Kansas City Royals legend Alex Gordon joins Eric Hosmer & Mike Moustakas in the 1st edition of Diggin' At Home!Gordo takes us back to his baseball roots in Nebraska, playing for the Cornhuskers, and becoming the 2nd overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft. He shares what it was like coming up as a young player in the Royals organization and overcoming hard times early in his career. Gordo also takes us behind scenes of the conversations he had with Dayton Moore early on about transitioning from 3rd base to the outfield, a move that would lead to him winning 8x Gold Gloves, and at the time made room for a young Moose to fill that spot. The guys discuss the current state of the Royals and why the future is so bright with a guy like Bobby Witt Jr. in the clubhouse. As an assistant coach, Gordo breaks down what he saw from this past season and why he's excited about what's to come in KC. Of course the guys had to take a trip down memory and talk about the glory days in Kansas City. Gordo delivers a break down of his Game 7 hit that he almost made it home on - should he have been sent home? He also gives us a comprehensive break down of his iconic home run against Jeurys Familia. Gordo shares how studying Familia's quick pitch to Salvador Perez changed his approach at the plate, leading to the game-tying home run that sent Kauffman Stadium into a frenzy. From his MLB debut against Curt Schilling to meeting George Brett as a rookie, Gordo provides an amazing look at his remarkable MLB journey.-----------------GuestAlex Gordon / @alex.gordon.4HostsEric Hosmer / @hosmer305Mike Moustakas / @moosetacos8Interact with the Diggin' Deep Crew on:Instagram / Facebook / Twitter / TikTokAdvertising & Partnership inquiries: diggindeep@moonballmedia.coma MoonBall Media Podcast
Hey, it's Jesse. I usually don't first-person these, since it's Roger and Andrew's podcast and I just like to do some notes in the space here… but also, today's note is especially for the 8-year-old in my house, whose reaction to the Mets winning last night on DJ Stewart getting hit by a pitch was, “has that ever happened before?”“A walkoff hit by pitch?” I replied. “Yeah, it happens sometimes.”“That exact situation?”“It's got to be the bases loaded, so, yes?”“The Mets against the Rangers?”“Well, I doubt that. They haven't played each other too much.”Indeed, the Mets' previous three wins on a walkoff HBP came against the Marlins in the 2021 home opener (Michael Conforto by Anthony Bass), the A's in 2011 (Justin Turner by Brad Ziegler), and the Cardinals on April 23, 1992 (Daryl Boston by Juan Agosto).Wait just a minute. Daryl Boston hit by Juan Agosto? That was part of Monday's note, because the runner who scored was Rodney McCray, a pinch-runner.Conforto is the only batter of the four who was hit in the ninth inning, so McNeil is the first Manfred Man to score a game-winning run on an HBP in Mets history (the others were both in 13th innings, pre-baseball shootout rule). McNeil hit the home run that tied the game against the Marlins two years ago, and pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled and eventually scored when Conforto leaned over the plate for the win. Lucas Duda singled and came around on the Turner plunking, so the Mets have had all manner of baserunners bring home wins this way.All four of these Mets rallies do share in common an intentional walk, and the one that Joe Torre and the Cardinals gave to Charlie O'Brien did show that little bit of strategy that came into play before the automatic free pass: Juan Agosto throwing pitchouts to Tom Pagnozzi, rather than Pagnozzi doing the old stand-and-shuffle move. Tim McCarver went so far as to describe it as an “unintentional intentional walk,” but the official scorer gave it a full IBB. After all, there wasn't an attempt to throw a strike on ball four, it was purposely outside. The Mets are now 4-4 in games with a walkoff HBP, and haven't lost a game this way since 2014, when Jeurys Familia drilled Hank Conger with the bases loaded in the 11th inning in Anaheim — one of three walkoff HBPs in the majors that year, a record set in 1972, and tied in 1997, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2021. It's the first time it happened this year, and it's now happened at least once each of the last five seasons since a failure to get this shrimp varietal in 2018.Jonny Gomes is the only batter to be hit by two pitches to end games: August 21, 2011 in Washington, by Phillies closer Brad Lidge; and April 11, 2012, in Oakland, by Jonathan Broxton of Kansas City. Only one pitcher has walked off twice after hitting a batter: Randy Moffitt with the Giants in 1972 (Joe Pepitone at Wrigley Field) and 1978 (Bill Russell at Dodger Stadium). Episode 99! In this one we break down the Red Sox 3-3 homestand and the team's series opening win against the Pirates. We also discuss who our dream broadcast booth would be with Eck retiring, bring back the laughing at the Yankees segment, Klosen's confidence that the Red Sox will still sneak into a wild card spot, the team finally getting healthy, our happy camper candy power ranking, Jeurys Familia signing with the Sox, Chris Sale's bike accident, Tatis's steroid suspension, our friend Brian catching IKF's first Yankee's HR ball, and a whole lot more, Enjoy!
