 225+ wins, 2400+ strikeouts, 49+ shutouts and a career ERA under 3.30. The other 10 are all in the HOF. Tiant's 49 career shutouts tie him with HOFers Don Drysdale, Fergie Jenkins, and Early Wynn for 21st best in MLB history. Every pitcher with more career shutouts than Tiant is in the HOF. A legendary character and beloved teammate, Tiant was a hero in the 1975 post-season for the Boston Red Sox. Are his career numbers, hardware, and fame factor good enough to merit induction into Cooperstown?

This week the world learned the sad news that MLB pitcher Luis Tiant died at the age of 83. Once called, the “Fred Astaire of baseball,” the Cuban born player was charismatic, enthusiastic, and vibrant. Tiant won 122 games for the Red Sox over eight seasons. He was a Fenway Park favorite for his “infectious spirit.” We honor and remember the legendary Luis Tiant.

What a difference a few days can make as I'm riding high and excited as I can be, here to deliver an hour plus of my analysis on what the sports world has to offer as the latest podcast has arrived! On deck: (6:41) It's a wild ride that I don't want to get off from. The New York Mets have advanced to the NLCS for the first time since 2015 as they dispose of the Philadelphia Phillies in four games. Is this really happening? Who are these guys? I'll go over the past two resounding victories, have a request for the baseball gods and could this ride take us fans to a World Series? I'll check in on the other series as the Dodgers showed some toughness to push the Padres to a deciding fifth game. The Yankees get back on the beam after a rough Game 2 loss to put the Royals on the brink. Can Gerrit Cole put the hammer down in a close out game? Then the Guardians have to stay alive in Detroit as the Tigers are flying high to see if they can get back to an ALCS for the first time since 2013. I'll also share my thoughts on the passing of former Red Sox pitcher, Luis Tiant, who died at the age of 83. (41:26) Five plus weeks into the NFL season, we've got our first head coach fired as Robert Sale was given his walking papers by the New York Jets. Was this too soon? Is his replacement (defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich) the answer? It's a rather light Week 6 schedule as the two highlight games are Washington at Baltimore, Detroit at Dallas and a big Monday night between the Bills and Jets. (52:35) College football has a GINORMOUS game on Saturday night as #2 Ohio State will visit #3 Oregon. What does this mean for the college football playoff picture? There are two other biggies forthcoming (#1 Texas at #18 Oklahoma, #9 Ole Miss vs. #13 LSU which we'll keep an eye on. (56:16) The NHL is back on the sports map. It's only been a couple of days, but I'll discuss the Panthers opening night win and banner celebration. The Utah Hockey Club wins their first ever game and now come to the New York area over the next five days, while the Rangers may be on a mission with a statement shutout over the aging Penguins in Pittsburgh. (1:00:49) Rafael Nadal will go off into the sunset as he'll retire at the end of the tennis season. I'll recap his spirit, championship play and does he belong on the sport's Mt. Rushmore? Welcome back to TableSetters, your go-to podcast for all things baseball! Steve and Devin are back, diving deep into the week's news, with the Divisional Series in progress. The Phillies saw their season end to the relentless New York Mets in 4 games. The Tigers continue to roll and have pushed the Guardians to the brink of elimination. We discuss the improbable home run that Kerry Carpenter hit off of Clase in Game 2. The Yankees took a 2-1 series lead and now look to have Gerrit Cole clinch the series on Thursday to punch their ticket to the ALCS. We also have the drama brewing on the West Coast with the Dodgers and Padres. The fans have become a big part of this series and not in a good way. What did we think of Dave Roberts' claim that Manny Machado intentionally threw a ball at him? Buckle up as we discuss the life and times of Luis Tiant and his impact on the game of baseball and his influence on other Cuban playing baseball. The Red Sox are sure to honor him in 2025. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, folks. We have some updates on the Diamond Sports Group and MLB has taken the mantle of broadcasting the Brewers, Guardians and the Twins for the 2025 season which will forego blackouts in that market. We talk about the Twitter polls and the question of if we think we should boil the awards to one instead of two being league centric. We get into so much more, so dive in and give us your feedback!
