Welcome to episode 88 of the Final Surge Podcast where today we welcome Olympian runner Ruben Sanca. Ruben ran for Cabo Verde in the 2011 World Championships in the marathon and the 2012 Olympics in the 5k. Ruben won 2017 New England Grand Prix Road Racing title and was elected U.S.A. Track & Field New England Male Runner of the Year. We talk to Ruben about how he came to American at age 12, his running career and about his newer company, The Lowell Running Company. Ruben can you start out telling us a little bit about yourself and how you got started running? Born in Cabo Verde Came to the US at 12 and in middle school teacher asked who wanted to sign up for cross country Ran in HS and recruited to run at U Mass Lowell So you came to the US at the age of 12. I don’t know a lot about Cabo Verde besides it’s off the coast of West Africa. Did you speak English? Tell us what it was like for a 12-year-old to come here? Dual citizenship From tiny island  We came here for health reasons and education Was hard to get here, took all our money Came here on Green Card Visa Was running big there or something you didn't discover until you got here? Soccer is big there not running I played soccer when I was here too I was a very good soccer player and had to make a decision in 11th grade as soccer and XC were in the same season If quit soccer to run, I had to make sure I took it very seriously You ran at U Mass Lowell then you went on to compete at the World Championship in 2011 in the marathon and the London Olympic Games in the 5k in 2012. What was it like competing in the Olympics? I was able to represent Cabo Verde My college coach trained me for it and came with me What is your running goals now? Training for 2020 Olympics in the Marathon  Run many local road races but big focus is on the marathon You are working full time, you train 100 miles a week and you manage the Lowell Running Company. How do you fit it all in? I get up early I use technology to save time So one of the ways I first started noticing what you were doing was from the activity online with the Lowell Running Company. Can you tell us what the LRC is and how that started? Started 2016 as I was coaching a few local people Partner with Bay State Marathon to help people run BQ times The goal of LRC was to be a full-service coaching firm Training plans or custom training plans to fit around their schedule Do you do group runs or is it all virtual? We run clinics every 4-5 weeks to answer questions We have group runs for long runs once a week Is your coaching all in person or do you virtual coaching too? We do both  We do training for other races too We track the goals of each runner and their results Do you work with mostly marathoners or do you work with others? Work with 5k-marathon Specialize in half and full marathon Runners are a mix of I want to finish and those who are more experienced How are you using Final Surge in your coaching? This week's adventure was flying to Portland to run the marathon.  It was weird and wonderful and I did well – but you can hear all about it in the race report in this episode.  I also sit down with Coach and we talk about some marathon strategies on the futon in his running store in Woodstock Oregon – Pace Setter Athletics. That's probably enough for one episode.  Thank you all for showing up every other week and listening to my stories.  I appreciate it.  I truly live a charmed life.  I ran into a couple folks this week who were podcast listeners and it's super weird for them to hear my voice and see it coming out of me.  I'm sure it's terribly disturbing and potentially disappointing but I love getting out and having adventures and meeting people.  I'm like Kwai Chang from Kung Fu.  Wandering the earth, speaking cryptic philosophy and kicking ass.  “When you can snatch the pebble from my hand…grasshopper”  (Google it kids.) I'll keep my comments brief because I'm juggling travel and work this week. Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … I spent the week in Woodstock Oregon.  You have to remember I'm from Boston.  .  I grew up in the 70's Irish Catholic.  The Portland area is in some ways way outside my comfort zone but in other ways strangely familiar.  It's like being dropped into a friendly pot growing commune in 1972.  Everybody is super politically correct and friendly but at the same time super alternative life style.  This is a place where you have to be careful not to walk too close to the road when walking down the sidewalk because cars will crash themselves stopping to let you cross.  In Boston driving is a contact sport and pedestrians are the prize.  In Portland it's like some sort of baroque dance routine. There is a coffee shop on every corner.  But not a Starbucks.  The villagers picket Starbucks and drive them out of town as the evil corrupting corporation.  Every store sells craft beer.  The hardware store sells craft beer. The tanning salon sells craft beer.  If they're not selling craft beer they are selling pot.  Everyone wears a ski hat.  Everyone has purple hair, and piercings and tattoos and man-buns and Mohawks.  But they are all super nice and homey.  Every restaurant is a vegan restaurant.  There are homeless people everywhere, but it's hard to tell the homeless from the hipsters.  There's an actual game in Portland called ‘Homeless or hipster?' where you try to guess.  Everything is made by orphaned panda cubs using baby koala tears.  It rains almost every day.  As I sit here writing this, on the roof of a natural foods market – that sells craft beer and vegan appetizers – they have Kombucha on tap - there is a woman(?) with a goatee who has been discussing the nuances of an upcoming wiccan ceremony for 40 minutes like she's talking about what kind of brownies to bring to the PTA meeting.  I love it here.  You can be as weird as you want and everyone is friendly.  And that's what I love about America.  And that's why I go on adventures. Life is all about making choices.  Choices between what’s right and wrong, choices between what’s good and evil, choices between altruism and egotism, of giving and taking, of sharing and selfishness and choices between what’s smart and what’s dumb. I chose to run the 2008 Bay State Marathon just as 25 years ago this month I chose to take part in a project to help etch my college radio station’s name in the history of a Northern Massachusetts city. Sometimes we do things without thinking it through, or considering the consequences.  Sometimes we do things on impulse or instinct and throw caution to the wind for ideals and purposes which seem like a good idea at the time. With three solid hours of sleep, the depressing notion that my beloved Boston Red Sox had lost a crucial game in extra innings, and the understanding that I was about to run my 16th marathon, fellow runner John Ellis and I crossed the chip mat at the starting line of the Bay State Marathon in Lowell Massachusetts, and I ran the best marathon of my life. What happened next was not magic. It wasn’t some kind of impossible stroke of luck, and it wasn’t completely unexpected: to be a runner is to accept the same kind of challenge that a profession ball team accepts when they compete in the World Series. It’s all about overcoming barriers to success and celebrating those successes when the challenge is overcome.