Red Sox Review Hour 1- With tonight's 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Red Sox have now won 4 of their last 5 games. After a strong series against the Yankees, and the pitching seemingly getting something going, can this Red Sox team actually make a run? Cora wants to see Jeurys Familia, Brian Barrett does not. Should the Red Sox even bother pitching Austin Davis in late situations? Jaren Durran just doesn't look like a major league player. Is the Red Sox pitching staff getting something going?
Tatis, Jr. has disappointed his teammates, his coaches, and perhaps most terrifying, Abba-singing moms. We discuss the suspension, maturity levels, and the need to make better choices. Skye Bolt needs to make better choices for breakfast, but “leaves it all on the field” for the As. Jeurys Familia leads us to discuss if players can earn their way off the never gonna be a boyfriend list. Solomon Bates comes out and gets an indy ball gig. Advocates for Minor Leaguers checks Manfred's math and it does not turn out well for the Commissioner. Paul Goldschmidt, J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper join Team USA for the World Baseball Classic, and you can watch women's world cup qualifiers right now. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom Giordano welcomes back in legendary actor William Shatner to discuss the upcoming Philadelphia FanExpo from April 8-10th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. First, Shatner and Giordano discuss the famed actor's ties to Philadelphia, reflecting upon the multiple times he spent on the Mike Douglas Show. Then, Shatner is shocked when Dom reveals that Pete Davidson will be the next celebrity in line to go to space, with Dom asking him for what he learned when he went up to space with Blue Origin. In addition, Shatner tells about the culmination of his spoken word albums, and tells the role that he's most proud of. Then, Giordano switches to some sports stories, discussing the Phillies decision to sign Jeurys Familia and Odubel Herrera, two players with pasts checkered with domestic violence allegations. Giordano takes umbrage with the Phillies decision, explaining why we should not be signing people with pasts like these, and ties it into a discussion about whether the Eagles should pursue Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Then, Giordano provides an update on the performance of transgendered swimmer Lia Thomas, who will compete in the NCAA championship soon. After that, Giordano offers his predictions for the Pennsylvania Senate Primary, propping up the negatives of both Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dave McCormick against one another. Giordano then gives an update on the other side of things, telling that John Fetterman seems to be the clear frontrunner for the Democratic Party in the race to fill Pat Toomey's seat. The New York Mets had their five-game winning streak snapped last night, as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied late to walk it off in extras. Considering how great the bullpen has been this year, should we just give the Mets relievers a pass for coughing up the late lead?Jeurys Familia and Trevor May have had differing seasons when it comes to meeting preseason expectations. Is Familia's resurgence sustainable, and should you be concerned with May's recent skid?We also take a look at Dominic Smith's season so far and whether he can get back to being the hitter he was in 2020.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Despite leaving 62 runners on base over their seven-game road trip between Philadelphia and St. Louis, the Mets finished the stretch 4-3, sending them back to Queens at .500 and within arm's reach of first place in the National League East. Sure, their ineffectiveness may have cost Chili Davis and Tom Slater their jobs, but that's baseball, baby. Taijuan Walker's looked dominant (as has the rest of the Mets' rotation) the bullpen (most notably Trevor May and Jeurys Familia) has been a godsend, and the offense slowly but surely is beginning to click. Jeurys Familia really struggled in 2019 and set out to change that over the offseason by losing weight and refining his mechanics. All his work paid off, as he turned in a much better campaign in 2020, although still not to the level we expect from the former All-Star.What are some the reasons behind his performance and can he make some corrections that have him perform at that All-Star level again in 2021?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The New York Mets bullpen was disastrous in 2019 and was a big reason for why the team did not ultimately make the playoffs. A huge key for success for the Mets this year is for the bullpen to have a much better season, which is dependent on bounce-back years from some of their top relievers. Will Edwin Diaz and Jeurys Familia be better this year and how will the additions of Dellin Betances and Jarred Hughes impact the Mets in 2020?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
